Bad battery life - Xperia Z4 Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ever since I update a few firmwares back I've been getting really bad battery. In battery stats it shows tablet idle and after about 12 hours of idle it goes down by 10% when I wanna use it its on like 30% or below. I have root and custom kernel on stock rom 305fw. This was the same before unlocking bootloader its quitr irritating ive tried a fresh ftf no luck. I even have greenify installed. The tablet does also go into deep sleep so that works. I never had this issue on 5.0.2 or on my Z2 tablet. My Z2 tablet was on 5.1.1 when I last used it and it would go down by 1% after 24hrs with root and greenify locked bl. Any solutions would be appreciated thanks.

That doesn't really help much. Can you install BetterBatteryStats, let it run for quite some time and post some screens from that? It might be handy to reboot your tablet after installation/configuration and let BBS display stats from 'Boot'. Stats I'm interested about: Kernel WakeLocks, Partial WakeLocks, CPU States and Process.
I personally have the greatest battery life I've experienced on any Android device on this tablet. It's insane. I don't have it with me now, but I'll check out what I've done to accomplish it. Nothing fancy if I remember correctly, just Greenify with only Aggressive Doze enabled. Also latest .305 firmware and AndroPlusKernel v40.

Yeah you have the same things install as I do. I dont think i have agressive Doze enabled though so that might be something. I do have Xposed installed. I will try better battery stats later as I dont have the tablet with me at the moment. I will also post some shots thanks for the suggestions.

Just installed betterbatterystats now gonna let I run after rebooting. Tablet is on 53% at the moment only had 30mins screen on. I dont think Doze is working propperly. Its had 3 days tablet idle. I dont use it much it is idle quite often but this bad battery life is one of the reasons I dont use it because I fear that it will be low on bat and while im using it it will just turn off because the battery gets to 0%.

Here are the screenshots from betterbatterystats the only thing I notice thats unusual is that it says wifi has been on when ive set ot to only be on when plugged in in settings.
Edit: since taking those screenshots its gone down to 39% in 7 mins from 41%

Will look into these better later, but so far I don't see any weird things. Deep Sleep is great. When booted, was the tablet at 100%? I guess not.
To determine if your battery has worn out; can you install AccuBattery and collect some data?

It wasnt at 100% before rebooting after installing betterbatterystats. But it came from 100% like it drained down to about 53% I think then I installed betterbatterystats. Is 4days of standby good from 100% to 40%?
Edit: will post screens from AccuBattery later after I let it run for abit.

[Q] Serious Battery Drain

I really have a bad battery drain, I fully charged my new Samsung Galaxy S2 from 0% battery to 100% when it was off (after a calibration).
I have set all tips for battery consuming etc, etc.. I installed BetterBatteryStats and it seems like gtalk_async_conn (Google Services) used 17% of the battery in the last 40 minutes.
Is there anything I can do to disable this? I disabled the sign-in in Gtalk settings, but it's still wasting my battery.

It's not in the list, I can't find "Google services" either.
Here is a screenshot, I can't find anything about this service / process. How do I freeze it? I do not use Gtalk.

if you are using BetterBatteryStats no need for an own thread, there's one already (use search).
In your OP you mixed count and percent, your problem is more than gtalk if your consumption is as you said.
following the hot-to for bbs start with giving us some details about awake and screen on but do yourself a favor, let a mod close this thread and post your questions together with the missing info in the right thread.

GTalk has not used 17% as you mistakenly believe. It has used only 3.6% as per your attached screenshot. So GTalk is not the only service responsible for your battery drain.
That said, it is a fact acknowledged by almost all the owners of SGS II that Low Battery Life and Low Volume of sound output are the two sore points of this phone. Samsung should seriously do something to improve Battery Life and Sound volume of this phone. Hope something comes up in the next updates.
Maps also should be running. Must be also one of the reasons.
And juice defender also consume battery.

