Root related information from Taiwan (root not achieve yet!) - Asus ZenFone 3 Deluxe Guides, News, & Discussion

Here are some more detailed information about rooting this device... However, this is not root... yet.
shakalaca from Asus forum in Taiwan is trying to find a way. However, I believe more people need to join this effort...
https://github.com/shakalaca/android_device_asus_zs570kl
I am not affiliate with shakalaca but just want to help. Any credit goes to shakalaca.

Someone had to start somewhere. Thanks for sharing the info.

Umm... isn't the source code available at the website right here?
I thought the source code is the main requirements for bootloader unlock... though I was sure that ASUS released an unlock tool for zenfone 2 too... so maybe it's likely that they will release similar software to zenfone 3 deluxe which will help us root the device

It might be your best bet for the near future. Until Asus releases the bootloader unlock tool for the phone, there is nothing we can do with it. When it's released, we should be able to get a custom rom on the phone pretty quickly since the source code for the phone is released.

I would agree. I think this phone is fantastic but with no official bootloader it really does stop the XDA community from seeing what this phone is about. Reading the Taiwanese Zentalk forums it looks like there's an unofficial way to root the phone but who wants to take that risk when everyone believes Asus will have an official release eventually.
Asus rolled this phone out at an odd time of the year and for most of the US, the phone has only officially been available just this month. Still, we need root in order to fix things that Asus is slow to handle ( LED/capacitive button control, external sound quality)

Source code released—what does this mean (for an Android n00b)

Hi
I saw a post in the dev section titled "Source code (Android kernel, Ubuntu) now available".
I saw it here and downloaded it in case it disappears:
https://opensource.motorola.com/sf/sfmain/do/go/rel1543?selectedTab=files
What does this mean for the Atrix now? Is this anything special or won't help us at all? Will it be easier for the devs to crack the bootloader?
I'm still up in the air on whether to buy this phone or not and I'm just waiting to see if more development is made on it to choose.
Bell has lowered the price of the phone by $100 until March 31st so I would like to make my decision before that time. Nexus S and Incredible S are also coming to Bell in April so I'm not sure what to do! But Atrix with unlocked bootloader is like unlimited potential!
Thanks,
Elliott
I too would like to know as well what his could mean to the Atrix. ANy one care reply?
please.
Here are the words from another member at this thread Source code (Android kernel, Ubuntu) now available
ikenley
It will make it easier for tweaks and optimization to occur without access to the bootloader.
It could also mean that there is a possibility for custom Roms for the truly gifted Developers who can do it without modifying the Kernel. Has happened for the Milestone and is currently being undertaken for the Milestone 2 (Droid 2)

Thanks I saw that too...
Ahhh I want to wait until the Incredible S and even the Nexus S but the thought of having a dual core proc that is very fast is tempting to me...knowing that these devices only have single cores they're not as future proof...but neither is the Atrix if no development is done on it.
I'm fairly sure the source wont disappear for android that is... the kernel stuff maybe? I think android is GPL'd so it has to be released after modification as part of the license.

I'm in the same boat as you. Even in Canada.
But I guess I'm going to take the plunge and get this phone I'm getting it tomorrow or the day after.
My reasoning is that there will be a new nexus by the end of the year. But I agree fully to what you said above. I wish Motorola made the Nexus S. I wish it was the atrix but an official google device. If only that happened.

I see this is the source code for the original retail version (OLYFR_U4_1.2.6). I noticed on there website they also released the source code for what looks like the newest build they have out getting beta tested right now (OSHWT_U1_4.257.14) I might be wrong on that, but if it is, it seems Motorola might be getting easier to work with.
Motorola Website source code >> OSHWT_U1_4.257.14 <<
**Edit** Looks like this is the Source Code for the 'Atrix Webtop'. My bad...

[Q] Will the Toshiba AT300 be rooted?

I have a great deal on a Toshiba AT300 at hand, brand new at just above half the retail price, but the internet told me it cannot be rootet yet . It's not a bit problem right now, but at some point it will be. One awesome thing to do with 1 gb RAM and a quadcore CPU is a chrooted Linux installation. Also, i don't want a device thats going to be obsolete because the community can't keep it updated and the company that build it in the first place rather wants to sell me a new one instead of providing upgrades for existing products.
So what are the odds that it will still be locked down in a year or so? What about other devices with locked bootloaders and similar market share, are they eventually broken, or should i just buy a more "mainstream" tablet with more active developers?
(Also, is this the right sub-forum to ask this qurestion?)

