what's the most reliable way to use the wireless hotspot on the s6 edge without the network knowing, in the uk? there seems to be a multitude of methods available, and little consensus about how exactly networks detect tethering.
I know I've asked a relatively similar question in general Q&A, but I was genuinely hoping to get a general discussion about how cyanogenmod hides tethering, right now I would just like to know specifically what uk S6 edge users have found is reliable. thanks

Is tethering carrier dependent? And if so, how so?
I'm on Rogers and am on a grandfathered plan that includes unlimited data. That's right, UNLIMITED! (They didn't think it'd be an issue 6 years ago when they gave it to me - lol).
Anyways, when I first got my S2 back in July, tethering was working great (only used for one day). My wife also has an S2 and she's on their $25 month 500mb plan and her tether works fine too.
But now when I got to tether, it'll seem to start up momentarily and then displays "error" instead of "...tethering is active". If I start and stop it a few times, sometimes it'll stick and stay active but then sometimes the device that is connected will get a "limited access" status and can't browse the internet. Pretty strange.
My Googling shows people inquiring about Rogers having the power to disable tethering. But I can't see how they would be able to. How can they even tell if I'm tethering my device?
I've posted questions in the past about how maybe running SD Maid had somehow messed up my tethering but people are pretty adamant it's not. Also wondering if maybe permissions got changed when I ran ROM Manager's "Fix Permissions".
So what do you guys think? Is it Rogers blocking me from tethering, and if so, any way around it?
Thanks.

It's been a while since I was on Rogers, but back then the unlimited plans did not include tethering and used a separate APN compared to those that allowed it, since you and your wife are both using Rogers on SII, I'm assuming you checked this and that the APNs are the same, if that's the case there are other ways they could be blocking your tethering. The only way to know for sure would be to call them and ask if your plan includes tethering, if they say no, they're blocking it you can be sure of that.
Yes both of our APNs are the same. I don't want to inquire with Rogers if they are blocking my tethering because I'm afraid they'll come up with an excuse how I shouldn't have unlimited data anymore.
I'll be taking a trip to Western Europe shortly and am looking for options to continue to use data in a few countries. Not concerned with phone calls. My phone is CDMA so that is out. Also have access to a T-Mobile Galaxy S II, but it is not unlocked. Also I don't think the T-mobile version works well for Europe. I was looking into getting a portable hotspot MiFi for the trip and found Xcom Global, but $15 a day seems a bit much.
What's the best option to stay connected? Is there any company that offers temporary android phones with data for travelers? Or a cheaper company for a MiFi? Need data in London, Amsterdam, and Paris.

Whoops. Sorry.
Well I did find my old Touch Pro 2 which does run on the Europe frequencies. Now I need to figure out the SIM cards. Any suggestions from anyone else who has used SIM cards in Europe? I will be traveling between London, Paris, and Amsterdam. Could use some coverage on the Eurostar between Paris and London as well since they don't seem to have wifi yet. Thank you for any help.
I guess I'll need to unlock it for SIM and then disable sense, etc. so that only wifi tether is running to save battery as much as possible.
Hi all. Like my title says I'm thinking of switching to T-Mobile from my ATT Note because I get NO service in my house with ATT and want to switch to prepaid plans. I know T-Mobile has wifi calling capabilities which could solve that issue (albeit start another one cuz t-mo service in the rest of the area isn't that good). 1.) What am I looking at to switch my i717 to t-mo service? and 2.) What do I have to do to get the wifi calling capabilities working? I did see some threads about flashing the t-mo note stock rom getting the wifi calling working. Thanks for any help I can get.
Well ....
It's impossible to tell you that your service will improve by making the switch, as your service issues may follow you regardless of the carrier.
Not all areas get good service ....and if you know others that are getting good service, then I would certainly quiz them about it.
The note can suffer from antenna issues as well, and the switch may not help.
Beyond the obvious, some note users are having sim issues after rooting and switching over to t-mobile via carrier unlock.
This is a random, but serious issue, that causes the device to fail all network connection.
Until a fix is found, users wanting to use the ATT note on t-mobile, are taking a higher than average risk when switching.
If you are looking for more information (highly recommended ) then you will want to visit the " note super everything thread "....located at the top of the general note section.
Please do your homework there, as you "will " want to learn as much as possible.....g
Hello everyone, I am loving my V10 so much. I did have one question. HAs anyone figured out where the Tethering/Mobile Hotspot check occurs? I have a Nexus 6 and one of the ROMs I tried diabled the check for Tethering/Mobile Hotspot, so it doesn't eat my allowance. Has anyone figured this out? I didn't want to post in Android Development for the V10 as I figured this is more of a general question than one relating to a specific build? I have plenty of hotspot, but with my travelling soon, I had hoped I could bypass it for a bit to give me a little more leeway.
I'm sorry if this wasn't in the right area, I googled up this same question and this board has it the most it seems. If its in the wrong area, please move the topic to the right area so I know where to ask next tome (or link and I'll delete this ((if possible)) and recreate).
I've been using PDANet USB Tethering for the last 3 years or so with Boost Mobile, Samsung Galaxy S3. My phone is showing severe signs of age and issues, and I'm having tons of PDANet related issues. I have unlimited 4G LTE data, but I can't use my wireless tether because the phone company detects it and stops it at 8GB where as USB tethering I've gotten 100+ GB in a single month no issues.
I'm looking for a new phone I can get, that I can somehow mask everything I do on it so that the phone company is unable to see what I'm doing on it, and won't be able to determine if I'm using my phone's wireless tethering features. I prefer a smartphone, obviously, cause I do take it with me where I go and like to have access to my apps. I'm inexperienced with installing ROMs or rooting, never figured out how with my S3 because all the topics are outdated and inaccurate and I only ended up damaging the phone trying. I've got about a week or two to find a new phone that will work with Boost Mobile. My current phone's network mode is CDMA/LTE/EVDO, just to give you an idea of what network I'd need to use for Boost (CDMA I guess?). I need 4G as well, it seems that 3G doesn't work at all at my location and I only get 1 bar of 4G LTE when I'm at home in a specific 3 inch by 3 inch space in my room that I have to tape my phone down to, but at least it works.
There's no other internet options available to me where I live, so my phone is my internet. Just to clarify before people suggest getting an internet service.
Just to be sure, I don't want anything made by Apple, but that should be obvious, posting in the Android forum.
I have found that Boost Mobile won't let me use anything but like 6 specific phones only. Two of the choices being the S7 and the S8.
I've done a search on Amazon looking for unlocked S8 phones, however the comments and reports all claim these unlocked devices are a lie and don't actually work with services they claim to, or have conflicting reports and such. I'm unable to find an Unlocked S8 for use with Boost Mobile.
I've found that I can edit the APN to add 'dun' to my type list, to bypass the data limit of Mobile Hotspot, however I am hoping that it doesn't also cause the company to start charging me hundreds of dollars a month. I want to make sure they can't actually see the traffic either, I don't want my ISP knowing what I'm doing online, because they will just turn around and sell every website I visit to third parties which is now a thing in the USA.
I'd rather Boost not know whats installed on my phone or what websites I visit.
