Hello developers and LG G5 users,
I recently got the LG G5, and everything has been great! Performance is top-notch, display is stunning, and camera takes amazing pictures.
I have the RS988 model, which is the United States carrier unlocked model (not tied to any carrier). It is available at Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01DJE22C2/ref=cm_cr_arp_mb_bdcrb_top?ie=UTF8.
I ask with respect and courtesy, does anyone have plans for supporting this model with custom ROMs? I see that the H850 and H830 models are supported, but not the RS988. This model is officially supported by LG for a bootloader unlock, and a working TWRP build is available.
Again, I would like to ask if anyone has plans for supporting the RS988 model with a custom ROM. Fulmics o), Resurrection Remix, AOSPA, Dirty Unicorns, OwnROM, AICP, AOSPExtended, Lineage, ANTHING!
I could even do some light testing, and I'm sure other people feel the same way.
Sincerely,
An LG G5 RS988 user,

It would be nice, I have the same model. I was thinking about getting into Android development and working on this phone but that'll take a good while, most developers probably looked over this phone since it for unlockable so late and really I think stock is enough. I have it modified for my needs and it's alright. And you would think this model would get some development since it's not tied to a carrier but I guess not. If I find where to start and everything I might work on this device and of somehow I figure things out I'll be in development for at least 2-3 years for this device.
Please make custom ROM for rs988
You're to late Guys. The G5 is almost completely abdoned and the Most Devs (Who had a Choice) are gone. Outdated 7.0 Stock Firmware and a lack of good Sources are killing the Rest. Besides that is asking for any Development on it just crazy. You don't need to ask! If there is nothing, there will come nothing....
Never LG again! To many mistakes and not a piece Developer friendly at all. Try to sell Your G5 and You will See what i mean!
He's right about the lack of good sources I had an H830 and the roms for it take away useful features for the lg g5. And all have the same bugs. I tried them but kept going back to stock.
There used to be a time when custom roms made the phone better. That time seems to have passed, it is getting harder and harder to root carrier phones, not just lg.
The rs988 is a smooth running phone, with root we get full control of our phone. If you are not happy with that feel free to port over a rom, but please stop asking for dev support.
We are on our own with this phone.
I'm kinda glad this phone has been abandoned and looked upon so poorly.
I bought a brand new rs988 build date 3/17 for 249.00 B&H Photo about 6 weeks ago. The build quality is better, the screen is better, and no gps issues.
Since the Nougat update the phone is so much improved but if you don't like Nougat you can always downgrade back to marshmallow. (benefit of unlocked bootloader)
I bought genuine batteries from NewEgg recently for 5.99 a piece.
It's one of the few unlocked phones that work on Verizon.
But for me the "always listing" (just like the pixel) very few phones have that feature. The removable battery, the IR blaster, expandable storage are requirements.
If I need waterproofing I throw on my fre lifeproof I bought new for 20 bucks.
Just because something is hard doesn't mean it's not worth it. This phone has been given up on too quickly.
At the current price I wouldn't be surprised if some come back to it.
Peace
Yes, I understand everyone's thoughts about development stopping for the LG G5. I am rooted and the stock ROM is excellent, I was just simply inquiring about custom ROM status. Didn't mean to bug or annoy any developers. It would just be nice if there was support, that's all.

By the way, could you send me the link to this? That price is just insane. The lowest I've seen is $11 at Walmart.
Tbh even though I have an h850 I don't see development stopping for custom ROMs on G5, it's being worked on. Slowly yeah,it's summer time, can't expect anyone to give up on some holiday and enjoyment to tinker around. Most of the stuff is already there to support RS988. LineageOS is official for G5,Mokee is official for G5 (2 versions on both for now), besides NFC bug(that's being worked on and there's already a half working solution) Bluetooth bug (not syncing to some products but working) and video saving( just a matter of time when it will be fixed) G5 in general is a fully supported by custom ROMs.We have a lot of unofficial builds too. Getting an official build instead of unofficial one is an advantage not a deal breaker and building your own build isn't that hard anyway. I've studied that for 5 days and have a build for H850 already. And it just took me 5 days cause of my slow internet speed. So a negative attitude won't do any good, positive thinking, catlogs, sharing your findings, sharing your fixes, might see a change.

I'm on my phone now,but have some bookmarked on my laptop. When I get home I'll pass some. For starters search XDA and use Google building Android from source, plus go on LineageOS manifest GitHub. Repo sync first,it will take a while. By the way, you'll need a stronger PC or laptop if you want to build fast also Linux or osx or on Windows you'll need Linux in virtual PC. SSD drive recommend.

