Soft brick? - LG G5 Questions & Answers

Hi brainstrust,
Big fan of the site, long time reader, first time poster.
In early May I purchased my H860. It's worked very well for me since then, the only gripe being a lack of rootability. I figured the silver lining to this would be that it would be more difficult to mess up something important and cause the phone to brick. Unfortunately, that hasn't proven to be the case.
Last night, I attempted to unlock my phone. It wouldn't respond to either touching or pressing the fingerprint sensor / power button. I hadn't been doing anything with it earlier that night, it had probably been sitting on a bench for an hour or so idle. Assuming that the batteries were flat, I plugged it in to charge. It immediately showed the "LG Life's Good Powered by Android" splash screen, which stayed on for about 10 seconds. The screen then went blank for a second or two, and the splash screen came back again. This cycle repeated itself till the battery was pulled.
I have tried leaving the phone to charge overnight, assuming that perhaps the battery is so deeply discharged that it doesn't even have the juice necessary to turn on. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to charge the battery without the phone automatically turning on. It's unclear whether this is an issue with the phone's software or with the battery not charging. I have attempted various button combinations to get into recovery mode but I have been unable to do so. By holding the up volume button while plugging the phone into a PC I was able to get into download mode, but then the rebooting cycle began again after about 20 seconds.
I have the option of sending it back to my retailer however I will be without the phone for at least 2 weeks. If you guys have any ideas, I'd be very grateful to hear them.

Hi - enter Recover mode:
Press and hold Vol- and Power button. If you see the LG Logo you have to (fast) let go the Power button and (fast) press it again.

Thanks for your reply, unfortunately instead of going into recovery mode, the phone continues with this rebooting cycle.

Then you pressed false or to slow.
Put your Batterie out of the Device and then in. After thats try it again.
(Sry for my english)

If you have the cam add-on you can charge the battery without the phone, obviously you have not. Doubt that is the problem though. What happens when you plug into pc

An empty battery appears with a circle in the middle, as if it's thinking about starting to charge, then the rebooting cycle starts. Same thing happens if I plug it into a power socket.

Try to boot into fastboot mode. In this Mode the Phone can charge.
When the device is OFF, press and hold two buttons, the Power button and Volume Upbutton in the same time for several seconds. In the same time, get the USB cable and use it to connect your device with your computer to create a connection. When you see Fastboot / Download Modemode is being displayed, then you can release those buttons.

Hi all,
Just thought I'd update the thread as the matter is now resolved. I gave up and sent the device back to the supplier, and they have diagnosed some kind of mainboard failure. I've had a refund processed and am back to using the Nexus 5. I'm hoping to upgrade to the new Nexus when it comes out.
Thanks for all your suggestions

This was definitely a hardware issue. The LG bootloop strikes again =(

[Q] Is there any real fix for sleep of death?

Dear all,
I have my new tab (64Gb/3G/wifi) for one week and I cannot power on since few days.
I'm sure that the battery is full because it was in charge all the night.
I tried many things (holding power button during 5, 10, 30, 120 seconds, holding power and volume left button) but each attempt failed.
I just know that when I connect it to the laptop, Windows sounds as it is recognizing an USB device but 2 seconds later sounds as the device was removed....
Is there any way to fix the problem? Have I to send the tab to the samsung support?
Thanks for your help... :-(

Mine does it occasionally. I hold the power button down for a long time and let go - repeating as necessary until it revives itself.

Mine doesn't revive with that....
That's why I need to know if there is a real fix for this issue...
Try holding power and volume down button at the same time dor aprox. 15 seconds. Then you should see the "download" logo. Then press volume down to switch to CVM - acknowledge with volume up. Then in CVM just choose reboot.
Hope it helps you

I'm leaning toward faulty.
This one looks to have worked for mine - Tab locked up and died on Sunday, and *fingers crossed* looks to have just come back to life (within the last 10 mins so am not 100% sure).
Leave the battery to discharge completely. Then charge it up. That's it.
With the lack of screen output, the only way i could see to tell if the battery is dead is to plug it into a PC via the USB cable. If you get ADX mode then it's not discharged. Leave it a bit and try again. When you plug it in, if it doesn't show ADX mode make sure you press and hold the power button for a few seconds to make sure it isn't just turned off.
**Edit**
Looking good so far. Am leaving it to charge for a bit before i turn it on but i can at least now press the power button briefly to get the battery indicator
**Edit 2**
Having left it to charge for a couple of hours i then took the plunge. Booted up no problem so it looks like this has worked for me.

I have this same issue. Mine was fine went to bed woke up and it was dead no life at all. I have done all button combos different cords and factory chargers nothing. I even swapped the battery for a new factory samsung battery inside nothing. i dont get anything when I plug it into my computers though no found sound or anything. I left the battery unhooked for an hour before connecting it to the board inside also. I now have the power button taped pressed for last 2 hours hopeing that will drain the battery like other have done and then I will try to hook it back up to a charger. Any other ideas why it was fine then next day dead?
Yes exist a fix back to 4.0.4 stock recovery and all bugs gone for me that works

I've been following the forums and I've never seen such an issue.
Try putting the tab in nvflash mode. Then try booting.
There is a thread in the general section.

