Hi reader xD.
So here's the thing.. I have an S3 with a nightly of cyanogenmod 13. After I installed it everything worked and was all nice and shiny. This is a kind of a backup phone that I only use sometimes specially when I want to try cyanogemod new releases. So this phone spends practically 90% of the year off. A few weeks ago, I turned it on because I was gonna set it up to loan the phone to a friend and I noticed that the volume key was not working (wasn't able to go into recovery mode). I also tried it in a music app and still could not control the volume with the button. Went to check the buttons settings and "control the volume with the button" is ticked. I also updated with another nightly through phone settings "check update".. but still.. no sings of life for the button.
So I opened the phone and took the button out.. and tried with a thin plastic tool to press directly where the volume button is placed (to check if it was a bad contact thing) and nothing happened.
I am guessing this is an hardware problem but don't know what to look for. Any suggestions on what more can I check? Any thoughts on this would be very much appreciated!
I see that I am f...ed xD.. ( T_T )
Is it possible to get into recovery mode without the volume keys? Because I would like to clean it all up.. install a cyanogenmod update and then find some kind of app to allow anyone that uses the phone to easily control de volume without those buttons and without going to the settings.. I think I've seen a forum talking about something like that.
Yes, by using either terminal ( if you have cm13 enable it in developer settings) or by using adb (adb reboot recovery). Easy. But you'd want to consider finding the component and buying it. It's cheap as chips and easy to replace. It has the volume buttons, the LED on the front and the earpiece.

Sure.. I guess I don't have much to lose if I try your suggestion. Gonna search for tutorials on how to do that and then just get my hands dirty.
Thank you!!

PLEASE HELP!
I always have a problem with my phone X10i when i make some calls.
The problem is I pressed mute, speaker, END or on hold button (some of them) by accident (Pressed by my ear).
I checked my phone sensor already and it works fine. May be it happened from the way I held my phone.
But I just want to know how to get a rid of all those buttons from the screen during a call.
Is there anyway I can use some apps to hide all these buttons?
I believe that phone screen is built in the Rom. Thats probably modifying the Roms phone screen. You could probably do it if u know how to modify roms. I dont. I just mod phones with new firmware from xda.
Sent from XDA Premium from my X10a rooted running 2.2 rendeiro2005 cyanogen rom 6.1.3 gingerbread v1
Use to happen to me frequently,I enabled the proximity sensor and use left hand mode now. That solved it for me
U can use shakeawake tool. It works pretty fine. It has a cheek guard feature which detects when your face is touching the screen

will try that with the left hand mode, sounds promising ^^
i hate it, one cannot have a call for more than 5minutes without pressing sthg. -.-
and most annoying my ear LOVES the End button ^^

Same here. I do put the calls on hold very often. :-(
I do this on my G2X all the time. My proximity sensor seems to be working properly. I just went to Settings > Call settings > Always Use Proximity and checked it. Apparently orientation always trumps proximity so we will see if this fixes my issue.
Problem SOlved
ON my HTC One I downloaded Call Screen Lock and I have enabled long press to unlock feature, I also enabled HTC One feature Power button ends call,
I often wonder how is HTC surviving without a law suit from someone with a ear damage. I had soo many times speaker suddenly shouting in my ear. Almost did hit the phone with anger onto the wall.
is there any app that disable the Mute hardkey shortcut (vol up + power) on Android? I accidentally hit it all the time when using volume buttons eg. screenshot
Hello guys. At first i´m so sorry for my bad english, so i´ll show you a video of my problem.
Phone - HTC Hero, Android 2,1

It will not go to sleep mode when pressing the end/power key. But it still takes phone OUT of sleep mode, but now I have to wait for the screen timeout instead of pressing the button again.
I tried to find answer to my question, but i failed... I tried Reboot, Spare Parts - i don´t know if it worked properly, Hard reset, but the power button still not working properly.
Thank you! Marty

Try to restore your phone to the default, or try to install a custom rom

Now i did a ROOT and i try to flash in some ROMs but it still not works + it cancels my outcoming and incoming calls...
Sounds like you have a failing power button.. like I do.
It's a real pain in the ass... been looking for solutions for quite a while, besides physically replacing the circuit board the button is on...
I know this is old but for anybody researching the same problem... after trying MANY different apps for taking over power button tasks, the only real solution was to buy a replacement "Flex Cable" assembly on eBay. Takes some bravery to install but everything works now.
But that's just my experience.
I suppose that the simplest way out id button remapper that you can find hear at xda.
By using such software you can easily turn any of the other physical keys of your device into the power button.

