First what version of KIKAT are you on ? If you are on 4.4.4 NH7 or NK4 the latest upgrade then you can root with Chainfires CF-autoroot or his SuperSu v 1.94, v2.02 or 2.40 this will trip KNOX warranty. Towel Root will not work yet for NH7 or NK4. If you are still on 4.4.2 NC5 then you can use Towel Root to root your device, this will NOT trip KNOX warranty. If you root with Chainfires CF-autoroot or his SuperSu v 1.94 or v2.40 this will trip KNOX warranty on NC5. How to flash a fresh copy of a stock OS
1. download the version of KitKat you want to the desktop of your PC.
2. extract zip file to the desktop of your PC it will turn it into a .tar file
3. you need to install Samsung drivers on your PC you can get them from here http://www.mediafire.com/download/ti6xeoh2lx79zis/Samsung_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_v1.5.14.0.exe
4. download odin to your desktop here is the link ( version 1.85 ) https://mega.co.nz/#!oA5xzTAL!LXoVWBVDWN_7SULGPIv6nWx1gCI3ZZlOMSWdRGVX6Uo ( version 3.07 ) http://www.mediafire.com/download/2uxt5u83qxhz6xr/Odin_v307.zip
5. completely power down device, reboot into download mode (hold power button, home button, and volume down button at the same time, then push the volume up button)
6. open odin on desktop, connect device to PC via USB cable COM: will light up in upper left corner of odin doesn't matter what color it is just shows a connection.
7. click the PDA button a box will open click on desktop then on KitKat file to open
8. now don't touch anything else and click start
9. it will take several minutes, then say pass, and automatically reboot device with new OS/ROM ( this will take 3 to 4 min. after you see Samsung logo )
10. Important !!! If the device was rooted or you are trying to downgrade from NH7 or NK4 back to NC5 the device may bootloop on the startup. ( you will know this when the Samsung logo is still on the screen after 6 to 7 min. )
11. to fix bootloop pull battery then reinstall, boot into download mode and use odin to flash the OS/ROM again it will take the second time and boot up.
Let's root the phone, there is a couple of ways. First if you are running NC5 4.4.2 you can download Towel Root directly to the device here is the link http://towelroot.org/ The second way if you are running any version of KitKKat is to use odin to flash the cf-autoroot .tar, just download cf-autoroot here is the link http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/ to your PC desktop and follow the same instructions listed above just use the root file in place of the rom .tar file. Remember to choose the right root file for the version of KitKat you running so you don't trip KNOX !!!
Recoveries, the two popular ones are TWRP and Philz CWM. INSTALLING A RECOVERY WILL TRIP KNOX WARRANTY!!! You need a recovery to flash roms so you need to make choice at this point ? I run a stock rooted 4.4.2 NC5 with Philz custom recovery version 6.12.9 hltespr https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/hltespr/ . The device was rooted and warranty tripped the second day I owned it. I was in a Sprint corporate Store a couple of wks ago. Showed the tech my rooted note 3. He said I can't touch that, I said what if I unrooted the phone. He said no problem, now I can warranty the phone. He didn't care that the KNOX flag was tripped at all 0x1. Just can't be rooted when you bring it in for service. Sprint doesn't care about KNOX only Samsung cares about KNOX. What is KNOX, KNOX is a program that creates secure encrypted containerization of DATA so it can be sent to another location. So, when Samsung paid millions to the NSA to design the KNOX security containerization system, which apparently they won't warranty will work after the device is rooted, than maybe they care. Can you say track and spy on me !!!
Ok lets install a recovery !!!

3. completely power down your device, and boot into download mode (press and hold the power button, volume down button, and the home button at the same time) a new screen will popup then push the volume up button to get into download mode.
4. click on the Odin zip file and extract to desktop, right click and run as administrator
5. with your device in download mode connect it to your pc via usb cable, COM: will light up in the upper left hand corner of Odin doesn't matter what color or number just shows a connection has been made.
6. click PDA box in odin, a box will popup click where ever you have recovery file downloaded, once open it will show up in box next to PDA
7. click start wait till you see pass and success , then your custom recovery is installed.
After the recovery is installed, download a copy of SuperSu to your desktop here is the link http://download.chainfire.eu/641/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.40.zip to version v2.40 and for SuperSU 2.46 go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053 . Then copy and paste to sd card via USB cable. Now the next thing you are going to do is completely power down the device and boot into recovery. (press and hold the power button, volume up button, and home button at he same time) a menu will come up, click on Install Zip, then sd card to install zip and root device. Boot device and verify it is rooted, then power down, and boot into recovery. Click on backup, MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR ROOTED ROM !!! Then make a backup of EFS file by its self it will show up in your backup file on the sd card or ext sd card depending on where you choose to put it. Copy and paste the efs file someplace safe.
With the Google Play Store download some type of root file manager like ES File Manager or Root Explorer (what I use). Then you can remove/freeze/delete some of the bloatware on your stock rooted rom. Check out this thread on Bloatware removal http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2770729
OK lets flash a rom !!!
First, you CANNOT flash a rom that is based on an older version of rom you are currently running. EX: If you are on KK 4.4.2 NC5 you can flash a rom based on NAB or NC5 but you CANNOT use a rom based on mj4 or older read the OP thread carefully . You can run AOSP roms as long as they are based on 4.4+. If you are running a KK 4.4.4 based rom, you will need to odin flash a stock lollipop 5.1.1 OS. Then root the lollipop 5.1.1 OS, install a lollipop compatible recovery. Now you can flash a lollipop based rom.
1. install the new rom zip you want to flash on your sd card via usb cable from PC or download directly to device
2. power down phone completely and boot into recovery
3. from the menu find and wipe cache, delvik cache, and wipe system to install new rom, NOT FACTORY RESET !!!
4. go back to menu and click on install zip then click on where you have the zip ( i.e. sd card ) and install this will take a minute or two
5. back to main menu and reboot device this will take several minutes on the first boot of a new rom
6. enjoy your new rom !!!
Lets do a restore from a backup recovery file !!!
1. completely power down device and boot into recovery
2. go to main menu and click on wipe system to install new rom ( no need to mess with the caches on a restore )
3. back to the menu click on back up and restore, then click on the backup file location ( i.e. sd card )
4. now click on restore
5. when its completed reboot device this will install your original rooted stock rom you made a backup for
Eventually you will figure out that you can make several backups and they have really weird numbered time stamps to identify them.

