Hi Everyone:
I am so new to the development world. simple question:
I have managed to unlock the bootloader and root My HTC one.
How am I going to do software update later when AT&T release new one for the device? (I Know they are going to have the fixes for multiple bugs, like camera improvement, back and home button sensitivity issue, battery life, etc ).
will I loose the root after the update, or I can not even do update through OTA since I unlocked the bootloader?
will whatever way for the approaching wipes the data and apps?
How will it work? hope someone can answer my questions, thank you in advance!!
since you unlock the bootloader, you can not recived the OTA notification maybe.
I am in europe and I have to check for the update manually. I rooted the device and it is working fine. I tired to install the latest HTC software update (1.29.401.12) but it failed. It restarts the device and boots into TWRP.
Appreciate some insight.

I wouldn't worry about ota updates ever again. Every time an ota is released someone puts out a stock rooted rom you can flash via custom recovery.

thanks for the reply,
to this day, I still dont quite understand how the phone work when come to bootloader, recovery, custom Rom.
do you have a good artile about how they work? what are the relationship between?
I've been searching for a long time on this but can't get an answer that's current. So my question is: If I have an OTA 4.3 updated phone with the stupid locked bootloader, and I want to install a custom ROM, is there a way to do that yet? I know I can root using saferoot, which I've already done, but I want to install cyanogenmod. Any way to do this or am I still stuck? If I am still stuck, is anyone working on it anymore, or is it a lost cause? Thanks
As far as I know a locked bootloader equals no custom recovery(CWM,TWRP,Philz). This in turn means no custom rom(Cyanogenmod or any other ROM).
Device model?
That would help determine if there is any support out there for unlocking the bootloader.
I'm facing the same issue with a Huawei H881C aka Huawei Ascend Plus (Tracfone version)
Dang locked bootloaders... why do they torture us so?
At least we have root...

Hey guys,
Thanks in advance for any help you can give on the subject.
I just bought a Sony Xperia Z Ultra from eBay, arrived a couple of days ago, in great working condition. The firmware installed is 4.2.2, and I can't upgrade past there.
I contacted Sony and they told me it's because the IMEI number puts it's origin in Hong Kong which is why I can't update it. The only thing I can do is contact Sony Hong Kong, and I'm having a difficult time doing so.
Does anyone have a fix or workaround for this situation?
I was thinking I could root it and put an upgraded version of android on there, but as I'm not sure how rooting works, I thought I'd ask if there were any alternative options.
At this point, I'm thinking I'm just going to have to send it back, reason being when I chose this phone, one of the main points was because of the soon to be released 5.0 update.
Thanks,

As far as I know you should be able to use flashtool and flash a stock ftf for your region, or wait for 5.0 to be released and then flash it.

Thank you for getting back to me.
I may wait for 5.0. I'll need to learn how to use a flashtool with android first.
Quick couple of questions. Would using a flashtool to flash a stock ftf require the phone to be rooted?
Also, do you know if there is anyway I could use the Google Play firmware on my non-Google play edition?

Flashtool does not require root. The GPe firmware has to be "ported" to run on Sony Z Ultra due to different partition sizes. For 4.4 there is the option to use it with locked or unlocked bootloader. For 5.0 it is only for unlocked bootloader.

Thank you again for getting back to me.
Do you know if there is a tutorial for both porting the GPe firmware and for installing 4.4 using a bootloader? As I'm not even sure where to start with this, I'm not even sure what the difference between a locked and unlocked bootloader is. But I don't want to use up all your time, so if you can point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks again,

It has already been ported here in this thread linked below, UB and LB are short for unlocked bootloader and locked bootloader. The second post has instructions for locked install, and a simple explanation of bootloader is a set of instructions for loading the kernel so locked will only load stock. The kernel is the interface between software and hardware as I understand it.

This thread is up to date if you wish to read up on rooting and unlocking methods. Please don't hesitate to ask questions as it would be better than stumbling into a mess that could be avoided.

Thank you for all the information.
I've done a bit of research, and read through most of what you linked.
I'm slightly confused. As far as I understand it right now, if my bootloader is locked, I can only flash official ROMs. If my bootloader is unlocked, then I can flash any ROM I want, as long as it's compatible with my phone, but I will lose the Sony Bravia engine if I do so, is that correct? I'm not too bothered about this, just curious if this is true.
Where I am really confused, is the part where in the requirements of LB Rom Port, it said
"Be on 4.4.4 firmware (only .108)"
I'm currently stuck on 4.2, and can't get my phone to 4.4.4 with either the built in software or Sony Pc Companion. Is there a guide somewhere on how I can upgrade to 4.4.4 without using the two methods just mentioned?
I've also had a search and not been able to find a 5.0 GPe ROM Port either, guessing no one has bothered with it?
Thanks again,

I seem to have also lost the miracast screen mirroring after unlocking bootloader, if you root then back up the TA first it can be restored. I don't have any experience with pc companion, usually when it is mentioned it is because someone couldn't get it to work. In those instances flashtool is recommended to use. Here is a guide for flashtool. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2428319
And link for 5.0 GPe port.

