Has anyone found a portable Battery pack that we can use on the TF? I have several that I have used for my iPhone and my old iPad2 but all are only 5v. is there one out there that can charge out TF or is the keyboard dock the only way to go for extra Battery?
There are several battery packs used for notebook computers that will work listed on Amazon. Just be sure they have a 12Volt output. EverReady had as battery pack that will also work but you will need an adapter provided by them. The key is that you need an output of 12 to 15 volts to charge the TF or Keyboard. You might read Devcake's post on a DIY charger for the TF as information on the voltages required to charge the TF. There is also a post on external batteries that might help.

I have an XP8000 from Energizer, and work perfectly.

The cable you note doesn't appear to connect directly to the Transformer.

The cable it's a Female USB with 16V output. You need the Asus cable.

Could I use this one by using an adapter?
I just got an Anker Astro3 10000mAh battery pack. I plan to use it while camping this summer, mainly to charge a phone, but occasionally to charge my tablet.
It is intended to charge 5V USB devices, and has two USB ports. It also has a 12 volt port. The adapters for the 12 volt port, of course, do not work with USB or the Transformer. So I made an adapter, and I am good to go now for charging the tablet.
The battery pack charges from a 12 volt wall charger. I have also made an adapter to charge it from the 12 volts on my motorcycle. So I will be charging it from the motorcycle during the day when riding, then using it to charge my devices in the evening at the camp. I've already tried it a couple of times, and it worked well.
I tried to charge the battery pack using a solar panel, but the solar panel was far too wimpy. It was like trying to run a house air conditioner from a penlight battery. It may make you feel good to try it, but it isn't going to do much.
So far so good. This is very close to what I need.
The issues I have had to work around are:
1) I want to also charge an in helmet bluetooth intercom from the USB port. But the charge current is so low, the battery pack auto powers off, thinking nothing is plugged in. Not a big deal because I can plug in my phone at the same time. That keeps it turned on until everything is charged, then it auto shuts down.
2) When I charge the Asus Tablet, it doesn't appear to auto shut down. Just the opposite of #1, it looks like the load stays high enough to never shut down when charging the tablet. This may not really be true, as I have only tried it a couple of times. Also, it isn't good for much more then one and a half charges of the tablet, as expected.
3) You need to figure out your own harness to get the 12 volts to the tablet.
4) No charge cable for a car. I mean this is rated for an input of like 10 to 15 volts, or some such. This thing is GREAT for charging portable devices. Charging it from a car is as simple as a cable, but there isn't one.
Over all this charger is a winner. At right around $55 US, I recommend it, if you can fabricate a plug for charging the Transformer.
Try a 12V UPS type battery along with a 2A fuse and adapters. It only costs about $20 or so. Plan on using only 50% of its capacity and recharge often to get the most life out of it.

For me, this is actually what I use now. But it has issues.
One is simply that it is large. I carry it in the trailer that I tow behind the motorcycle, so it is OK, but a bit too large and heavy. It is a gel cell that has about a 48 WattHr capacity. LiIon has a a lot less and weight. In this case, it has about the same capacity, in a very small light weight package.
The other problem is charging the lead acid battery is an issue. I need to carry a AC charger and find AC when camping. I put a diode/resistor combo in the trailer and tapped off of the taillights. but by the time the weak motorcycle voltage gets to the taillights, add in the diode and other losses, and I'm lucky to see 13 volts at the battery. Not enough to charge it very well. The LiIon pack I use has the supply built in to charge properly from +12.
So I've tossed the lead brick battery (literally) and upgraded to a portable LiIon pack. So far so good.
This is what I use "Portable 12V DC USB 5V Rechargeable Lithium Li-ion Battery Pack for CCTV Camera" search on ebay, you can get one up to 13AH
I got a 3.8AH version for $16 , Dimension: 9.2cm X 6.0cm X 3.0cm

small modification because the charger is NON-US wall plug, I just pull the plug pin out and add in a regular power cord cut off from an old appliance
Keep the USB plug for 5V use, cut the 12V DC cable and connect it to a female USB cable (pin 1 and pin 4) , then you can plug in the Asus usb/charge cable directly and charge or power the Asus

I thought my charger that I bought was defective cause I let it charge overnight and it wasn't fully charged. That is not the case.
The Charger that the Note comes with charges at 1A. Most of these external battery only chargers charge at 350mA.
Take a look at this calculator:

Using the link to the calculator above, you should expect a 2600mAh battery to fully charge using one of these cheap chargers in about 9 HOURS!! The charger that the note comes with should expect about 3.4 hours. That's a huge difference in charge time!!
So be sure to take a look at the output of these chargers before you get too excited and purchase one. If it takes you 24 hours to charge a battery, what good is it to you?

