Severe graphical issues - Remix OS for PC

Hi, I've tried running Remix OS off a USB stick on a pretty rubbish old emachines laptop with an AMD Athlon 2650e and a Mobility Radeon X1200. I get constant flickering and black triangles all over the screen. I get no issues if I boot with nomodeset but it is extremely low res and laggy. Any ideas on how to fix this? Cheers.

Yeah...no. Jide considers PCs as having Intel only hardware: Intel CPU and Intel graphics.
NVidia and AMD are not Intel so they are not PCs - so no support.
Really it should be called "Remix OS for old Intel laptops" instead of "Remix OS for PC".

Unfortunately, you're going to have to use nomodeset for the time being until more drivers are added to Remix OS.

But let's be complete in this answer. Using nomodeset when not having an integrated graphics card means CPU overheat as every simple and singular animation on the screen will be rendered by the CPU. Even if you have the best Intel Core i7 with Hyperthreading technology and latest overclocking ASUS or MSI gaming motherboards - it will be of no use. Your system will crawl while running Remix OS and the CPU will overheat.
Do not take lightly the overheat issue. I almost fried my CPU because I left it update all my Android apps with the Google Play Store on the screen. Remember all those download animations in the Google Play Store app while updating? Yeah...my CPU was screaming at 70-80 degrees for about 10 minutes. 10 minutes while updating 5 apps - because WiFi is also a ***** in Remix OS. Enjoy...

With a crappy Athlon processor using nomodeset seemed like everything was running at less than a frame per second. The thing gets hot enough as it is. I've tried Chromium, Remix and Android x86 and every one has the same graphics issue. Guess I'll have to go back to something like Linux lite. Even that manages to lag.

As I said before, go buy a Chromebook. It's cheap as a very old second-hand laptop and it works great. You will soon get Android Play Store so you'll be able to run all your favorite Android apps. Plus you will get guaranteed quality and an officially supported Google device. Throw away your old PC - you don't need it anymore. There's nothing to justify keeping it around. With Remix OS you'll always run into hardware issues. Get a new, cheap, properly supported device. 200 EUR for a new, good looking, fully supported and that will soon have all Android Play Store - what are you waiting for?
EDIT: sorry if that sounded like a bad and cheap commercial. It's just that I don't understand the need for a hacked, lacking, limited Remix OS when we have the official Google supported solution: Chromebooks.

CPU usage with Remix OS

I have tried Remix OS 32bit and 64bit versions on my Dell XPS 12 laptop with intel core i7 processor and 8 GB of memory
I have noticed that the cpu fan kept working all the time and so much heat is coming out of the laptop.
I used a CPU monitoring software from play store and it showed that the system UI process is constantly consuming 25% of the processor all the time, I tested the 32bit on a very old netbook and the same fan noise and processor state at 25% all the time.
Any suggestions please ?

Only thing I know of and have done is disable turbo on my surface pro 2.....
Have added "echo 1 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/no_turbo" line to system/etc/init.sh
If i load up Cpu-z app tho from app store mine sitting at 0-2% cpu on desktop idle

thank you for your reply. I have tried that and nothing changed. the system ui process is taking 25% of the processor power all the time
Hi, I am not sure if something to do with your hardware but I have remix os and x86 standard lollipop installed on my surface pro 2 and that sits at idle fine

Thanks again for your feedback. It is fixed now after updating the OS. Remix OS still in Beta state so many bugs are expected
Mine's the opposite, was fine with march release but runs quite hot now lol.