I have a Note 3 locked to Sprint which announce "Invalid SIM card" everytime I get the sim in and of course it doesn't have network. So I have a question 4u that after flashing this ROM am I possible to use the SIM (I'm from VN) ?

No, it's my understanding the device has to be unlocked by sprint. There is an access code to do that, I have seen it just can't remember where. I will do a little searching.

I guess if people are still confused, there are a lot of youtube videos that have walk-throughs as to how to root, install recovery, and flash a ROM. Maybe some people might be visual learners?

You can't and you shouldn't . Flashing nc5 might brick your phone that's why we all believe one should always wait for a few weeks before jumping on a new ota as downgrade is not possible

First, if your device came with 4.4.4 NH7 it should be possible to down grade to 4.4.2 NC5. However, is the phone new and under warranty ? If so odin flashing back to NC5 won't trip the knox e-fuse, that happens when you install a custom recovery. Here we go, first BACK UP ALL YOUR DATA TO AN EXT SD CARD OR PC !!! ( i.e. pics, music, videos etc.) From my post here is the link for odin https://mega.co.nz/#!oA5xzTAL!LXoVWBVDWN_7SULGPIv6nWx1gCI3ZZlOMSWdRGVX6Uo download to PC desktop. Then go to micmars and download a copy of NC5 here is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2712205. It is a zip file so just right click and extract it to your desktop, that will change to a .tar file in a folder. Next extract the odin zip to your PC desktop, and open the odin file as administrator. Now connect your device to your PC via a USB cable. A box will light up in the upper left hand corner COM: doesn't matter what color it is just shows a connection. Now click on the PDA box a new window will open up click on desktop then click on the NC5.tar file to open. Then the file show up next to the PDA box don't touch anything else just click start. Sit back go get a coffee it is going to take few minutes.
Now here is the fun part, if your phone boots up GREAT !!! If it doesn't, and bootloops no problem this common when going back to NC5 it happened to me. Just pull the battery, then reinsert battery, and boot into your stock recovery ( hold the power button, volume up button, and menu button at he same time) once there navigate to factory reset with the volume button and click on factory reset with power button. Finally the phone should boot into NC5, now go to settings/general/about phone and see what version you have.
If you are still on NH7 no problem, it didn't stick go through the process again. Others have had the same thing happen to them, and it took the second time, in the end it's worth it.
I had all kinds of problems on NH7 and so have many others, I went back to NC5 and have had no problems, I'm going to stay here and wait till android 5.0 (lollipop) comes out. Enjoy !!!

I took root off a Note 3 (sm-n900p) by upgrading to the new firmware (NK4). It was having issues and he wanted to go back to a stock. Now he needs root again and chainfire doesn't list a file for the NK4.
Chainfire says he needs a image file from the update to add to his list, but I do not have it. He also states that in most cases, root will work on the new firmware. But if does not, that's where things go black, what to expect and how to recover?
And from what I read, I can't go back to an early firmware?
Your help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

First you have a S5 not a note 3 but other than size they are basically the same. Read the post above yours, the same thing will probably happen to you don't panic !!! I have to go to work will be back tonite if you want to wait so I can help as you do it or you can try it yourself even you loop it (like what happened to me and most people ) don't panic just follow the instructions in post # 14. You need a clean copy of NE5 go here enter SM-G900P in search on right, you will have to register but its free , I don't see a XDA site for stock NE5 so here is the link http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ enjoy !!!

Sorry about that, I'm no spring chicken either. I'm sure you know what phone you have, I only based my statement on the firmware name (NK4). If you want try in the future I would glad to try and help !!! You will find as I have that here on XDA there is always someone to lend a hand !!!

Yeah, I kind of figured that, plus the the model number is one letter different too. I would only try it if you are sure I won't lock up his phone using CF Auto root. I've been at this since the 27th, even throw money at chainfire, although I doubted that would do anything. I needed to donate anyway to show some support for his work.
My other question, can I put it back to the firmware he was on? It's was 4.4.4 (NH7). Then I could root his phone if I can't do it as you said in post #14.

