Any way to root S3 without a PC? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since windows can't recognize my galaxy S3, I'm thinking of rooting it without connecting it to the computer.
Are there any method that can grant root AND custom recovery without using a computer?

@TrojanHorses:
1. If Windows doesn't recognize your S3, try another cable, an USB-port on motherboard, deinstall all Samsung-crap and get Odon fresh from sammobile.com.
2. If you had entered your question in search, you'd got fe this thread

Tried to use a different cable, and also different computers, all cannot recognize my s3. Other phones work fine though. Did a reinstall of samsung usb drivers and also reinstall/uninstall kies. I'm fairly certain that it must be a hardware problem
Sadly, framaroot doesnt work.

@TrojanHorses: if you connect after having booted normally into system, does it charge?

You have samsung usb 6 pin ? Others are 5 pin, i buyed galaxy s3 and usb cable in box didnt working in odin, i create myself and now work

KingRoot should do the trick.
No computer required.
I used KingRoot to root and now I have CM13 and TWRP installed properly.

[Q] Mouting issues (MTP)

Hi guys!
I have a rooted international Galaxy S3 (i9300) phone with a custom rom: UltimaRom (version 8.x), and using XXELLA kernel (?) and XXELLA Modem version.
Since a while, I'm trying to manage the files in it (phone memory or sd card) from my computer, simply by using an USB cable (the one given with the phone or even other cables, it doesn't matter) and the standard MTP protocol, which is used by Google since Android 3.0. And, whatever I try to do, Windows doesn't seem to notice anything. In my device manager, nothing appears. Nothing either in the "My Computer" window, it just doesn't "exist". No reaction at all from Windows. The Phone's charging, but this is all it is.
And I have the same problem using another computer (like my own laptop, or my brother's one). All computers are running Windows 8 x64 Pro.
I tried to install, re install, delete, etc. all the phone drivers I have on this computer, tried to install Samsung Kies, tried some "mounting" apps on the Play Store, nothing's working.
What should I do to make it work?
Thanks a lot!
Might be stating the obvious but is your phone set at usb debugging? I have the same issue from time to time but when I unplug and plug back it fixes itself.
Hope you get your stuff fixed soon.

Yes, USB Debugging is enabled.

That's odd.. I use Ultima ROM and have updated to 8.1.1. I just checked just to make sure (my last update was done OTA) and yeah, computer recognized phone right away.. heard a little computer sound and everything. I am also running Windows 8
The base changed in v8. If you haven't done a fac reset since then you should try that.
Ok I just tried to make a factory reset, nothing changes...
Oh, and if that can help: when the phone's booting, Windows says "Unrecognized device". When it's booted up, it disapears.
Anyone ?
Drivers...
I used these drivers.
It worked for me...

Unfortunately it didn't work for me.... :/
Any other ideas ?
Sorry to keep rising this thread but this issue is really annoying... :/

I still have the same problem. No other ideas please ?

- Easy UMS doesn't seem to work, even if the app doesn't show any error on the phone
- How do I connect via ADB ? I tried to connect the phone while it is in Download Mode, nothing appears on Windows or Odin
- As I said, in Download Mode, Odin doesn't seems to recognize anything...
And of course, I already tried to change the cable, the USB port, or even the computer i'm connecting the phone to...
Thanks again for your help
Starting to sound like a damaged micro USB port on the phone possibly, or a driver's problem
Oh, and there's a thing: when I reboot the phone, while the Samsung logo appears on the screen with the short jingle, the PC makes 3 or 4 times a sound like something has been plugged, and showes a "Unrecognized device" warning window. When the boot is finished, and the rom is loaded, everything just disappears and no sound is any longer made by the PC.
Also, please note that when I connect the phone to the PC (using the same PC, cable and USB port of course), the phone charges up just like before, without any problem.
have you tried the old drivers?
search Google for " Samsung USB drivers 1.4.6.0 "
disconnect your computer from the internet
Install the drivers.
don't reconnect to the internet.
connect your phone and let windows find the drivers

[Q] conecting via USB

Hi, I need advice, today I made the root SGS2 and when you want to load custom ROM so I need to get to the phone memory. But since I can not root galaxy connect to it via usb to pc not know what to do? I tried to reinstall the drivers remove kies etc.. nothing ..
Thank you all for your advice.
What?
Aha ..
Sorry for my bad English.
so, again
Today I made a root on my Samsung galaxy s2.
Since then we can not connect the phone to the computer via usb cable.
Because I want to insert a custom ROM, you need to connect to the PC.
Therefore I would like to ask you whether you know what happened? Why can not I connect to PC via USB cable while before we root via usb cable worked.
I tried reinstalling drivers but still nothing.

Don't know about the whole pc-thing, but you can download roms directly to your phone.
And btw, opening two of the same topics is not the way to let people answer your questions faster. Next time just open one thread.

Well if you want to go into usb mode...settings> (under wireless) go into more settings>usb utilities>connect to pc
Then connect your phone to the computer and remember to keep usb debugging off..
Or you can simply take your data in a mmc via card reader and put it into your internal from the mmc...