As this device has a limited audience I would not hold out hope. Many things will come into play here. The OEM will only update it has long as they HAVE to. You will not fund many if any custom ROMs for is here as it is not a great developer device due to the issue stated above.

Hello,
Any update on rooting the AT300?
Thanks
4 years have passed, any news regarding the root for this device?

Nougat is coming. In Beta now.

So apparently Nougat is in beta testing on the ZE552KL right now.
Here is the Zentalk link

Just figured I'd drop the info here. Hopefully the ZE570KL isn't far off either. I would rather just get 7.1 right off the bat on my Special Edition, but I wouldn't complain about 7.0 first. Anyone considering of joining or already in the beta program for their device?
And so is nougat for other devices. Guess what, some phones came with 7.0 preinstalled!
Seriously, please stay on topic, i.e. zs570kl

I saw that, but my excitement was tempered by the fact that the beta tester program is strictly for the ZE552KL not our Deluxe phones. Asus has yet to even provide the official unlock for the Deluxe while the ZE552KL already has it. This makes me wary including the news that the Deluxe user base will be smaller now since Asus recently chose not to make it officially available in Canada.
At this point, I'd rather have an official unlock to root our phones than Nougat to be honest.

I stated that it was for ZE552KL. Since it is in the same launch family as the ZE570KL, I see that as a related topic. Especially considering that Asus has already benchmarked the ZS570KL running Nougat. I doubt that the nougat release for our phone will need to go thru beta, but that is admittedly just speculation on my part.

Yeah, it sucks that is the only news that is barely even related to our device, and I did state that it was only for the ZE552KL, btw. The negative I see is that the beta program is supposed to run until January 31st, but that hardly means that a release can't come out before hand. Bootloader unlock would be nice but I would personally prefer Nougat first. Obviously I understand why you would prefer Root first though. Maybe we will get a Christmas surprise from Asus on both fronts, though I'm not going to hold my breath.

Disgusting treatment of EU Axon 7 users

Hi,
Some really bad news for anyone that's been unfortunate enough to purchase an A7 EU version.
I have contacted ZTEUK on FB messenger directly to ask about the Nougat update and this is their exact response.
"Hi Mike, Please keep an eye out on our social channels for any information regarding updates. We do not currently have plans to update to Nougat though this may change. Thanks, the ZTE UK team."
Taking into account the amount of EU phones out there this is beyond dreadful in terms of treatment, the question is, where do we go from here? I didn't want to bother rooting the phone, but is there any option left now it's possibly not getting the update at all?
No daydream, no patch fixes, no volume fix, the list goes on!!
How do we pressure ZTE into dealing with this, failing that what other options do we have?
Mike
Haha I doubt it, these customer reps have no idea.
There has been an extensive Nougat test going on as well as confirmations on twitter etc.
G Version will get Nougat.

I hope so, that brings some comfort, really the reps should not give throw away replies like that.
Thanks :good:
Don't worry, it just furthers the idea that global organization of ZTE is totally lacking, especially for their EU customers (far behind their american ones). Nougat was announced first by ZTE Germany back in November (originally planned for end of january) and is currently undergoing beta testing as far as I know. The thing is, ZTE Germany is apparently taking care of the dev for the G version but they officially supports only german customers, even if they kinda tried to create an "european" community. Other european branches (it's the case for ZTE france at least) of ZTE seem to be only PR posting advertisement on facebook/twitter. IMO, your rep just copy pasted the basic stonewalling response to this question and has either no information whatsoever or wanted to answer politely without getting carried away.
(If anyone has more info, feel free to correct me)
G Variant will sure get the Nougat Update soon, ZTE UK should know this too dont know why you got this answer from them. But if you G Variant user, follow ZTE Mobile Deutschland on Facebook
Coming from US nougat. There's still bugs, battery drain, etc. Issues that are in the release. I'd rather be back in MM honestly. A stable and complete release would've been better instead of releasing early due to demand. Just look up the issue with whatsapp. Millions of users and they didn't notice such a glaring bug.
I can say without a doubt in my mind that the Axon 2017G will also get Nougat. They are usually a little behind the US team with releases so I imagine it will probably be sometime in March
I wouldn't be surprised if you could just flash the bootstack and modem from LineageOS thread and flash A2017U system on top. I'm totally satisfied with LineageOS, so I'm not even thinking on doing that now or in the future.
The G Variant needs more time than us because they want to fix all founded bugs and increase the quality. like musicdjm said, it will release end feb. or beginning of march. zte could Release it in the end of January but there were too many bug, because of that they started a beta test phase and postponed the Release date