No guarantee it won't bootloop !!! I did on my note 3, you just have to take a step back and keep going. Let me give you an overview, but then you need to follow the individual steps in my first post for each part you need to do.
Ok, the first thing you are going to do is BACK UP ALL THE DATA ON THE DEVICE !!! I.E. music, pics, and videos. These are found on the internal sd card copy and paste them on the desktop of your PC.
Now download Odin to your desktop and extract it. (get the link in 1st post) Download a fresh copy of NH7 4.4.4 to your desktop (get the link in 1st post) and extract it. Now follow the instructions in the first post to flash a stock rom. Let it boot up, if it bootloops take off the back and pull the battery. Let it sit for two minutes, replace the battery and hold the power button, volume up button, and the menu button at the same time. It should boot into a stock recovery, if it DOES use the volume button to navigate to factory reset and push the power button. Let device reboot this will take a couple of minutes. Now go to settings/general/about device and see what version of KK you are running.
If it DOES NOT boot into a stock recovery, and goes back to your custom recovery or bootloops. No problem, pull the battery let it set for a couple of minutes reinstall battery then hold the power button, volume down button, and menu button at the same time and boot into download mode. Go to the first post and flash the rom again it will stick the second time.
Once you are back to bone stock 4.4.4 NH7 just follow the first post for rooting and recoveries. I know this is your friend's device and you don't want to mess it up. So before you try anything check here http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/ go to SM-G900P NK4 and try the CF-auto root for the s5. The s5 and note 3 are pretty much the same. You can try to flash the root through odin the worst that can happen is it will fail and not install. Then you are back to try and going back to 4.4.4 NH7.

Hey, friends and developing friends. If you don't know me, and I'm fairly sure you don't, my name is Sadcamp. I've been a lurker who has benefited from the XDA forums for a long time. I've had 3 devices, HTC One S, LG P769, and LG D415. Currently using the two LG phones I have. That doesn't matter, though. Since I benefited from modding my phones so much that they've become very effective in all aspects; I decided I would like to give back during this wonderful holiday season. This is a compilation of all the tools and guides I've used to make my LG L9 P769BK an effective phone. This guide WILL NOT INCLUDE an unlocked boot-loader. I haven't seemed to find that, but I have found pretty much everything else.
Disclaimer: As always, I'm not responsible for what YOU DO TO YOUR OWN DEVICE. Use this guide at your own risk. It might work for me, but there is always that small chance that it might not work for you. Doubt it's there, but nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition.

PART 1.
CHAPTER 1. IF YOU GOT THIS NEW PHONE FROM A STORE OR WHATEVER, IF IT'S BRAND NEW AND YOU'RE READY TO START MODDING IT, SKIP RIGHT OVER TO PART TWO.
CHAPTER 2. MY DEVICE IS WIPED AND HAS NO ROM ON IT. I WANT TO INSTALL THE STOCK ROM.
Well then, let's begin. We're gonna have lots of fun.
Step 1. Acquiring the software needed to flash the Stock Rom.
I will include a download link to a software called "LG Flash Tool 2014". The software is very minimal and has a success rate of 100%. If not, try again. If it just doesn't work for you, go dig for a guide that you think may work for you, because I did and it took me forever to get this up.
Step 2. Acquiring the Stock Rom.
Here's the DL to the Stock Rom.
Step 3. Putting your phone into S/W mode.
Have a micro-USB, your phone, and your computer handy with you.
First, hold ONLY the volume up button on the phone, then plug in the Micro USB. Continue holding the volume up button until the S/W Upgrade screen shows. Then you can let go.
After this step, There's no point in touching your phone for the rest of this chapter.
Step 4. Using the software.
Watch this video.
Step 5. After using the software.
After the software has done it's magic, it should have booted up just like it would have straight out of the box. Literally. You're now good to go to part 2.
Chapter 3. MY DEVICE IS BRICKED AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO OMG IS IT USELESS ASDFHARGA.
Trust me, do not worry. I use to think the same thing, and I left my device untouched for months because I thought it was un-recoverable. This probably occurred because this specific device has a locked boot-loader and a very complicated algorithm that prevents us from flashing custom recoveries like normal people do. So, you probably have "Security Error" when you boot your phone up. No biggie. That just means that something attempted to compromise the boot-loader and it worked, but the modified code breaks the boot so it doesn't start up.
TL;DR, Simple boot problem. You will still have ALL the data you had before attempting to flash something on this device.
Step 0.5. Acquiring Stock ROM and LG Flashing Software. (.zips)
Step 1. Put the phone into S/W Mode.
Have a micro-USB, your phone, and your computer handy with you.
First, hold ONLY the volume up button on the phone, then plug in the Micro USB. Continue holding the volume up button until the S/W Upgrade screen shows. Then you can let go.
After this step, There's no point in touching your phone for the rest of this chapter.
Step 2. Using the software.

Step 3. Finished.
The phone should boot up just as normal. Here's the condition. Your root is gone, your custom recovery is gone, all your SystemUI mods are gone, pretty much everything you did with Root is gone. All the Root apps and everything is still there, you just need to get Root again and go through the long process of re-modding your entire system.
TL;DR. Your Root, Recovery, and mods are gone. All your Apps, Data, etc. are still there, but all the preloaded software is back, and ready to be deleted again. Just after you root your phone, again.

Part 2. Loading up your system with some of (my picks) the best apps. By the time you read this, most of these apps will probably be outdated, but these are just if you don't have the time and patience to get all the apps from the Play Store and want to do it here and now.

The Root Browser
LGPwn.apk (to root your system)
L9RecoveryInstaller (to install a recovery without having to soft-brick your phone)
Supersu.apk (for the binaries and stoofs)
BusyBox (because you need it in order to do half, if not, most of the things you do with root.)
After you unpacked, copied all these apps onto your newly-flashed phone, and have installed them all, continue on to PARTE DE TRES.