This is basically another scenario of 'you get what you pay for..'
It seems to often apply to batteries and chargers.
Whereas for like cases, you have a better chance of actually saving money and getting quality at the same time.

So I guess for battery longevity, you should use a 500 mA charger (the typical USB output). That way it doesn't charge it too quick (and overheat the battery).

No, actually. Lithium ion batteries, unlike nickle-cadium batteries actually perform and last better with short, fast charges. Android's battery stats are helped by a few full cycles, but it is not better for the battery to full cycle or slow charge.

*I am not an electrical expert, I just play one on TV.*
There are standards for USB outs. Just Google the standard. That said, there is USB1, USB2, and now USB3. Check your motherboard to see which one you have. There is also a newish thing on motherboards that will do a rapid charge by changing a setting on the BIOS. That's what i got off the top of my head. Do a little research.
As was pointed out on another thread, the Note looks for a low resistance/short between pins 2 and 3 of the USB cable. If it sees the low resistance, it enables a high current charge; otherwise, it sticks with USB standard charge of less than 500 ma. The 2/3 pin setup is not true of USB connections to a computer. The Note power adapter is set up this way to do a fast charge. Most chargers and portable battery chargers leave pins 2 and 3 unconnected, so they will not fast charge a Note even if they can supply 1A.
I purchased a Scosche 5000 mah battery with USB ports for charging Ipads, Iphones, and other devices. It also charges a Galaxy Tab with a special USB adapter plug. I tried the Tab adapter with my new Note and it was charging at 5 percent charged every ten minutes or so. Without the USB adapter, the Note charged at 2 percent every ten minutes or so. Without the adapter, the Note displays an MTP initialization notification. With the adapter, there is no MTP notification.
The Scosche battery is a big improvement over older Trent 5000 mah batteries. There is a push button to turn the Scosche battery on. The battery will turn off if no device is attached or it the device is fully charged. One of the ports can output 2.1A for an Ipad. The Trent battery would run down if it was left on.
Staples carries the Scosche battery for $80. I used a $29 online coupon from Staples that expires 3/5/2012.
I did not see anywhere on the Scosche website where they sell the Tab adapter by itself.

Do you have a model number on that USB adapter? Maybe in the instructions?
There is only the name Scosche on the adapter. The guide only calls it the Galaxy Tab adapter.

What does an "MTP initialization notification" look like on the Note? How do I identify it?
If I don't see it when charging, does that mean it's getting a fast charge for sure, or just that it might be?

Cut a USB cable, and strip a portion of the power wires. Set the multimeter to a 10A DC current scale (assuming it supports 10A, but most craftsman and up do, with common and a 10A lead), disconnect the plug, attach common to negative wire and positive to positive wire, gator clips or something, then plug it in and read it. The current support and time it can be on depends on the multimeter. Mine does up to 10A for Max 30 sec.

I'm looking for an external battery charger (preferably solar powered) for taking my Note on backpacking trips. Unfortunately, most of the solar packs that I've found have only .5 - .7 amps available for USB output. If I'm using a 1amp charging cable (with the data leads shorted), will .7 amps kick in the AC charging speed? Is .5 amps enough to charge the phone while I sleep for 7 hours?
I suppose it depends on how long you are out without power but another alternative is an external battery that allows you to charge your phone by plugging it into the external battery.
This one here (at $75 USD) will let you charge the Note from completely dead to a full complete charge 4.4 times.

So, if you started your backpacking with a full charge on both the phone and the battery pack, and assuming you charge the phone every night at say 20% battery left, you should get 6 days. If you need more than that, you can just buy a second battery pack (personally, Id want to have two just in case).
That's a good suggestion from littlewierdo. I would also have at least 2 spare batteries for the note. I don't think that .5 amps is enough.