[Q] Help. usb stopped working

I have a samsung galaxy s3 with stock firmware. I've hade a few custom roms before but put it back to stock for some reasons. But now odin does't recognize my phone. Drivers are up to date, the usb cable is the same, other phones are detected (s2 and s5). i have tried other cables including from other s3's from the box. I tried to root it from sd but still no luck, so i can't put custom rom from sd. Is there any way to put a rom from sd without rooting? it can be stock, it doesn't matter(i'm stuck with stock recovery). Also I consider myself a noob, so any explanation would be appreciated. Thank you
No, there isn't. Try another pc or resolve the usb conflict on the pc.

The same thing on other PC's.
I can only suggest following the guide on how to flash with Odin very carefully, then try searching for similar posts that got resolved.
However, most I've read were due to drivers or leads -if your phone connects normally in MPT mode but not in download mode then it's unlikely to be the s3 is faulty.

Same here!
Having exactly the same issue here! When connected by usb cable to the computer, theres no USB connection on the status bar. Just the ray symbol on battery to demonstrate the USB is connected.
I need to change my ROM, but even Odin didn´t recognise my phone.
Some clue?
Thanks!
Ps: sorry for my poor English....

[Q] Root when phone is not detected

Hello everyone, I could not find a good title for my issue but I will try to explain as well as I can. I own a GT-I9300 (International), but since last official Samsung's firmware update(Jelly Bean 4.3) I am not able to get my phone recognized by my computer. Phone is connected and it charges, but neither Windows or Ubuntu recognizes it as a portable device. I am concerned about UMS is not available on device, but my phone it does not even get detected! I also own a Galaxy SII (4.1.2) and it does get detected by my PC. I think that flashing a custom ROM could solve the problem, since it appeared when I updated official firmware, but the thing is that I cannot root my phone! Tried ODIN but since my phone does not get detected, ODIN does not do its job. I also tried rooting with framaroot and towelroot, but no success: first one says "Failed , try another exploit" but there is only one. And the last one says my phone is not currently supported, even if I change modstrings.
So here is my question: how do I root my phone? I don't know what else I could try. I have already reinstalled Kies and Samsung USB drivers but still not working. Also hard-resetted but no luck.
Hope you guys can help me out because this is really getting on my nerves
Thanks in advance!

The thing is that my phone is the only one that do not get detected every single time I connect it. I have already connected one GT-I9100 and GT-S6790L and both get detected. I already tried on 3 different Virtual Machines with Windows XP, Ubuntu, Windows 8.1 but no luck.
As I said in the first post, I think it's a firmware problem since it appeared when I did the official update, which was this one:
Model GT-I9300
Model name GALAXY S III
Country Argentina
Version Android 4.3
Build date Wed, 05 Nov 2014 20:33:08 +0000

I can see your frustration Now a few things technically it is a misconception that you need root to flash a custom rom you can actually flash a custom recovery with Odin full wipe and then flash a custom rom from custom recovery (only thing is you will lose all your data because you need root to back up your data)
Now I know the above statement is not very helpful because as you said Odin doesn't detect it (but I thought I would mention it anyway )
The reason framaroot and towelroot, didn't work is because at the moment the only way to root S3 is with Odin.:crying:
You may have tried this but I will mention it anyway first uninstal Kies and all Samsung drivers from your computer ( kies can interfere with Odin) Then try installing these drivers here >> http://developer.samsung.com/techni...Lhp1GqlWRy92Q60CX6PP1mF!80806326?v=T000000117 << If you have tried this then sorry.
Also when you connect the phone go to Device manager in Windows and try to look for your device ( it may say unkown device) it should have a warning triangle right click on it select update driver software and then select browse from my computer and point to the drivers that you have downloaded see if that works.
Another thing to note is if you are using Windows 8 you need to disable Driver signature in start up options ( Google it) for Windows to recognize the drivers.

I already tried uninstalling Kies and Samsung drivers. Also I tried looking for device on Device Manager but it does not appear when I plugin my S3, but it does appear when I connect other devices like S2 or Galaxy Fame Lite. They appear as portable devices.
I'm using Windows 7 on my PC and have already tried with different OS over Virtual Machines and still doesn't work.
And thanks for that note, didn't know there was possible to flash a Custom Recovery without root, but I can't since ODIN doesn't detect device :crying:
Then it looks like you are running out of options I would use another computer not Virtual Machines
Okay I'll give it a try but as I said before, looks like an firmware issue, not computer's. Why would my computer detects two another Samsung devices but not mine (which used to work until last update)
Me, too!
I'm having a similar problem. Last week my GS3 stopped working, and I bought another one from Ebay with a cracked screen and swapped out motherboards. The phone seems to work as well as a stock Verizon phone on Jellybean would, but I can't get my Linux, Win 8, or Win XP computers to even recognize that it's attached. Different cables, each and every one of the USB ports, not even a blip. Device Manager in Windows doesn't even see it, and yes I got the developer options unlocked and have enabled USB debugging.
I've got the Samsung drivers installed, and tried to install the CWM device drivers from the SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 TOOLKIT V9, but there was an error and that didn't work, either.
USB connection issues are usually due to Windows conflicts, driver problems or the lead itself. If all these have been excluded then you have either a firmware issue in the bootloader, which is very uncommon, or a hardware problem. The usb port is easily worn/damaged/dirty also the motherboard might be the cause.
There is no silver bullet to cure, test each possible thoroughly.