This is by far one of the most important sections in this guide, because if you screw up here, who knows what might happen to your device because you accidentally forgot to install something or un-check a small box you didn't notice. Aside from that, let's get the hell to it.
Chapter 1: Rooting.
So, I assume you have installed LGPwn.apk. Well, open that app. It will open a dialog box, you don't need to read any of that because I will describe everything in detail here.
Step 1. Open LGPwn and hit RootMe.
(It opens the Backup app.)
Step 2. Click RESTORE, then select INTERNAL STORAGE.
Step 3. Click Lgpwn, and start the restore.
What it does is basically gets a system snapshot and just inserts the root into the system of the backup file. When the restore completes, it should automatically reboot the phone. You can check now, it probably has root. If it doesn't, try again.
Go to Chapter 2 of Part 3.
Chapter 2. SU/SuperSU.
You basically need this app in order to manage who has all these superuser permissions and at what elevated permissions they can use it. Plus the hell loads of other options the app has been optimized for our pleasure.
Step 1. Install SuperSU.
Self Explanatory.
Step 2. Open it and update the binary. Please, for the love of god, update it using the Normal Install. It will take only a few seconds, and bam, you have it all updated and ready to go. See additional options in Settings.
Go to Chapter 3 of Part 3.
Chapter 3. Busybox.
This badassery contains, basically, a bunch of commands that helps optimize what you can use in your system. It over-all just optimizes your system to be more compatible with the hundreds of apps that require BusyBox. It's very worth it. Plus, we're going to need this in order to get our CWM Recovery on.
Step 1. Install Busybox.
Don't even need to comment here. Too late for that though.
Step 2. Open it up, and grant it SuperUser permission using the awesome app we just installed to organize those permissions.
Step 3. Simply press Install at the bottom left and do nothing more until it has successfully installed. If it failed, close the app and restart it. Try again. If it continues to fail, make sure you granted it superuser permission and all. When it's done, well, you're ready for the world of modding ahead of you.
Go to Part 4.

Part 4. CWM Custom Recovery. Probably not the most up-to-date CWM Recovery, but sufficient enough for your basic wiping and .zip installing needs. I have not tested other ROM installation through it, so I will not teach that here, since it may be unstable because of the locked boot-loader. You do that at your own risk. If you soft brick it or wipe your device and cant get it to work, Go to Part 1.
Step 1. Ensure that you have Root, SuperSU, and Busybox all installed and all their utilities (as mentioned in part 3) ready to go.
Step 2. Install L9 Recovery Installer and open it up.
Step 3. On default, it should say that it is not installed. Please, please, make sure you have the busybox utilities installed or THIS WILL NOT WORK. If you do, proceed and Install/Update the recovery.
Step 4. Hit CWM ICS/JB (stable), then Yes, Install recovery.
Step 5. Grant it SuperUser Permissions. In a matter of seconds, it should be finished. It will then say "Status Installed."
Info: When you boot up your phone, the bottom buttons will blink for a small period of time. That period of time is the time you have to boot into Recovery, by holding down the Lower Volume button whilst they are blinking.
Ensure that recovery is installed.
Then, move on to Part 5, almost there guys!

Part 5. Xposed Framework.
The Xposed Framework is an app, just like busybox, that uses utilities and commands to optimize customization, speed, and well, you know, Android stuffs. It contains hundreds of user-made applications that use the framework to, as mentioned, customize the shell and all.
Lets dig in.
Chapter 1: Installing Framework
Step 1. Download and Install the Xposed Framework app from repo.xposed.info
Step 2. Click on the Framework button in the app. Read the warning dialog box carefully.
Step 3. Install/Update the framework. Grant it Superuser permissions, and it should install them in a matter of seconds. You will be prompted to reboot, help yourself and do so.
Go to Chapter 2.
Chapter 2: Installing Mods.
Go ahead and do whatever you want with the mods. Just know that once you give them superuser permission and activate them through Xposed, unless you ask them to prompt SU permissions every time they try to make a change, they will have complete utter control to make any change they want without you knowing. For the most part, that shouldn't happen, so happy modding. Just warning you guys incase.
Chapter 3: Activating Mods.
The app will prompt you to activate and reboot the mods you install. If you don't do this, they won't work. Just saying.

I have noticed that many have been willing to take the NK1 4.4.4 update and give up root access. Therefore I am putting this out there for those that have not done so but are considering doing so if they are able to keep root.
The following process will allow you to update to NK1 4.4.4 and keep root. However once updated to NK1 you will not be able to downgrade back to 4.4.2. If you screw something up after updating, e.g. while performing a mod, and have to flash back to stock you will permanently lose root access (unless an exploit is found in the future)! With that said I believe all of you are capable of making your own decision as to whether or not to proceed at your own risk!
**You can begin the following process from any Build/ROM but you must already have Root Access**
**Required** FlashFire - Play BETA - PREVIEW
1. Join the G+ community using the same Google account as you're using for Play on your phone/tablet Here.
2. Sign up to receive the BETA versions from Play Here.
- Use the link provided after sign-up to download the app.
Instructions:
1. Extract the N900V_NK1_Stock_Rooted_Firmware from the .rar and place it and the N900V_NK1_Stock_Partitions onto your device (use either internal or ext-sdcard).
2. Open the FlashFire app and "Agree" to the Terms and Conditions.
3. Press "(+)" twice to bring up the "Actions" menu.
4. Press "Flash firmware package" then locate and select the N900V_NK1_Stock_Rooted_Firmware. FlashFire will scan the firmware which may take several minutes to complete. Press "ok" once the md5 is confirmed then make certain that both "Boot" and "System" are selected. Press the checkmark to continue.
5. Press "(+)" again then press "Flash Zip or OTA" and locate and select the N900V_NK1_Stock_Partitions. Leave "Auto-mount" unchecked under the "Options" menu and press the checkmark to continue.
6. Press “(+)” once again to bring up “Actions” and select “Wipe.”
7. Under the “Options” menu select all partitions except “Internal storage” then press the checkmark to continue.
8. From the main menu Tap-hold-drag your "Actions" and place them in the following order:
- "Wipe"
- "Flash firmware package"
- "Flash ZIP or OTA"
(leave default settings under "EverRoot" and "Reboot" options)
9. Last, press the lightning bolt then "Ok" to begin the flash .
The screen will turn black then display the contents of your system before beginning the flashes. Once complete your device will reboot and pause on the Verizon splash screen for two to three minutes before completely rebooting. Done!
Tip: for blazing fast speed turn off animations from Developer Options and reboot!