Budge I had an HTC evo 4g and got a 5400mah battery. This worked ok. However the output is .5a which will not charge the note if you are using maps with gps or bluetooth or playing tunes. It wil charge when not using those. Say at night when you are asleep. I think you would have to find a battery with output better than 1a to actually charge when you are actively using your phone. I am not sure of the actual output you would need. I will research it though for my own needs. I do use my note on my motorcyle with a charger which outputs .5a and this is nowhere near what is needed to use google maps and bluetooth and play tunes.

The only solution for backpacking may be to charge when not using the note. I am fairly sure it will charge at .5a when sleeping.

Im not sure where you got the .5 amps from, it outputs 1 amp, so it will charge the Note with the screen on. However, it wont charge quite as fast as the wall charger will it will actually charge the phone.
It should be able to handle keeping the screen on, bluetooth doesnt use much power at all so playing music shouldnt be an issue and gps uses very little battery as well. I dont see an issue with it.
Admittedly, I dont have one of these, dont really have much of a use for one at the moment but I cant possibly see any issues with this.
HOWEVER, there are alternative external battery packs that are MUCH cheaper with less mah capacity (meaning, in simple speak, you would get less power storage meaning that you wouldnt be able to charge your phone as many times as you might like). There are other USB battery packs that might also have less power output (or more) which might mean that you wouldnt be able to keep the screen on AND charge the phone.
Truth be told, I only looked for the highest capacity battery pack given what your situation was AND I tend to buy higher end if the price makes sense. In the case of battery packs similar to this design (external usb battery packs), they generally start at $30 and go to about $80 so buying the best possible makes sense. However, if the highest/best possible was $200, Id probably get something cheaper, but since its only ~$80, if I were in your shoes, that would be my choice.
Id probably consider getting two of them (that is, if we are talking about longer than 1 week excursions, if under a week, just get 1) and a decently long usb cable (3-4 ft) but not too long (you dont want to be tripping over the cable but you need it long enough that if you need to, you can charge the phone mid-day while hiking).
You dont need multiple batteries for the Note, the whole point of this external battery pack is to eliminate the need for them.

littlewierdo I was not necessarily speaking of the device you suggested but one I had. I was warning Budge to be careful and not get a device which outputs only .5a. I was suggesting that he find one which will put out 2a if such exists. The device which you suggested will put out 1a. However I don't believe this would be enough for my purposes and maybe no Budge's either. i was not refering to your device or you. Not my intent to get in an argument with you but to help Budge find a suitable solution.

Littlewierdo- I didn't disagree with your suggestion to use another battery pack to charge the existing battery. In fact, I have one and use that option myself. I was adding that it may be a good idea to have a spare. I was responding to the OP who mentioned .5 amps. I assume that's where imesg was coming from, too.
The Xperia Tablet Z is a notoriously slow charger and won't charge over USB (from what I've heard, I don't have mine yet). Does anyone know of a portable charger or power pack that'll work with it?
Ideally one available in Europe.

The Xperia Tablet Z is supplied with a charger that connects to its USB port; so, the XTZ will charge via its USB port.
If you attempt to charge the tablet via a computer's USB port, that port must be capable of supplying enough charging amperes, otherwise, the tablet will not charge. Standard USB 2.0 ports supply up to 500 mA and standard USB 3.0 ports supply up 900 mA, neither of which is truly enough amperes to charge the tablet. USB ports on computers that are specifically designed for charging devices usually supply 1500 mA (1.5 A) or more. Some manufacturers mark these types of USB ports with a lightening bolt symbol.
As for portable chargers, I have not used any except for chargers that fit in my automobile's power plug (cigarette lighter plug).

Any halfway recent (read: last 5 years) USB charger will work with it. Be it the one Sony supplies with the tablet, an iPad charger...or one for the Galaxy Note 2.
USB chargers are standardized, you need a "special" one nowadays about as much as you need a "special" socket for a device with a power plug.
The only difference is that we have weaker and stronger chargers, but this does not limit their usability. If you use a weak charger your device will charge slower, if you use a charger with an higher maximum power as your device needs it will expl nothing bad will happen either, it won't take more from the charger than it can handle.
Personally I bought (since I need the original 1.5A charger for the dock) a 2A Samsung charger for travelling. I think it is the same as the Galaxy Note 2 uses, which you already have.
Oh, and it charges with the 2A one over USB also around 30% faster than with Sonys 1.5A.

