Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 YP-G70 Soft-Bricked... - Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, 5.0

Hi guys, new poster here. After researching the threads on here and on other sites, I can't seem to find the exact solution to fix this. I've got a U.S. version that when trying to update the stock ROM from Gingerbread 2.3.5 to 2.3.6, I accidentally booted up my device during the initial install process through Odin. When I did that my device went into the forced download mode with the "Phone triangle to PC " error screen. I'm not exactly sure where to go from here, as I can't get into the normal (maintenance) download mode or Recovery Mode.
When I first tried to install the 2.3.6 software, guided by the instructions in the following thread title (can't post the link since it's my first time, sorry), "[How to] Upgrade SGP 5.0 to Android v2.3.6" posted by Sanchezhacker on anything but ipod's website, here is what I ended up with:
<ID:0/005> Added!!
<ID:0/005> Odin v.3 engine (ID:5)..
<ID:0/005> File analysis..
<ID:0/005> SetupConnection..
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)
I'd like to be able to install 2.3.6 but I'm not exactly sure how to get out of the forced download mode first.
How do I get out of download mode and how can I install 2.3.6 from there?
Your input is greatly appreciated!!
Thank you, and God bless!!

Forced Download Mode only happens when there is something critically wrong with the current state of your Player. I recommend that you return to stock

Meticulus, I really appreciate your help, thank you for it.
Well, when I tried to download your file in the link you gave me, I waited until 4shared's wait to download timer ran out and here's the message I got once it did, "Sorry, the file link that you requested is not valid. Sign error."
Any ideas for a workaround?

Alrighty, I just downloaded the ZIP file, unpacked it, now do I run it through Odin? I have Odin 1.85 installed. I tried to run it in Odin's software using the PDA tab, plugged my device in and linked the file to Odin and clicked "Start", here's the results I got,

Not sure why it failed... Any suggestions?
To be honest, some step-by-step instructions would help me a lot. Thank you.

Just curious to see if there's any update on this? I'm still not sure how to install the md5 file to my SGP using Odin, like I had mentioned above.

Sorry, busy lately but it looks like you did it properly. Normally all you have to do is put the *.md5 file in PDA and hit start. Looks like you did that and it still did not work. I suggest that you download the first tar ( not zip ) file here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445840
This is a custom kernel with a custom recovery in it. flash the .tar file the same way you did with the .md5 file. Click PDA; select the tar file; click start.
See if that succeeds. If it does, attempt to get into recovery like this :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uzu4uDTDL5k
NOTE: Video shows how to get to download mode but just use the opposite volume key to get to recovery.
Then let me know what happens....:highfive::highfive:

Come to think of it, I don't believe it has. Except for the process of getting it bricked, with my dumb move to try and power it up in the middle of the install process of 2.3.6, haha. That was a bad move on my part. But no, it hasn't.

Soft Bricked Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0
Hello,
First, I am sorry to jump in this thread, but I am having the exact problem listed in this thread. I picked up this player at a hamfest in NC. The battery was dead. But when I plugged it in to charge, the screen was black with a little phone symbol, an orange triangle, and a computer.
I have tried all the instruction that were posted, with the same results. So if you have any other suggestions I'd appreciate it.
thank you

Hey Johnny, I figured you've been busy, but I'm still out of service with my Galaxy Player, I'm not sure exactly how to go about using Ubuntu and running Linux. I really appreciate your help thus far, but it's been almost a month and still no luck with the darn device... Maybe it's time to look for a replacement, possibly..

I'm sorry guys; I've owned my Galaxy Player 5 since 2011 and I have bricked it several times since then and I have never come across a situation that I could not bring the player back from but, as a (self taught)developer I am pretty good at diagnostic and evaluation procedures. The first step in that is to gather as much information about the problem as possible.
There is a program called heimdall that is like odin but it works on the linux command line that can give more information about what is happening during a flash and it "might" give you a better idea about what is the problem.
The biggest problem that I have run across with this device is that the partition table gets mangled some how and therefore odin does not know where to put data. This can ususally be fixed by flashing a custom kernel like Entropy's Daily Driver and then booting into recovery and using partition tools to carefully reconstruct the table...
Then again, the hardware may actually be damaged...