If you are talking about downgrading you are right and someone else already confirmed that you cannot downgrade the kernel to NC4 after updating to 4.4.4. This thread is for those that have not yet updated to 4.4.4.
The VPN data disconnects would be enough to throw $20 to make sure this works. Can tell you how annoying that is when working from my phone.

Putting a stock ROM together is rather straightforward so I'm pretty certain it works. And it's been downloaded 65 times so I suspect people are using it but for some reason choose to remain anonymous which is fine. But it would be nice to hear from someone that has tried it. Also, no donations are required but thank you nonetheless.
My safestrap (Safestrap-HLTEVZW-NC2-3.75-B04.apk) does not permit me to backup or restore anything. Can I perform the upgrade with wiping my user data?

Sounds like there is a problem with your current installation of safestrap. Since safestrap is critical to this process I recommend that you reinstall safestrap or even consider reflashing NC4 and safestrap before proceeding.

1. Did a full backup in Safestrap
2. Erased everything
3. Flashed N900V_NK1_100% rom
4. Restored just the /Data from backup
5. ODIN rebooted into download mode, ap > N900V_NK1_Stock_Kernel
5. Took 5 mins to come up, upgraded apps, had to close the setup wizard
6. System > 4.4.4 and Root status is still working!

Be careful deleting apps which may cause stability issues due to dependencies. I recommend freezing apps instead.

BACKGROUND: OK this question gets asked every day, by members of varying skill levels, so this is intended to be a one stop guide on how to root, no matter what firmware version you're running. Yes this will trip Knox, no that will have no effect on your phone whatsoever, and there are ways to reset the Knox counter. If worst comes to worst and you need to bring your phone in for warranty and they give you any sort of lip for the Knox counter, tell them Kies broke your phone and they da** well better fix it (worked for me with multiple Samsung devices).
That said, this will root the SM-G900T (T-Mobile Galaxy S5) no matter what version of android you're running. Make sure you read this entire post and understand everything before trying anything.
PREPARATION: Disclaimer out of the way, now for the fun stuff. First, preparation, you need to download the following files to your PC: Odin 3.11.1 (this is Odin, it flashes stuff to Samsung android phones); twrp-3.0.2-2-klte.img.tar (this is the custom recovery we're going to use). Extract the Odin zip file to your PC's Desktop. Download the file named UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.79-20161211114519.zip somewhere to your phone's internal storage or external SD, doesn't really matter which. Now in your phone's settings, go to About device, scroll down to Build number. Repeatedly tap Build number until your phone tells you Developer options have been turned on. Go back and enter developer options, enable USB debugging and hit OK. At this point you'll want to connect your phone to your PC with USB, just to make sure it actually connects (it should). If not, you can download the USB drivers from here (scroll down to Downloads section), but most likely this won't be necessary. OK prep work done, now we get to actually get started on rooting our phone. Make sure your phone has at least 50% battery, this is always a smart safety step.
STEPS:
Power off the phone. Boot into download mode (hold vol-, home, and power all at once in that order), then hit vol+ to continue
Run Odin (double click the Odin3 v3.11.1.exe file). Click the Options tab, disable the "Auto-Reboot" option and double check that "Re-Partition" option is disabled (it should be by default), this is critical to success
Connect phone via USB. Hit AP button in Odin, select the twrp-3.0.2-2-klte.img.tar
Flash (click start). When it's done, the progress bar will be full and Odin should say "PASS!"
Hold vol+, home, and power (all at once, in that order) to boot into recovery. THIS MUST BE DONE BEFORE REBOOTING NORMALLY!. TWRP might ask if you want to let it modify your system or keep it read only. I would highly recommend you let it modify your system, you might be OK keeping it read only, but I cannot guarantee that. You will be fine letting it modify your system, that I can guarantee.
Hit the install option and navigate to the SuperSU zip file that is saved to your tablet. Select it and swipe to install.
Reboot system (normal reboot). If TWRP should ask you, do not let it install supersu the way it wants to (do not swipe to install, just reboot).
When android is booted, run the superSU app and go into settings, disable the Mount namespace separation option, and reboot immediately.
Please note the first boot might take a while. If after 10 minutes or so the phone has not rebooted, you should boot back into TWRP, install the supersu zip file again, and this time wipe cache and dalvik before rebooting. Otherwise the cache and dalvik wipe is not necessary. I will eventually post pictures to demonstrate all the steps in the 2nd post, and hopefully FAQs or whatever in the third post.

