Did you remove the stock screen protector? - LG G5 Questions & Answers

It's been two years since I have purchased a phone but is it safe to assume the "screen protector" is only intended for shipping purposes or is this an actual screen protector LG added so you don't have to buy one and install one if you wanted?

safe to remove
in fact the one that came with my phone had some printings on it
so I would advise to remove it and if you know you are careless and usually drop/scratch your phone, would suggest getting a tempered glass one

do you think it was intended for shipping purposes or is this considered an actual protective screen cover? It seems super glossy to me which would lead me to guess it's only there to protect it from shipping and handling etc..

It differs per country and provider. In the Netherlands I have used it for somewhat like two months and was working very fine.

I just got my phone, and it has one on there. It's not bad, but I never liked the way they feel. But then again, I feel the same way about cases. I bought it to enjoy the feel of it, not to hide it all. Of course every couple of phones, it comes back to haunt me as I watch it fall to the ground, lol...

just figured out it must be the gorilla glass.. I'm not really a fan but since it's already installed I'm going to leave it on.. it smudges really bad...

Scratch on Screen

I have a screen protector on my phone and I accidentally had my phone and keys in my pocket and it made a small scratch through the screen protector on the phone. Does toothpaste work or is that an urban legend? Or should I try some of those Displex (or whatever it is called) products that take scratches off LCD screens (although I am not sure if it works well on touch screens), or if I need a replacement screen. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

If the scratches are fine, you can put a Zagg cover or similar vinyl-type cover on it. The soft vinyl fills in superficial scratches so well, you can't see them. If the scratches are deep & catches your fingernail, you probably have to replace the screen. I have seen the toothpaste trick used to buff car headlights, but I have no idea how well it works on a phone. If the scratches are deep & you're looking at replacing it anyway, you could try toothpaste since you really have nothing to lose. Good luck
The scratch is pretty small, my fingernail does not catch to it. What do you mean by Zagg cover? Like, one of their screen protectors or another product? I am going to a Verizon store to see if they might have any options or if they can to touch it up there, but I do not think they will be too much help so I look to XDA for advice, ha.

Go to Best Buy & ask for a Zagg screen shield. They should have it for Tbolt by now. They're a pain to install, so you might consider paying the extra $10 or so to have the rep install it for you. That way, if it's not to your liking they'll redo it for no extra charge (even if they must open another package). Vinyl screen covers are soft & pliable and fill in superficial scratches kinda like a thick liquid, unlike cheap stiff screen covers. I did this with a phone that had some very fine scratches & areas that had rubbed against a case or something, and it all disappeared with the Zagg cover.

Zagg screen protectors are great have used them on my last three phones . A little expensive but worth it (19.99 @ best buy) life time replacement and very hard to scratch. Not to hard to put on just like doing window tint. They are soft so they do occasionally stretch but keep the application kit and just rinse it off and reapply .
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Hmm, I might try the Zagg option since it seems to be the best option - are there any other things I can try or look into?
Do not use scratch remover you can easily do more damage than the scratch on it now . I have seen friends use it only to mess up their screen more .
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
I see, I was worried because I know on LCD screens you can use scratch removers, but with touch screen phones I was afraid of if it would do more damage like you said. The more I look, I feel like I can sort of feel it slightly with my fingernail - it is one of those scratches that on a white screen you can see the multiple colors as you slowly turn the phone (hopefully I am describing this correctly because I normally stick at describing stuff). The screen protector is still on but I can tell this went through (my keys were in my pocket with my phone for like 3 seconds and when I realized this, I think in my panic to take the keys out so they wouldn't scratch the screen, I scratched the screen... Ugh, ha). Would that Zagg protector still be able to cover that sort of scratch?
You will proly still have some color distortion but it won't be as bad as what you see now. And a $20 vinyl screen cover is much cheaper than replacing the whole glass...unless you have a friend in the phone repair business.

Thanks for your help! I am going to go to the Verizon store within the next hour or so and ask their opinion, and then go over to Best Buy and look at the Zagg... Would something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Verizon-HTC-Thunderbolt-Digitizer-Engraving/dp/B004ULQH34 be something I could do myself and replace, or would I need a Verizon or other phone retailer to install it for me?

That is a new screen, not just a cover. You could install that yourself if you know what you're doing, but that means completely disassembling the phone & reassembling it. You might have a hard time finding a phone repair shop to do it, since you'd be asking them to use parts you bought online. Most places won't mess with parts bought from another retailer, and they are even more unlikely to warranty it. Verizon will definitely refuse to touch it. If you decide to replace the glass, just ask around for a good phone repair shop and pay them for everything (parts & labor) so you can get a warranty.

Naked DNA? No problem.