Sorry for the bump, but as of August I've been enrolled in the Computer Information Systems program at my local technical school, so I've been really busy with that here lately. We're about to learn how to run Linux using VirtualBox for the first time in our Operating Systems Concepts class. I figured I'd let you guys know so I can maybe get somewhere with fixing my GP using Heimdall while running Linux.
I really hope the hardware isn't damaged.
Update: I downloaded VirtualBox on my laptop this past week and was able to successfully install Linux. I just need to install Heimdall using VirtualBox.

[Q] ODIN stuck while flashing

Hey, guys, I got a problem here, it's weird because I wasn't trying to flash when it started, the phone was ok, then froze, I tried to power off, but it didn't work, so I took off the battery. I put it on again, and the screen was freezing on the Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I900I screen (EDIT: The right name is GT-i9100), I decided to flash to a stock rom with Odin, I put in the download mode, Odin recognized the phone but when I started to flash, Odin stuck in the middle of the process, I tried in all different usb ports of my laptop, I killed all the Kies processes, but it keeping sticking at the same point of the flashing. Please, somebody give me a hand here.
ps: I tried more than one rom, and it happens the same all the time.
I also uninstalled the usb ports and reinstalled, but nothing changes..
Try a different PC and or
[PROGRAM] Heimdall - Open-Source Cross-Platform Flashing Suite (1.3.0 Available)
Never used it yet, but worth a shot?

It seems that you have soft bricked the phone with a bad/interrupted flash.
Please, download this package : http://hotfile.com/dl/130600047/b70801e/I9100XXKI3.rar.html
And flash it.
Small guide :
IN ODIN :
1. Tick Re-partition, Auto-Reboot and F. Reset Time ( the top 3)
2. Put the .PIT file in the PIT section
3. CODE in PDA
4. MODEM in Phone
5. CSC in CSC
IN THE PHONE :
6. Turn it off
7. Enter Download mode
8. Connect to PC
9. Start Flashing
10. Wait, and DON'T INTERRUPT!
Good luck
Also try different USB cables
If you follow this method and download ROMs here: [ROM+Guide]Official i9100 Firmwares KG, KH, KI, KJ, KK1/2/5, KL1/2/3, LA2 Download
Pay particular attention to the Flashing Firmware with Odin Instructions step #5 "DO NOT PUT .PIT FILE AND DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT TICK REPARTITION". This stuff is last resort or for those that are 100% sure what they're doing.
Guys, I think my phone is gone..

I haven't tried with Heimdall because I don't now how it works, somebody got a tutorial or something like this?
Question what is a I900I that is what is I model ???
As your problem reads like trying to flash a firmware for a wrong phone model .

Alright then... Time to copy/paste my apparently-Holy solution
Flash this recovery package, which is XXKI3, 2.3.5, Open Europe http://hotfile.com/dl/130600047/b70801e/I9100XXKI3.rar.html
If that doesn't work or fails, flash this, which is a XXKI3 Kernel : http://www.multiupload.com/WDOO81L5H6. After that, re-flash the recovery package (with PIT and repartitiong, but be careful )
Report back if it doesn't work, and good luck!
If that doesn't work, flash the old bootloader : http://www.multiupload.com/LQQBRQVJUD in either the PDA or Bootloader section in ODIN. If that is successful, flash the Kernel again, and then the XXKI3 recovery package I gave you.
Thanks, Phistachio, for helping me..
so.. I tried the recovery method, no success (stuck), the kernel (stuck), the bootloader worked, then it came back to Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-i9100 screen, I put in download mode again, and tried the Kernel as you said, but.... stuck , tried the stock rom again, and continue sticking... I'm so sad, but the people say when get in the download mode, there is still hope, so...
by any chance, do you have another solution? I understand if you give up on me, it seems my problem is serious ;(
Did you try the Heimdall method I posted in post #2 ? Give it a try.

Are you using ODIN V1.83 or 85?
This can't be a hard brick.
Can you go to recovery mode? If so, wipe cache and data.
Then try to reflash
UpInTheAir, I didn't try the Heimdall method because I don't know how to flash with Heimdall, do you have anytutorial or simple guide how to use it?
Phistachio, I'm using Odin3 v.1.85. The recovery mode is the combo [vol up+home+power button] right? If so, it's not entering anymore, when I had the problem I could get in there, I tried to wipe all the things but it didn't work.
Do you guys think it could be a hardware problem?
OK, did a search for you, doesn't seem too difficult.......
Download here: http://www.glassechidna.com.au/products/heimdall/
For Windows, download:
1.Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86)
2. Heimdall Suite 1.3.1 (Binaries)
Maybe need to install the drivers, not sure. If your device is dected by Heimdall in Download Mode, maybe work.........
Guide for version 1.3.1 heimdall-frontend here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1196179
EDIT: STEP BY STEP GUIDE FROM VEYKA
This is for I9000 but has been known to work with SGS2.