I'm 100 percent sure that it is not due a Windows issue, I have already test every option. I have not considered the usb port to be damaged or worn, which could be possible but phone charges every time I connect it to computer. It just does not get detected as a device. But in order to assume it is a motherboard issue I will have to put away my feeling that the problem is caused by last OTA official update, since this problem started there.
If it is a firmware update issue, is it any option to flash another ROM?

As I said on previous posts, I have already installed and reinstalled Samsung USB drivers and made a factory reset -one from config. option and another one from Android stock recovery 3e (since I cannot install any advanced recovery -or even root it- to flash a custom rom). Doing those factory reset did not downgrade my last firmware update (when all my problems started).
I also said on previous posts that I tried towelroot and framaroot with no success. As tallman43 says, seems like international version of S3 does not support those kind of one-click to root apps.
-----------------------------------------------------
So far the only options available (if my theory about latest firmware update is the problematic one) are:
● downgrade firmware: [Q] How? Odin is not working since my phone does not get detected;
● root my phone in order to install an advanced recovery and flash a new ROM: [Q] Any way of rooting phone without computer (apart from towelroot or framaroot because I have tried and do not work for me)? I read one XDA post from 2 years ago to root S3 via console apk but latest comments assumes that method stopped working.
● install an advanced recovery without odin or root: [Q] How?
● fix USB firmware issue: [Q] I have completely no idea how to do it. (Already played with *#7284# and *#0808# but did not get my phone detected)
Please I need help, this is really irritating me and I am running out of ideas

I guess I have found out what the problem was. It was not firmware (as I thought). It was the micro USB port (as boomboomer said) which seems to not be firmly attached to the PCB. AC charging just seems to work okay, but not USB connections. I managed to figure it out by forcing the USB in a specific position to get it detected for 5 seconds, but then it disappeared.
Yeah, it was not as complex as I thought! I will try to replace that micro USB port as soon as possible, thanks everyone for your help!

[Q] Samsung S6 Undetectable by Computer

Hello guys i'll try to keep my explanation short.
Device Samsung S6 Edge (rooted)
Not detected by ANY PC anymore, HOWEVER it does charge.
I Tried 5 different cables (new, original, old) cables do work so does the main PC
as my other devices are detected.
I have deleted KIES, SMART SWITCH , DRIVERS and reinstalled in the same order.
So, i flashed the S6 back to stock using TWRP (S6 was running Custom Rom XtrestoLite).
Still nothing, so i deleted all my files from the phone and flashed it back to stock again.
Still nothing, so i wiped the complete OS off the S6.
Now i'm here.

Tell me the status for now, S6 is running on stock or custom??
enable usb debugging and install usb driver again, also check in another pc/laptop whether they are detecting it or not.
Use Original cable and give a shot This might help you.
Also head over to Samsung's ofifcial Developer website and fetch the Samsung USB Driver pack which is about 15MB.
That generally solves the issue. Atleast for me!
I had the same problem think the usb board is damaged... you should replace it.
It was running a custom rom, but now the phone has no rom. I can only into download mode or TWRP and thats it.
So there are no options available on the phone itself.
I tried kies driver, smart switch driver, seperate driver from samsung website, i've also tried clockwork samsung driver. Nothing works for me.
Maybe it's the micro usb port that is damaged, but i highly doubt that.

Highly improbably that the USB board is damaged. Try different cables and before that, try it on a different PC. Sometimes it does work. My friend's S6 wouldn't read in Download Mode on my PC but it did on his.
Also head over to Run on your PC and type devmgmt.msc and check if there are any drivers missing.
I think the problem is the drivers
Install new drivers or find other samsung ... and try again
i've installed many drivers including the one that is 15,3mb in size.
guys it's not the computer because it does detect my tablet and my s7.
which also means that it's not the cables and believe me i have tried many cables about 8 cables now .
it's not the drivers, i dont know what it could be.
i think i'll order a new micro usb port and try that out eventhough i know that the usb port can't be damaged.
Unless one of you has a better idea, you are welcome to share.
Update: Hi guys, i've replaced the port but the phone is still undetectable by any computer.
Does anyone know what's wrong with this device?
Seriously, is there NO ONE of you guys with any knowledge or what?
I was going to say your usb charge port is damaged enough that it will charge but not transmit data but i re-read your post and realized you can't have a charge port issue if you able were able to flash stock rom. If you have teamviewer, pm me and i'll try to help you.
I have had this issue before in the past. Turned out that the cable was at fault. Swapped it and everything worked as expected, computer found it once again.
If it's not the cables as you claim, then you may have to ship it to samsung and request a replacement device.
