Performance issue - LG G5 Questions & Answers

Hi! I got my LG G5 (H850) device approximately 1 month ago and everything was working just fine until a week ago. I noticed that it started showing performance issues: it was laggy and the response slowed down considerably. Then I turned the device off and removed the battery (which I usually rarely do). When I turned the device back on I noticed that everything went back to normal! Now it works like a charm again. Just for the record, I use the device rather intensively: I often watch movies via VLC, take photos and record videos, surf the internet etc. Any suggestions on how to solve this issue (if this actually IS an issue )? Thx in advance!

is it happening after a while when your phone restarts or randomly?
The first thing everybody will tell you (I think) is to factory reset, so you could try that but first make a backup of everything.
Also can you update your phone to the latest version?

Iv'e got the g5 in june, and since then Iv'e never encounterd any lags, stutters nor slowdowns, everything runs very smooth amd fluid, the phone is literally blazing fast. And its getting some extra speed with nougat

marac, telefon je već updatean na najnoviju verziju.

Try these! Any differences in smoothness or performance?
Settings/Developer Options/ Tick on "Force GPU Rendering" this should make your beast snappier/smoother.
If root available try L Speed/Entropy/fstrim apps found on Play Store! LG V20 & LG G5 are snappy beasts and most anticipated of 2016. Also well optimised with Snapdragon 820 and is better than Samsung.

You're right snapdragon 820 with LG's optimization is pulling way ahead of samsung with the slowish touchwiz

[Q] does the galaxy s3 have lag ?

Hello, this is my first post in the Samsung section, i just sold my xperia sp, because it gave me a lot of head ache, always freezing and lagging, scrolling is laggy too, not always, but 70% of the time, specially when multitasking, and what i mean by multitasking is just every day usage stuff,
switching between messenger and facebook is really pain in the ass, very slow and laggy, scrolling on Facebook is very laggy most of the time and i have to re-install the app every few days to prevent it from being laggy again
when i first enable wifi or mobile date, the phone will freeze for 5 seconds, because it couldn't handle all the received notifications at the same time and i have to wait at least 15 seconds for the phone to settle
apps force closing on me, home icons disappearing, and sometimes i get a blank empty app drawer ... and many other horrible things this phone did to torture me
so my question is, will i face the same fate if i get a galaxy s3 ? i am mainly interested in the lte variant with 2gb of ram !! because i already know that the international variant is as slow as my sp , perhaps a little better .

I think you should go for a newer device, even the lte variant is almost 3 years old.Check the htc one or LG g2, never ever ever Samsung again, but this is my opinion.

Xperia sp is not a bad phone, it has 1.7ghz dual core krait by qualcomm. I'm wondering for a user who can make a thread on xda, why can't you handle your lag problem? Maybe with installing an aosp rom, or add some tweaks, or etc

you will not understand what i mean only after you use one , xperia sp is the slowest phone ever made, it's kernel and software are not optimized at all, the phone on paper is very nice, but in real life, it's a nightmare to use.
it tends to freeze and lag on the slightest tasks, like getting notifications and message from facebook, scrolling in messenger and facebook gets very very sluggish because of very bad software and very bad ram management, almost every time you use youtube , or facebook, when you press the home button, the home icons disappear for few seconds, also, in the morning, or after few hours with data/wifi off, when you turn one of them on, the phone will freeze for 10 seconds, and keep acting slow for other 10 seconds, bcuz it couldn'tt handle one messagee and two facebook or update norification..
the only thing that works nice on this phone is video games( adreno 320+720p) but it's useless most of the time in heavy games, asphalt 8 and modern combat5, rr3 always start to lag then crash to home beceause ram gets very low ( bad ram management ?)
tried all official available roms, trie all available custum roms, the phone still slow, but sightley better with lilttle more free ram
the only occasion where the phone is smooth is when wifi/data off, n o background apps, and exploring the menu , also after factory reset, but gets bogged down as soon as you install few social apps that always like to stay in background...
i hope you don't get xperia sp
i tried all tweaks, they don't help much..

