[Kate / SE] Very confused about modding ... I need help... - Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Questions & Answers

... sorry but I'm very confused ...
I'm reading the possible on the network, but the result is I always get confused more despite having a certain familiarity in modding having modded a galaxy nexus, and an LG G2 on which I installed TWRP recovery and various CyanogenMod ROMs.
Unlocking the bootloader in kate/SE, in an official or unofficial way, is still very difficult or almost impossible?
I often read of modified TWRP recovery, which sometimes give problems and sometimes it does not ...is it possible just put the official TWRP for kenzo?
If I can somehow install a TWRP, is possible to easily install the CyanogenMod ROM (after flashing ROM flashing kate modem is needed) and provide CM updates simply by flash new ROM via TWRP recovery?
Thks in adv

Nope! It's easy as 123... Please, check:
http://en.miui.com/thread-345728-1-1.html - for unlocked "emmc_appsboot.mbn".
You can also download ALKA TWRP, rename to "recovery.img", and replace it in fastboot ROM (image folder).
(As well as "emmc_appsboot.mbn emmc_appsboot.mbn", downloaded from the link above.)

I read official unlocking was successful for very very few owners and
such unofficial unlocking gave problems to many others, like bootloop etc...
is that wrong...?

I could not unlock my "kate" officially.
I've tried the method posted above, and works like a charm!
No bootloop, at all...

Thaknk yo so much for yr reply
I remain with the feeling of more complexity and less certainty, than the modding of the galaxy nexus and also the LG G2...

Official unlock works fine.
I have a Kate and unlocked it officially.
Just make sure to flash the global developer ROM, log into your MI account on the phone and press the "bind device to account" button inside the security settings menu before attempting to unlock.

I also got my Kate to unlock officially after using updater on phone to flash global beta rom.then in developer options clicked MI unlock status then linked phone to account. After that unlocked first try after many many failed attempts on global stable.

Nice news and info, thks so much!
But... why so many people can't officially unlock their kate having 50pc error...??
Which version of miui unlock tool and Global Dev. ROM you used when officially unlock yr kate?

I used global beta 6.11.24 and MIflash unlock_1.1.1111.1_en

Thks for reply and info

Redmi Note 3 32GB Mediatek version - unlock bootloader

Hi, I need help. My girlfriend bought a Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 32GB / 3GB RAM Mediatek Helio X10 version.
I want to upgrade the firmware because it needs an upgrade. Since she bought it, February, it didn't updated one single time, and it has some bugs that upset her. So, here is the problem.
I already asked for permission from Xiaomi to unlock the bootloader, and already got it. When I tried to unlock, got the 50% problem (Current account is different from the account info on the device). Since then, tried to flash (from the Updater App) the developer ROM, also with no success (couldn't verify package).
The last option, I believe I have, is to manually flash (using MI FLASH software) the developer ROM and after that, unlock the bootloader to finally install the MIUI 8.0 (that's the goal of all this, with the unlocked bootloader).
So, how can I do this? Suggestions, tips, tutorials, guides or experiences, everything is welcome!
You have to go to latest Beta/developer Version and the Unlock should work...
Else just Update miui, because maybe the Bugs are fixed

I already solved it by 'hard flashing" the miUI 8... because that's the version she wanted. Didn't try to flash the miUI 6 [developer] because I was lazy, but mainly because I didn't see any gains for her from doing it [unlocking the bootloader].
Thank you 2 for the replies!
Hi Guys,
I've been searching for 2 days now for a clear guide on how to unlock the bootloader for the Mediatek version and haven't found anything other than the official way. Can someone point me in the right direction please?
Thanks.

Welcome to Redmi Note 3 family.
Kenzo or Kate?
Snapdragon standard variant is called as a 'kenzo' and special edition Redmi note 3 with different radios version is called as a 'kate'.
Global/ Chinese?
There are two types of MIUI ROMs.
1. Global
2. Chinese
Difference in these both ROMs is that, you will find some chinese material here and there in chinese ROM. Global is fully in english.
Again there are two subtypes of these two ROMs which are Stable and Dev/Beta. Sometimes Beta/Dev ROM is also called as a 'weekly'.
So basically most of the devices have 4 official MIUI ROMs which are:
1. Global Stable
2. Global Beta or Global Dev
3. Chinese Stable
4. Chinese Beta or Dev
There is no connection between the type of ROM and unlocking bootloader.
Bootloader unlock method?
Since you know there are two methods to unlock the bootloader, I will discuss them one by one.
1. Official
You don't require to flash any latest or dev or chinese ROM to unlock using official method.
First of all you need a persmission from Xiaomi to unlock the bootloader.
Goto http://en.miui.com/unlock/
Login here. The account should be same as the one is on your phone.
Write the reasons for unlocking.
After that Xiaomi will grant you the permission. If you don't receive any SMS from Xiaomi, just check on the above link.
Even if you get the permission its most likely you will not able to unlock nootloader on first attepmt. But don't worry, try again after few days.
Use MiUnlock tool. Once you get the permision, that tool will be available on the above link or you can always download from here http://en.miui.com/unlock/download_en.html
2. Unofficial
I have unlocked my phone by unofficial method 6-7 months ago and I still have no issues at all.
Open this folder https://mega.nz/#F!LUxlHJBC!RK5_8fta4XWAVFqWoWrvjQ
It has everything what you need for unlocking bootloader unofficially.
Just follow this guide and you are good to go: GUIDE
You might have to disable Driver Signature Verification if you are using Windows 8 or higher (google it)
Recovery?
I will suggest you only and only following recoveries:
If you have unlocked your bootloader officially, You must use ZCX only.
If you have unlocked your bootloader unofficially, you must use either Alka or Cofface
Here is a thread where you will find everything about recoveries.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/redm...twrps-t3406708
All download links are in that thread.
Hope this will help! Happy flashing!