Maybe I'm not being clear.
Portable power supply. With a battery. One that puts out enough power to actually use the XTZ while it's charging, even if doing so only keeps the battery the same rather than actually charging it.
Can anyone recommend anything?
I know it uses a standard micro USB connector to charge but I've heard it won't charge from most PCs as they don't put out enough power. My understanding of many portable chargers is that they also don't put out a great deal of power unless specifically designed for laptops and the like. I don't know if the tablet's needs are quite that, but I'm looking for anyone who has experience using a battery pack with it and if anyone has any recommendations.
Or am I being silly and it'll work with anything capable of charging any tablet?

It should. The XTZs battery isn't exactly high capacity as tablets go. The Nexus 10 has a 50% bigger one and the iPad3/4 one is almost twice as large.
The principle of power packs is in the end identical as that of basic USB chargers, even a 500mA one will charge the XTZ, but it will take around 15 hours for that (and around 24+ hours to charge an iPad). It isn't a question of "working", but of "working how fast". But, as said, the XDZ hasn't exactly an huge battery, so if anything it will charge faster than other Tablets.
Assuming you do not use it, that is. It is quite possible to discharge it as fast a 3A/hour if you use maximum screen brightness and CPU intensive tasks. But you can discharge other Tablets faster than you can charge them as well.
So what to use - same principle as with USB chargers, pick any. It does not matter if its power comes from a power plug or batteries. If ti works for one USB device it will work for all. What matters is it's maximum A output. One with 2A should be able to charge the XTZ in 4.5 hours, one with 1.5A in 6 hours, and so on...

The Sony CPF2LS USB Portable Power Supply with 7000 mAh Battery charges at 1.5 amps so it should work for you. I'd post a link to Amazon, but, alas, I can't. It's around 63 bucks.

There is a slew of chargers that will charge it. You can use laptop USB, but like mentioned if you use it while charging it will drain
To solve this problem you simply need to have a portable charger that will put out at least 1.5amp(which is what the tablet charges at if im not mistaken).
So plenty are on amazon or ebay which you should have access to in europe

Key thing is to simply look for the amerpage it puts out before you buy, that's how you know if it will charge and use the tablet at the same time. I can sucessfully do both using my car charger(2amp made for iphones) and my Powergen

The thing is this entirely depends how you use it. It is quite possible to use it in such a way that you would need a 3A charger to stop it from discharging. I do not think such one exists nor that the battery can accept such a charge.
So AFAIK a charger (be it a power plug or battery one) which stops it from discharging under all kinds of usage scenarios does not exist.
Therefore there is no answer to you "which charger I should use" question, only that the more A a charger puts out, the more usage scenarios will be covered (as in "will charge tablet while using it that way") by it.
Test how fast the Tablet discharges (without charging it) when you use it the way you plan to while using your charger. That will give you an indicator what kind of power you need. I.e. if it takes 12 hours even only a 0.5A charger will work, if it takes 2 hours you would need a 3A charger, which likely doesn't exists.
Im using an innergie charger that gives 2.1 amps and it charges a little faster than the 1.5a that came with it!

You know that that charger will only charge around 66% of the XTZs battery, though?
(Effective maximum capacity ~4A (see "attrition factor" explained in 2nd review), XTZs battery: 6A)
I am using my Samsung Note2 charger that states 2A.
Charges alot faster so for people with other chargers I should check samsung chargers haha.

Since I'm part of the lucky people owning a Huawei Ascend Mate 7 (MT7-TL10), I'm actually looking some accessories like a quick charger.
I wish a charger better than the original one if possible, with EU pins, and with a good quality checked (I prefer to avoid some product with awesome specs but not tested ...)
So anyone have any idea where I can find a good charger, and without any risk for my phone ?

for few days i went to jarir book store on KSA . I found Charger good price also 2 USB 5 volt 2.4 Amber ... compatiable with mate 7 and faster from orignal ...
just to know more fasting to charge wil damge your batter of mate 7 quickly .also orignal 2 A will damge
for me I charging with Iphone charge 1A good for batter and Stander and low risk to Device
If you want proper charging, then always use the accessories coming with that product. It is tested for sure and good. Other than that, you can use any charger delivering the same charge. The original charger is 5 volt, 2 Ampere. Don't use anything above 2 amperes as it may damage the device. Below that will charge it slowly.
BTW, why you don't want to use the original charger?

