Phone disconnects from Wi-Fi in sleep mode - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Greetings. I have a problem with my phone and Wi-Fi connection.
My phone is a Sony Xperia J running stock Android 4.1.2. When I leave it for a while in sleep mode, whether charging or not, it disconnects from my Wi-Fi connection and uses my phone's data, draining my data plan.
I need your help concerning this issue. Here are some of my phone's related settings:
Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep: Always.
Avoid poor connections: Unchecked.
Extended Standby Mode: Unchecked.
Thanks in advance.
UPDATE: Since then I've disabled my data plan so I can check if my phone is properly connecting to my Wi-Fi or not. It seems that yesterday I had no problem, but today I'm experiencing it. I don't know what should I do. :crying:

Did u use SIPdroid?
If yes uninstall it.
Sent from my OPO using CM14.1 <3

Also make sure that you don't have the battery saver mode on or another app that tries to save battery because they will often interfere and disable that for you as well.

Only other setting I can think of that controls that is in Developer Options. There's one that's aggressive hand off from wifi to cellular data and one for keep data on at all times. If you haven't enabled Developer Options yet then forget I mentioned it as it'll not be on by default.

I have Developer Options enabled and I don't see any of these options there.
Anyway, I think I have found the cause of the problem (a conflicting application, I just did a clean reinstall of it) and so far I'm good, if the problem persists I'll post again.
Thank you everyone who participated in this thread.

Glad to hear that it seems you found the cause. Please let us know what app in case someone else has the same issue and stumbles across your post.

Well, it was WhatsApp. Apparently I had a duplicate APK in my SD card (I use Link2SD) from before the factory reset. I say it was a duplicate because I unlinked WhatsApp from the SD card, but when I uninstalled it it said it was removing it from the SD card.
Thanks again!

[Q] Which (sync?) app is eating GPRS? And how do I stop it?

Hi hope someone can help.
I've bought an Xperian X10 mini for my daughter. She loves it. All her friends love it. The iPhone owners want one! (Big) but.....
She is not a heavy user, and so put her on a PAYG contract. However it is running out of credit very quickly, and when I checked the usage it is nothing she is doing, but some background app that is regularly (hourly) connecting with GPRS and doing... well something, but I have no idea what :-S The info on the usage (from Orange) is (e.g.)
date & time event type dialled number/description duration/vol(Kb) cost (?)
22/05/11 19:22 GPRS ap-prepaidsessio 38.0 0.00
with the same entry every hour:22
We have tried disabling as many sync type options / apps as we can find (e.g. Timescape) but it is still happening, and is driving me up the wall.
The reason I am even more annoyed is that most of the time it is at home, and connected (apparently successfully) to our wifi, so why the hell is it using GPRS anyway when there is an active wifi conection?! :-S
I have tried everything I can think of, and short of turning it off there seems little I can do. Can anyone help please??
- Which app is doing this?
- How do I configure it to either
i) use Wifi (preferred - would rather not disable functionality if possible) or
ii) stop auto syncing every hour?
Any help very gratefully received!
Thanks in advance
T
There are a couple of apps out there that can monitor data usage per app. But so far, all those that I found require Froyo (2.2) and above. I'm guessing your using the stock SE ROM so that's 2.1.
But there is an alternative.
Dial *#*#4636#*#*
Click Usage Statistics
Click Battery history
Click the Other usage dropdown
Click network usage
That should show you which apps are using your network connection. But both wifi and 3g; at least it gives you an idea.
As to how to prevent use, you could go to each app and customize syncing options if at all possible. If you just want to block an app from using the network totally, I suggest LBE Privacy Guard, free on the market.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.lbe.security
They have a thread here on XDA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1091065
EDIT: BTW, the phone shouldn't be using GPRS when wifi is available. That's weird. First time I've heard of that happening.
Many thanks for the info - really useful - will check the links you've given.
On the wifi (and yes it is weird - and annoying!) could it be "connected" but without a "proper" connection? Is there some way I can check, e.g. switch off GPRS and see if can see www?
Just tried what you suggested (disconnected the internet from my wifi router, but router still on), and my X10MP didn't even attempt to connect to GPRS despite using apps which use data. The apps returned errors.
Maybe your X10M fails to connect to the wifi? I actually have no idea what's going on.
you and me both buddy!
thanks for trying tho!
I'll delete the connection anyway and try set it up again....

