It was repeated all over in the G5 section, the only unlockable version is the european H850.
Also the H830 has root and twrp, but these are the only two models.
Thats dumb.

One has to realize that the developers who courageously "get root" for us do so on their own time. Not only that, on their own dime as well. In the trial and error process of unlocking the bootloader the risk of nuking their devices is high (and quite a few developers have nuked this model and others). And they go and buy another, so they can continue development. This gets very expensive.
And most importantly, with devices like the G5 - it takes time.
So while it's easy for one to respond "that's dumb", etc - I guess the above points are completely disregarded. Or perhaps not even known in the first place.
Most importantly, we are at the will of the developers. If they feel they are being disrespected, amongst other things - it would not be unreasonable for them to halt development. Please keep all of this in mind.

I understand all that they go through and are doing and i appreciate it, i meant no disrespect. Im just saying its dumb that lg doesnt let you unlock the bootloader. I came from a moto x 2014 and all i had to do to unlock the bootloader was sign up on a website and do some other stuff.

At this point, the h830 and h850 are the only models that can be rooted due to being able to unlock the bootloader.
Hey guys, just one question for those of you who already have root. Didn't want to open a new thread.
When using Nova launcher, are you able to unlock the phone without it requesting a pin to be entered?
I really need this answer, going nuts with a stock launcher

Under Lockscreen I selected "None" and never have to enter a pin - I do use Nova, but I'd assume it would be the same with any launcher? Unless I'm completely missing the point here

First of all thank you for responding
Well the point is, with LG stock launcher you can set up pin protection but it works in conjunction with the fingerprint reader meaning that when you unlock the screen with fingerprint phone is not asking for a pin entry. You are however able to double tap to power the screen and then enter pin to unlock if for some reason you do not want to use reader.
Let me ask again Are you able to do mentioned above with Nova and root? Can you maybe test for me

Good grief, what a pain to set that up
Sometimes I can unlock it by just touching it with the finger I set up, but other times I get "Unable to use fingerprint" and have to use the pin. I'd say it's about 50/50
No idea why it sometimes works and other times doesn't, but I'm removing the lock again now ... way too much hassle

Hey man, I'm also using Nova Launcher on my LG G5 H860 (no root tho - obviously - woe is me!), and I use the finger print scanner AND a pattern. I think LG suspect that the fingerprint scanner alone is not enough security, so they make us use a pattern or pin on top of that. At least that's my guess since I was immediately prompted to add the pin, password or pattern after setting up my fingerprints. Also, upon rebooting, EVERY TIME I have to put in my pattern. The fingerprint alone is not enough to gain access.
I'm guessing it would depend on the ROM you use, not particularly the launcher. But let us know how you go... Have you rooted yet?
Nice avatar BTW. \m/

It's actually a backup option I think, in case when fingerprint reader fails. Makes sense
System is not letting other apps take control over the phone even though they are listed as device administrators. It's a new security measure introduced with MM.
Of course everything changes when you have root privileges
I've rooted the phone yesterday. Nova can now unlock the phone with just a fingerprint. Also installed the Viper audio mod and deleted a few system apps.
Right now I'm investigating how to prolong the super brightness mode so it can last longer than lousy two minutes
Glad to hear someone appreciates the sound of perseverance \m/ \m/

The PIN is, just as you said, a backup security measure. If you're rooted you can go and download a fingerprint add on through Xposed.. that means Only your fingerprint is needed to unlock your device.
"Fingerprint Enabler" ?

Don't have G5 so I can't test or even know if what I'm saying is correct, but I was looking through the G5 git tree and saw the super brightness mode seems to be called HL_MODE standing for LGE_HIGH_LUMINANCE_MODE, there's referenced to it in the code, you could probably edit it there then compile and it will most likely work, however it seems it's also with references to the kernel so you probably gonna have to edit both the kernel and ROM simultaneously to make things easier...

I've just recetly got the sgs2, great phone, but it cost quite a bit hence I'd like to get one or more apps on it to make it completely theft proof.
What do you guys believe are the best apps out there to make your phone theftproof?
Tasker. It will make it theft proof and hundreds of other things!

