I flashed Xiaomis Official Global ROM with gapps (maybe that's where I went wrong?) and I went to reboot after a successful flash and it refuses to power on, go to recovery and it's not recognized in windows. Says there was an error or something.
Please give me ideas asap!

Okay, that method fixed it. Thanks so much, now the next problem I have is that no matter how many times I flash TWRP or what version of it that it won't actually work. The flash goes through fine but when I reboot to recovery, it's just the stock one and not TWRP

Any time you boot up MIUI it replaces stock recovery, so you need boot straight into TWRP.
You need to use a TWRP that patches the boot image or flash Universal Boot Img Patcher (UBP).
See this thread: - http://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/how-to/guide-redmi-note-3-available-twrps-t3406708

Hello there,
I got a Kate device, which I unlocked unofficially after oficial unlock failed after 50% in September.
Now I'm running TheStrix' CM14.1 with this firmware:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/how-to/cm14-14-1-aosp-n-firmware-kenzo-kate-t3507789
But now I read, that TheStrix recommends flashing the MIUI Dev Rom, and afterwards his new 14.1 Firmware in order to run 14.1 correctly.
From what I read so far, its recommended to do the official unlock now, because it is working. And there is no chance of accidentally relocking it afterwards?
Could someone give me a hint on how to accomplish that? A short step-by-step list would be much appreciated!
I guess I would have to Flash the dev rom first, then unlock, then flash the firmware and then install CM14.1, is that right?
How do I flash the dev rom and which one is the right one?
Will my TWRP stay in place during all this or do I have to install it again? Am I using the right TWRP for all these operations?
Right now I have TWRP 3.0.0-0 cofface installed.
While TheStrix recommends using his TWRP with F2FS support. Would it be safe to flash that now?
Thank you guys so much!
The only way to do it by flashing official MIUI fastboot ROM in EDL mode via MiFlash.

for those who want to flash custom roms without taking the time to unlock bootloader follow this steps..
1- download any miui fastboot rom
2-extract it
3- download alka twrp recovery
4-rename it recovery. img and paste it in the extracted folder thus replacing the miui recovery
5-flash using mi flash tools in EDL mode
6-now you have TWRP installed... format your phone.. and now copy the roms, mods, whatever the **** you want in your phone by pc and you can flash that

Thank you all for your replies. To sum it up, I made a step-by-step list, could someone please confirm that.
1. Put phone in fastboot mode and flash official MIUI fastboot dev ROM (6.11.24) in EDL mode.
2. Unlock phone using MiUnlock
3. Install TWRP (f2fs) using fastboot
4. Install CM14 Kate firmware provided by TheStrix
5. Install CM14.1 nightly by TheStrik
6. Install Gapps
Is that about right? Can you tell me after which steps I will have to wipe? And which partitions to wipe..?
Hi guys,
Before you say again a topic on a non bricked One Plus X, I would like to let you know that I've checked and try almost all of the tutorial I've seen on xda and one plus forum.
I was on CM14.1 with this ROM : https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-x/orig-development/rom-cyanogenmod-14-onyx-t3452150
Unfortunately, I made the 25-12-2016 update and it totally broke up the phone..
I download the OnePlus X OxygenOS 3.1.4 on the One Plus website. So I flash it on the stock recovery, it tells me "Install success" then I reboot and it stays on the bootlogo.
For information, I can't access the oem unlock menu if needed, but when I ask the oem device info it says unlocked. The phone is detected by the computer sometimes with unknown device and sometimes correctly with the qualcomm drivers..
I have a back up made from TWRP, I can access the device by the fastboot mode, it seems that all the operations written here worked but it doesn't install or even boot on TWRP..
Thanks for your help guys.

Start by seeing if you can fastboot flash stock recovery from any 2.X.X OOS. Then fastboot flash twrp 3.0.2. If your on new bootloader meaning latest ROMs or OOS3 then you need to boot into 3.0.2 and from there you can flash IMG of twrp 3.0.3. Make sure you boot right back into recovery after flashing any twrp or it won't stick. This worked for me when I lost my recovery twice but always remember at your own risk. Not responsible if you make your phone into a paper weight.
Fix It!