Maybe try just flash the kernel with Odin, so you can get recovery back.
You could also try flash one of Chainfire CF-root kernel to install CWM recovery, and then flash a custom ROM.zip directly from sdcard.
Got a feeling that your partitions are corrupted. That's why using PIT is not recommend and only last resort.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
This doesn't sound bricked.
I reckon you can fix it via heimdall, flashing each partition individually...
Failing that, your last resort is to do a full repartition, using pit

It's not hard bricked, but a kernel flash SHOULD have been siccessful, since DL Mode is working...

If you take a quick look at the recent posts, the OP had not indicated trying Heimdall as yet. He asked for a guide that I subsequently posted.

Guys, I downloaded Heimdall, installed .Microsoft Visual C++ and downloaded the 2.3.4 Heimdall firmware package for stock GT-I9000 firmwares, from the that thread, so I followed the guide, I removed all the stuff, but the Kernel one and tried to flash, that's the result:
Initialising connection...
Detecting device...
ERROR: Failed to access device. libusb error: -12
It seems like Heimdall doesn't detect the phone? Sorry for being a noob and I really appreciate all the effort from you guys, I really do.
EDIT:
I entered in the drivers session, put all devices, and it found some drivers of my pc and one called Gadget Serial, so I installed it, ok, back to Heimdall, I selected the stock 2.3.4 one, deleted all the stuff and left the Kernel, unchecked Repartition and now I got this:
Checking if protocol is initialised...
Protocol is not initialised.
Initialising protocol...
ERROR: Failed to initialise protocol!
EDIT:
It looks live the phone is officially dead now, it doesn't turn on and it was very hot after I left the Download Mode. I'm gonna try to turn it on tomorrow and start look for a new one/warranty/what I can sell from this phone and etc...
Thanks again, guys, you were the best.
Bummer
Looks like you tried to flash 9000 firmware package, not 9100.
Edit: Maybe try remove battery for a few minutes, and download mode again, or USB jig to force it.

[Q] Galaxy S4 Unroot / Unbrick Problems

Hello,
I have a problem unrooting/unbricking my Galaxy S4 for Verizon. I followed step-by-step processes and it seems to not work properly for me. I downloaded "Odin3 v.1.85" and the stock firmware, "GalaxyS4/SCH-i545/VRUAMDK_NoWipe.tar.zip" and "SCH-I545_MDK_562219_Stock_Restore.tar.md5" for Verizon. I put my phone into the Download Mode and began the process of unrooting using Odin. I made sure that my device was connected. I clicked PDA and chose the stock firmware for my phone. I clicked Start and it begins. As soon is it begins, it says it is not responding, but I wait a few seconds and it responds. After that, it continues where it left off for the unrooting process. The process turned out to be a fail. Here's the message:

sounds like you were already on v7 baseband try getting that stock image and go through odin.
because you cant go back to the original baseband (which is the md5 you listed) but I had similiar issues.

yep. I only wanted to make sure you did install the update or otherwise some of the 32gb s4 come with it preinstalled.
just saying this because updating to me7 is irreversible you wont be able to flash roms right now only apply a root
download the me7 md5 this time and do all the same steps I followed this guide

Alright. I'll follow these steps and I'll get back to here and let you know. Thank you.
I'm in the process of downloading the ME7 you told me about, but isn't this rooting my phone? I want to reformat my phone and have everything wiped out.

if you can't get the usb port (charging port) to work with communicating to your computer then there really isn't much you can do. Have you tried cleaning the contacts off inside the port? Are you sure its NOT the cable?
This has been talked about somewhere else here in this forum

Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II Stuck On Bootloop

Hey guys, I know this is a topic that's gone over and over again, but I didn't want to hijack someone else's thread. First off, I don't know much about rooting phones, ODIN, ROMs, or any of that, so bear with me.
I rooted my Note II awhile back with ODIN (couldn't give you the specifics unless you want me to find the guide that led me through it). Everything worked fine up until I plugged my phone into my laptop and VZW upgrader decided to update my phone without my permission, and now it's stuck on the bootloop where all you see is the black screen with the Samsung logo popping up every second or so. I can access the custom ROM download screen though, so hopefully it can be fixed.
If possible, I would love to be able to keep all data on the phone (ironically enough, I was hooking it up to my PC to back it up when this happened).
Thank you in advance, and please be as noob-friendly as you can. Links to step-by-steps and pictures are appreciated.
Can you be a little more elaborate... Which rom you were having and what file you used in odin.... Which rom for installed on your mobile by verizon etc