Try recharging your unit. It might take a couple of tries. If that does not work, it could be your battery, mainboard or power button.
Problem solved
I disassemled the Cover (youtube vidoe will help) discennect and connect the battery, Tab will start and work normaly. Next Step, new ROM
Thanks a lot

[Q] please help!

Last night i fell asleep and my phone died all the way, and now when i plug it in all i get is a lg logo then it goes away and then a dark lit up screen. ive let it charge for awhile now and i still get nothing, i cant get into cwm either.. the phone is unlocked and rooted and im running the base rom. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Happened to me... leave it on the charger at least 3 hours and check it. The battery completely drains when you unplug the charger if you charged with the phone off. gl
Edit: If it still won't work, turn phone on and plug in charger.

This happened to me too. I completely drained the battery and it kept going into a loop (black screen, LG logo, battery screen). I left it plugged in and off and let it boot up.
FYI
This has happened to several people. I have confirmed through testing, even exchanging my phone 2 days ago that this is an issue created when unlocking the bootloader. Rooting does not cause it. Once the bootloader is unlocked, you can not get around this by re-locking the bootloader.
The workaround is simple. Either leave your phone on while it is charging or if you charge with phone off, unplug your charger and hit the power button- you will still see the charge animation running- this is what causes the battery to drain. All you have to do is power up the phone at least to boot then it is ok to turn off. You can confirm it worked by touching the power button again and not see the charge animation. Hope this helps.
Wow thanks so much for the reply and help! I've got it working now and I guess I'll just avoid it by not letting it die lol

well...
If you let it die all the way, its not a big deal. Plug it in, hold down the volume down button and the power button for 15 seconds, then it will work fine.
Threads like this makes this forum so great. Another potential problem to be avoided when using the phone.

I could use some help guys, if this thread isn't too old. I've searched high and low to the answer here and nothing is working. I've tried download mode, fastboot, recovery, reset, holding power down, plugging it in and unplugging it. I've pulled the plate off of the battery, tried LGNPST, drivers, etc. No go on anything.
The phone is still dead, and will not turn on. The best I've gotten is a solid red light after holding the power button for 15-20 seconds. Then after about 3-5 seconds it resumes flashing (alternating between the red light and the key buttons). If I continue holding the power button down it will repeat this, showing solid red and then reverting to flashing.
I can not get the screen to display anything, not even the charging animation, and none of my computers will even recognize the device. I've been messing with it all day and I'm stuck. If anyone can help me, at all, please do. I hate going to Sprint. Anything but that, please.

Phone is completely unresponsive

Went to restart the phone and now it appears to be completely dead. Won't switch on, and is completely unresponsive to any input: usb, hard reset switch, power etc. I have plugged in the phone to a computer as well and there is no "usb detected" on screen or anything. Is it reasonable to assume that this phone is fully bricked?
Did you try th red boton near the SIM card?

Yep
Try holding the power button for an extended time period. You can also do a ftf stock firmware.

Holding the button for over a minute does nothing, and the phone is simply not detected by any computer I plug it into. The orange LED doesn't even come on when I plug it into a charger :/
Possible that the battery went completely flat? Try plugging it into an AC wall charger for at least 6 hours and see if anything happens.

My wife's Z went dead during an update via PC Companion (light went out), and it didn't boot or show any life sign.
I used the Sony PC Service (only for PC), restored the phone to the original FW and all went well, nothing was deleted from it. Try it and see...

[Q] Please help! Stuck in Bootloop, power button "stuck", no download mode!!
I believe this has to do with the phone thinking the power button is constantly being pressed...
I'm looking for any advice. My s3 suddenly went into a boot loop this morning. It powers on for a few seconds and turns itself back off.. Doing a little research, came across similar issues online caused by the main board going faulty and the phone thinking the power button is constantly being held down.
I know this because I can remove my battery, put it back in, and without even touching any buttons, the phone will attempt to power up.
I'm currently rooted and can't get into download mode for more than 3-5 seconds before it turns itself off. I was only once able to apply the perfect pressure by squeezing the side of the phone which allowed it to boot normally, but about 30 seconds later, the power menu appeared by itself and it turned off a few seconds later.
Has this happened to anyone else?? Anybody know how to go about fixing it??

When you take out the battery, wait for a few seconds before putting it back in. If it turns on automatically then this might be hardware issue and needs repair.
Yes,it turns on automatically...i have disassembled the phone and checked the power buttom and it seems to work right,i can't understand where is the problem
Edit. OK,the problem is that the power buttom is hyper sensitive..can i do something to reduce the sensibility?

Is the power button known for wearing out on the phone? I take good care of my s3 afaik. Maybe it's time for a new phone.... =(

Happens from time to time. Maybe if it dropped or been pressed too many times.