Some reasons I like to have a naked phone are that it looks better, is easier to grip, and saves money by not buying the accessories. I'm going to go with no case and no screen protector because I'll be purchasing the DNA at Best Buy with their insurance. It's $10/month with no deductible, and no limit on replacements/repairs. After 1 replacement it becomes a better deal than any other insurance, and it will be reassuring knowing I can always have a fairly new DNA in hand. The only thing it doesn't cover is Lost/Stolen, so if you think that might happen to you I wouldn't recommend this route. I have my renters insurance to fall back on if my phone happens to get stolen.
I would l be interested to hear your opinions on what you will be doing with your phone when it comes to cases/protection.
Only case I'd consider is a extended battery pack or one that has those integrated SD/USB card in it.
What is the deductible on your renters insurance? Mine is a 1000 so no way I would claim a lost phone.

250, which isnt outstanding but is better than 600 for retail. i typically typically break phones rather than lose them anyways
Isn't there some sort of coverage if purchased under American Express or another credit card?
I may put Ghost Armor on the screen, but I definitely have Assurion protection. No case.
I never put cases on my phones. Mine will be naked (should arrive today). I can't imagine covering this beauty with some POS silicone. No screen protector either.

I feel the same way. I went naked on my Thunderbolt with the exception of the screen protector that I had on it since day 1, but after removing it the display looks so much clearer.
I always use use a case, as I tend to drop devices and they get scratches. I HATE scratches.
Never really understood the whole screen protector idea. The glass is not going to get scratched by 99.9% of the stuff people do to their phone. And if that 0.1% thing happens, a thin film of plastic is not going to prevent it. But people buy them, then see the protector get scratched (duh, it's a plastic film) and think "oooh that saved my phone".
Understood on the cases, but I still never put a case on my phone. A few scratches in the phone will happen so I don't care about that, and any case which would prevent real damage to the phone is so bulky it defeats the purpose of having a nice thin form factor phone.
To me it's akin to people who put a bra on their car and never take it off. Sure, put it on for a road trip so you avoid some dings, but if you never take it off when you get home, then you never see the real car again. Why do you need to protect something you'll never see again?
No case. No screen protector. No insurance.
Dropped one phone in the last twelve years.
Basically, I'm getting this phone for the looks of it.
And I want to be reminded every day that the display is currently the best available.
My usage and lifestyle is fine with the battery life and storage on this device.
With corning glass 2 is a protector really necessary?

I would like to say I could pull this off, but I cant. Historically speaking there's been a couple times I left my phone on my lap while driving, then getting out of the car you know what happens. Stuff like that may only happen every 5 months or so, but I want to be covered for my occasional clumsiness. Every phone I have owned (iphones and androids) has had something break in one way or another.

Yes. At least for me, I carry my phone in my pocket. I live in Denver, so no sand from the beaches, and I have had two phones with Gorilla Glass that have gotten the little micro scratches from somewhere. I NEVER put my keys in the same pocket as my phone, and generally take good care of them, but the FACT is, if you want the highest resale value for the phone, protect it. If you don't then don't.
i love a naked phone. my dna wont have anything on it either! love the feel of the naked screen! and also maybe a pouch case to keep protected in my pocket like my s3 but nothing when i use it
I ended up going with the same case I had for my GNex. It was the combo holster/case from Verizon. I used mine a ton because of the flip out kickstand built into the case. I don't use the holster since it goes into my pocket, but I enjoy the case.

It is not uncommon for people to put on an additional screen protector, on top of the original sheet it comes shipped with.
Since original anti-shatter sheet (the one it comes applied with when you buy it new) is a lot harder to replace than those aftermarket screen protectors, I recommend that you buy and apply 3rd party protector.
Avoid the super thick ones, and you would hardly realise the difference in performance or looks, if applied correctly.
Once is a while, change it and you have a slightly refreshed screen

There isn't any protectors that doesn't get scratched "somehow". As @jewelkobayashi mentioned, just get a 3rd party protector and let it get scratched and change them from time to time for a refreshed skin.
If you go naked and let the Sony flim get scratched, it's quite a hassle to change (probably has to visit Sony Service Centre) and when you change your handset and you want to sell it away, your set may fetch lower amount because of that

Tiny bit of the anti-shatter screen protector burning off?

As you can see from the picture, there's a little spot on the phone. It appeared there about 2months ago and never went away/got any bigger so I concluded it's part of the anti shatter film deteriorated? I was in HK when this happened!
Has this happened to anyone else?

Can you not provide a clearer picture? It is far too blurry.
Should you still have valid warranty I'm sure Sony won't mind replacing the screen protector.

Sorry i think what's app compressed the image so it's not that good (i used another person's phone to take the pic then send it to me through what's app). But i will try get a better picture later
But it's not that big of a deal for me, it's definitely not a situation where i want to get a new phone, I'm just curious as to if it happened to other people or not.

Yep happened to many. its the anti-finger print coating. It comes off very quickly.
Everyone that had this happen to now puts a screen protect on it. It will get worse... so bad that you'll send it back.