Okay, it says "KNOX WARRANTY VOID: 0"
The whole text on the download screen reads:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SCH-1605
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: No
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Custom
KNOX WARRANTY VOID: 0
RP SWREV: A2
The Verizon update was the latest. I'm not sure on details. I just plugged it in and VZW Software Upgrade Assistant started auto-upgrading.
Then you need to install stock 4.3 rom only and not any custom rom.... You may download the same and install it via odin

Where can I download the 4.3 ROM and how do I install? I'm sorry. I wish I knew more about rooting and ROMs and such, but I'm a total noob when it comes to this. I greatly appreciate your help.
EDIT: I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but I just don't want to end up with an expensive paperweight. Any details are very appreciated.
Go to sammobile and download from firmware option.... Give your model number there.... Select the 4.3 rom from the list.... Download pit file and odin too....

Here is a brief how-to:
1. download the Stock rom and odin.
2. Restart your phone. Before the phone has a chance to start hold the volume down key + home key + power key all at once. This takes you into download mode. Download screen opens press volume up key to get into download mode.
3. Open Odin and in the PDA slot: locate your Stock rom you downloaded and select it. Odin will verify it and you should see in left pain it saying it succeeded
4. Make sure only the checkboxes (on the left side) “Auto Reboot” and “F. Reset Time” are checked
5. click Start
This will install the stock rom. Phone will reboot and go into recovery mode then reboot again I believe, trying to recall that from memory.
If your phone gets into the Logo screen loop and wont load phone, Try this:
1. Download the Pit file for the phone – do a search on XDA and youll find it.
2. Put phone into download mode like stated above,
3. Open Odin
4. In the Pit slot locate your downloaded Pit file and select it.
5. Make sure “Auto Reboot” and “F. Reset Time” and “Re Partition” are checked
6. Click Start
Using the Pit file is used in rare cases and as a Last resort as it can cause your phone to Brick if it fails in the Flash process.
I assume no responsibility for you trying this and using this method I have mentioned. It has worked for me but may not for you.
I hope this helps

Make sure you are using the usb cable that came with the phone as alot of aftermarket cords dont work well for this type of procedure, if not available try another cord. Do this before flashing the pit file.
Download the Pit file, and run the pit file first. See if that works. You may also want to let the phone try and load and see if it works before doing the Rom flash.
If the pit file flashes then run Odin again and flash with the Rom image.
Success!!! The re-partition fixed it! I'm so happy to not have bricked my phone. Thank you to everyone who helped.
I think I'm gonna stay safe with stock phones for awhile, haha.
Oh, should I still flash the ROM? It seems to be working just fine after the re-partition. Could anything go wrong?

Awesome, I am glad you got it to work with the PIT file. In my experience as long as you can get the phone back up and running with the PIT file you are good to go. If you notice down the road that some instability issues occur you could flash back to rom, but at this point your good.

Oh I thought Id mention incase you hadnt noticed, you most likely lost root, not sure what you your needs of root are but if you do need root check the forums for rooting the new 4.3.
I did mine using a program that I never used before (wasnt from XDA) but it worked.
Big draw back in 4.3 is Wifi tethering now gets checked by verizon so it blocks third party widgets from working around it. There is a mod for that if you get 4.3 rooted but, I havent found the thread for mod yet on here, but it exists.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S II I9100G not going to Download Mode or Recovery Mode