3 days???? Which ROM? A lot of people exaggerate here. I'm on CF Rooted stock KF3 with 200+ apps and it lasts for only about 18 hours in normal usage.
i also want to see that 3 day....
Yup juice defender is nothing if you know what your doing.
Example : if you an app and minimize it it will be running in background if you wont be using the app for quite awhile kill the app using task killer. If example you use facebook app. And you u are using it frequently but you kill it and reopen it. It will consume more battery. Only kill app that you wont use.
And disable data went not using and use 2g network when not using data.

i guess we are in the same boat then, better battery stats also show me nothing suspicous,
with little to normal use, my s2 can hardly go for 6 to 7 hours, everything off, only 3g on..
that is on stock rom, im now testing CM7 build 38
Charged 100% go recovery wipe battery stats..
It take sometime for the bateery to function properly.. a day or two.. so after the calabaration let it go to nearly 10% then charge till 100% without disturbing it.

most definitely, i was a big fan of Juice Defender Ultimate but the reality is it actually uses up almost as much as it saves, this was pointed out to me and it is 100% true, since i froze it yesterday im having superb battery life my phone wont die until tomorrow i estimate ill get up to around 40 hours with about 1 call, 15/20 texts and medium internet usage, and some music so far and ive 47% left, the battery was charged to 100% at 23.50 last night and i left it on all night with data enabled and the drain was only 6% in almost 8 hours..

[Q] MIUI and SGS2

Right i know youve had a million people ask what the best rom/kernel/modem is best for battery life and i also know their is no actual answer for this.
Im not askin that question... basically..
My girlfriends phone battery life is terrible no matter which miui rom/kernel/modem she is using she never really gets more than 10-12 hours battery life and this is with basically no usage whatsoever - litterally 2-3 15 minute phone calls, a half hour of music a few texts throughout the day and then intermittent facebook usage, no gaming no videos no long calls nothing else...
at night if she doesnt charge her phone it will go from 95% battery to 50-60% by the morning (6-8 hours later).
She doesnt have any background apps (i dont think - pretty sure) nothing intensive is ever running on the phone, and shes a very light user...
Basically i want to know WTF is goin on because she keeps moaning to me about it being a **** phone that she cant use for more than half a day without it dying.
She is runnin the latest MIUI 2.1.20 (5 or 6th version ive flashed over the past 6 months) with MIUI kernel and the ke3 modem i recently wiped the phone/cache/dalvik/internal storage.. EVERYTHING and then did a fresh install of everything to see if she would get a better battery - but no difference...
is there anything i can do to test if something is wrong? test background apps? test deep sleep mode?
i know battery life isnt spectacular on these phones but this definitely isnt as its supposed to be - 10-12 hours!!
Ive tried the siyah kernel with no difference, and there just isnt any apps or anything intensive running that i can stop to reduce the battery drain.
What can i do to solve this frustrating problem and stop her naggin me about it?
ANY help/pointers/advice/jokes would be greatly appreciated anything at all
Wakelocks, wakelocks and wakelocks. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
Oh i just remembered she did ONCE have an awesome version of MIUI that gave her 1-2 days of battery life with regular usage, but after about a month of using it she started gettin force closing on EVERYTHING, so i just updated it and it seemed fixed...
I dont know which version of MIUI it was but i know it was the last version before the *no service glitch* version of MIUI was released (something is telling me V1.9.16???) if somebody knows that would be a great help because i could re-flash that version back on and see if the battery starts working like it should

Stop posting for 10 minutes and do some reading. I don't know if that is what's wrong, because you haven't looked at the wakelocks yet.
i have read it all... and from what i gather this will tell me exactly what is destroying the battery? (causing wakelocks)
and then i can stop/removce/BURN the app thats doing it... thus solving the issue?
Right well the betterbatterystats app is installed, i guess i'll get her to leave it running for a day and post my findings...
i have found out she doesnt use an app for facebook, just the web browser, so basically nothing staring me in the face that could be causing the crap battery.
right well "mediascannerservice" is coming up at at 95.4% on partial wakelocks....
And in the battery usage settings folder its floating around 60%

Could be some dodgey media on her SD card keeping the media scanner running, best bet is to remove all media, videos, pics, etc, and see what happens.
Take a screenshot of the wake lock part of the screen.
Also use os monitor to see if anything is using a lot of CPU.

Depends what else is going on, but if she's not using the screen much and the media scanner is going nuts then yes, as I think that falls under Android os.
Would still be good to get that screenshot.

Bearing in mind these are taken after deleting that folder and also after only about half hour uplugged from charger
Oh and "screen on" is at 28.5% whereas awake is on 74.4% after about 40 minutes unplugged
any thoughts guys?
Was it the media scanner goin crazy and i/she should now expect a half decent battery?
From what you've said it seems it was a media scanner issue. Try it for a day & see how it goes. That's the only way you're going to find out.

What's the best general radio for power usage? [Added betterbatterystats+ dumps.]

