Hello there.
About a month or so ago I saw an ad in the Canadian Tire flyer for a new media player for $99 on sale. Now of course I can't share a link just yet, at least not for another 8 more posts. But if you search Canadian Tire website, you can find it.
The purpose of this post is to see if anyone has tried this. It's got some pretty good stats. Plus the fact it has a one year exchange warranty and it's Canadian Tire, so if anything goes wrong with it within 365 days, you bring it back and get a new one. No questions asked. That's very appealing. So... has anyone tried this yet? Here are the stats.

What do you mean by this question? Can you add external storage? If that is indeed your question, then yes. I have a 1TB WD drive hooked up to it and watch "stuff" that way.
I mean to use as internal storage not removalable. Iv tried to get this to work to day but I can only get it to setup as a removable USB. Also this box comes pre rooted so do I need to download SuperSU app? Will that help to get things working proper?

Hello everyone, As I'm testing the tablets to see which one to keep, I found a Toshiba media player quite useful. It's like media suite which also lets you stream musics, videos, pictures from your PC using Windows media player. I installed the apk on Samsung Tab 10.1 (unrooted), and it worked perfectly.
I cannot do any screen grab, as I've not rooted it yet. But believe me it does work beautifully. The video player also lets you skip to the next video or go back to the previous one (if you have more than one in a folder).
Install instruction:
1. copy the ToshibaMediaPlayer.apk to any folder of your choice on /sdcard/ location.
2. Tap once on the ToshibaMediaPlayer.apk and select 'Install'.
3. Enjoy.
NOTE: I copied the apk from Toshiba /System/app/ using root explorer and used the same to install the apk. I'm sure it should work with other file manager as well.
The apk is 10 MB, therefore apk size limit prevents from uploading on xda. Please use the multiupload link to download the file.

Great app.

Thanks! It fixes my issue with some videos not stretching the whole way so i'd have black bars on the top/bot and the sides! I wonder what other video player apps there are that might work. I definitely like this over the honeycomb gallery player.
Gonna try this, thanks. Mobo player works well most of the time but has it's hickups still.

Sry for the OT but i install this on my TF101 and it's working great, only problem is that only plays what stock plays... Is there a way to use an external player like mobo or vitalplayer?
As someone else mentioned it only really plays what the stock player plays and doesn't really have much in terms of options. Sticking with Mobo Player for now. Thanks for your work though.

Hi,
Can anyone who had Toshiba Thrive test out if it plays videos on wifi from a network share like a network hard drive or from a shared folder on a networked computer without first coping the whole movie to the tablet?
I tried Acer Iconia, Morotolla Xoom and not matter what file manager or video player I used, they all first start coping a movie to the tablet and only after that they start playing. I also have Acronis 101 and that one doesn't copy videos and opens them right away and starts playing.
Also can you read external hard drives in NTFS format when connecting it to the USB port on the tablet?
we're missing some libraries that we need to get DLNA working. it's looking for jnidhsdk, but can't find it. can you look in /system/lib/ on the toshiba and see if there's anything that might look useful?
better yet, if you could just extract the whole folder, I'll have a look myself.
Thanks,
Sam

A roundabout solution is to use the Plex app to stream movies stored in your pc/mac on the GT10, though it will set you back 5 dollars.
And thanaks to the OP for the toshiba media player which is quite neat.
Any chance you could also port the toshiba file manager, which I hear is quite good too?
Is Acronis 101 an app? Or a tablet?

Archos 101 is a tablet. Bad viewing angles, low memory but is light and cheap. It's on Froyo but it can see FAT and NTFS drives and opens any video from network drives shared over wireless network.
They have just announced new tablets on Honeycomb that will cost $279 for 8.1 inch and $349 for 10.1 inch and they will both have 1.5 GHz dual core CPU. both will come with 16 Gb flash memory but for $50 more you can order the same model with 250Gb SSD that is only 3 mm thicker than the same model with flash memory. Also they have full size USB port and you can buy a $49 USB 3G stick for your own data plan. That stick completely hides in the tablet and doesn't stick out and you can use it on your laptop/computer as well. I think I'm going to wait till september and buy one then.