I have the US ZTE Axon 7 (A2017U) and updated to Nougat. What is the WhatsApp bug again? I haven't noticed anything but you can tell me and I will cry in a corner once I know. :crying:
@op When everything else fails, go to change.org and create a petition. The ASUS Zenfone 2 users did that and they are apparently getting the Nougat update in July.

[REQUEST] Custom ROMs for RS988 (US Unlocked)

Hello developers and LG G5 users,
I recently got the LG G5, and everything has been great! Performance is top-notch, display is stunning, and camera takes amazing pictures.
I have the RS988 model, which is the United States carrier unlocked model (not tied to any carrier). It is available at Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01DJE22C2/ref=cm_cr_arp_mb_bdcrb_top?ie=UTF8.
I ask with respect and courtesy, does anyone have plans for supporting this model with custom ROMs? I see that the H850 and H830 models are supported, but not the RS988. This model is officially supported by LG for a bootloader unlock, and a working TWRP build is available.
Again, I would like to ask if anyone has plans for supporting the RS988 model with a custom ROM. Fulmics o), Resurrection Remix, AOSPA, Dirty Unicorns, OwnROM, AICP, AOSPExtended, Lineage, ANTHING!
I could even do some light testing, and I'm sure other people feel the same way.
Sincerely,
An LG G5 RS988 user,

It would be nice, I have the same model. I was thinking about getting into Android development and working on this phone but that'll take a good while, most developers probably looked over this phone since it for unlockable so late and really I think stock is enough. I have it modified for my needs and it's alright. And you would think this model would get some development since it's not tied to a carrier but I guess not. If I find where to start and everything I might work on this device and of somehow I figure things out I'll be in development for at least 2-3 years for this device.
Please make custom ROM for rs988
You're to late Guys. The G5 is almost completely abdoned and the Most Devs (Who had a Choice) are gone. Outdated 7.0 Stock Firmware and a lack of good Sources are killing the Rest. Besides that is asking for any Development on it just crazy. You don't need to ask! If there is nothing, there will come nothing....
Never LG again! To many mistakes and not a piece Developer friendly at all. Try to sell Your G5 and You will See what i mean!
He's right about the lack of good sources I had an H830 and the roms for it take away useful features for the lg g5. And all have the same bugs. I tried them but kept going back to stock.
There used to be a time when custom roms made the phone better. That time seems to have passed, it is getting harder and harder to root carrier phones, not just lg.
The rs988 is a smooth running phone, with root we get full control of our phone. If you are not happy with that feel free to port over a rom, but please stop asking for dev support.
We are on our own with this phone.
I'm kinda glad this phone has been abandoned and looked upon so poorly.
I bought a brand new rs988 build date 3/17 for 249.00 B&H Photo about 6 weeks ago. The build quality is better, the screen is better, and no gps issues.
Since the Nougat update the phone is so much improved but if you don't like Nougat you can always downgrade back to marshmallow. (benefit of unlocked bootloader)
I bought genuine batteries from NewEgg recently for 5.99 a piece.
It's one of the few unlocked phones that work on Verizon.
But for me the "always listing" (just like the pixel) very few phones have that feature. The removable battery, the IR blaster, expandable storage are requirements.
If I need waterproofing I throw on my fre lifeproof I bought new for 20 bucks.
Just because something is hard doesn't mean it's not worth it. This phone has been given up on too quickly.
At the current price I wouldn't be surprised if some come back to it.
Peace
Yes, I understand everyone's thoughts about development stopping for the LG G5. I am rooted and the stock ROM is excellent, I was just simply inquiring about custom ROM status. Didn't mean to bug or annoy any developers. It would just be nice if there was support, that's all.