I'm currently using CM 10.1.3 STABLE with the radio included in the latest JB update for the UK. However, with this, battery usage when using mobile data is terribly high (I've tried two different batteries) and is eating about 1% per minute, even I know that's ridiculous.
Are there any suggestions?
Thanks.
Yeah, you need to use the one which gives you the best signal. That'll then be the one with the lowest battery drain as your phone isn't searching for a signal constantly.
To do that, test the modems released by your carrier for your region /country. If you still don't find one that works for you, flash whichever one takes your fancy. Don't flash modem +RIL as you're on custom rom, you want modem only.
The other thing is, have you installed betterbatterystats? My guess is that it's something eating your battery, not the phone searching for signal. Find the xda thread for it and follow the instructions in the OP to figure out what's causing the drain.

It's no use to rely on BBS whilst you're using the phone. You need to look at the stats after you have left it idle for 4 hours or so. It's also not very useful to post the stats only, post the dumpfile after it's been idle for 4 hours. If you post the dump in the BBS thread the guys there are kind enough to analyze the dump.

Did you try and delete the batterystats.bin in /data/system. ?
And try recalibrating your battery:
-Recharge your phone,
-Use the phone as you normally do and let it Discharge,
-When it Discharges and Turns off, Recharge it again,
-Do that for 2 days.
Maybe it will work, im not sure try it. But as i see i think that the batteries are weak or something. You know the batteries have some sort of a self remembering method that remembers the usage and Discharging of a battery.

Spotting a weak battery
I found it here.
Cell phone shuts off
If the battery’s capacity has shrunk, it will still read "full" even if there is very little power in it, and the phone will quickly run out of energy and turn off. Or, the phone could be at fault. Borrow a battery from another phone of the same type; if the phone works with the other battery, it’s time for a new battery.
Charge does not last
A cell phone battery should be good for around 24 hours between charges. Dramatically decreasing battery life is a sign of a dying battery.
Swollen battery
Sometimes swelling is visible even with the battery in place. To test for swelling, remove the battery and place it phone side down on a level surface. If it can wobble or spin, it must be replaced or it could begin to leak and damage the phone.
Hard spot
Squeeze a battery along its phone-side edge; if it has a hard spot, replace it.
Visible corrosion
Check the contacts for corrosion or other damage. If this could be a result of water damage, the battery should be replaced as further damage may be hidden inside the battery.
Water damage indicated
Cell phone batteries often have an indicator strip that changes color if water damage has occurred. Some cell phones also have such a strip inside the battery area; know what color the strip should be and what changes indicate damage. Damaged batteries should be replaced.
Excessive heat
If a lithium ion battery gets unusually hot during use or charging, it is getting worn out and should be replaced. Nickel-based batteries normally get hot during charging, so this is not a trouble sign for them.
Hope i helped you.

Battery question

I've had my m8 for 4 days now. I've seen people post their battery stats and they get great battery life. I have gsam installed and my battery life compared to others doesn't look too good. Do I need to wait a few more days to see how good the battery is on this phone?
Sent from my HTC One_M8
Yes
Most people that are getting a day's + out of the battery I suspect have stuff like autosync etc turned off. I'm one of those type of people. Averages per complete charge according to Gsam on my phone is currently at 1d 11.3h (7h 24m active) Screen 4h 13m (3h 1m Max). I got my phone on July 30th but didn't install Gsam until Aug 7th so the current averages are calculated from Aug 7th.
There is a battery thread in the general M8 forum that has a lot of good information in it.

The link I provided in my reply has great information in it. I'd list stuff but I suggest reading through that thread. All the battery life experts are there.
As far as Gsam - some experts for that app are in that thread as well. The averages in Gsam are a running average over each time you charge your phone to 100% (this can be reset in preferences which also has a bunch of other calculation settings).

App Sucker - It's in Gsam
There are more apps and services listed if I scrool down that is just the first screen. I know the other thread can be a lot to read. I just read a few pages at a time. 138 pages in a thread..........
You could root and get wakelock access but if you don't want to root I suggest disable all apps and accout auto sync and location services. Then you can monitor with Gsam over a day then start turning stuff you want to use back on one at a time and see how it effects your battery life.

Great idea. Thanks

Can I disable at&t hotspots and city ID?
Sent from my HTC One_M8
Sure unless you use those. Actually AT&T hotspots may be a big help if you disable it. What it does is scan with WiFi for AT&T hotspots so if you never use them disable it so it won't scan all the time. City ID I'm not familiar with. I know I disabled it along with other apps I never use.
These are my stats for the day. I noticed that my radio is the same as my battery life. Is that bad? I also changed my data settings to 4g
Edit:
I'm using the XDA app and it won't let me upload.