Once you're rooted, you can use certain apps you would be unable to use not rooted. A few I would definitely recommend checking out: AdAway (an adblocker), Viper4Android (significantly, noticeably improve your audio quality by tweaking the settings in this app), Titanium Backup (not only backup and restore app settings, but freeze/uninstall unwanted system apps, aka bloatware), and a root-enabled file explorer such as Root Browser or ES File Explorer (with the root option enabled) is recommended. If you plan to install Viper4Android, before doing so please first flash this file in TWRP and then reboot, edit the following lines in the file /system/build.prop, and reboot again once the edits are made:

Where can I find custom ROMs for this phone?
Touchwiz (Samsung's version of Android similar to the one that comes stock with the phone) based ROMs can be found in the T-Mobile Galaxy S5 Android Development Section. AOSP (Google's original version of Android) based ROMs, such as CyanogenMod, AOKP, Mokee, Bliss, AICP, Resurrection-Remix, etc. can be found in the S5 Unified Development Section. I must warn you i can give a lot more information on the aosp based ROMs since that is my personal preference in overall Android experience, as a result my knowledge of touchwiz based development is much shakier. To each their own, and we ought to cherish android's ability to give us such a powerful freedom of choice and fight for this continued ability for our control of our personal devices against current trends of locking everything down too tight to allow for true development based innovation. Remember, when getting ROMs from this section, this phone's development name is klte (as opposed to kltevzw, kltespr, klteusc, etc.)

I'm pretty sure it'll cause a bootloop, I would recommend against doing the swipe to install when twrp asks you to, saying supersu isn't installed (it is when you install the zip, twrp just can't detect it). The reason for this is something in the kernel called selinux (long story, Google it if you want the full blown details) but the short version is starting with android 5.1.1 older versions of supersu (ie the one twrp wants to install for you automatically) usually cause a bootloop. The supersu zip file I link to in my post is specifically designed to avoid this issue. Thanks for reminding me, I wanted to put this question in the FAQ section. It's an important issue and something anyone who wants to know a little more about android should be aware of

Thank you for your quick and helpful response. So if my phone is booting now, with supersu installed, does that mean I am good to go?
Bootloop may be what happened. After awhile, I pulled the battery, booted back into TWRP and reinstalled the supersu zip file. I did not wipe cache or dalvik but I also did not swipe to install supersu. My phone now boots and acts fine other than showing "Set Warranty Bit : kernel", but I think that is expected, correct?

The Set Warranty Bit: kernel thing is normal, that's just your phone telling you it's rooted (I mean it's technically telling you the kernel has been modified, in this case only just to allow for supersu to be installed). As long as you're booting fine, that's what's important. Thanks for the feedback, and I hope I've been helpful

FYI, I don't know of any Custom ROMs that are not already rooted. Rooting is only needed for Stock ROMs.

Trying with FOL, downloaded via the link provided here. After installing TWRP, i have to remove the battery to get the phone to turn off. It still acts as if it were being updated, and the power button does not work. Taking out the battery, putting it back in, and pressing vol up, home, power brings up twrp.

Knox is Samsung's indicator if your phone has ever had a non-stock kernel installed. Currently there are very few pieces of software - Samsung only - that check this flag. One may be Samsung Pay. However, it doesn't cause any other problems with any other parts of Android. And, doesn't keep you from turning your phone back it, etc.
KIES is the software that Samsung supplies to flash updates, make backups, etc.

Heads Up
You may notice that the BL version of this release is different than the system rom part.
The rom version is in fact BQL1, but the BL is a new version of AQK2. The reason for this is because
the latest combination, ARA1, has a number of sensors not working. I figured out a fix but it requires splicing
stuff in from other versions, and it didnt feel like the battery lasted as well. I am still testing though and
the next release if its ready will come with ARA1. This is not the same BL as the previous
release though, so if you upgrade also flash this new BL!

If there are things you like about V4A you can use both at the same time.
ITYBP Modded YouTube
A last minute addition, this is a really nice youtube mod brought to you by @laura almeida, @Razerman and @ZaneZam. It features some cool additions like native adblocking (no more xposed module), overriding your max youtube resolution (you can watch 4k videos on your phone, but not 4k hdr). I have been using it for a while and really like it. A big thanks to them for letting me include it with PCR
Improved Debloating
Found better stuff to delete. Added back some stuff I took out before that some of you asked for.
If you find something missing that you want back, pull it from the stock rom and install it in /system/app or /system/priv-app, wherever you got it from.
Improved Battery Life
Thanks to some battery sleuthing by @TheMadScientist, this release comes with a nice big bump in efficiency. With just some very minor tuning using amplify and a service disabler, I can get around 1%/h drain.
Performance Improvements
That increased battery life does not come at the cost of performance. In fact performance is better too. Part of that is due some personally tested build.prop tweaks. Another part is some data optimisation scripts that now run at boot. You wont notice those, but they are there doing their thing.