By the way, could you send me the link to this? That price is just insane. The lowest I've seen is $11 at Walmart.
Tbh even though I have an h850 I don't see development stopping for custom ROMs on G5, it's being worked on. Slowly yeah,it's summer time, can't expect anyone to give up on some holiday and enjoyment to tinker around. Most of the stuff is already there to support RS988. LineageOS is official for G5,Mokee is official for G5 (2 versions on both for now), besides NFC bug(that's being worked on and there's already a half working solution) Bluetooth bug (not syncing to some products but working) and video saving( just a matter of time when it will be fixed) G5 in general is a fully supported by custom ROMs.We have a lot of unofficial builds too. Getting an official build instead of unofficial one is an advantage not a deal breaker and building your own build isn't that hard anyway. I've studied that for 5 days and have a build for H850 already. And it just took me 5 days cause of my slow internet speed. So a negative attitude won't do any good, positive thinking, catlogs, sharing your findings, sharing your fixes, might see a change.

I'm on my phone now,but have some bookmarked on my laptop. When I get home I'll pass some. For starters search XDA and use Google building Android from source, plus go on LineageOS manifest GitHub. Repo sync first,it will take a while. By the way, you'll need a stronger PC or laptop if you want to build fast also Linux or osx or on Windows you'll need Linux in virtual PC. SSD drive recommend.

Don't get Me wrong. I've put much efforts into this Phone since i still think it's a good piece of Hardware. I'm also Out of Money so i have to stick with it. But it makes Me crazy sometimes as a Ex Samsung, HTC, SONY and Nexus User/Dev to have a LG.
-The Sources
-The Community (XDA)
-The Bootloader (Recovery Access, Bootloader Message)
-The Build Quality (Light Shadows on the Display, the bottom Gap, Volume Rocker Stucks)
And the most Important Thing - UPDATES
We are using a 2016 Flagship and No Android 7.1? Still?
What about Android 0? Do we get a real Update or just a Copy OS from the V20? Like with the actual/past Updates?
I'm really done with LG. That they ditched us with the Modules is another Big Point for Me as G5 User. I would at least be more happy with a V20 since it wasn't a Joke like the G5....
For those interested, the following LG G5 variants have the same FCC ID of ZNFVS987:
Code:
VS987 - Verizon Wireless variant
US992 - U.S. Cellular variant
RS988 - General North America variant
Presumably, the variants are of the same hardware, but have different firmware.
Okay, let's start with the basics. First we are going to make the device tree so at least devs without your phone version would try to build a custom rom ( non stock based) for rs988.
Following parts of this tutorial extract boot.img and share it here.

Then after that, following this tutorial we'll make your device tree.

OK, great! Thank you for starting the development train.
I am new to this kind of stuff, but I am willing to do it. Is have some knowledge of ADB/Fastboot and looking at partitions. So basically what I need to do is extract the boot.img from my phone, and then create a device tree for the phone. Where should I put the tree when it's done?

When all that is done, well then you or any other developer uses that tree with already synced repo from any of the custom ROMs along with the G5 repos to try and make a build.
First thing's first,to get a device tree. Building a rom from the source comes later, and luckily there's more than one tutorial on how to get it done. Then it's figuring out what doesn't work and how to fix it.
Source?
So I extracted boot.img, have the file. When I go to the link you gave me for creating a device tree, it says that I need the source code. Sorry if I'm acting like a noob, but where do I get that? Never mind, I figured out how to unpack the boot.img. I now have the basic files created, including AndroidBoard.mk, AndroidProducts.mk, etc. I just created the files that are listed in this tutorial (the one you gave me): https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010281
So I also found this on Github, which states that it is the device tree for the RS988: https://github.com/jcadduono/android_device_lge_rs988. I don't know if that is what you want me to make, and if it is, can we use that? If that isn't the right tree, I am currently on writing the BoardConfig.mk file, which is one of the steps in the tutorial mentioned above. it says to use a "cousin device" tree. What should I use for that?
Thanks
Thanks for this..
Again.. thanks for the heads up on how to get the ball rolling on this.. I should have some time to unlock my bootloader and post the boot.img and other necessary files this weekend..
Cheers!

Okay, let's start with the basics. First we are going to make the device tree so at least devs without your phone version would try to build a custom rom ( non stock based) for rs988.
Following parts of this tutorial extract boot.img and share it here.

Then after that, following this tutorial we'll make your device tree.
