How to Root G5 H820PR - LG G5 Questions & Answers

Hey guys, has you can see I currently have the G5 model H820PR which is from Claro Puerto Rico. I have struggled to find a tutorial to root this G5.
Does anyone know if this device can be rooted? I have seen that the ATT variant is H820 but mine is H820PR.

I'm on the same boat. It can't be rooted yet, and if it can be near future.
No root. No party.

It didnt have root, I decided to Return the device.
Now I have the S7.

Man if I can't get root I think I will return the device. Currently I'm using my old SGS4 running CM 12.1 (as personal device) I still carry (and use) a trusty old BlackBerry 9900 as a daily workhorse... I can't get rid of it as for enterprise emailing.

[Q] G2 International variant D802

LG has started to sell the international version D802 in Hong Kong since last week.
Is it available in other countries yet?
So far I only see we got some developments for US carrier and Korean variant but none for international.
Can't wait to see the roms for international variant!

yep, we heve it here in israel , but it will deliverd from the 1/10 with the international release of lg,
I do! I'm in Singapore, the telcos here all sell the D802.
Do you have root running on it? I'm not sure if IO root works on it(don't dare to void my warranty yet, especially with the root check software LG built in)
IOroot works on D802! I rooted my phone already.
SERIOUS. I'll do it tomorrow
Anything popping up anywhere on a "modified status" or such? I supposed TWRP should work too right ^^

IKR. Best part is that it's cheaper than the other top end devices out there *Note 3*
@somboons
Ahwell :/ What do you think could cause that? I have no idea how to build roms/kernels/recoveries but I think (hope) it's a few small tweaks to the installer

Because they are slightly different, someone needs go on IRC to give the devs the aboot and recovery images and then test it out.

hello , quick question about rooting the LG G2 (or any other phone in this case). Can I root the phone and leave all the software and functionalities, gimmicky software, bloatware intact ? The only reason I'm looking forward to root this phone is to install Cerberus Rooted Version. And can I unroot the phone afterward so not to avoid warranty ? Thanks
I really wouldn't mind doing that Worst case scenario is a fresh firmware flash right?

Dang...and I just reupped with T-Mobile and had to adb/fastboot/TWRP to unlock and root my V10.
Noob here, is it possible to buy a T-mobile variant, root it, then drop in a Verizon SIM without losing root? Is there any workaround to get root while on Verizon?

Of course. The sim card has no bearing on if the phone is rooted or not. You probably won't get all of Verizon's LTE bands in the T mobile version. I honestly doubt at the moment if the Verizon variant will ever get root.

You are thinking of the wrong kinda unlock, you are thinking of bootloader unlock, but OP is referring to carrier unlocked, meaning that the Verizon version can be used on att Sprint and T-Mobile.

Never say never, the G3 wasn't supposed to ever get root, and it did, so anything is possible. In fact, a lot of Devs look at it as a challenge

Simple, they srew up Updates. It's absolute nonsense that the Providers in the US still provide Devices with own Firmwares.
They stoped doing that Years ago in other Countries since the Device Firmwares get more and more complex.
It does also slow down the whole Update release speed for new Updates from the OEM's. A free Device is always the better choice...
Let's see how long it takes till You get Nougat...

Apparently I have been able to root my H831...
I recently had my 4 month old LG 5 overheat and quit working. I returned it to the Cell phone provider (FreedomvMobile) who sent it to Futuretel in Ontario as the authorized repair centre in Canada.
They have informed me that I have rooted the phone and therefore it is not covered under warranty. I did not know what rooting was until I googled it. I have not rooted the phone. They are refusing to fix the phone. They say that the test of the phone is conclusive and that it was rooted. It was not. Does anyone have any idea if there are other causes that would make the technician at Futuretel think that it was rooted? I need some information before I go even further with this ridiculous response from Futuretel. Help!

Well, I went and signed for all it is worth. I still have a G5 in my collection and I would love to get it onto Lineage and let my son use it.
Really would like to root my phone as well :/
Still no news on rooting h831??
That is a good question. There was finally an update to Android 8.0 for our devices but I wonder if it made it so they can be unlocked and whatnot...
I don't want to be negative, but I guess in the end we will have to sell this device and buy another one, just to have an unlocked bootloader and root

Well, I and my wife upgraded to Galaxy S9s this spring due to a seriously unbeatable deal. Had the G5 supported the AWS bands used by the new carrier we switched to, she would still have been using it but alas, nope.
We still have her LG G5 and my son uses it as an ipod of sorts. I would love to root the thing just so newer OS' can be installed on it as it will never be a phone again so I don't need to worry about things like tap to pay and such. I guess it getting to Android 8 will have to do.
Yeah, I would love to root if possible too but I understand that our device is not popular enough just as H850 is or H830.
Would be trying to sell this device and buy another one then...