Don't get Me wrong. I've put much efforts into this Phone since i still think it's a good piece of Hardware. I'm also Out of Money so i have to stick with it. But it makes Me crazy sometimes as a Ex Samsung, HTC, SONY and Nexus User/Dev to have a LG.
-The Sources
-The Community (XDA)
-The Bootloader (Recovery Access, Bootloader Message)
-The Build Quality (Light Shadows on the Display, the bottom Gap, Volume Rocker Stucks)
And the most Important Thing - UPDATES
We are using a 2016 Flagship and No Android 7.1? Still?
What about Android 0? Do we get a real Update or just a Copy OS from the V20? Like with the actual/past Updates?
I'm really done with LG. That they ditched us with the Modules is another Big Point for Me as G5 User. I would at least be more happy with a V20 since it wasn't a Joke like the G5....
For those interested, the following LG G5 variants have the same FCC ID of ZNFVS987:
Code:
VS987 - Verizon Wireless variant
US992 - U.S. Cellular variant
RS988 - General North America variant
Presumably, the variants are of the same hardware, but have different firmware.
Okay, let's start with the basics. First we are going to make the device tree so at least devs without your phone version would try to build a custom rom ( non stock based) for rs988.
Following parts of this tutorial extract boot.img and share it here.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=45721523&postcount=1
Then after that, following this tutorial we'll make your device tree.

OK, great! Thank you for starting the development train.
I am new to this kind of stuff, but I am willing to do it. Is have some knowledge of ADB/Fastboot and looking at partitions. So basically what I need to do is extract the boot.img from my phone, and then create a device tree for the phone. Where should I put the tree when it's done?

When all that is done, well then you or any other developer uses that tree with already synced repo from any of the custom ROMs along with the G5 repos to try and make a build.
First thing's first,to get a device tree. Building a rom from the source comes later, and luckily there's more than one tutorial on how to get it done. Then it's figuring out what doesn't work and how to fix it.
Source?
So I extracted boot.img, have the file. When I go to the link you gave me for creating a device tree, it says that I need the source code. Sorry if I'm acting like a noob, but where do I get that? I found this link: http://opensource.lge.com/osSch/list?types=NAME&search=lgrs988, but I don't know if I should use it.

Never mind, I figured out how to unpack the boot.img. I now have the basic files created, including AndroidBoard.mk, AndroidProducts.mk, etc. I just created the files that are listed in this tutorial (the one you gave me): https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010281
So I also found this on Github, which states that it is the device tree for the RS988: https://github.com/jcadduono/android_device_lge_rs988. I don't know if that is what you want me to make, and if it is, can we use that? If that isn't the right tree, I am currently on writing the BoardConfig.mk file, which is one of the steps in the tutorial mentioned above. it says to use a "cousin device" tree. What should I use for that?
Thanks
Thanks for this..
Again.. thanks for the heads up on how to get the ball rolling on this.. I should have some time to unlock my bootloader and post the boot.img and other necessary files this weekend..
Cheers!

Hey guys I was wondering is there any upcoming Oreo roms coming to the G5? Because I was snooping through the G3 forums and found a OREO rom for the G3 not 100% working but they have a rom on there so anything upcoming to the G5 guys? I know it sounds very very demanding but im really excited to use this new update or a new rom to the G5

No doubt oreo roms are coming up and since I also developed some roms I am 100% sure some oreo custom roms already exists but are disclosed for the developer himself to test and fix the issue. As you might know devs don't like to give users very experimental stuff. But you might have seen the oreo changes under the hood as one of the big things: Project Treble. (See this link for more without having to dig in google itself https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/09/android-8-0-oreo-thoroughly-reviewed/2/#h1 So other devices also have issues like bluetooth, camera and so on not working but I'm sure official oreo roms will come out within a period of 1-2 months as some phones already almost have fixed all oreo bugs like the HTC M10. Don't want to wait? Compile it yourself and contribute to the community if some devs aren't working on it already due to their lives/families I don't know whether LG G5 will reach oreo despite its age we all know how good manufacturer can be look at oneplus their software support for the oneplus 2 for instance. And the LG G5 is officially supported by LineageOS 15.0 if I'm correct. So just a little more patients

I have the US998 unlocked version purchased from B&H. At the time of purchase, I envisioned a day when, thanks to the efforts and talent of the dev community, I could load a pure version of the latest Android OS (like the PIxel 2 runs). Unlike other Android devices I've owned, albeit before the bootloader lock down trend started, where rooting and loading a huge variety of ROMs was common, the V30 seems to have relatively little dev following. Maybe that's a misconception and I'm not being patient enough. Does this community of LG V30 owners think dev interest will eventually gain momentum and we may see a stock Android version for our phones?