Are these stats good? The held awake time is still too high for me. My radio has always been the same as my battery life. Is that normal?
@ cjbart1009
Looks good to me. I'll take 19 hours of battery life any day of the week. :good:
Gsam reports my phone radio as being on the entire charge cycle as well. My only guess on that is there is a small trickle current to the phone radio so it will receive calls even if it is asleep.

But look at my held awake time. I could get so much more out of this thing if it wasn't for that. Also I only get 4 hours most of screen time out of this.

Question Why is the battery so bad?

Screen on Time (SoT) of only 4,5 hours on latest xiaomi.eu ROM. GSAM Battery Monitor reports Android system is hogging all the battery. I've let my battery go to 0% and slow charge to 100%, I've used the "adb shell cmd package bg-dexopt-job" command to optimise the apps. But these steps made not a significant difference
I haven't tried removing all the xiaomi apps through adb but I doubt it will make the SoT go up to 7h like normal current phones in this price range. Is there anything we can do?
I am on official MIUI 12.5.5.0 and i am facing the same Issue, android system is taking up to 30-40% of battery, i have tried pretty much everything, factory reset, debloating the bloatware, discharge to 0 then charge to 100%, switching to 60 hz refresh rate and after all that, i am still hitting 4-5 hrs of SOT, which is insanely bad...
It's not the hardware problem, it's the MIUI problem, our best bet is to wait for new MIUI update that MIGHT fix this.
If someone thinks that this is hardware problem, i would like to hear your argument for this, but i am 100% sure that this is MIUI's problem, since android system is the problem.
last eu is very hungry rom..some are back to 12.0.3 or more recent...or you have to move to GSI roms...
What is the SoT on GSI ROMS?
The oldest ROM on xiaomi.eu is 12.0.7.0, but it's a fastboot.zip ROM, will it wipe internal storage or is it ok to dirty flash?

I do think it will wipe internal storage but i am not 100% sure, since it's an older version
So I just used the windows_fastboot_update_rom.bat from xiaomi.eu_multi_MI11Lite5G_V12.0.7.0.RKICNXM_v12-11-fastboot so it wouldn't wipe internal data. But after that I got stuck in MIUI recovery 5.0 loop and no way out except wiping data.. I'm waiting for it to boot up now, and keep you posted on the battery
Is there a way to understand what Android System is doing? If we could find out which processes are constantly running then we may change setting to prevent this? For ex: is it constantly trying to send feedback to Xiaomi or Google to improve user experience etc? I think I enabled those while I set up the phone.
Also battery goes down 1% every hour during the night while the phone is idle. I think it's too much. I really like the phone but I am very close to sending it back.

if you re from stock to stock, normally no wipe..if from beta to stock or reverse, then wipe
I've charged the phone up to 100% and since then let it watch YouTube, Netflix and VLC. Phone is now at 70% with 2h 50min SoT. Screen was mostly between 10-50% brightness. Seems promising, I'll post tomorrow about the idle drain and other stats
Update:
So there was still some idle drain but I left my bluetooth connected tot my headphones alle night. Overall the battery performance is way better than before. I also did disable traceur and optimise apps with dexopt-job FYI.

7h Sot, android system is still pulling a lot but this is way better than before. I'll use the xiaomi debloater next and see if we can squeeze more out of it.

So what about your experience after a few days of usage. And what did you miss compared to the 12.5 update? I'm considering downgrade because of the bad sot right now.

It is a bit better, not always 7h SoT but 5,5 at least. But I had some problems after I used Xiaomi ADB debloat tool, I removed too much and it was creating wakelocks. I dirty flashed the rom again so I had everything xiaomi back. So I still need to test more .
In terms of missing out:
When you swipe down for messages or quick tiles, you cannot move between those two. You have to go up again and then down on the other side. A bit annoying.
Sometimes when you get new messages, an old message is show in the floating preview.
I don't see any concerning wakelocks now so I'll report the nightly idle drain and SoT tomorrow again.

Strange this is...
Today I tested out the connection.
Right now I am on 4,5 hrs sot and still have 43% battery left. This is on 12.5.5.
Only things that's different then the last days is that I'm on wifi and I have used my cellular data only for half an hour.
When I look to my battery stats I see that it's steady the whole day, EXCEPT for the half an hour I went from home. Then you see abnormal usage of Android-system resources.
So, this could be something....
Yes, something wrong with the radio/modem. Are you in 5g area or lte?