Can someone link me the newest guide for unlocking?

I recently got tired of using MIUI and since my phone is already out of warranty, I'm looking a totally legit way of unlocking my BL and flashing LOS 14.1. However, there are tons of guides with conflicting information, broken links, non updated methods which is expected of the excellent support for this device but leaves a new comer to this forum confused.
This is alluded to the fact that we have a strong community of developers who are always coming up with ingenious solutions and information which was relevant a month ago is soon deprecated.
Can someone give me a definitive guide to unlock my BL legally, flash TWRP and then flash LOS?
PS: I already got the unlock permission from Xiaomi. So there's that.

If you already got the unlock permission from Xiaomi , why you just try unlocking using Miflash Unlock?
Try this tutorial from XDA:
1. Using Miflash Unlock (legal) http://bit.ly/2tkrvdo
2. [GUIDE][KENZO/KATE] Install LineageOS with locked bootloader http://bit.ly/2ndZhei
3. [GUIDE] [Unofficial BL Unlock] RN3 Pro & Pro SE [Flash the neccessary files only] http://bit.ly/2sPBYua
I am unlocking using Miflash Unlock, but if you got a problem maybe you can try third tutorial first.

I followed your advise and used the third tutorial for unofficial BL unlock as I couldn't get the Mi unlock working beyond 99% and got stuck with installing LOS 14.1 (latest build) with error 7.
Turns out, this is an expected error if the BL is not unlocked officially.
I created this thread so that I could avoid this exact issue. All so called guides and sticky posts are outdated and need to be updated

Need help with TWRP recovery install and/or root redmi note 4x bootloader unlocked

Hello,
I have been trying to install TWRP recovery in my bootloader unlocked xiaomi redmi note 4x phone with china stable ROM non-root device. I have tried multiple methods that I found in this web and somewhere else but unfortunately all failed and unable to install any kinds of recovery. I am also trying to root my device but failed every method I found. One main problem is I don't read chinese at all and my ROM is chinese version. I have been trying to install at least Global ROM so that I would understand english version and probably able to root my phone and ultimately use google play store. None worked so far for me.
I would really appreciate if you can help me resolve any one of my issues stated above.
Thank you very much

The language of chinese rom can be set as english.
Then you can flash chinese dev rom and use a built-in ROOT.
However, without twrp you can not flash gapps because the system part is encrypted, so you must unlock the bootloader and then flash twrp.
unlocker:http://en.miui.com/unlock/ (maybe you need a chinese mi account, I can provide one with you)

I had been experiencing "remote: size too large" problem with a lot of methods that I found on xda forum and other reputable forums but was unsuccessful with any method. When I tried cofface method from the link that you mentioned, it was successful on the first attempt. My device is xiaomi redmi note 4x china stable rom. Now I can't wait to flash other custom ROMs . Hey guys I am using redmi 4x I have installed Oreo pixel experience rom in it.... Can any one help me how to root this device in Android Oreo 8.0.