Hi Mate
unfortunately the latest twrp doesn't work, you will need to revert to "twrp-3.1.1-0-x2"
it is working fine, you can do so on windows once all drivers installed correctly or use any Linux operating system
if you need help let me know and will write a detailed instruction how to do it on Linux as it is a lot easier than junk windows
good luck

Updated for more serious reference. Hope this info helps you!
Procedure:
Once you have updated to Nougat, you would have to unlock your bootloader
The APK that unlock the bootloader works (Even though is marked as M version). (Remember that this will wipe your device!) For ULBL -> Version UnlockTool_2017_0803(android M) (FROM ASUS) https://www.asus.com/us/Phone/ZenFone-3-Zoom-ZE553KL/HelpDesk_Download/
Zenfone will reboot and you will able to see a new splash screen that informs you that your device is unlocked giving you boot options Don't press anything. (You will see this everytime you reboot). The next screen will show an erase process. Phone will reboot.
Once booted enable developer options and adb via usb.
You can find TWRP builds right here: https://mega.nz/#F!p90wgAaY!l1JbJilmAUEKTKWu43pT9w (Special thanks to: @shakalaca) Use the latest one.
Go to fastboot mode and install TWRP. (fastboot flash recovery (nameoffile).img)
Let fastboot do it's magic, once you finish press volume buttons till you find reboot recovery press power button to select. It will boot again to the first splash. Do not press anything, let it work. It will boot TWRP in a whistle.
Once in TWRP make a backup. You know it's necessary, and will save your ass in case of a softbrick.
Flash latest magisk (Current Ver: 13.3) Magisk thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445
Reboot, check drawer for magisk manager, magisk and root should be enabled.
Voila. Safetynet test passed :good:
what version was twrp are you using and what steps did you take to get magisk to work.
smariob said:
So today finally I got my Asus Zenfone 3 Zoom. I couldn't contain myself to start playing with it.
My very first surprise was that the phone requested for an update. I've done it. I ended with a stock 7.1.1 AZ3Z.
This is my experience:
The APK that let you unlock bootloader works. (Remember that this will wipe your device)
After auto reboot I cheched safetynet. At this point test failed (Little bit obvious)
I was able to go to fastboot mode and install TWRP (The same you can find right here at the forum)
Let fastboot do it's magic, press volume buttons till you find reboot recovery. It will boot TWRP in a whistle.
Once in TWRP I made a backup. You know if necessary.
The next step was a crossfinger procedure. Just flashed latest magisk Beta (13)
Reboted checked for magisk manager on drawer.
It was there and root also. Enabled magiskhide, and voila. Safetynet test passed :good:
Hope this Info help you.

Just a question as I'm having difficulty booting into TWRP.
My device is unlocked and when flashing TWRP using the command "fastboot flash recovery twrp.img" and trying to boot into it nothing happens other than my device going into the bootloader. I have tried flashing both the most recent TWRP 3.1.1 and 3.1.0 yet I keep on coming to the same problem. Can anyone provide help? thanks in advance.

Everytime you reboot the pone starts into boot loader. It has a countdown to boot into whatever is commanded.
Once you flashed succesfully the recovery img you just have to select option to boot recovery with vol keys and power.
Phone will reboot into bootloader agin let it boot on contdown (don't press any key)
Then it will boot into twrp.
Hello, on nougat i am trying to install the twrp, I downloaded the official bootloader release program (after installing the message "unlocked device") but trying to install the twrp via fastboot me by an error message. ... but I think the problem is the unlocking of the bootloader (if I turn the ze553kl in fastboot mode I see my device is "locked") ... there is another version of the bootloader release software? The one available on asus site would look for android M ... maybe there is one for Nougat? Thanxs
Wop. I used the M version apk on Nougat. It worked with no issues, the unlock of boot loader is successful when all the content of your smartphone is wiped.
For reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hg77b8o8Jk4 Min 1:29
Thank you! But running the software, does not run any wipe, it only displays an "unlocked" message without having to restart anything else. I also tried to make a "factory reset" and repeat lab process but the result does not change ...