Ya, see, there is one general complaint that fits this... I hate that there are so many damned models of each of the main model names... As in there is never really JUST an LG G5 or JUST a Galaxy S9.
If you look HARD enough there is a way to ROOT a H831. You have to use Marshmallow 6.0 and follow a small tutorial that you will find if you look HARD. I am not sure if you can roll back to v6.0 so you can force root but hey all you have to do is LOOK!

[HELP] Bootloader still locked as of 2018-03-03 ... so, how to do certain things ?

Hello from Switzerland,
A few days ago, I made a little-big mistake : I bought a second-hand LG G5 from AT&T, the inglorious H820 ...
The question is then, should I keep it or resell/return it ?
I need some help to decide what to do, hence this message.
The main interest for me was - and still is - the "photo quality" this Phone delivers.
And if I read well some posts here and there, the app provided by LG is the best one for this phone, better than ported ones from other builds or photo apps on GooglePlay.
=> a) could someone confirm that the best photo app for quality pix is the one provided by LG ?
As of still today (2018-03-03), the bootlader cannot be unlocked and certainly never will because this is done by LG Developpers and there is no interest in making an "old" bootloader unlockable for LG "heads".
This means no "custom recovery" with TWRP, no apps requiring root access, no "better" wifi eventually ... and so on.
No big deal for me as my main concern is debloating the phone more than anything else and keeping it updated for security reasons and keeping it update with genuine patches supposed to solve eventual issues. (The phone is old and these patches should be out by now).
=> b) If TWRP cannot be used, what is the best solution for the fullest backup and closest one to TWRP ?
Holo/Helium ?
Or is there a new/different way to do the fullest possible backup/restoration thing ?
LG G5 H820 seems to be still running on MM and at least other models such as Verizon and EU H850 should receive this year Nougat.
=> c) Will there be a Nougat update for the H820 as for other types (=H850) ?
=> e) With the end of developpement of this phone, will security patches still be provided ?
Thanks for your attention and help in deciding what I should do with this "particular" version of LG G5.

all of your questions can be answered if you put out 5 minutes of your day to google them.
And what do you think I've done all day before posting ?
Knowledge is always evolving ... and who knows ... maybe some nice guy will have a less "geeky moderator" approach to my message.
All I need is either confirmation or hints to know what to look for.
And this can be answered in less words it took you to answer "Google it"
Thanks.
it does have nougat
security patches will likely happen for a few more months, but i imagine not much longer since nobody cares about this phone
i dont backup anything. its just a phone. auto save your pictures to google and screw the rest. you cant do a full backup so why bother with a partial one.
best camera app for me is the stock one (nougat). ive tried others but they have weird issues. stock app always works and the quality is good.
if you want everything youre asking for, this isn't the phone to do it. As a stock phone, its wonderful.. but trying to modify anything on this is a joke. I did get wifi tethering to work with the settings database editor (playstore), and i was able to remove the stupid ATT address book popup... but thats about it as far as mods go.

Hi Resinis,
Thanks for your reply.
You're right ... Pictures and other personal and unreplacable things is what really matters.
The bootloader thing + root is not for customizing ... it is more more for debloating and convenience of usage is some particular change of setting goes wrong AND ... fop apps requiring root eventually.
Thanks for "nougat" info.
I'll see when I'll receive the phone ... it will be "keep it or resell it"
Have a nice day,

If you don't use ATT or ATTGo, then the phone (H820) will not update. But, you can buy an ATTGo phone sim card on ebay for like $3. Once you get the sim, go to ATT's website and activate the sim card. It will ask you to enter in some info... you can use a fake name if you want but you don't need to. Once it gets to the option of which plan you want, just pick whatever, it doesn't matter ($30/month plan is fine). Then it will say "activated! now go to payments page to make your first payment". Then just close the browser and that's it. Pop the sim card in your G5 and wait about 10 min before you try to update the phone. It should start taking all the updates, and eventually put Android 7 on it.
The sim will remain "active" for about 20 days. After that, the system flags it due to non payment and then its dead. It can't be used for anything besides updating the phone, because you didn't put money on it.
I agree with wanting to root so you could debloat this thing... I wish that was possible... but it's not and generally I don't think it matters... just disable what apps you can, and the couple ATT apps that can't be disabled are just left as is. Oh well. Phone still works great.

I would still spend the $6 on an AT&T SIM and give it a shot. I am in Canada and activated the SIM I've got off E-bay on a $40 plan that includes roaming. My updates work.
Would it be because the plan I've picked has the Canada & Mexico Roaming option? Not sure.