Important! Please read before tweaking your Mi 8

Context:
Over the few months i have seen many Mi 8 owners who tweak their phone end up with a bricked device, of all the cases, a huge majority of them is due to the lack of research and jumping into modifying their phones before fully uinderstanding the situation (I almost made the mistake too, taking for granted that all android phones have minimal restrictions)
There are two things to take note of (especially if you decide to tweak your Mi 8/SE):
1. Xiaomi implemented a policy that prevents relocking of bootloader if you install a Global Rom on a China Variant Mi Phone
What this means: You cannot relock bootloader if your Mi8/SE is a China variant and you have Global Miui version installed (Developer/Stable)
Common mistake(s):
1. Avoid 'Clean and lock' option when using MiFlash. Only use 'Clean all' or 'Save user data' option
2. Do not relock your Mi8/SE if you are on Global Beta or Developer or Any MIUI rom that is Global
2. Google implemented a policy that prevents rollback to older Android versions for Android Oreo and above Roms. This is for 'Security' reasons and affects MIUI.
What this means: You cannot rollback to an older Miui version (Below Android 8.0) if you already you are currently on Andorid Oreo (i.e Miui 10) and up.
Common mistake(s):
1. Do not restore an old backup with Miui that has any Android version less than 8.0 from Miui 10 ( Android 8.0)
2. Do not install Miui 9 (Below Android 8.0) after installing Miui 10 (Android 8.0 Above)
*As of now: Developer version with ARB=1 has no ARB activated and it is safe to downgrade.*
*Tip: Ask yourself if the Android version you are about to install is lower than the Android version currently installed, if it is, DO NOT flash it. (Applicable if you are currently on Android 8.0 and up)
3. Downgrading/Upgrading Miui Roms with Locked Bootloader.
Same rules applies: Global Variant use Global Miui Rom, China Variant use China Miui Rom
* Switching between Stable and Developer on locked bootloader possible: Use Miflash or Xiaomi Tool. (Upgrading use updater app "select package"option)
4. Safetynet/ Playstore Certification with unlock bootloader.
You can pass Safetynet with Magisk 17.1 onwards for use with Banking/Payment apps
More info:
* Flash Magisk upon clean wipe and after flashing your Rom.
* Dm-verity & Force encryption disabler is required.Download and flash before first boot from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/universal-dm-verity-forceencrypt-t3817389
* Encryption must be diabled for Magisk to work. Therefore encryption is not possible if you wish to pass Safetynet.
Please keep all of this in mind before you start tweaking your phone as you will run the risk of bricking your Mi 8/SE. After which, your Mi 8 becomes a very expensive paperweight. I hope this helps to clear things up for many people! Do know that while I disagree with Xiaomi's new anti-consumer policy, i also feel that it is YOUR responsiblility in your own actions, especially when you decide to modify your device and when you do modify anything (not just phones), there are always risks involved. When in doubt, it does no harm to Google it or just ask around in the forums. Moral of the story: Proceed with caution!
For those already bricked:
1. Contact Xiaomi Customer Service and try obtain EDL permission to peform Testpoint fix.
2. Bring your phone to a Mi Store and hope that they can help you with it.
*In the case where my information is wrong, please correct me so that I can update accordingly for the benefit of everyone!
Have a nice day ahead and all the best in your phone tweaking adventures! Hopefully I helped you in clearing things up :good:

Same thing to me. I was not happy with the buggy MIUI10 CHina Dev Version and flashed via Fastboot 9.5.13 global stable.
Everything works fine.
I think this new policy of Xiaomi sow, but if they want so. That they release at least the EDL Module for users that present the invoice of the device, showing that they have bought and are in trouble. The international market is very large, and those who live in other regions end up with hands tied and with a paper weight in hand. Since there are no Authorized in each country.
Thanks for your great and Important notifications.
1- Totally agree for note # 1 ( 1. Xiaomi implemented a policy that prevents relocking of bootloader if you install a Global Rom on a China Variant Mi Phone ).
2- For note #2 (2. Google implemented a policy that prevents rollback to older Android versions for Android Oreo and above Roms. This is for 'Security' reasons and affects Miui), i think as long as you are not downgrading to lower android version its fine regardless MIUI version.

Thanks for all your info, i have updated the OP for greater clarity!
The Mi 8 doesn't have anti rollback at the moment.
I never seen such many post about bricked phones ever in my entire life, the only thing i've read about this phone and the note 5 is post about bricked phone.
It is a crazy amount of ppl that have already bricked their phones.
Truly amazing, never seen this before.
NO ARB system on Mi 8 yet. The current situation is the china variant flashes Global Rom forgot to uncheck the lock bootloader on Miflash tool and ended up bricking.
It is important to add information about Xiaomi Deep Flash Cable which can help flash already bricked devices migrated from Chinese to Global and accidently locked bootloader. No EDL authorization needed as far as I read.

Global variant must have global ROM, China variant must have China ROM. Relocking is possible if u follow the rule above. Global phone with China ROM, relocking will brick, vice versa. Be careful! :good:

One more thing, don't relock after installing magisk, it either wouldn't relock as boot.img is modified or u will probably soft brick. U cant modify boot if u want to relock, correct me if I'm wrong

Yes
I bought my Mi8 and it had a fake Global ROM, it was a modified Chinese MIUI that looked like global with unlocked bootloader via the unofficial way .
So I locked the bootloader and installed MIUI 10 Beta China Developer and I am waiting 30 days for the official unlock . When the time comes how can I install Global stable MIUI 10 or at least the latest Global stable ?