Thank you for the links, again, much appreciated.
I was able to find an official thread for Sony Roms, and think I've found the ROM I need to upgrade to 4.4.4.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2453921
STOCK ROM] [FTF] Xperia Z Ultra (C6833) 14.4.A.0.108 "US RETAIL"
I assume this one will be ok, though I'm unsure. My phones model number is C6833, and this was the only 14.4.A.0.108 ROM I could find, and as far as I've seen, that's the recommended one for 4.4.4, assuming I haven't done anything wrong.
And just double checking, do I Need to root the phone to put the 5.0 GPE port on?
Thanks,

I was able to use FlashTool to update the phone to the official 4.4.4 ROM, so that you very much for all your help.
I think I may just end up sticking with the Xperia ROM, in favor of rooting and installing a port. I'm actually really liking the 4.4.4 Xperia version.
Thank you very much for all your help, I really appreciate it, wouldn't of been able to do this without your help.

That's good that you got updated. If you decide later to try custom ROMs or the ports be sure to root, then backup the TA partition before unlocking the bootloader. If you wanted to stay on stock but add some customizations you could root and install xsposed framework modules.

There is no root for 6.0 unless there is a bootloader unlock
If the method you see on srs is real im sure you see it here on xda that 6.0 is rootable
Untill then root is not possible on 6.0
If you are on 5.1 i do have a video that shows you how to root 5.1

Why is this being said? 5.1.1 on Verizon V10 got rooted without bootloader unlock.
Not that I have anything to offer here for root but it kind of seems no one is trying. This Phone has horrible developer support. Idk why since this is such a great phone.
5.1.1 rooted without bootloader unlock. All the way up until root was achieved for 5.1.1 people kept saying bootloader must be unlocked, which obviously wasn't true.
While he claims to have it working, it is not tested on marshmallow LG Verizon phones.

if i was a dev i can tell you, but all the post that talks about root and questions about root, downgrades etc. i subscribed to the post, thats the answer i see, maybe someone can put it into detail for you
all i know is they need the bootloader to be unlocked so it can be modified, without the bootloader being unlocked and you just root the system, it will just fail and this is true ive tried it on my G4
i tried upgrading my g4 and it got ito a bootloop and when i KDZ it it knows its been modified and no one knows why fter doing a factory reset unless you KDZ it,
if you want a downgrad, that is not possable but there was talk about it in another post but no one had gotten around it for the V10 cause they work, have a life and family
someone may step up and do the work, its all a matter of time, it may take 2 years like i heard 1 device they want rooted took 2 years before it got root
hacking, modifying bricking and waiting to get a replacement takes time and money for the research to be done with the time the dev has
Well unless there is something specifically different about MM 6.0 unlocked bootloader not needed for root. Every VS990 owner with 5.1.1 already knows this.
The same was said about Lollipop 5.1.1 in the months prior to root, that unlocked bootloader was needed for root. This obviously was not true since 5.1.1 was rooted without bootloader unlock.
OEM unlock for VZW lg10 vs990 MMallow
I got my unlock OEM dev options marked... Its super simple.... Just saying... Message me if interested. I'm super excited to finally start the rooting process, my first time ever. Some help would be sees him shpanx
seems that all the "developers" have disappeared as of late. Havent seen one even make a comment now that rooting requires a bit more of a challenge.
Hi Guys,
i just received a notification about a security patch update (MIUI 11.0.9.0) which invite me to reboot my phone to proceed.
My 9s is under MIUI11 global 11.0.8, unlocked and rooted.
So my newbie question, what will happen after the reboot (if i proceed to the update)?
I'm not sure about what i read concerning that topic. Do i will loose root or something else?
Thank you beforehand for your answer.

no, i tried it and i'm still rooted. but if for some reason it gets removed rooted again, i've had an experience where i flashed my phone back to stock rom, and lost root, and was locked out again. After unlocking it with miui unlocker it was perfect.
Thx for the answer, in hoping it can help others (in being honest, since that time, i went already to a custom rom ^^).