I didn't need to enable anything to use that. Sorry, don't know how else to help.
well it carried on despite various fiddling. so I did a factory reset.... no accounts set up no sync etc - factory reset - and it's still happening??!! so something SE/Android is doing it, but I still have no idea what? Surely I'm not the only person with this issue??!! :S :S :S

very simple fix, go to Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > uncheck Data enabled.
that way mobile data (gprs,edge,3g) is turned off and your problem is solved. If you're using stock SE software, theres a Data Traffic widget that lets you toggle the Data Enabled setting on and off easily.
Sync is not the only thing using data traffic, background apps can too, as well as some of the apps she might be using. ( some apps have adverts )
Thanks. Had also been nosing on SE site, and am obviously not the only person with this problem. I unchecked the box a few hours ago, am hoping that that cures it. I've also found anotehr PAYG plan with the same provider that has unlimited internet, so may switch to that. So one way or another will be resolved.
However I am still left annoyed. This ****** device is supposed to be under MY contorl not the other way round! Not knowing what is doing this, or (and because of this) not being able to stop it is ****** annoying! As is the fact it (whatever "it" or "they" are) is using GPRS when there is an open wifi connection!!
Ho hum - progress eh...
Well turning off the Data seems to have done the trick thanks. NOt really satisfactory not knowing what is doing it, but there we go. Thanks for all the help all
If shes not using the data at all, you can try to delete all access points - GPRS,WAP, etc. even MMS...with no APN, no connection, no access to net, no credit loss...Just go to settings-wireless networks-mobile networks-access point names-click on any of them-press menu button and choose delete...Im working for the operator so I solve this kind of problems every day :-D It is easy if you dont want to use net in mobile at all but still I think you should flash it with SEUS because your problem is weird.
That's the thing - she does use data. so want it to be enabled. but the vast majority of the time is at home with a perfectly good wifi connection, so why won't it use that?!
Anyway am swapping to a PAYG tarriff promising "free" internet, so will see how that goes.
thanks t

Cell data connection stalling - anyone else experiencing issues?

Hi!
Is anyone else experiencing problems with the mobile data connection on this phone? It frequently stops working. Being in an area with excellent HSPA+ coverage, this can't be a signal issue.
The phone will suddenly stop loading anything, while displaying "3G" and an active upload indicator in the notification area. No internet usage is possible in these situations.
The only remedy: Cycling "data network mode" off/on. The phone will then immediately pick up HSPA+ again, working as intended.
My previous phone (Nexus One), which I used pretty much identically and at the same places as my Galaxy S2, did not experience these stalling issues. Is this a general (firmware) problem, or should I possibly look into getting a replacement unit?
I also have this problem. My SGS2 is on O2 (UK), got the phone from P4U.
Exactly the same problem, connected through H+ with good signal, suddenly the phone will switch to 3G and I will lose my connection, this can last for minutes unless I toggle data on/off. I am on KE7, but had this problem with KE2 as well.
It sounds similar to a problem mentioned in other threads, but this is the exact problem that I am facing.
I am also considering replacing the phone (if it is a phone issue, and not a firmware issue)
Happens to me also. Very annoying

Same problem here, but i also have problem with communicating via phone. Every time it starts in home, usually morning. I cant recieve any phonecalls or sms, also i cannot call or send sms. Need to reboot, signal is -113dB and i cannot choose plane -mode, it doesnt go there. Also i cannot select operator manually. Reboot is needed every time. This scenario has been over 3-4 mornings and i have owned SGS2 about 1,5 weeks now.
I have disabled fast dormancy, and never again experienced the issue.