Wew i don't know if it was that bad. I've tried Xperia L and i'm pretty satisfied with it's performance, but unfortunately it has a very bad screen quality. You can't use 2 fingers at the same time on it, nice phone but destroyed by ****ty screen LOL
Btw, how if xsp was compared to xl? I only can imagine xsp's performance with that way
i tried xperia s, sp, ion, and all of lag very bad after few weeks from a fresh install , even after fresh install, you can see it freeze when installing apps specially, or receiving notifications. all are the same ****. only sony phone i used that doesn't lag is xperia z1
no matter what it won't bog down, but it has ghost screen that sony won't fix, replaced the phone 3 times, and always i end up with the same ghost typing my screen when the phone heats up, so i sold it yesterday. now i think it's not worth paying much money for expensive phone, samsung s3 has nice screen, i am interrested in the i9305, my brother had the 9300 it was laggy too
so if you have 9305,, i ask if it lag or no, very simple question

Ive owned both, and I have to say the lte variant is a cracking phone! Best hardware in its time. Vs the moto g 2014 which can be picked up for around the same priced (although s3 lte will be used or refurbished to be as cheap) its great. The extra ram is the key here, thats why the sp (which I also have owned) sucks hard, as does the standard s3 on stock, although it was pretty good on cm11

Scrolling smoothness

Some phones exhibit choppy scrolling, especially when navigating long web pages when multiple apps are running in the background. Rate this thread to express how you smooth scrolling feels on the LG G6 under such conditions. A higher rating indicates that scrolling is always buttery smooth, even when you're reading a 10,000 word article on "how to kiss a girl".
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Terrible scrolling! My kindle fire 7 rooted has better scrolling. Unbelievable a flagship phone performs like this.
Scrolling and all around performance is excellent on my G6. No complaints at all.

My Lenovo P2 has smoother scrolling than this. It has Snapdragon 625 and costs $300.
Very disappointed
I am having the scroll lag issues since I got my G6. I have factory reset it multiple times. No gain. I have enabled Forced GPU rendering to no avail. I disabled HW overlays but gets disabled automatically. I don't know whats wrong here. Other than this scrolling issue, I am very happy with this phone.

I guess you are mentioning about the Google Chrome scrolling lag? Try Ad Blocker to remove the ads, A Snapdragon 821 device like the LG G6 , One Plus 3T or the Google Pixel offers smooth performance without any kind of micro stutter. LG G6 is surprising smoother than the newer Snapdragon 835 or the Exynos 8895 device Galaxy S8!
Not just Google Chrome

Thank you for your response. No, I am not taking about just Google Chrome. Its almost every app where there is some kinda scrolling. Examples include chrome, Firefox, Facebook, 9gag, Reddit, even XDA. Its everywhere man. Also, I do have adblocker installed.
Mine scrolls pretty, pretty smoothly in all those apps and using Adguard. There might be a problem with yours...
I've got no scrolling issues at all. Wanna test scrolling download 9gag and enable scroll with volume keys. Hold down on the volume key. Truly there's no lag at all in my phone. Maybe, just maybe some scroll blur which is nothing to not expect. But truly no lag.
Always having problem with this phone. My Galaxy S6 was much smoother overall, no single stutter in comparison with my new G6. Basically with the G6 I came back to the days of LG G3, still the same software experience.
Usually is fine. Wish I could turn off scroll animations but US997 model doesn't offer the option without custom rom.

The lag is killing me

Hey all!
I'm very curious. My Honor 5X is unbelievably slow (read: laggy) despite having 2 gigs of RAM and the Snapdragon 616 - which is an octacore chip for God's sake.
I can't even explain how terrible the experience is. Sometimes I can't even pick up calls. Opening system apps like Dialer, contacts etc takes 6-8 seconds - YES, SECONDS - on average. This has been since Day 1.
I attributed the lag to buggy software (Huawei's official ROM) and switched to Lineage OS 14.1 but damn there has been absolutely no improvement.
Many people suggested clearing the cache, removing unused apps (the age old advice for android users) when the phone gets slow but I don't have more than 25 apps (which is restraint on my part), I make sure there's no clutter, wipe the caches regularly but still nothing.
I started blaming the Snapdragon 616 for this when switching to LineageOS didn't work. Didn't let anyone I know buy a phone with Snapdragon's 600 line of SoCs but it just doesn't make sense. My friend's Moto G4 has the Snapdragon 617 and it works fine. Even the Moto Z Play has the Snapdragon 625 and its one of good mid rangers on the market!
Need your opinions on what the problem could be.
Also if anyone here has the Huawei Honor 5X, how has your experience been with this absolute **** excuse for a phone?
I'm on LineageOS 14.1 latest nightly and opening the dialer takes probably 1 or 2 seconds max.
It really feels like your phone has a hardware problem if wiping everything doesn't make it better.
The phone is pretty snappy in day to day use for me, not fast like a Pixel or a OP5 but still pretty damn fast.
I don't have much apps in the background either.
Consider using your warranty to see if the phone is not defective.
I have it and often switch roms. I experience lags but not as severe as yours.
EMUI is laggy, but custom roms works good with this device. Fluid enough as a daily driver. May be your hardware is getting somewhat inefficient. 5x is my first and last buy from huwaei.