Can you test it with ampere (free in gplay) i don't think it will charge over 1800mA so that it acts like a normal 2a charger
Fast charging
Using a fast charger will destroy your battery faster. Not recommended as the battery is not removable. You can get a battery and if you are comfortable removing the back and swapping it out then go for it.

that is not correct as you are not connecting the charger to the battery directly. In fact the charger is just a power supply. The actual charger is integrated into the phone (charging controller).
In general you need to know that volts are pushed to the device by the power supply and amps are drawn by the device (phone) from the power supply. Therefor using a power supply with more than 5V will kill your phone but using one with 2A, 3A or even 4A will make no difference as the charging controller will just pull the amps required. Because of that you can not really fast charge a phone by changing the power supply only if the phone supports the fast charge option (for example some Nexus phones).
I tested this myself with a power supply (can provide 5V and 1.5 to 4 amps) and an amp meter. The phone always drew between 1.5 and 1.6 amps (with and empty battery, 8 to 10% left) regardless of the selected amps of the power supply. Using a power supply with less than 1.5A will kill the power supply as the phone tries to draw the 1.5 amps or more. As result the power supply will get hot and eventually die.

Why don't you buy a powerbank? I can advice you the xiaomi 16000mah. That one charges fast and you can be mobile.

I'm going to be honest, it doesn't really matter how you charge your phone as long as you don't go over 5v and 2 Amps. Batteries will automatically lose cells from charge cycles and by the time you feel the effects of the battery going bad, you would have already moved on to the next device for the next person to worry about. And saying to use the Stock Charger isn't really good enough as the Stock charger doesn't serve as a Car charger also. If you want to charge your phone quick, and you already have a 2 Amp charger, Check your microUSB cable. Don't use junk cables, buy quality or use the cable you received with the device. You get what you pay for. Fast Charging won't work as the Charger has a chip inside that communicates with the Phone and Device. Also, when buying a charger, don't just randomly buy a charger online, Make sure its UL Tested. Even if it says UL tested, there should be a test number on that UL Label, take it a step further and google it and make sure it matches the charger specs and passes as knockoff chargers are notorious for copying other chargers Regulatory icons to make it seem authentic. You don't want to buy a junk charger that ends up burning your house down or gives you a very bad 120 Volt shock through the microUSB cable that would also kill and fry your phone.

1.6A is nothing.. i use 2.0A and it still chrges 3 hours
one friend conected his phone to a hi suite, he went to repair sistem or something like that, and it pop out an option of QUICK CHARGE... even he doesent know how that hapends, now his phone charges faster. he is on b331 rom

You have not read my earlier post or you did not understand it. Changing the charger on the Mate 7 will have NO effect (zero, nada) on the time required to charge your phone except the charger delivers less then appr. 1.6A. Then it would take longer and evetually kill the charger. The Mate 7 uses a Kirin chip which has no fastcharge implemented. Samsung uses Qualcomm Chips with implemented fastcharge technology. The charger (in fact a power supply) and the phone/CPU/charge controller need to communicate with each other, otherwise fastcharge will not be activated (the reason fastcharge with charge-only cables does not work because they lack the required data cables for communication).

The amps of the charger don't matter at all -> amps are PULLED by the phone not pushed to the phone. You could use a charger with 100 or 1000 amps and it would not hurt your phone a bit as long as it is only charged with 5 Volts.
More amps (>1.6A) on the charger do not improve the time for charging one second.

Yes, and that won't change one bit even if you use the best and most expensive charger and a 1000$ cable. The Mate 7 is limited by its hardware (built in charge controller) and pulls max 1.6A. End of story.
As long as you don't understand how charging works you will spend 100's of bucks for cables and chargers to no avail.
The only reason, why charging with some charges is quicker than with others is that those chargers actually deliver the amps they are supposed to deliver. There are a lot of cheap/bad chargers out there which are labelled with 5V/2A but only deliver a fraction of the amps. You can identify those chargers easily because they get extremly hot. I use a 2A charger from Aukey which gets only lukeworm.