Check LineageOS github, the h930/joan-common trees are working, except that vibrator/nfc dont work as intended (and atleast for me, it only boots in 1 out of 15 cases, didnt find other testers willing to try...)
Rest should be fine... would use it as daily driver, but i miss the haptic feedback too much for it (and i dont reboot my phone that often either)
Tried the past week to get the vibrator running atleast... and it has all the necessary files ( i think, atleast it aint complaining), but some switch to turn it on is missing

I'm curious. What good would some self-hacked Treble do unless LG gives it to us? LG isn't going to say, "Oh XDA users made a Treble for V30. We'll use that to give them faster updates." No, they will keep giving us updates THEIR way.
Tell me what else Treble is good for? Nothing for the V30, that I can think of.
Treble is designed to theoretically give faster updates from the manufacturer/carrier. Treble only affects custom ROMs and devs if you have bootloader unlocked device with a way to get root. And right now those are open market US998 V30, European H930, and European H930G -- because those are the ones approved by LG. And those already have ROMs, TWRP, etc because they are bootloader unlocked and have full flash commands.
So...
Self-hacked Treble won't help the variants that don't have bootloader unlock and/or full flash commands.
And Treble would only help the three LG Developer website variants by possibly giving them AOSP ROMs. At the expense of losing quad DAC and AI camera functionality.
Please tell me what I am not understanding or missing?
We can, and we will, eventually ?
First need to find out what causes my los15.1 to be so unstable (the rest all works... cam, nfc, audio, ril, bt, wifi,...)
Have the same problem on all aosp based roms (tried LOS and GZOSP so far), so its either device tree, blobs or kernel fault
afterwards i can try to get a real vendor partition (repartitioning basically, possible on the g6/5/v20, so hopefully for us too)
And then some Treble, after i haxed some blobs that force link to /system instead of using the linker ... ? (e.g. vibrator has 2 libs that do that, and some others that search configs only in /system/etc )
Atleast thats the plan so far....
I personally dont care about the AI cam, but DAC is possible, with enough work, according to rashed atleast ?

I own the US998 and I want to get high pitches to get AOSP ROMs (I believe many people would also like to get). I don't have the ability to get it. But I am looking forward to it! In the future there will certainly be an AI camera running on Aosp (perhaps not as good as LG). The DAC will also have a balance, maybe.

This is EXACTLY what Treble is good for, but you misunderstand. On a device that natively supports Treble, it is insanely easy to build AOSP with everything working just like the stock ROM.
Now, on a phone that you can hack it in, if you get it working ONCE, then you can pretty much upgrade to new versions of AOSP and still have a fully functional phone -- THAT is why you would want to convert a phone to Treble. Hack hard once, and enjoy it for the long run
You are correct that you need a rooted phone to take advantage of it. Even phones that ship with Treble are pretty much useless -- because as you said, they still don't ship updates in a timely manner, and if you don't have an unlocked bootloader with full fastboot, then you won't be getting AOSP.
Treble is awesome, don't think that it isn't. However, it is only awesome on developer friendly phones.
TL;DR: Hacking in Treble support on the H930/G and US998 is most definitely worth the effort in the long run. You can bet your rear that I will be hacking it into the V20 *IF* LG doesn't break the engineering aboot with the Oreo update.

also something about repartitioning ?

You said it in a way better than me.
I'm very skeptical Treble will give much faster updates from carriers/OEMs to non-rooted phones, when they have no financial incentive to provide faster updates. In fact, one regional carrier I used to be with basically said "You want a new OS, then you need buy a new phone."
Yep .. disposable phones.
Hopefully in Treble 2.0, Google will require an update mechanism be in place for users to pull (or Google to push) OS updates directly. Then having a rooted phone is just a bonus, but not needed to get timely updates.
If you look at the updates that are pushed to phones currently, the firmware is actually updated very rarely, and it is mainly the modem.

Never done anything with custom roms or rooting before, but I am getting sick an tired of the design, functionality, bloatware, and stability of the default LG rom on my LG V30. I'm also upset with LG's abandonment of the device. They've made multiple devices in order to bury the LG V30. It took months to get 8.0, and not the promised 8.1, and now I fear I'll never see it.
I've looked at DotOS, and I really like the design and features of the rom, and there's the fact that I'll actually get updates. What should I do? Should I attempt the installation of DotOS on my device, or should I stay away to avoid bricking it?
Are the few lost features worth the many new ones?
Where should I start in learning how to do this stuff safely?
I planned on using on old android device in order to "practice", but read that the firmware/software used by AT&T Samsung Galaxy S6 isn't able to be bootloader unlocked. so seems like I can't do that anymore.
Thanks

If you never rooted before, you have to read a lot before taking chances. There is always the risk of bricking your device. That being said, root gives you a lot of freedom to customize way beyond what stock allows. And you definitely will be able to update after LGs expiration date goes by. And there are lots of guides and help. @chazzmat has contributed a lot on this and many others here. And if you do your homework before dipping in you will probably do fine.