Warnings/Disclaimers/Known Issues
- 80% Battery life like every other rooted US snapdragon device
- Flashing on a USB 3.0 port will likely cause corruption in your flash that can cause kernel panics, loss of root, and occasionally very strange other errors. If you get something like this, its not the rom its a hardware conflict that can only show up with larger images like are used in SamFail flashing. See the section below on Kernel Panics for more.
- If there is an app or apk from the stock rom that you wish you had installed, the best solution is to extract it from your stock rom image and copy it to the same place in /system using a root file manager.
SamFail Rooting Process
and Rom Installation
WARNING: THE FOLLOWING WILL ERASE YOUR WHOLE PHONE
If you have a SDCard, remove it from your device. Occasional firmware incidents have wiped SDCards in the past. It has neer happened to me, but I have a backup of my sdcard so I can be a little more risky. Better safe than sorry.
Prepare the Following:
- complete stock rom at your bootloader rev in case things dont work
- Everything backed up
- Both Prince Comsy Odin, and Regular Odin for flashing stock
- A USB 2.0 Port. If you attempt to flash with a USB 3.0 port it may work, but if you get kernel panics, or unexpected bad behavior and/or crashes your usb3 is absolutely to blame. some people get lucky and suceed after a few tries, YMMV. If you can not acquire a machine with a usb2.0 port, get a usb2.0 hub and run your phone into that & that into your machine. Reports are that has made things work for some, but we get few reports back.
What is my Bootloader Revision?
Your bootloader revision is part of the baseband build number of the firmware you are currently running. Lets use this rom as our example. The full build number is as follows: G950USQS2BQL1
Start from the right and count 5 characters back. See that 2? That is the bootloader revision for the firmware that came with this rom. But we are not flashing the BQL1 firmware (or Baseband), We are using an older version because it works better. The version we are flashing is: G950UEU2AQK2. Can you tell which revision it is?
Is my Phone Compatible?
Is it a G950U? Is it a G950W? If you answered "yes" to one of those questions, then the answer is "yes". That being said, flashing this rom if you are on bootloader revision 1 will upgrade your bootloader revision to 2, which means that any previous rom you were running wont work, so be prepared by having a copy of stock for bootloader version 2. If you don't want to move to version 2, you can still run the latest PartCyborgRom though, just use the G950UEU1AQk1 BL_ tar under Old Downloads in place of the one that came with this one. It will work just fine. However if you are unsure I suggest you go ahead and upgrade, there are not really any benefits to staying on 1 at this point.
Steps to Root
1) Download and unzip AP Part 1 and BL Part 2 zip files.
2) Download and unzip Prince Comsey Odin and start it up
3) Reboot device into Download mode and connect it to your pc
4) Open Comsy Odin and only add the AP Part1.tar.md5 file. Select only the following options:
- "Auto-Reboot"
- "F-Reset Time"
- "Nand Erase All"
NOTE: Odin will freeze while checking the AP tar.md5 hash.
Be patient, it will come back. If your computer is old this will take even longer.
5) Click "Start" and wait for the system.img.ext4 file to flash fully to your device. This will take a while too.
ATTENTION
When the flash finishes, this is when the SamFail magic happens. Instead of saying "Failed (Auth)" like it should, the device will crash into upload mode with "Unknow Error".
If your device does not do this, and just says "Failed (Auth)" or something similar and stays in download mode, you need to start again from the beginning, but using a different set of usb ports as you have suffered from the usb3 corruption.
When you see the upload mode page, do the 3 button salute to reboot into download mode again.
WARNING: When you reboot from upload mode, it wont look like download mode. You will see an error.
When you reboot back into download mode, your screen will say that you had a failed update and you need to do emergency repair or take your device to a service center.
Rest assured, your phone is actually in download mode, and Odin will have recognized it and said "Added!" along with the com port lighting up underneath the progress bar. Just continue the process. It is safe to do so and that error will go away after the next step.
6) Close and re-open Comsy Odin or hit the reset button, and add BL_PartCyborgRom-BootLoopEdition-<version>.tar.md5 to the BL section.
7) Leave the default checkboxes for "F Reset Time" and "Auto Reboot" checked. Uncheck "Nand erase all". Click "Start" and flash the BL (part 2) to your device.
Note: If you forgot to uncheck nand erase all, don't worry. You are just wasting time doing something again that you already did, the outcome is the same. "All" in "Nand Erase All" means "all userdata", which means cache and, well, userdata. Nothing else is deleted.
8) Wait for the flash to finish . It won't take very long at all as the files are small.
9) When it has finished, Odin will say PASS and your device will reboot into recovery.
From this point forther the scary download error message will be gone for good (or until next flash). Don't go looking yet though, you have more work to do to get root.
Warning: Failure to follow this step could lead to a corrupted instance with no cell coverrage
10) When in recovery issue a factory reset. This ensures that your device has a userdata and cache partitions that are valid, and that the csc is processed correctly. Failure to do the reset could cause issues with either.
11) Boot the device as normal. Wait for it to come up. Its deodexed so it will take longer than even your average odexed rom.
All done!
FlashFire Instructions
- Get the ROM on your phone and unzip it
- Open up FlashFire
- Add a Wipe task, select the top 3 items only
- Select Flash Firmware and load up the AP_PartCyborgRom-BootLoopEdition-<version>.Part1.tar.md5 file to flash your new system
- Select Reboot to Recovery
- Make sure "Inject Root" is NOT checked
- Press go. Wait for the rom to flash and your device to reboot into recovery
- From recovery do a factory reset
- Then select reboot to Download Mode
- When device reboots into Download mode, flash BL_PartCyborgRom-BootLoopEdition-<version>.Part2.tar.md5
You have to use odin for the BL file because flashing bootloaders in FlashFire is a bad idea.
Dirty Flashers
Yes, you can dirty flash this rom to upgrade, however it is problematic and can cause issues. I did it for a long time, but my install was a mess by the time I gave up and reset.
To dirty flash, follow your preferred method of flashing above, but skip the Wipe step.
Odin
Skip "Nand Erase All" during the Part 1 flash. Do everything else the same
FlashFire
For the first Wipe task, instead of selecting the top 3, select only Dalvik like the second wipe task.
NOTE: This procedure is ONLY for people upgrading from an earlier PartCyborgRom version. If you are coming from stock you can not dirty flash because you userdata is encrypted which is not supported by the Factory firmware. If you are coming from other rom, or stock, I have no idea man but don't look at me if it blows up.
ANOTHER NOTE: This method of flashing is unsupported! If you do this and you have issues, you are on your own. If you think they are the rom, then back up your entire rom, wipe and reproduce them.
Help! I Got a Boot loop!
If you get a boot loop or your device hangs at boot, try the following:
1) Reboot to recovery and factory reset again.
To get to recovery hold power+vol-down until screen goes black, then wait till upload mode (press power key for 7+ secs) comes up. Then press vol-down+power again and hold it till it reboots and as SOON as the screen goes black switch to holding vol-up+power+bixby. Hold it for 5-7sec then let go and you will wind up in recovery mode. If this doesnt help, or you can't get to recovery because you cant press the buttons right, proceed to the next step.
2) Try flashing just Part 2 (the BL) again. not only will this get you back in recovery, it will also format your cache again. Its worth a shot and doesnt take long.
Kernel Panic, Invalid Argument
Start Over
Go back to the beginning and do everything again. If it fails again, even in a slightly different way this time, bad interaction between the s8 and your USB port/controller/cable/etc are causing the image to be corrupted as its being written to disk. Try the following:
1) New USB Ports. If you have them, use a different set of usb ports (not the one next to it, but one further away). Its possible that that will be your "good" port, and that will be enough. Lots of machines also have some USB3 ports and some USB2.
2) New Cable. Its less likely, but maybe a new cable will help. Do the whole thing over with a new cable.
3) Try a few times. It sounds silly, but people who have had this issue have reported that eventually it just works. Try a few times until you get sick of trying. If you try like 10 times it probably wont work on the 11th though.
I Dont Have Another USB Port!
Try to borrow your partner/spouse/roommate/friends computer for a quick flash. Ask about the USB ports though, because another 3.0 port may not help you.
If you can't get someones computer, you can purchase a USB2.0 Hub online or at your friendly neighborhood electronics store. They arent very expensive, and I have heard positive reports from people saying it did the trick.