Under Clocking PC to Reduce Heat

I am currently running Remix OS for PC Hacked Edition 2.0.205 on a Toshiba Satellite Radius 12 (P25W-2300C-4k) 2 in 1 notebook. When booted into Remix the fans are generally running all the time. I though reducing the CPU would help with the heat and therefor reduce the fan use. I did something similar in Windows 10 and Ubuntu 16.04 and it works perfect. The notebook has a Core I7 Dual core 6th gen CPU so I should be able to reduce my clock by half without any problem. When I downloaded an oveerclocking app from the play store my only options were 400Mhz and 3.0GHz, there were no speeds in between. I tried another app and found the same thing. Has anyone else tried to under or over clock their CPU in Remix and found the same issue, only seeing two possible clock speeds?
Thanks
After testing out a bunch of the overclock apps in the play store I found one that seems to work. For anyone interested it is called 3C CPU Manager. I am only able to underclock my CPU because the kernel of Remix OS doesn't seem to support overclocking.
This is a fairly major issue with RemixOS and the myriad of hardware running it currently. With such a small team working on it, I imagine it's impossible to enumerate all the hardware configurations out there, especially legacy. Personally, I just fried another chip on RemixOS, a Nvidia quadro fx 3600m, out of a dell precision m6300 (rather upsetting), tinkering around and running the hacked edition as well. These cards were suspect due to solder issues anyway, but I believe it had a lot more life left in it. I never noticed until it was to late in my case, the fan's on my system weren't enumerated/activated whatsoever, until a hard shutdown-reboot, and the fabled blue lines of death it has now. I'd be especially careful with watching your cpu/gpu temps, and doubly cautious on which programs/games you decide to run through remixOS, as I have no doubt with the plethora of apps available, there are many floating around that can run your card in way's it was never intended.
Thanks for the info, I am only interested in underclocking my notebook rather than overclocking it. It just happens that the apps used are typically called overclocking apps. With how hot Remix runs on my notebook I wouldn't even consider overclocking. Remix currently runs at 1 GHz max (CPU capable of 3.1GHz) using the app I listed above and my fans come on far less than they were before. I am fairly certain underclocking worked for a few reasons, my computer doesn't run as hot, the fans are not running 24/7 and validated the clock speed using ZCPU and cpuinfo in /proc. In addition to the extra power draw from the fans, I was also worried about the fans failing from running so much. Replacing a fan in a desktop is one thing, replacing a fan in a compact notebook like mine is well, not so easy. Sorry to hear about your card, I would be quite upset if my notebook/graphics chip fried. Hope yu don't mind i'm going to use your info to update my article. Will give credit due
I saw my notebook CPU running most of the time >80 C in Remix OS. It never happens in Windows or Linux. Isn't that it is related to the underlying structure of Android on x86?

Fan keeps spinning at abnormal speeds.

Hi! I've installed RemixOS in my Asus Zenbook UX501VW and after dealing with NVIDIA incompatibilities and DPI scaling issues, I've finally booted it. While everything seems to work quite great, there's a strange problem that makes me turn off the laptop after a few minutes of usage: The fans start spinning at full speed (they don't do that noise even rendering 4K games in Windows). The laptop doesn't get warm or even make weird things, it just works fine! I can't live with that spinning because it's way too loud, more than the actual built-in, although crappy, B&O speakers. I don't do anything wrong for this, It just starts making noise right after finishing the boot process. The noise is pretty similar to the fan noise while upgrading a BIOS in almost any fan-powered laptop, which leads me to think that something between the BIOS and RemixOS is not communicating properly.
Laptop Specs:
CPU: Intel Core i7 (6th Gen) 6700HQ / 2.6 GHz
RAM: 16GB
DISPLAY: 4K IPS LG Screen
DRIVE: 512GB Samsung SSD
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M - 2 GB GDDR5 SDRAM
Model: ASUS ZENBOOK PRO UX501VW-DS71T
Thanks in advance!
The reason is mostly related to no use of GPU and your CPU is taking care of graphics rendering.
You are probably using the option:
androidboot.swrast=1
to boot.
Try EXTMOD=i915 in the grub.cfg instead of androidboot.swrast=1

Got you! If it boot with androidboot.swrast=1 however the fan spinning is due to CPU overloaded in managing the video.
You can search this thread for confirmation.
The option I suggested works if you have Intel internal GPU beside the NVIDIA.
Probably we need to wait next release. Remix team seems working to fix it.

Well yes, I have Intel integrated graphics (I think it's the Intel HD 530 IIRC) but it seems that the laptop forces the Nvidia chip to run first. Even forcing the Integrated graphics to run it will not boot, The only way to get it booting is by disabling both and let the CPU do all the work. Some laptops have an option to set the priority video mode, but mine doesn't seems to have such option. So yes, the best thing to do is wait until Remix OS team manages to fix this.. thanks!

Max cpu fan speed and can't turn off (stuck at shutdown screen)

i just installed remix os 3.0.207 64 bit version and my laptop cpu fan is spinning at maximum speed and it is so noisy. its spin normal when i boot on windows 10, it's spinning on max speed on remix os only.
i also cant turn off the remix os, keep stuck at shutdown screen and i must force shutdown by holding the power button. please help.
my hardware :
asus rog gl552vx
core i7 6700hq
16GB ram
Nvidia GTX 950m GDDR5 4GB
i recommend to not use remix on some hardware
it does not have all the fail safe on some hardware
and it can result in thermal damage.
it could be remix does not have the driver for your computer thermal sensor
and this can explain the fan speed...

those apps are made mostly for arm.
and in the case of x86 this can result in thermal damage in your device.
i can just say we decline all responsibility in case of damage...

