Hi
Something occurred to me when watching an iphone owner answer a call the other day, the phone displays the actual area of the country (UK) that the caller is from as opposed to just the number.
After wondering how I never realised before jsut how useful this is I've been looking all over the place for a 3rd party who makes such an application but the only two I can find seem to be by pretty unreliable indian based developers.
If anyone can answer what apple use in ios to do this I'd be very interested in knowing because as its built into the firmware its got to be 99.9% reliable.
Thanks in advance..

TBH, I wouldn't hold out too hard
For some inexcusable reason, hardly any smartphones have voice dialling on them nowadays (just have a look at other HTC/S60 phones...)
Seems that they just don't want to do it for some reason
Personally, I'm from the UK where it is illegal to touch your phone whilst driving (and this law IS fully enforced), so I reckon the phone makers should come to an agreement to get bluetooth voice dialling on EVERY newly made handset that will retail above a given price point.
What irks me is that I used to have a Sony Erricson K750i, and it had BT voice dialling, and was a 'dumb-phone'
So quite why we don't have it yet, I don't know. I sure would love it though, and it might be worth tweeting @HTC about it, since that is their developer twitter feed.
BTW, it should be possible to use an app for voice dialling, but I've not found any that work well (ie. no screen presses needed. I can handle 'long-pressing' the call key, but don't want to have to look at the screen at all to make a call.)
I've read rumours that we'll have voice dialing in the upcoming update. Let's hope it's true.
I was running Android on my HTC Vogue (a WinMo device) for a year before the Hero came to Canada, and I was able to use voice dialing on that just fine with Cupcake. It was really annoying to find out that it's not in the Hero ROMs.
I'm not sure if there are any "vanilla" cupcake ROMS out there for the Hero, but if there is, they might have voice dialing enabled, since those ROMs would use the Android dialer, not the HTC dialer.
Ive done a few searches on this and im coming up stumped. Its been so long since i have been on the factory rom/kernel that i am curious if this particular feature is stock. When people call me from there cellphones, i am getting first and last names on the call display. This is quite possibly the best feature ever (for a used car salesman like myself). It doesn't appear to always show a name for some reason, but the majority of times it is. Is this something the xda community has built for the phones?
Are you saying that it is showing first and last name of people who are NOT already in your contact list?
Yah, This guy called me today from Edmonton, never met him in my life, was calling about a car ad. Ryan XxXxXx, I actually asked him if he was calling me from his cell because his full name was showing. He said Yes.
Doubt it's a phone feature. Check with your carrier.
I spend three months here in China and a month or two back in the UK in between. My phone is needed for work as much as personal use and I was given the choice of handset within a budget. I am with China Mobile. I am new to smartphones and their internal workings so apologies in advance if my questions are at a somewhat simplistic level. You might be interested to know that Sony themselves suggested I came here.
I have had my "S" for just under two weeks now. Smartphone number one for me. So far it has been a mixed bag of highs and lows. The product's design is very nice and all that I hoped it would be. As a music player it is excellent. I am yet to see how it performs as a video player. It surfs the net effortlessly, send messages on a keyboard that is a pleasure to use and has a screen that reminds me of my Bravia back home in the UK. Perfect. Battery life is improving all the time as well.
The lows are more to do with how the software has been created for the Chinese market. There is NOTHING on this phone to link it to Google at all. No apps. relating to Google, nothing. But then considering the relationship they both have, I should not be too surprised.
However, this creates problems for me. I checked that I could access Google Play in China before I bought the phone. I did this online. I can. Doing the same from my phone is different altogether. I cannot.
Sony feel that re-flashing the phone with a UK version of the software might help and at least allow me access to Google Play. So far I am hesitating to go down this route until I have more definitive answers from you experts.
I have saved the Google Play app. to the handset and tried to run it after a successful installation. It never even opens; it just goes back to the home screen.
With hindsight, it might have been sensible to have purchased a handset from the UK to save all these problems but then I may have had a problem of displaying Chinese characters on the phone. Although I speak Mandarin, reading and writing it is a different matter. But it is useful to have this facility when travelling around China as I do.
So, what are your thoughts on how I can start afresh and acquire a UK version of the software or at least a more international one that gives me a fighting chance of doing more with this phone?
I look forward to your advice.
Hello,
First of all, welcome to China. And hope you enjoy everything else except for this little glitch. For your peace of mind, there are two ways that I know to get Google services working, and they are almost harmless.
1. Flash Google services pack, this is the easiest and most problem-free way, but I'm not sure it's currently available with Xperia S or not
2. Flash a Hong Kong or world generic version ROM, which come with Google services pre-installed, and support for both simplified and traditional Chinese characters. To do this, you will need the ROM and a software called flashtool. You could do a search on this forum for the detailed guide.