True, and they did work once the phone was up and running. However, when something went wrong on my rom and I needed to get into recovery to re-flash... I was SOL.
Yes, remapping is applied only after the kernel is loaded... So remapping is quite useless if the phone is switched off.
Hi All,
I have flashed EUViewPad 7 based on Stock rom. installed SD Card Booster, CPU Master and etc.
The flash is fine since I managed to boot it and install several apps.
Until I needed to reboot the device since the hacker keyboard always forces to close. I rebooted it and poof I am in infinite boot animation without a way to remove the battery. afraid to fiddle just waited the battery to drain so I can test again(This happened on my O1. just removed the battery, put it back and its ok)
I have drained the battery after almost 8 hours of non stop boot animation. But this device won't turn on anymore. It just vibrates when I press the on button.
Tried opening the back(crap I have scratched the back covering. now it has large scratches ) but the battery is taped . My question folks is what is the possible solution to my problem aside from removing the battery(can't even get to clockword recovery)
Thanks
Not too sure about your device, but doesn't yours have a reset button like the viewpad?
Should be a small hole on the bottom edge right next to the microphone.
Try pressing that with a paperclip if you're having boot problems.
Anyway, if you've drained the battery completely, make sure to leave it charging for a little while. Too low battery voltage will make it unable to start. 15 mins or so should be more then enough.
Try starting with both volume buttons + power pressed. Keep holding it until you see "entering recovery mode."
Let me know if this gives any results.

Ahh I have that reset button beside the microphone hole. Will try this later on. Thanks for your help and for your custom rom
Uh oh... Tried pressing the small hall beside microphone, pressed on button. No luck. tried pressing that hole and on at the same time No luck again.
Is it possible that it will mess up the whole boot process due to boot animation loop??

I'm afraid and it sounded like, from your descriptions, that the boot process has been messed up .... so, what do you got to lose by trying to "wake" it up or at least respond to commands, right ?
Try holding the power button & use a small pin to press RESET - leave it connected to the power supply/charging unit.
Try holding both volume Up & Down key & use a small pin to press RESET
Try holding both volume Up & Down key along with the Power button at the same time, and press RESET (you might want to get someone to help you to this)
Try holding the volume Down (left) key & Power button, and press RESET with a small pin.
Does any of these work in getting the screen to show life, be patient as you might have to hold it for 10 to 30 seconds before it cycle & restart/display the 3 birds ...
Chances are you will need to flash a stock ROM with the SULT3 utility, and then if successful, root it again & start over (carefully) - it might work or it might not even connect via usb at all .... worth a try, got nothing to lose at this point.
As a last resort, contact Cherry Mobile and get it repaired & sending it back to the shop .... check the warranty details in your locale, opening the rear case & exposing the battery, might or might not void your warranty coverage.
Hi Letiride,
I have tried the combinations you have specified but no avail. I can't boot this so my PC with correct drivers cannot even recognize i plugged this.
Is my Tablet already bricked?? I have bought this second hand so no warranty already.
Huhuhu Did I already have one of the "Vibrator" Android phone

Oh mine, no - if it won't power up or boot into Recovery or FTM mode, I'm afraid it's critical if not officially certified "paperweight". Try uninstalling your PC's usb drivers for the device, or use another computer & install SUTL3 utility from Viewsonic, and see if it can at least beep & signal some USB sequence loading the drivers.
Here's a link to Droid Explorer posted elsewhere in XDA (instead of pointing you to "Search" for it) Install it if you can get the yours powered on, but use it with care as it's a very "powerful" tool to explore all the hidden workings of the Android device(s).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=558108
My feeling is that the core image & boot file(s) were corrupted, damaged & overwritten, and it need to be reformatted & reflashed from a stock *.nb0 file, someone with adb might be able to - maybe, just maybe - rescue it.
Let's see if one of our fellow developers might have a better solution on where to begin b/c this is about as far as I can offer - well, you can always put on eBay for parts & hoped you didn't spend a lot as 2nd. hand.
Uhhh looks like i have no other choice but to have this repaired at service center and pay

I too would like to know if that is possible
Ive found out that its possible to disable the WAKE function for the power button. This will disable the power menu, but you can still hold the button down for like 6sec and it will shutdown... :-\

No way
Sorry to revive a dead thread, but I want to be able to wake/sleep my phone with the power button, but don't want anyone to be able to access airplane mode or turn the phone off. I have a HTC Desire S, and when that's locked, the power button does absolutely nothing except switch the screen on, which is what I want to happen. As the S3 currently functions this is a maor issue for me, because if anyone finds/steals my phone, there is nothing turning on Airplane mode immediately, at which point my phone becomes unrecoverable.
This seems like a limitation/oversight of touchwiz, is there no way at all I can get the S3 to behave like the Desire?