As good as tasker is, I don't think it's a good choice for an easy solution to security. Theft aware and Cerberus are worth a look

Rather the ability to get the device back in my own hands, having my personal information secured is a plus, but I'm mostly concerned about retreiving that expensive piece of phone.
I'll look into the suggested apps, thanks a bunch allready!
Android webkey. You get complete control of your phone from any PC. If your phone is stolen and you want to lock it you get set a pattern lock, or leave a message or go into google maps and see the location. Of course the other person will see this going on so you better hope the thief has it in his pocket when you do this!
How do Tasker and other apps mentioned here help prevent theft?
I'd recommend Avast security - they have an option to install an antitheft onto your root partition so even if someone does a factory reset the app keeps running
And you can make it play a siren, send messages, and track the guy. Best of all - you can uninstall Avast once you got the security thing running.
Firstly, get some software that allows you to track it, send messages, take pictures using the camera etc.
I recommend cerberus, for a one-time-fee of €3 and a free 7 day trial.
Cerberus can also text/email if a non-authorised sim card is used.
Also, change the splash screen and the boot animation.
Changing the splash screen is difficult to do for someone not technical or into phones, so it's unlikely they'll be able to change it. Make sure it includes your name, an alternative number and an e-mail address. That way the phone is basically unsellable if stolen. If you want to sell it, just change the splash screen back.
Lastly the boot animation - also add contact details or make it something non-stock, just to again prove it's yours.
First thing a phone thief will do is removing the battery. Then he goes home and removes sim card. Hooks it up to his computer and wipes off everything.
Then you can buy your phone back on ebay. For a price off course.
Keep your phone in your pocket mate. This is the best advice you will ever get.
Just bought cerberus, and while it's features are more or less the same as theft aware, the support for it is truly amazing. I had a minor issue and emailed them and got a prompt response. Other advantages include support for 5 devices, automatic GPS enabling for rooted users and a nice flashable disguised CWM package
Also FYI, avast bought over theft aware, so look into avast, not the old software. It IS a pain to uninstall the rooted anti theft, but that's a good thing. Avast us? Ore intuitive, but I feel like like it's heavier on the system and there's no web panel, so keep that in mind.
Just try out a few, and pick the one that best fits your needs. FWIW, androidpolice had a mobile security shootout series that you may want to look at.
BEST OF LUCK!

I hate this feature a lot. I wish it would go away.
I don't remember the phone doing it when I first got it but it seems to now. I didn't pay much attention because I didn't expect the phone to do it seeing as how none of my previous phones have.
Without having to root the phone and disable it - is there a setting somewhere that I'm missing which is causing the phone to wake and the volume keys to work normally even though the phone is locked?

I don't have a whole lot. Very few, actually.
Reddit news. Google Wallet. Chrome Beta. DI.FM Radio. ES File Explorer. Facebook. Soundhound infinity.
Pandora, Roam Control were both recent but removed them and restarted the phone and it's still doing it

I've been attempting to avoid that real hard. I have flashed all past phones and I was trying to just enjoy this for what it was for a while. Flashing roms always sacrifices features or has other tradeoffs. Tired of that. Kept the number of apps way down, kept everything as simple as possible and of course... things still go wrong. Haven't even rooted it yet.

Man I want my phone to be as unresponsive as possible when it's off. and I want it to be hard to unlock.
If there's any semblance of "easy to unlock" I pocket dial a solid 18-22 people a day while at work... and since I've got my exchange account paired to it with the company phone directory of a few hundred people... it starts getting interesting real quick.
haha this is funny. these few have volume wake by accident(likely b/c of something they flashed or another app borking something) and do not want it at all, all awhile these others would love to have the feature....haha
to further clear it up, this is not a new sense feature as others have mentioned as mine here is bone ass stock not a single mod or even app downloaded on it yet and it does not do it one bit...

I find it not working correctly more often than not, however, that is because I only really use it while my phone is lying down, so the angle of my face might be tripping it up. I can't imagine what it will be like on the iphone x where this is the only way to unlock the phone. Holding my phone up to my face is not how I want to unlock my phone every time.

Nova launcher, custom icon pack, install Blokada from F-Droid for ad blocking.
Enable Developer Options, turn on GPU rendering. Also, set all animation transitions to 0.5.
For right now, keep all camera settings on auto until you are sure. On selfie camera, turn down to zero all lighting and fleshtone adjustments.