Flashed fine through flashfire(AP only) was a bit worried because after I flashed the bootloader I got a kernel panic upload mode, but I reflashed the bootloader and it worked out fine. Running it for a few hours now and I noticed right away the difference in battery drain, as in, amazing job at extending the battery life. Thanks for your work, look forward to Future updates :good:

Followed everything and when it went to go reboot the SAMSUNG GALAXY S8 logo popped with the little custom lock but its almost as if its just there like its not really rebooting just a screenshot of it it wont go away after a certain time period or anything,I also tried re-flashing the BL and it still didn't boot up as it should of. Any idea on what I should do?
I will test this with my unlocked g950u1 on tmobile

Same here.
I tried the first method (fully stock) and it failed badly to where download mode did not work, had to use Smart Switch emergency recovery
First attempt without flashing CSC on TMo resulted in Kernel Panic after reboot from Download mode. I ended up flashing the CSC and now the Tmobile boot splash is showing up and seems to be working, will update to confirm in a few minutes.
Update: booted just fine now into Setup Wizard...
Will someone upload the files elsewhere? I cannot download it tells me that the OP has reached daily traffic limit on website

So... I just got an S8 from Boost Mobile after my LG Optimus f7 started FINALLY failing. Had it rooted and cwm thanks to the genius and hard work of devs like GameTheory and PlayfulGod!
1. Should it be safe to use this method and flash this particular ROM?
2. Do I need to do anything special because it's Boost n not vzw?
3. It was mentioned that in spite of 80% battery issue, battery life is extremely well optimised. Anyone else with S8 on Boost try this? Worth it to take the plunge?
Don't care about Knox, Safety Net, etc. I don't use my device for transactions via Samsung/Android Pay, nor Gaming. Wondering if this will nix Playstore purchases via credit card on file? NOT a deal beaker by any means. Just curious.
I desperately miss having root and custom recovery. siiiiiigggghhhh...

This is about all we have as far as ROMs go. We don't have a custom recovery because our bootloader is locked and it's not looking like it's going to be unlocked ever. You can flash this on any G950U phone, carrier doesn't matter.

So... I just got an S8 from Boost Mobile after my LG Optimus f7 started FINALLY failing. Had it rooted and cwm thanks to the genius and hard work of devs like GameTheory and PlayfulGod!
1. Should it be safe to use this method and flash this particular ROM?
2. Do I need to do anything special because it's Boost n not vzw?
3. It was mentioned that in spite of 80% battery issue, battery life is extremely well optimised. Anyone else with S8 on Boost try this? Worth it to take the plunge?
Don't care about Knox, Safety Net, etc. I don't use my device for transactions via Samsung/Android Pay, nor Gaming. Wondering if this will nix Playstore purchases via credit card on file? NOT a deal beaker by any means. Just curious.
I desperately miss having root and custom recovery. siiiiiigggghhhh...

This is my first $700 phone and I'll probably have her as long as I did my f7. ( as log as battery doesn't die or I can have it replaced at a repair shop when the time comes, for less than a fortune. lol)

I'm happy enough with the battery. Bonus is that you won't wear it out charging to 80% only apparently.
It's a multi CSC so you should be fine on boost. I can't test it though I only have VZW. Worst case flash the CSC but only do that if it fails to boot.

Yeah, Bootloader's a major buzzkill.
Root and decent custom ROM would be a nice consolation prize.
What's your take on the battery afterwards? I practically live on my phone and with not being able to swap batteries, a major hit to battery life is pretty much a deal breaker. BTW, thx for the quick reply!

No but you can install rooted aqi6 with it. This literally flashes /system and replaces what you have installed. I find aqi6 much improved TBH

Factory reset. Sorry I should have mentioned that in the op. I will update