It's not like there's something stopping them from turning it off (hold the button, it's wired in the hw, impossible to disable) or simply taking out the sim card

It's wired into the hardware? Are you sure about that? The power button on my HTC does absolutely nothing if you press the power button (for any length of time) while the phone is locked. In my opinion it would be software that controls the function of the button.
You make a good point about the sim though - that an the battery being removed would stop me from finding it.
However the main thing I'd like to disable is the airplane mode function from the lockscreen as it literally takes no time at all to do. At least the other methods require a little bit more effort, and the scum that steal phones aren't usually known for their intelligence, so I can always cling to the hope they won't think about taking the back off (since so many phones nowadays have inaccessible guts) to remove the battery or sim, at least not immediately.
Is there anyone who can help with this?

I don't think it's any more difficult to steal the phone by diabling the powerbutton functions, but I would still really like to find a way of disabling this function. Although it's meant as an easy way to enter reboot, shutdown and turning on/off misc functions, I don't mind unlocking the phone to do the same things through the slidedown menu.
I just don't like the fact that the phone actually can be turned off by holding a button down for x-amount of seconds, or even open up a menu that lets anyone change the status of the phone. When it's locked it is locked to prevent accidental changes when the phone is in my pocket AND to prevent people from accessing any options, unless they pull the battery and boot to download or recovery.
The powerbutton and the home menu should be allowed to wake the phone up, so that you can read widgets/missed events/the time or whatever, but never let anyone do anything before they enter the correct pattern/password or whatever security is enabled.
Hope that this can be fixed. Been searchin around for weeks after this and would really like to see someone assist us with this issue.
Its a build not a fix wait for SGS4 and see if its been added .
Personally if i had to enter pinlocks as you suggest i would not want this phone .
Development sometimes putting up a large bounty or donating a SGS3 may kick start a modification .

Any thoughts?
The ONLY area it seems to work is to power up the device.
I cannot do the following by pressing it or holding it...
1.) Wake device up
2.) Pull up the shutdown menu
3.) Hold down to power off device
...and most importantly...
4.) cannot select options in CWM (but if I hold volume and power it'll get me into CWM)
Any idea how to flash it back to stock? I have a jig if that helps. Thanks.
Currently the only way I can wake the phone is to plug into a charger.
This had happened to me like 3 times. What I did in order to get back to work, was opening the phone and blast some air with those cans of compressed air use for computers.

Most likely the power button is going bad. I get these a lot. I can solder a new power button on for $50 including return shipping. You can email me @ seivad17 [at] msn.com

"Go to youtube and search how to dissemble, there are couple of video that shows a step by step process of dissembly. Now the only problem is that there isnt a specific video locating the lock button and you will have to find that yourself. So after you dissemble your phone, locate the lock and use CRC QD Electronic Cleaner I read that is the most reliable and decent one out of all sprays and all you need to do is spray around the button area, and push the lock button 20-30 times and repeat the process a couple of times. After that you should let it dry for a couple of min and then put your phone back together and it should work fine!."
This worked for me. I found it in the captivate forums. Been going 1 month strong after the cleaning!

okay I'll check that out. How about the USB port? I need a solid connection to the computer. If that's the case I can jig it, place it in download mode, and re-install my ROM and get out of the boot loop I have the phone is in. The power button then is irrelevant because I'm sure I can set the phone to wake with the volume keys thus eliminating the need for the power button. That's the other issue (and more important issue). Otherwise, I have a paper weight.

If you fix the power button and you can get into CWM (like your first post says) then you should have no problem. The power button is probably shorted out (like mine was) and you cannot use it for selection.

no I can no longer get into CWM
Short story I tried returning phone to stock and went to flash a stock image file via ODIN and it's stuck on the bootup screen.