Right now this is the phone that gives me as much or more than the 2014 Moto Quark (Droid Turbo/Moto Turbo/Moto Maxx) phone -- which was a cutting edge phone that was hard to surpass for at least two years.
Thnx, ChazzMatt. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the unlocked boot loader. I'm already missing getting into some of my apps that require root, specifically, Moaab, Titanium Backup and Root Explorer.
But, I will get over it, and, who knows, maybe someday someone will root it? Probably not, but maybe.
Unfortunately, I can't get the finger print reader to recognize my fingerprint. Apparently my fingerprint is somewhat worn away. It will work on others fingerprints, just not mine.
I bought a nice little Incipio case for it and screen from Verizon. Apparently, this LG is not a big seller here in Flagstaff, so they don't carry much in accessories for it. These were the only ones theyhad for it. And, he had to look for several minutes before he found them. He said they only sold about one LG v30 a month.
Nice phone, I really like it. Thanks for your guidance on it.

One trick you can use for fingerprint sensor is to "add" another fingerprint, but still use the same finger. That way you can get even more angles of the same finger. I have both index fingers (both hands) added as like 4 different fingers.

It's not really an app I don't think. It's just a tile in notifications tray. You have the same version phone as I and I have it
Chazz, I've tried that many times. My fingers do not register, but others do (6 year old g-son, daughter in law, worker at Verizon). I've tried thumb, forefinger, etc, of both hands. It just won't click on my fingers, so now I'm using face recognition, not as safe maybe, but it does work.
Thnx for the suggestion.
OP, Galaxy princess, did you ever find the capture app?
I just downloaded the v30 owners manual and it does reference the capture+ in it a few times. I am on Verizon Oreo 8.0.
Pull down the status bar at the top of the phone and you will see it there.
Also with the screen off, click the volume up button twice to open it up.
I did try those two on my phone and it did work. If you've already found it, then please disregard my post.
I had the same issue after I deleted the app called QuickMemo+. I added it back through Settings, General, Update Center, App Updates. Once it was installed again, the Capture+ icon was back when I swiped down.

This is why people have to be very careful removing "bloatware". A lot of useful stuff is interconnected.
Has this happened to anyone? Like after a couple of hours of inactivity, it sometimes requires you to enter PIN before allowing users to use biometric unlock method. It says ' For your security, use your PIN to unlock your phone. You can use biometrics next time.' As shown screenshot attached below.
The weird thing is, this happens, sometimes it doesn't, and biometric unlock works fine without needing to enter PIN again.
Not a big issue, but kinda annoying needing to enter PIN from time to time
Yeah, I get that every now and then, too. Guess it's Android's (or Samsung's) way of making sure someone hasn't managed to fool the fingerprint or face unlock.

Greetings,
My S8+ (Oreo) is doing the same since day 1. My S5 (Marshmallow) was also doing it, it was asking for password and not allowing use of fingerprint from time to time. Many people have the same issue but no solution / reasoning explained yet, I believe.

My S8+ (Oreo) is doing the same since day 1. My S5 (Marshmallow) was also doing it, it was asking for password and not allowing use of fingerprint from time to time. Many people have the same issue but no solution / reasoning explained yet, I believe.

This isn't an issue.
It's a security measure taken time to time to prevent unauthorized access.
I disagree with "This isn't an issue." If it is driving me to turn off all my security because it won't allow me to disable it, then it is an issue. I've read the same sentiment from others.

^ comment makes no sense.
The stupid feature Google has introduced, is randomly demanding PIN instead of fingerprint. It will happen every couple of days or so, even when phone has not been restarted. You might have used it 10 minutes ago, doesn't matter... you will be asked for PIN and it says "use biometrics next time". It's so arrogant, and takes away control of our phone security. They are treating us like children. It's condescending and disrespectful.
The thing is, we can already choose to have no pin if we want, just swipe to unlock. So why can't we have biometrics ONLY without pin? Because we can't have nice things? Why?
It's the worst thing about my new phone by far. I will never stop looking for a way to get around this brain-dead "feature". How I unlock my phone should be up to me, not some crusty old Android developer sitting in a dark room, dreaming up ways to piss people off. If anyone knows how to stop it asking for pin, and use biometrics all the time (except after reboot) then please share knowledge.
"Its a Feature, not a Bug"
The fact that this is a feature rather than a bug does not make it okay. In fact, it makes it worse. It is a problem when a company tries to force its way upon me and upon a product I own and I have zero ability to do anything about it. If its "for my security" then it is MY choice to decide not to be forced to put in some pin at random when I have a perfectly good fingerprint that works just fine. I am not personally worried about someone cutting my finger off and revealing the occult secrets hidden within my phone, so I should be able to turn this off. If you try to force me to do something and make it impossible to get around, I might just leave your stupid platform forever.