Yes, I think he is referring to this procedure: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1086599
It's good to know I'm not the only one experiencing intermittent connection issues - as this appears to be a firmware problem, I will wait for Samsungs next few releases to solve the problem. If the bug won't go away I might get a replacement unit.
In any case, please report back - if someone got his phone replaced due to this issue, did it fix it? Any other possible solutions?
I've spoken about this issue, the 3g itself doesn't want to work.
I've tried uskr's fix and it seemed to have worked. Also root needed.
The fix involves editing /system/build.prop
adding to the bottom.
ro.ril.enable.dtm=1
ro.ril.gprsclass=12
ro.ril.enable.3g.prefix=1
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=28
ro.ril.hsupa.category=9
ro.ril.hsxpa=3
Happens to me, can't wait till it's fixed.
Same problem with my phone
Just to let u know guys i'm facing the same issue with this phone. My data connection disappears completely bringing up a circle sign. I also lose the ability to make or receive the call. I sometimes get calls going to voicemail with full reception, when this happens I can't browse either. I am debating whether to replace the handset as I have about 4 days left to get a replacement. I bought the handset from carphone warehouse. It is a sim-free unbounded handset running the latest KE7 firmware. Any help would be appreciated as i am absolutely in love with this handset. By the way could u tell me if anyone is experiencing jagged lines while scrolling in the browser.
That's something new.
Try factory reset.

Someone mentioned loading up the phone hidden menu *#*#9900#*#* and clicking on Disable Fast Dormancy there, but not sure if that actually works or not.

hello iznee,
so how did you disable fastdormancy ?
i tried the hidden menu *#*#9900#*#* but it didn't work.
or did you do uskr method posted about how to disable fast dormancy ?
what about the method of editing the system.prob ?
which one of them?
please clarify
and did that solved your problem about switching from 2g to 3g ?
regards
It's not really a 2g/3g problem, more 3g/HSDPA and up problem.
And there "could" be two fixes, one I mentioned above (editing build.prop) lets call it data fix.
And the other requires deleting or editing the actual fast dormancy file as explained here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1086599
Both are actually uskr's fixes. I did the data fix, which worked, but to make sure, I also deleted dormancy file.

5.1 update keep disabling mobile data

Hi fokls,
I recently updated to 5.1 ( Lollipop). I am on Tmobile and for some reasons, the mobile data setting kept getting disabled frequently.
Anyone knows what to do to fix the issue. I have tried pure stock as well as with root. None of them seems to fix the issue.

Why don't you enable airplane mode and then disable instead of rebooting. It might work.

I tried that, it didn't work. I'm waiting on it to happen again to see if I can just re-enable mobile data.
Even if I can, this is still a very annoying problem. You'll miss a lot of emails, and messages. Yet another reason you might not want Lollipop

Its strange though. But if you go to the setting, then mobile data, you will see that it is turned off. Turning it back on, will re-enable it. I dont know why it does it though. No need for air plane toggle.
Is there any possibility this problem could be tied to a default power-saving setting that is turning mobile data off to conserve battery?
Just a thought.

I did two things, but I haven't had this happen since I did them.
1. Renamed HwPowerGenieEngine3.apk and HwPowerGenieEngine3.odex to disable them. (just add .bak to the end) They are located in "root/system/app/HwPowerGenieEngine3/" and "/<SAME/ARM/"
2. Enabled the option in Mobile Network settings to "Always-on mobile data"
Like I said, I don't know for sure if either really fixed it, but I haven't been having this problem for the past 2 days.
#1 . do I need root to rename the files?

yes, that requires root
I have no answer for you but, I am on T-Mobile and that's not happening to me. My WiFi becomes disabled sometimes/rarely. Also USB debugging gets disabled as soon as I back out of the settings for it. This is on B309.
My friend and I both using HAM2 on Wind, still on 4.3. Phone signal (not only Data) frequently turned itself off, then turned back on after a minute or longer.
Could it be the AWS (1700) frequency not reacting well to Huawei power genie?
I tried using "Normal" instead of "Smart" power saving scheme but no joy. Just froze "Power Genie" app via Titanium Backup. I think it turns the power saving feature off completely. Will monitor to see if it helps. I'll trade network stability for shorter battery life.
Apparently this problem is getting worse with Lollipop update.

Android 6.0 shutting down data connection (Wifi and mobile data) in standby

With root you might be able to. It would depend on where it is in the code. Make sure to double check all data connections. Make sure they are not set to be disabled when screen is off.
I would contact them and see if they have the kernel source somewhere. Explain to them what is going on and maybe they will help fix it. (don't count on this option)

Tasker with Note8 - Discuss Here!

Hello fellow Note8 and Tasker users. I'm huge fan of both and usually have lots of questions on how to accomplish things in Tasker. Some of those things are device specific, so I thought a thread here may be handy.
Let me start with this: does anyone know how to use Tasker to activate PowerSave mode? I'm a teacher and I'd love to have this active when I'm teaching (then turn that off during my lunch break/plan period). Is there a certain intent I'd have to send? Or is it simpler?
Also, without root, I cannot turn on/off mobile data or adjust GPS settings...
Any workaround that you guys know of?