Thank you.
So, I need Flashtool and a HK/UK ROM for the Xperia S.
Can someone confirm both of these are available before I render my phone useless?
A.
U can try doing an update as well... And see if theres any update that will fix the problem.
These are available and I used them to flash mine.

I have already used Sony's Update Service. However, even though I have little understanding of these devices, it would seem sensible for Sony to update only what is installed rather than adding bundles of software found in other countries. What are people's thoughts on this?
I have started to read about FlashTool and it seems more than complicated and risky. Everything is written for experts.
Also, it seems that the Xperia S (LT26i) is so new that FlashTool and a "ROM" might not be available yet.
Do keep the replies coming. I am learning all the time. I am hoping this forum is as good as Sony said it is.

So my ex girlfriend is convinced that I have somehow hacked her phone. (I haven't.) So much so that she drowned an HTC phone and got herself a new Droid Maxx. However she is still having the issues that led her on this paranoid delusion. I am looking for someone to help me explain to her she has not been hacked, or if I am wrong to correct me.
The story starts with her saying that her Facebook app on the phone is acting funny. Yeah the nebulous adjective, funny. When I asked her what does she mean by that she has various performance complaints as well as the app crashing at inopportune times. Setting aside such shaky evidence of somebody hacking a phone (because as you know, one thing a hacker does not want to do is let their victim know that they are inside their phone and thus shutting down the exploits they have already put in place) I am now seeking anyone who knows more about this than I do to help explain what she is seeing so that she stops accusing me of something I am not doing. To make matters worse ex-girlfriend decides to start monkeying around with things that she doesn't understand inside her phone settings and discovers something that I finally find to be odd but can't really explain away.
She went into her old phone (an HTC M8 I believe) account synch settings and sees the Facebook mobile number displayed as not her own. In fact it's not even a proper number. Here is a screen shot from the new phone (my memory says that a very similar result was on her old phone):
(Annnd Dammit since I am a fairly fresh user I cannot post a pic link, if you are trying to help me PM me and I think it'll let me pate you the link)
(Or I can try to put 5 spaces in the link to make it non working and if you have the patience copy it and take the spaces out to go to the screen shot)

The number listed is not even a complete number and does not come up in any useful way in Google searches. This odd number was on her previous HTC phone before she sent it for drowning and then her new Droid Maxx phone is showing the same thing.
As you know it's useless to go and ask Facebook for any sort of support seeing as how we are not their customers, we are actually the commodity they sell to advertisers so they could give a rat's ass about assisting their commodity. Remember when you don't pay for something then what is being sold is you.
I must add that she also has confirmed to me that when she signs in to Facebook in a browser on a PC she does not see her number replaced inside her profile. It seems really very odd to me how her mobile app still knows how to link with her regular profile when the number is not matching. I have an HTC One M9 and I do not have the same behavior as she reports. According to her she can still see her news feeds and friend posts and all that Facebook goodness. She says she has Avast running on the phone, and she does not install any software not obtained through the Google Play Store.
My research came up with not a very convincing theory. What I found was a dated forum post regarding a Facebook feature that had been discontinued. The feature being cited was like an address book feature that sought to synch the phone's address book and the Facebook Friends list and address book together. But the discussion did not quite match what I was observing so it is unconvincing that I found what the cause was.
Can anyone follow this story at all? Has her phone been hacked? Can anyone tell me a better place to post a question regarding this?
Hi members,
these days, my Galaxy tab SM-T705 broke down and I would like to get a similar, but up to date replacement. To be honest, I don't like to spend much time in evaluating all the different Android versions an manufactures and so on. So, my question would be, as the subject says: Which one brings the least amount of annoying bundled apps? And which one allows disabling or uninstalling most or all the manufacturer app, that are not really vitally necessary running Android?
Suggestion for a specific model or product line are welcome.
Thanks, Martin