Default setting of that is 1x. There should be no problems with that.
The 617 and 625 are more superior to 616. However, try to factory reset, if it's still the same, ask for a replacement immediately if you have warranty.

Yes only if you are accessing files that are stored on SD card.
A lower class SD card will generally have slow write/read speeds.

Talking about lag, why would you even be on stock EMUI ROM on honor 5x? EMUI is a heavy skin for a low end SD 616 CPU.
The only way to get rid of those lags is to install a custom ROM. Period.

How about removing the sd card and test for sometimes. If it makes any difference then you got the root cause. If it doesn't then something on your firmware causing which you can test further with installing custom rom, crdroid, aosp based, slim rom, aokp etc

tab s6 without option to force gpu

I have an SM T865

I tried several times Force Gpu rendering but it doesn't have this option in the developer options.
only 4x MSAA
does anyone know why?
I was wondering the same thing. I'm not having any issues with CODM though I've only had the device a couple of days though. Hopefully someone will chime in.

I can't explain to you exactly what it does but I've had it turned on on every device I've had for years. And I can tell you for sure with 100% positivity
That I had considerable better battery life. Especially with the last two devices I've used which were the Razer phone and Razer phone 2.

I'm playing on medium graphics, max fps.
Lowering the fps to very high makes it look so bad that I dont even want to play br anymore.
Edit: i just tried it on very high fps medium graphics. Black screen 2x during the match.
Also fps very high gives me a headache. XD
Anyways tried so many settings, also in developer mode. Nothing helps. And I've played alot, currently 9300 ranked XP in BR. 1 or 2 crashes during every game.

I'm with you there I can lower the graphics to medium but I don't wanna lower the fps from max at all. It's something on the game side for sure. I come from playing on a Razer phone 2 and this used to happen even in multiplayer but this is the first time I've experienced it in a long while. Hopefully they get it fixed. I never in a million years expected Fortnite to run smoother then CODM on this device but it does. Lol!
Oh almost forgot are you using force 4x MSAA in dev option? It'll help with graphics if that's what you like.
And you've got 9300 ranked xp in BR with it crashing like this? Is the tab s6 the only device you play on? If so sir my hats off to you geez that's amazing.

haha yeah, I've reached 10.075 XP now. I crash 2 or 3 times each game.
4x msaa enabled yes, same with the "disable hw overlays"
Ever since my last post switched to low graphics with medium fps. It looks so bad but at least I only crash 1 time a game. The moment someone runs sideways though, I'm doomed because of the framerate. Hard to hit them.
Also noticed I crash more often when I play with friends.
I reached legendary mp halfway of April, basically only been playing BR these past 1,5 month thats why the high amount of XP. Would have been way higher without all the black screen losses.

Yeah its software related but its cod specific. They started blaming it on android 10 but it also happens on android 9.
It has gotten worse every new update so you cant blame it all on android.
On android 9 I noticed it getting a little bit worse every new season/update but still it was occasionally so I was ok with it.
Then android 10 came out and it got really really bad. Multiple times during the same game.
I ended up resetting and going back to android 9. Still black screens happened but it was 1x every 2 or 3 games.
22 May update got released and it got as bad as on android 10. Multiple crashes/black screen. (I'm not the only one, people on reddit noticed also increase after may 22 update)
Seeing as there was no difference between android 9 and android 10 anymore, I fully reset tablet back to android 10. At least on android 10 my tablet has the latest security updates.
So at this moment it doesnt matter anymore if you are on android 9 or 10. Cod crashes.
Tomorrow a new cod update gets released so lets hope that fixes things.
Also we should be expecting a new tab s6 update soon also if samsung keeps its promise. Quarterly updates, last update has March patch so June patch makes sense.