That's actually really cool and I didn't know it could do that. The beauty of Tasker however is that it's automated. I don't even have to think about it. I step into work and my phone is on Powersave mode with no mobile data connection or Wi-Fi (while I teach). I get in my car and my GPS is in high accuracy mode. I go in the library and my phone is on silent. I go to a house I'm tutoring in and my calculator app is already pulled up. It's a thing of beauty!
Okay so it turns out the method linked earlier is already "prepackaged" so to speak: it's included in Auto Tools! I already had that app and didn't even know it could do this. So you still need to use ADB to grant it the proper permissions but it will save you the effort of getting the app factory and importing the xml file and exporting the app.
I'm excited to see if I can toggle mobile data this way! It seems to be hit or miss for different devices. Anyone tried on their Note 8?

I have been reading over this for a while. I was wondering if this would allow for toggling on and off wifi hotspot? I've been trying, but I read something regarding Nougat and how the name/service or something was changed.
I have no problem toggling it off and on using the quick tiles, but I have an Android car unit that I use my Hotspot for.
This worked on my older phones, being able to stick an NFC tag to my phone mount in the car to toggle the Hotspot on when placed in it. Or having the Hotspot start/stop when connecting or disconnecting from the unit's Bluetooth.
Thank you for any help in advance.
@wigglitz I'm not sure how to toggle Hotspot, at least didn't find anything related on System-, Global or Secure Settings.
If you are using Toggle Setting method linked before, here is how you can find what you can change:
These commands will show you list of available settings with current values
Code:
adb shell settings list secure
adb shell settings list global
adb shell settings list system
Now, if you are unsure if some setting is what you think it to be, I'll give you an example how to check it.
Let say by using command adb shell settings list secure you find setting install_non_market_apps
Now if you are unsure if that is the one toggling Unknows sources on/off, do this:
Toggle Unknows sources off from settings, then type:
Code:
adb shell settings get secure install_non_market_apps
This will return 0 (because you set if off)
Toggle it back on from settings and run same command, now it will return 1
Now you can be pretty sure that's the one and will be able to make task to automatically allow installing apps from unknown sources when opening Substratum (for example)

Look into Auto Tools (Tasker plugin). That's what I'm using instead. There's definitely an option to toggle hotspot. There's literally hundreds of settings to tinker with, but my understanding is that the success of the individual options depends on the phone model.
I'm testing to see if I can toggle mobile data on the Note 8 and if time, I can test wifi hotspot too. :good:
GOOD NEWS!!!
Mobile data CAN be enabled/disabled without root on the Snapdragon model!!
Use the app Auto Tools with Tasker, give the appropriate permissions with ADB, and it works beautifully!! I'm so happy. ???
GPS works too - I can change it from battery saver to high accuracy and back at will.
I used to disable Mobile data, but now I leave it ON all the time. When you connect to wifi it's not in use so why to even bother turning it off? When I'am not on Wifi it's on. What I'am thinking of doing to save more battery is switch to 2G when connected to wifi, my 3GB/4GB signal strength is not so good. Should save a lot of battery when at home.

I am a teacher. The wifi signal in my building isn't great plus I don't need it anyway when I teach. I turn off pretty much everything during the times I teach. I have Tasker turn Wi-Fi back on for my lunch/plan period and turn off powersave mode. I used to lose 30%+ a day at work while not even touching my phone (awful signal primarily). I'm hoping this helps me keep it to 10% or less lost. I'll report back!

Turning wifi is a must if you leave it on it will always scan for new wifi and drain battery. I use signal towers to turn it on when at home and off when not, works rly good and no battery drain.
Any idea how to turn on the Blue Light Filter with Tasker? I'm using Autotools as well. Can't seem to get the setting values to adjust. I tried the system setting Blue_Light_Filter and set it to 1, but that didn't work.

If auto tools can't help you can toggle any quick toggle with auto input.

I tried that but when I give Auto Input accessibility rights, my phone turns to a slug. Everything lags. It immediately stops when I remove accessibility rights. Do you have a similar issue or have you tried Auto Input on this phone yet?