Though I understand why Sony uses an anti shatter film I cannot understand why they made them so soft? Within 24 hours of indoor use on my XZ I could see minute scratches.
I Ordered the same time I ordered the Ultra some screen protectors but they have not arrived yet. That bloomin shatter proof film has been a real pain in the butt for so many owners. Removing it voids the warranty here. Two plastic protective covers certainly causes picture deterioration. No way in hell would I use a pencil on the standard soft anti shatter film though.
Sony tend to get so close to producing near perfect devices then nearly always drop the ball on some silly trivia. Very odd company?
Ryland
I actually read last week that Sony is required by Japanese law to use anti-shatter films on their handheld devices so people don't get hurt when they shatter. I'm not sure if this is indeed true, but i read it twice last week (can't remember where i read it though, but it was on tech site).
I've had my ultra several months now and as of now, the screen protector is just as it was from day one. Lucky me!
It is, however, a fingerprint magnet!

Maybe this one..
About the shatter proof film, it is Japanese legislation, they put it because it is required. They dont have to do that for phones sold outside Japan but they chose to do it anyway (maybe because they dont like lawsuits from people who got their pockets full of tiny pieces of razor sharp glass) with few exceptions (like the international model of Z Ultra, the film would kinda ruin the use of pencils as stylus)

I removed the screen protector on mine a while back, and its much better. The touchscreen works better, the feel of glass is nicer and its far more scratch resistant. The only downside is that without a proper oleophobic coating I need to apply rain-x every couple of weeks or the screen picks up smudges. :good:

I got a highly annoying scratch in the middle of the screen on the factory protector after just three days that was very visible when the screen was on. I never put protectors on my phones and I never get scratches after months of use.
So I removed the protector and go naked from now on as I always do.
Supposedly Sony replace for new anti shatter protector after each repair is that correct? As I asked for mine to be changed and Ok they said yes. So if that's the case why did people remove the anti shatter film and just void their warranty instead of getting Sony to change it. Plus I had problems with my Usb port and Usb cover so sending it off tomorrow

some people prefer the feel of the glass. also, its a HUGE fingerprint magnet (more than any pure glass ive ever used).
im in the middle of removing mine right now. its incredibly tedious and annoying, but itll be worth it once i get my glass-m on it!
:good:
Or put the glass m over the top and not void warranty. It may be a finger print magnet I no that. But I'd rather wipe it and carry on instead of spending about a scary tedious 2-3 hours taking it off voiding warranty just for some finger prints. Just my opinion but still. I gotta send mine off hopefully tomorrow though. I hope they fix my problems without charging me etc.

Just finished. Took a little under an hour. I had some scratches on the screen, so I didn't wanna spend $40 on a screen protector to place over the scratches. Also, I've read about screen distortion and reduced sensitivity when placing a protector over the stock ASP. I know not everyone experiences it, but with my luck, I would... Lol. I hope you get yours taken care of fast and at no charge, mate.

Tempered glass screen protectors [INDIA]

Okay, guys, I don't know how it's not mentioned even though we know they are the best screenguards out there.
Here are some I found over eBay :
http://www.ebay.in/sch/ScratchGuard...3/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=moto+e+tempered+glass
Surely, they are not Spigen's or Orzly's or of some known brand, in fact I confirmed and got a reply that it's made in China and is generic but equally strong and the cuts are nicely made.
Do you think buying it is worth it?
I mean, they're not really expensive at all.
Has anybody bought any of them ?
Btw, when I searched, I found out that Orzly has also made a tempered glass screen protector for our phone but, obviously, it ain't available in India.
i wanted to buy a glass screen protector. can any one suggest one?? there are tons on flipkart which one i should get?? any brand to look for??
Ordered one from ebay. From what I extensively searched, it seems Corning glass is fracture resistant, not necessarily scratch-resistant. There are conflicting views on either sides. I just thought better safe than sorry. Also, I have had a pretty bad expierence with screen-guards. Scratch easily. And the tempered glass is not so costly either, although it is unbranded. Got this one.
In the ebay list, I chose this one cuz its got the maximum sales. Regards to other ones, they either seem confused if its meant for iphone or moto e, or the thickness they mention is inconsistent(0.3/0.26/0.4) or have less sales. I had no other criteria for selection since its unbranded. Hoping for the best.

I already bought a matte one before these came out.
And, it has already started showing scratches. I don't think it's gonna last over a month.
Anyway, do tell us about your experience and if you don't mind, share a few photos too, of how it looks, how much thick it gets, etc.

Would it be possible for you to post a few pictures, and maybe answer these questions :
1. Is it actually oleophobic? (prevents oil and fingerprints)
2. Did bubbles come up while putting it on?
3. Has it affected the resolution?
4. Does touch feel the same? Or worsens?

1. Definitely not oleophobic. In fact, seems to be a fingerprint magnet.2. Yes, bubbles did come up, but since one can take it off, I managed to try it on about 3 times. 3. Not affected touch at all, nor the screen quality. 4. I would post a few pics, but it wont show a thing. its not at all visible.