AT&T? Do you have a H931? If yes, AOSP based ROMs will only bootloop on your device :/

What model variant do you have? For instance just Frankenstein converting any of the eligible North America carrier variants to carrier unlocked US998 model will remove most bloatware right there -- as it doesn't have any carrier bloatware.
Sure there's still stuff like LG Health, Facebook and Instagram -- but I do use LG Health. With root you can remove or freeze (with Titanium Backup) what do not want. Root gives you real "ownership", even if you don't install custom ROMs.
Also note the difference between stock-based ROMs and AOSP/LOS based ROMs.
As part of being the Google Enterprise Recommended program, LG had to commit to giving at 90 day updates for three years. This requirement kicked in once on Oreo. Yes the updates will probably mostly be the most recent Android security update, but the last US998 (20B) included silent notification fix. If you want to see abandonment, see what happens to the G7 and V35 which don't have that guarantee. Here's all the Google Enterprise Recommended program, if you are curious. For LG, it's only the V30 and G6.

Stay current with updates
Android Enterprise Recommended helps ensure devices are up to date with regular security patches delivered within 90 days (for 3 years, it says elsewhere).
Android Enterprise Recommended devices are also guaranteed to get at least one additional major OS update

We'll probably get P (Pistachio?) but it'll probably be next summer. The Google Enterprise Recommended program also calls for at least one major OS letter update. I don't think LG can count the Nougat to Oreo upgrade, because they had to be on Oreo anyway to be on the Enterprise Recommended list.
Yes, we were promised 8.1 as part of the Google business program announcement, and it was 8.0. I don't know why.
I can't see LG giving both 8.1 and P to all their V30 models by next summer, so you're probably right you won't see 8.1 on stock unrooted firmware. But ROMs, even the stock-based ones can add features or fix problems.
With LG, their Korean carrier variants get all updates first (since all models are released there first), then trickle around the rest of the world. Once the Korea carrier variants got 8.0, nobody else was getting 8.1 until the Korea variants then get 8.1 (or whatever comes next for the V30).
As Oreo rolled out around the world for the V30, some people were breathlessly waiting to see if THEY would somehow magically get 8.1. No, LG doesn't change like that. To do that, they would have to cancel the scheduled round of updates, and start all over again with the Korean carrier variants -- rolling out 8.1 to them first. India, of course is last, because the V30 series was released there last.

Yes l, I have an H931, but I've read that if I convert to US998 I can still do it.

Yes, actually you HAVE to convert to US998 to do it, so you have the requisite fastboot flash commands.
If for some reason you can't install AOSP ROMs on your converted H931>US998 ( @SGCMarkus knows more about his ROMs than I do, so I defer to him), there's still stock-based custom ROMs you can install which have improvements/fixes -- like Boombox and A.I.S. @SGCMarkus even made one, but it seems it's not been updated recently as he probably spends all his waking moments keeping about half a dozen AOSP ROMs updated! He's a one-man army.
He also is responsible for our updated TWRP.
you can install aosp roms on the converted h931, but the problem is that they will bootloop for some reason.
same for the h933 if i remember correctly

Well I'll be sure to build a shrine for him if I ever go through with this lol. Thanks for the info.
Root: yes
Custom Rom: not necessarily.
Once you properly debloat it's a different experience already.

If you havent rooted yet there's a temporary solution that i can provide which i am personally using.
Regarding the bloatware and ui etc.
1. Get the app Package disabler pro, disable all the bloatware u want.U can disable anything and everything, even the camera , messaging app, dialer etc.
2. replace all the stock apps or whichever u want, with any other custom apps like the dialer, or messaging app or the launcher etc.
3. for overcoming monotony keep changing the themes and wallpapers
I'm building LineageOS 14.1from source, and it's 3 But none the less moving EVER so slowly but surely still progressing. I was hoping someone here might be able to extract proprietary blobs for me, or coach me through it. I FINALLY, JUST got done with repo sync. And reading through the tutorial is like trying to decipher a new language, while controlling traffic while in extremely dense fog... Some light please?
Am I going to see your ROM someday? When?

@Blacknes. You're probably the most knowledgeable person I can ask about this now. Hope you don't mind. I had a V521 several years ago but broke it and have been using Nexus 7 debs since then. So, I've forgotten a lot. I recently bought a mint V521, because it's faster, better display, and better battery. It's on stock V521 20n OS and I want to root it and install TWRP before deciding on a custom ROM, if ever. I understand that I have to roll back the OS to 20h or 20f in order for dirty cow to root it. I've tried LGUP several times and it errors out. Can you help? Thanks
