Can I play Pokemon go without wifi? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I wanted to play pokemon go but hesitant to download it. I wanted to know if I can play it even if without wifi.

You need a data connection of some sort so no.

It only uses data for GPS I believe, not sure if there is anything else it sends/receives from the network.

Yes I am having the same problem, i still have the old Unlimited Plan, so i dont have hotspots! and it doesnt let me connect either.. Im going to try the Hotspot app on the market and see if it connects doing that, if not i hope some one has the answer.

It did require a mobile hotspot enabled data plan (5GB or Mobile Share) to use. What a shame. I did not know this before. Now this media link hd became useless for me.

There's no way there has to be an option for wifi only I don't know why its forcing a mobile data connection. I guess once it gets in more peoples hands we'll figure it out.
Theres a discussion about it at android central

I did not wanted to flash yet, but it seems i might have to do it if i want to use the Media Link now :crying::highfive:
Interesting... I had the same notification (contact at&t for hotspot functionality) when I used the htc transfer tool to transfer info from my old phone to this one.
Despite the warning, a wifi hotspot was still established and I had no issue transferring my info.
I wonder why this isn't the same result for the media link.

Were you using an Intl ROM? The stock AT&T one got rid of HTC's transfer tool.

Why woukd you need to?
What is that going to do?
Other than having mobile data on at the same time (which you can do), all it really does is provide a fall back signal in case your wifi is weak.

The reason I ask is because, the galaxy s5 uses mobile data and wifi to download a 1GB file and I want to see if it works

Have any of you tried modding the IMS and XDM to get around throttleing?

No. They can exempt Spotify and others because they do packet inspection on the packets coming from your phone and see they're headed for Spotify servers, then they exempt them from being counted. (I saw your other thread) It would be EXTREMELY stupid for T-Mobile to rely on any data from the handset to make a determination on whether to throttle a packet or not (at least like what you're suggesting), otherwise yes, people would get around it.

OC5 Hotspot probs

So, I'm running OC5 OTA update, rooted of course, and have Hotspot working with the APN dun addition (not Galaxy Tools). Is there any way to keep Hotspot from turning itself off when I get a call while on a 3G network? Id like to keep it running until I choose to turn it off, regardless of the state of mobile data. See attached screenshot.
Thanks in advance!
EDIT:
Looks like it's not letting me attach my screenshot. See it here: https://www.dropbox.com/sc/73ot1zhyjhtnvrs/AABxxLdUh2USUIpwIddj3c0Ra

This. Only lte and Wi-Fi does your connection remain on, on 3G it disconnects.

Maybe I'm being misunderstood. I know data and voice don't work at the same time on 3G. I want the Hotspot to remain on, even without a data connection so the clients that are connected don't lose their connection to each other. Yes, I realize that they cannot connect to the interwebs but I use the Wifi AP to stream Plex from one device to another and it's a pain to reconnect and start the stream over. My kids also use it to play games together on their iPads.
Sorry for the misunderstanding.

My understanding is that if the data connection is lost, then hotspot turns off by itself. I'm not sure if I've ever seen any way to change this.
One thing you could do is use tasker or automate it to setup rules to turn it back on when your phone call has ended.

I'll give that a try. I don't recall it being that way prior to LP or on my S4. Oh well, thanks for the suggestion!

Ha, trade you phones, as mine does the opposite. Sent it in for repair. Unfortunately LG uses ground shipping, so it'll take a week for them to even receive it.
Have you checked the My T-Mobile app to see if the connections optimizer (or whatever they call it) is doing it?