That's incredible XP. Lol! This was the first season I pushed in ranked was able to reach master 2 on both BR and Multiplayer. But I was playing on my RP2 there's no way I could have done it on the tab s6 with all the crashes. Your right it does look Bad at those settings BR isn't my fav game mode so I basically stopped playing after I reached the goal i had set. But I have been running the settings at Max everything and all other options turn on. I didn't pay another 700 for a tablet to run medium graphics you no what I'm saying. The frame rate difference from the tab s6 to the RP2 is crazy I never imagined it but it is. Even though CODM isn't 120hz supported I always ran 120 in my game booster settings and I'm miles better on the RP2. It's just so much smoother.
Maybe the CODM Devs will get it worked out. Im a controller player also I hope they finally add support for regular BT controllers not just Xbox and PS4. It's so janky feeling it should be so much better I no it's a mobile game but still who would have every thought we'd be gaming on phones and tablets why not use a controller if you can. I no some people like touch screen I just can't get it I'm a 80s kid I've always used a controller. Lol!
Something else I've noticed as of lately in Dev settings. Bluetooth Gatt Service always running at first I thought I had BT scanning still on but no. No scanning nothing at all Bluetooth related on and this is still running. I had a issue with a wallpaper last week when I tried to set said wallpaper my tablet shut down went into a boot loop. Ended up having to factory reset to get it back on. Scared me to death any way I no before this happened that I never saw this BT service running by itself. I'm kind of OCD about things running in the background. Anyone no how I can get rid of this? Or no what it is and why it needs to be running?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Question Laggy UI and bad real world performance

I recently went from a oneplus 5 to the nord 200 when I switched to t-mobile because of the free promotion. Before I got it I did a little bit of research on the processor and storage speed and didn't expect much of a difference in performance because the snapdragon 480 seems to be fairly powerful and the nord has the same UFS 2.1 storage as my old phone.
I was pretty disappointed to find in my use the phone about 1/2 the time the phone was pretty sluggish in the general user experience and app launch times were significantly longer. May be placebo, but I disabled digital wellbeing, and all the tmobile bloatware and it may have helped a little. I remember reading oneplus heavily throttled some of their phones in recent history. I may switch back to my old phone.
I know the device is relatively new, do you guys think it will get better with software updates or is this just how it is?
I found turning on "Mobile data always active" in the developer options massively improved performance in my apps (at least where online load times and download speeds in-game were concerned)
Did you just get your phone recently? After setting up this phone for the first time, I also noticed the device was extremely slow, with all the app and software updates happening in the background. After all the updates were installed, I turned the phone off for about a day, and performance went to normal. It's not as fast as a flagship and there are minor hiccups here and there, but that's about what I expected from a 400 series SoC.
My original report was the day after I set everything up, I disabled the permissions for the launcher which did improve the responsiveness of the launcher, but application performance and launch times are still slow compared to my old device and not what I would expect from a phone of this spec.
I'm pretty confident this phone is a victim of oneplus' recently reported throttling for battery life. I was curious and compared geekbench scores (which aren't throttled under oneplus' list) and both the nord and my oneplus 5 got fairly similar scores for both cpu and compute. I tried out a browser benchmark motionmark which benches graphics performance. The nord got a 25 and the oneplus 5 got a 189... I ran the test again to make sure but got similar results.
That graphics should be coming from gpu and not cpu though....
I tested cpu and compute on geekbench, compute is a measure of gpu performance. The nord scored a little higher than the 5 in that.
I would assume oneplus' throttling would effect cpu and gpu but even if not, my oneplus 5 scoring almost 8x as high does not seem anywhere near normal

Same experience here, i picked up this phone expecting at least a decent experience but still get bad slow not usable for everyday tasks sometimes.
Im not expecting a flagship performance of course but this is far from decent in my experience.
I hope android 12 will solve many performance issues. Or custom fw
I'm about to throw away this phone into trash. Did not expect so weak dev community activity. The laggy interface is almost unusable if you constantly swap between apps and find them unloaded from RAM. All my text or uploaded content just disappear. It is very frustrating experience. I never had this behaviour with my 2/32 gb xiaomi.

If you're really at your wit's end, have you considered installing a GSI? I've tried Phh's AOSP w/ gapps, and once you register your device with Google, it works flawlessly (except safetynet/drm) and is a million times faster than stock. Or I'd be more than happy to take your device off your hands.

You know, custom ROMs don't just appear out of thin air. Someone has to take the time to bring up a device and make it stable, and it's not an easy task. I would say to be patient and just accept the fact that there's no guarantee that this device will get custom ROMs.

Other than pictures from the camera being degraded compared to stock and having to install apps from the Play Store/changing a few settings in the Settings app, everything seems to work fine