Hi
I am in a serious trouble.
I am having a Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100G
Its running on Stock Rom JB v4.1.2
I wanted to update it to Kitkat 4.4.2 by CyanogenMod 11 Custom Rom.
In order to do that i have rooted my phone using VRoot.
Installed CWM Recovery 6.0.1.2
Copied the ROM files and Gapps to SD Card.
Done all the prerequisite and started installing the ROM.
Then the installation failed showing Error Status 7.
Upon googling about status 7 i got to know that the CWM Recovery 6.0.1.2 which i used doesn't support for
installing CM11.
Then i searched for the latest CWM Recovery and got to know about the Philz CWM Touch Recovery 6.0.4.5
I also got to know that in order to install Philz CWM Touch Recovery 6.0.4.5 you need to have a PC with Odin
v3.09 installed to flash this latest CWM Recovery.
Then i downloaded philz_touch_6.19.3-i9100g.tar.md5.
Installed Odin v3.09 in my PC.
Gone into Download mode by pressing Home + Volume Down + Power Button then warning screen came up then by
pressing volume up i came into download mode.
Then i connected my device to PC using USB cable. I got the added message. I also got the COM Port number.
But instead of Yellow as said in the tutorial i got Light Blue Color which i ignored. I thought the Odin
software might had made any changes to their software.
I clicked the AP button and selected the TAR file downloaded then clicked the START button.
Again failed. I don't know why that happened.
I removed the USB cable and reinserted then done the same. Then some message came and process is going on...
waited for 20 mins till nothing was happening.
Fed up of all the process i removed the USB cable thinking of forgetting Kitkat and use the stock rom.
After removing the USB cable suddenly a message flashed on the screen.
Firmware update encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again.
Whatever i do only this is appearing on screen.
Nor it's going into Download Mode or Recovery Mode.
Please help me in recovering my phone to Stock ROM or Custom ROM.
Last hope is jig. It force download mode when.you cant by pressing buttons. If this doesnt help i think that your phone is now a clip for paper. In odin you should choose pda and after that choose kernel. I never had blue sign in odin but i had i9100. You should from the beghinig try philz kernel to root amd get cwm recovery. So as i sad you must try jig usb very cheap thing or you can do it by yourself. Maybe you should either try kies and kies recovery firmware.

Here's where your problems are.
1. Never unplug your cable during an Odin flash. Wait till it fails. Else you'll get trouble, guaranteed.
2. You're in forced download mode. Flash a Stock ROM using Odin while it says 'firmware update encountered an issue'.
3. Instead of using Odin with Philz, next time you can just flash Philz directly from the external SD card (at least on i9100, not sure about the i9100G). Much easier.
Regarding the blue in Odin, I'm pretty sure that's OK. I've seen reports of other people getting blue instead of yellow. I've always had yellow myself but wouldn't hesitate to flash if it was blue.
Newer versions of Odin have blue in the ID:COM field.
Done as said by you

Why did you flash Philz? I said to flash a stock ROM with Odin, not flash Philz.... Click the Odin link in my signature and you can find a 3-part firmware, which will wipe as it flashes. DO NOT flash the 3-part firmware, you have an i9100G. You need to download a stock ROM from Samfirmware or similar. Instructions are in the thread. If it fails again, then follow all of the troubleshooting steps. Keep flashing till you get a successful flash. There's nothing else you can't try which is in that thread, so keep at it.
Edit: Stop. There is no Philz kernel for i9100G. Why on earth did you flash it? It only exists for i9100. Not the 'G' variant. What to do from here? Flash a stock ROM via Odin, like I said to start with, make sure it's for an i9100G.
However, now that you've unplugged the cable during a flash, and flashed the wrong file at least twice, I'm not holding out high hopes for your phone recovering from this.
The ability of people to read & comprehend the help they've been given here & then actually do what's been suggested seems to get worse & worse as time goes by.
Give some very specific advice (step by step stuff, or refer them to step by step stuff), they go do something completely different. I mean, if that's going to happen, why bother asking for help in the first place ?
@MistahBungle, read the edit on my previous post (if you haven't seen it already). Do you agree the only chance is a stock ROM? I don't know, I don't see many this stuffed up very often.
Edit: Unless, there is a Philz for i9100g. But I can't find an XDA thread for it just by having a cursory glance.
Yep. Flashing a stock rom & praying is pretty much the only option. Classic case of 'attempting to do without learning'. Imagine how much **** these people would be in if the half dozen of us or so who post most of the useful help here decided to move on ?
I did find Philz for i9100g, but it's ages old (newest one I could find was 6.19.3, think Philz is up to 6.30.something). There's also no xda thread for it, so I'm tipping that the i9100 version has been flashed. Still not holding high hopes even with a correct stock ROM.
I know, there's less people here than when I started by a long shot. You're by far the most active on here, but I thought you had an S4? I'll be getting the N5 in a month or so. I still plan to be in S2 threads but obviously to a lesser extent.
I do have an S4, but apart from the first couple of months, lost interest in modding it. I want stuff to 'just work' these days for the most part. I do run a custom rom/kernel, I just haven't changed it in ages & not interested in anything that trips Knox. Just can't be bothered putting up with stuff not working/spending a lot of time trying to make it work.
So...I accumulated a lot more knowledge of the S2, given I spent 18 mths or so actively modding it.
Understood. Yes that's what seems to be happening more now, phones which, if they're not on stock ROM, lose a lot of functionality/have stuff 'not work' for whatever reason. Like the GNote & its S-pen, HTC One and boomsound, Sony and its Bravia engine. I assume you still own the S2 anyway...
While you're here, is there anything in the Odin troubleshooting guide you've noticed which should be changed? I read over it again the other day but couldn't see anything major. If you don't want to read/comment no problem, asking as you're the resident Odin guru.
Yeah still have the S2. Haven't switched in on in 6 mths tho.
Nah, you've got everything covered in your thread. It's a great resource ('Odin expert' ? Hardly. I just read/learned a lot )
Mmm I imagine it's not the greatest experience after using a phone 3yrs newer for a while Cool. I added a couple little things just now (another pit file thread (shudder) which is quite well done & re-hosted the 3-part firmware instead of dropbox. Nothing special). Ok, call yourself what you want but what I'm sure of, is that by being on Q&A so much you have a lot more troubleshooting knowledge than probably anyone else for S2