I used to have a Archos 101 Gen8 before i sold it to buy a Transformer... their (Archos) Music/Video players are awesome, if only the TF could stream from SMB and with subtitles.
The "Acronis" was what got me lost

Acronis was a typo, I use both and guess my fingers typed it automatically when I meant the tablet.
Well, for the new tablets they are planning on getting a better screen. If they put 1Gb or ram I'll buy it. The old one had very little ram so it kept crying for low memory when installing apps. But multimedia side of it was great. So far I haven't found that on any Honeycomb tablets.
thanks alot !!
Worked for me instantly and picked up my TVersity Media server without issue. Playback was perfect, but I do wish there was a way to adjust the app to access my home network when away. I'm not a fan of Plex... I prefer TVersity.
please re-upload te apk file...
Yes if possible please re-upload. Or if anyone want to give me the apk I will upload it. Thanks in advance.
Hello
I have been looking around on the net, for a android tv setup. There are some tempting devices from China. I found a couple on Dealextreme and amazon uk, with cortex a9 processor. Does anyone have any experience with these devices.
I want to use it for video playback (replacing ac ryan) and running emulators. I would also like to know if i would be able to use it with a bluetooth dongle, since none of them have bluetooth build in.
Thanks
Hi,
Got the same idea. I've just bought a nice 1080 LED TV and would like to find a nice TV box to reproduce my media.
I was thinking to buy the HTC media link DG H100, which is now at a nice price of 49 Euros, but found a few Android 2.3/4.0 TV boxes at Ebay (50 to 100 Euros) and was thinking if they would actually work.
I would like to know if they actually reproduce internet videos at a decent speed.
I may try and see...
Hey,
I was thinking about an Android box thingy and there are many cheap options.
I would like to play around with some emulators (PPSSPP included) with a USB controller I have and watch some anime ^^ I'd also not like to spend in excess of ~$35 (max $45)
Any good cheap boxes that can do that? Preferably that support Lolipop since I love its UI.
I've seen ones with Amlogic S802,812 and 912 CPUs and RK3188 and 3368 CPUs.
Which one is decent? eBay links would be appreciated ^^ Thanks! (OpenGL ES3 support would also be nice.)
RK3188 drives my LighInTheBox mk809iv. It's got 2GB RAM, 8GB EMMC, a full sized USB 2 port, hdmi, microSDXC port, runs KitKat 4.4, comes with Kodi pre-installed. I rooted it with Kingoroot.com, so that I could run a vnc server on it. I remote control it with my phone which running the free Valence app, or sometimes I remote it with Screen Sharing on my Mac. It plays nicely, and I get decent enough Wifi speeds. It's run everything I have thrown at it. A quick search for mk809iv will bring up a whole lot of these devices, even some with 16gb EMMC. Some will arrive pre-rooted, others will not. Look for Realtek Wifi for best compatibility if you intend to flash it (which requires a PC). It is fun to play with, but looking back on the experience, I'd rather have had a small Android phone with MHL/hdmi-output, as it would have been much easier to set up if there was a screen on the device itself. Just a thought. Used Galaxy s3 handsets are getting cheap enough now, with the same functionality. Cheers!

Yep! Any suggestions regarding TV apps, websites with TV shows, forums for TV boxes and input devices? I don't really think the bundled remote would be something I'd wanna use. I've seen wireless small keyboards with trackpads, do you know anything about them?

The forum I use for my Android devices is usually XDA, right here.
I used a USB keyboard and a mouse to set mine up.
For the record, I rooted my MK809 IV, which has an rk3188 SOC running KitKat 4.4, with Kingo Root, to allow me to run a VNC server, because I use a free Android app called Valence on my phone as a wifi trackpad/mouse and use my phone's keyboard to type on the Android TV. Root allows me to use the free RemoDroid app to control my Android TV from my phone or tablets from anywhere in my house.
Kodi comes on mine, and it's a free app in the Play Store anyway. I tried to set it up last April, but it kept crashing. If you are into that sort of thing, it is a very capable media server for sure.
For playing local files, I think MX Player is the champion app.
I ultimately bought a Logitech k700 keyboard with built-in trackpad to use with mine - I purchased it refurbished on a Newegg special for fifteen dollars! I take that keyboard everywhere with me. I love it. I prefer to use an actual mouse, but since I bought the k700, I have not missed mice enough to actually plug one in. I like it because it is nearly full-sized, but still compact, and it comes already set up to use a single USB wireless dongle. Range has been great, and after almost a year I am still on the first set of batteries.
Just today I was looking into purchasing the remote that came with your TV box, so please, let me know if you like it.
I bought a Hubman USB 2.0 hub in case I need more ports. It seemed like a good idea to have it, but I have not actually plugged it into the Android stick yet. I'm sure it will support a mouse, keyboard & usb thumb-drive just fine.
I don't want to go too far off-topic, so if it's okay with you, I'll pm you a list of apps I use for video. Nothing seems to slow down my aging rk3188 quad. Your rk3368 octa-core is going to be fantastic! Would you please post a link to the auction? Even if the auction is closed, I'd love to take a look at the device. The price you paid is unbelieveable!