All those apps are doing is controlling the kernel via the files in /sys [and /proc] arm/x86 has very little to do with it. The [/proc and] /sys systems are I believe pretty similar between x86 linux and arm linux.
Alternatively you can locate where the max clock rate is listed/read from and alter it yourself, but this won't persist a reboot.
As an example in my case:
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/cpuinfo_cur_freq shows the clockspeed
running echo 1 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/no_turbo disables my cpu's turbo maxing the clockspeed at 800000Hz

the differences is:
android is mostly set up with passive cooled arm device.
x86 need active cooling.
if you reduce the cooling of your device to much
overheat will happens.
simple and logic.
android can sometime not include all the fail safe x86 use,
this is why some devices have been damaged by remix.

I see what you mean.
Though the issue seems to be the cpu running at max [likely due to temp. sense data not being read/delivered as you said]; but OP has stated the fans are running - if they weren't it would be a greater issue [and I don't recall suggesting to turn them off].
So I'd still say it's worth capping the CPU which should help with the fan noise due to the generated heat. If just changing the governor doesn't seem to be doing much. [performance gov. for example will keep cpu as high as possible]
I'm running a passively cooled core M so no fan but without disabling turbo the cpu stays at ~max [2.0GHz] and is noticeably warm.

i've tried to cap the core speed with kernel auditor but the fan keep spinning at maximum speed. i didn't feel any heat from my device. kernel auditor can read the cpu temp, it ranging from 40-45C. i think remix doesn't has the driver to control the fan speed for my device. maybe sixth generation processor with ddr4 ram are not supported yet.

yes as i said the thermal sensor is not seen by remix.
so it default by 100% fan speed.
you will need something to control directly the fan speed.
but you will have to take care you will have no fail safe if your computer is starting to overheat.
you should try android x86 to see if you have same issues with it.
some computer are just not meant to be used on android.

As @tailslol said be careful if the heat becomes an issue. But after a spot of google-ing there is a linux bug where fans stick at 100% and 'resetting' them seems to fix it.
Code:
for i in /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device* ; do
type=`cat $i/type`
if [ "$type" = "Fan" ] ; then
echo 0 > $i/cur_state
fi
running the above flicks the fans off, they should power back up as needed after that. Test running that via termux # but make sure it doesn't create a thermal issue

Choppy 1080p playback on Asus Chromebox CN60 (Celeron 2955U + 8GB Ram)

After a number of failing Android TV boxes, I began searching for something better. I had set up an openelec box for my buddy on a CN60, and figured I'd do something similar as the hardware seemed more than performant.
My needs: Plex, Kodi, Netflix. Much of my local content is 1080p.
After successfully installing Remix OS (3.0.7) on my upgraded chromebox (celeron 2955u w/ 8gb ram) everything seemed to perform fairly snappy. Apps load quick. The OS itself loads quick. The trouble began when I started setting up plex and kodi.
SD is fine. 720p is a bit choppy but fairly smooth but 1080p files basically don't play at all. They begin to play and are choppy as heck. Audio is ok, but the video frame rate is maybe 1 frame per 30 seconds, and sometimes just stops all together.
I assume this is a limitation of the code. Has anyone worked out a solution? Does remix perform like this on higher end hardware? I have some i5's kicking about, I just wanted to use this on a machine with a smaller power and size footprint.

I've got a CN60 Celeron CPU and from what I've read the only sure way to get 1080P on these devices is with a core i3 or i5 option not the Celeron. As history proves, the Celeron is a pathetic CPU except for web surfing and document creation with occasional SD video watching.

As I stated above, the Celeron proves more than capable of playing 1080p files (streams or local) on a number of other OS'. (Currently running Gallium w/ Kodi 17 beta, its fairly snappy.) I suppose its a limitation of the Android-x86 instruction set being more geared towards newer CPU's. It should be noted that Remix OS for PC is advertised as being built to 'bring old hardware back to life', so I figured I'd pose the question to see if there was a solution other than 'get a new computer.'