Works just fine, thank you
But how would I go about setting the phone back to stock if needed in the future? (Removing Magisk, and replacing TWRP with the original recovery software).
@bizzino No news for you i wasn't able to find more info I'm sorry. Maybe change it for warranty? @subsector you should flash original recovery via fastboot and then sideload the stock rom
Unlocking Bootloader1. Make sure you have a sim and active mobile data. Then go to about phone tap build number 7-8 times. After that go to advanced settings > developer options > turn on OEM unlocking and then check if this device is secure and click add account and device.
2. Download Mi unlock tool from here. Extract it and paste it in C:/unlock. or else your device won't be recognized for unlocking.
3. Open Mi unlock tool and then enter the Mi account which was on your device. Put your device in fastboot mode by pressing vol- and power and then connect to PC. Press unlock and if it tells you to wait you have no other option but to wait. If your mi flash tool shows connect your device even after you have connected it. Follow this guide here.
4. After you have unlocked your bootloader reboot your phone.
Flashing TWRP and Rooting via magisk
1. Download this TWRP image here. Thanks to the original developer mauronofrio.
2. Download adb and fastboot tools here and install it.
3. Now put your phone in fastboot mode and connect it with your pc. Now where you have downloaded the TWRP file rename it to TWRP.img and open a CMD window there if you don't know how just google.
4. Type the following commands
1. fastboot devices
2. fastboot flash recovery TWRP.img
3. fastboot reboot recovery.
Click to collapse
5. Your phone will boot into TWRP now. But TWRP will be overwritten by stock miui recovery to stop that you need to flash Magisk. Download this zip move it to internal storage then flash by tapping on install and swipe to flash. Reboot your device. Reboot to recovery again to check if TWRP is present.
Now your device is rooted
OR
Flash latest OrangeFox Recovery if you don't want magisk.
Flashing A rom
1. Download.
2. Flash.
3 Format Data.
Done
Feel free to ask any questions. And don't point a finger at me for messing your device.

Okay keep the sim inserted and use the device for 7 days. And if it doesn't work try using older version of unlock tool.
Hi there!
Silly question: is it possible to install TWRP but keep the official ROM? (phone is unlocked)

Flashing a custom rom is optional. You don't NEED to flash a rom to get TWRP...
---------- Post added at 06:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:46 PM ----------
I've unlocked the bootloader using the unlock tool and waited for 7 days,
But i rooted the device using a different method where i patched a boot.img and flashed that to the device.
Will this method still work for me as I'm already rooted but just want TWRP so i can flash other ROMs.. The post says you have to flash magisk from the (temporary) TWRP for the TWRP to stay as the recovery..
Will the magisk on my phone and the magisk installed here collide?
I just want TWRP so i can switch to a custom rom, so any input is appreciated!!

Skip the flashing a rom part and you will be good to go.

You can flash twrp and then check if it persists. If not flash magisk again their is no thing as magisk colliding lol. Just make sure you flash a newer version. And if nothing works flash stock rom and then twrp.
If you have the stock boot IMG flash it and then intsall twrp and magisk.

Haha, makes sense! Thank you for your answers
Nevermind.. i got it to work pretty easily..
I have twrp on this device and Pixel Experience ROM and it's working all fine..
But there's this one thing where when booting to recovery, it asks me to input a password for User(0) when i try to input anything it says password failed..
From reading the log, it says it's for decrypting data(8f I'm not mistaken)
Is this important? Do i need to decrypt it?
Currently the ROM works fine with no errors, so I'm not gonna bother, but would still like to know what this "decrypting" thing is..

Yes, If you use a lock screen enter that password it will be decrypted. You will have to format data if you decide to flash any other rom anyway.
flashed twrp but not able to boot into recovery.

There can be many reasons for that. Please tell me the error or what's actually happening. Then only I can be of help.

Hey buddy, thank you for this quick step-by-step guide. I flash ROMs since 2012 and you know what? It helped me the same. Having all stuff needed for go from stock to custom concentrated in one place (plus some useful tip like the Magisk flash at the end) it's always useful and time-saving. Thank you
2 Micro-notes about fastboot btw:
- write 'fastboot (with lowered 'f'): it may confuse some newbie
- it's 'reboot' instead of 'boot'