Thanks for the links! It's insane that we can buy an 8-core computer for forty bucks. So sorry that I haven't checked in for a while.
I haven't really been watching TV or movies lately. When I've had free downtime, I've been playing a roll-playing game that's called Skydoms. I didn't think I'd get hooked on it, but then I did.
How is that box working out for you?
Sent from my SM-G900P using Tapatalk
I picked up the QacQoc M9C Max a few weeks ago and have been evaluating it for stability for a few weeks. Previously, the Chinese box I'd been using was the DoCooler M9S-Pro (32GB/3GB) because of the large amount of internal storage that it had in the EMMC.
The M9C Max had similar hardware (S905X vs S905); slightly different processor, and less RAM and smaller ROM. But it did have a major advantage that I'd missed with the DoCooler I'd been testing: it was running Android 6.0. With a good microSD card, storage problems seem moot.
The box came with a typical IR remote, standard for Chinese boxes, and I was nonplussed to discover that there were no batteries included. I didn't have any AAA batteries lying around, so I pulled them from the DoCooler remote to test. Before I did, I tried the DoCooler remote on it -- works fine. So if you already have a Chinese box with an IR remote, and you enjoy controlling it with an IR remote, there's a good chance that they're interchangeable. Included also was an HDMI cable, which was nice. The M9C Max has the following ports:
Analog A/V (cable not included)
SPDIF
Ethernet
HDMI
2 x USB 2.0
1 x microSD
Out of the box it booted up with the typical Marshmallow bootscreen, and after setting it up, you are greeted with a very typical Chinese box launcher.
I opened the "OnlineVideo" app and was given a choice to link this to any application I wanted. I'm guessing that this was designed to run with Kodi and did not come with it for ease of being sold on Amazon. The stock launcher did not stay for long, and I quickly put NovaLauncher on instead.
Google Play came preloaded -- not the AndroidTV Leanback version, but the version on tablets, and I was able to install a wide variety of apps. The literature indicated that the box was pre-rooted, and I downloaded a root checker to verify. Sure enough, the box arrives rooted. I was concerned that this would be problematic for Netflix operation, since I'd learned that rooted users might have some difficulty installing the app, but Netflix came preloaded and I had no difficulty viewing TV episodes.
As far as I was able to tell, the box does not have bluetooth. If you are interested in using it to game (why? it has a Mali-450 GPU only) you will need a Bluetooth dongle. I tested one, and I had no trouble pairing my old OUYA controllers. Because it was rooted, all I had to do was put the keylayout files in the proper folder and they worked fine. The box was also able to put out enough power to play from my external 2.5" movie drive.
Everything seemed pretty stable. Antutu scored 32,437, which by today's standards is not great, but is good for the S905x. In normal operation everything seems very quick. I was easily able to sideload Kodi and it worked fine. I don't think it was any faster than the other S905 I had.
Anyhow, the M9C Max is on Amazon for $50, and I paid nearly twice that for the Docooler M9S-Pro. There's less RAM and a smaller ROM, but I don't think it makes a difference with the expandable storage. The GUI for this and other Chinese Android boxes is not very good. I recommend installing Nova Launcher and getting a good Keyboard/Touchpad combo: I use the Logitech K400r. Using it this way, one of the two USB ports will be used by the dongle, and the second will probably be used for an external hard drive.

I got the same box but mine came with some different pre installed apps.
How has Nova Launcher been going? Do you notice if it's any smoother/less resource intensive than the native launcher?
Also, you mentioned about Netflix and potential root problem. Have you been able install Magisk or some other root hiding app on this box? I would like to get to systemless root but I don't think I can "unroot" since my box came pre-rerooted.
Would love to know what other tips or feedback you have for this device. Thanks.
Hello all,
first of i want to thank you all for the great work, XDA was and is my biggest source of Android information.
Now for my request. But first some background info.
Recently my company has put up for sale some old hardware from which i have chose an HP Compaq Elite 8300 SFF (price 30 euro) with the following specs:
-Intel i5-3570 3,40GHz (4 cores)
-4GB DDR3
-no HDD but either i will use an USB 3.0 32gb drive or buy a small HDD or SSD
-there is no graphic card but it has an integrated Intel HD 2500 with HDMI port.
At home i have an old 46in Panasonic Smart TV wich is too old for current technology but is still Full HD 30 fps and its SLiM (considering its age).
Considering this i took this opportunity to get an desktop PC to ad it to the TV (already have a hidden space under the TV table so it does not show.
Now you might be asking why i haven't opted for a Chromecast or something similar. Reason is i trust more PC hardware and i am more familiar with it also i can add and remove hardware for upgrade as i please.
My request is if you can suggest me an Android OS to install onto it.
I plan to use it for mostly Netflix and YouTube and some controller specific games like Asphalt 9 or some older/emulated games.
The PC specs are good for the almost free price, i am also familiar with the PC since i worked on same model for some years so the performance is right.
The reason of why i want Android is that unfortunately i have no cable internet so i am limited to data, fortunately i have data plan with free YouTube/Netflix
Thank you for listening to my ramblings.
Kind regards,
Redbloodedrose.