I have downloaded the Stock ROM for GT-I9100 Indian Version from Sammobile. I don't know what is 3-part firmware.
Now what i am going to do is Connect the phone to my PC showing (Firmware update encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again) screen.
Then by clicking AP button selecting the TAR file extracted from the Zip file (Stock ROM).
Double check that only AUTO REBOOT & F.RESET TIME checkboxes are selected.
Hit Start and try my luck.
Shall i go ahead. Waiting for your nod...

Edit - Hang on, I hope you downloaded I9100G firmware. If you downloaded I9100 Indian firmware, don't flash that.

Error 402 when updating to Lolipop?

Looks like the rollout today came in 2 updates. I downloaded the first and installed with no problem but the 2nd which actually puts in lolipop can't install. It says error 402, google/the Verizon forums doesn't have any info on it.
I have the same issue. I have tried Wifi and the Verizon Software Assistant download, and neither works. I am on the hunt for any suggestions as to how to get past this. Since I have just Factory Reset my phone, I will try pretty much anything.
I had 402 error. I downloaded I545VRUFNK1_I545VZWFNK1_I545VRUFNK1_HOME.tar from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-to-root-i545vrufnk1-4-4-2-12-1-2014-t2959613
Extract the .tar file
Install with Odin v3.09+ (put the .tar file in AP slot) and put phone in download mode
It will keep all data.
After reboot install both updates again.

Negative. But I knew that before.
If you're having trouble with the Odin portion of this, check to see if you're using USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port. My issues seemed to be directly related to using 3.0. No idea why, or whether or not this is a known thing but I'm Odin-ing successfully right now. I'm leaving the "struggle" report in case it might help somebody who has gone through the same process unsuccessfully. Cheers
Followed the Odin instructions. Get a Fail. Using original cable. Here's the log:

I made it to NK4 on the OTAs so maybe flashing NK1 won't work? Gonna try the NG6 and NK1 FULL WIPE Odin file. (found here: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95916177934540736)
The good news is that I can still get into download mode after a battery pull so I'm just going to try and find another Odin file.
Tried using a Pit file given there's no partition. Didn't work. Looks like I've got a morning of thread crawling to look forward to.
As crazy as this might sound, I found the answer for me on Verizon's actual forums from a Verizon customer service rep! That NEVER happens. I almost entirely dismissed it. He told someone asking about this problem, "If that doesn't work, the manufacturer has another way to install the update." I thought that sounding interesting. The link took me to Samsung Kies (an app for the PC) and there you have a choice to install either Kies or Kies3. For some reason it suggests we need Kies, but Kies3 is actually what we need as our S4's have been updated beyond when this site was created.
After installing that, the app TRIES to suggest that we're better off with Smart-something or other, but that's just for transferring contacts and such between two phones. Ignore that and just connect your phone via cable to the PC and Kies will see it and tell you there's an update. It then installed the update without a hitch!
What's amazing is that I also own a Samsung Galaxy Note Pro (the 12.2 inch tablet) that had some issues. However, it would never say there was any sort of update and I could never find one mentioned online. Kies said there was one and installed it. Now the tablet's snappier and better than ever. What a surprise find....
Agrajag27 - OMG, thank you very much! That worked, simple update, and I am on lollipop! Great find!
