Curious about exactly how SIM Network Unlock Codes work - E 2015 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there fellow members, I have a question regarding SIM Network Unlock Codes, was wondering if the same NUC would work on other Moto E 2nd Gen XT1527 handsets (locked to Telus) or if there's a different NUC assigned to each individual device.

I haven't carrier unlocked a device in many years, but in the past the code was imei specific - my assumption is that is still the case, or people would just share codes.

[Q] is the Photon locked or unlocked by default?

Hi,
I'm kind of confused regarding the term locked/unlocked.
When I talked to Sprint, they told me that you can take the Motorola Photon to other countries (that use GSM), and simply buy a local SIM card. It's "unlocked", so you're free to use other SIM cards. BUT, she also said that in USA, the Photon has to use Sprint CDMA network. Was she just saying that to dissuade me from trying another US carrier on GSM?
So, is the Photon locked or unlocked?
On some other threads here (like this one), some of you refer to "unlocked bootloader". This is different than an "unlocked SIM card", which was what I was thinking of, right?
Are there other references to "unlocked" things that aren't related to SIM cards?
Thanks!
It does have an international unlocked Sim slot but the radio software is written to ignore USA gsm networks.so it will not work on another carrier here unless you unlock the bootloader and someone figures out how to rewrite the radio software, which they haven't yet.

Thanks for the response.
Another noob question. Rooting is different than simply unlocking a phone right? Or are the two terms used for the same thing? Rooting a phone gives you admin rights to install software that require higher levels of user access?
Where as unlocking (in this case) implies unlocking the SIM card to allow other GSM networks, or unlocking the radio to allow other US GSM networks?
That is, you can unlock some smartphones (allowing global SIM card use), but not have the phone rooted (not have admin rights)?
Unlocked has nothing to do with the sim card in our case. The sim slot is and always was unlocked from the start. Unlocked refers to basically the phones equivalent to a BIOS which allows us to rip out the os and install a new one aka custom Rom.

While the sim is unlocked it still won't work on US domestic gsm towers as the radio specifically blocks those regardless of sim lock/ unlock.

[Q]Verizon phone with other operator?

Hello guys. Currently I'm planning to get verizon contracted razr phone on amazon. But unfortunately I'm living outside of US and can't use Verizon SIM card.
As I understood there are no possiblilities to "compeletely unlock" bootloader. But, what about those safestrap\bootstrap things? Can it help to unlock SIM?
Or it's just about changing ROMs?
Is there are any possibilities to unlock a phone for use with any other operators?
Why not get an unlocked GSM Razr.
The Verizon Razr is CDMA and locked to Verizon and has nothing to do with the boot loader.
A SIM Lock and a locked bootloader are two ENTIRELY different things. None of our discussion pertains to SIM locking, which is something the carrier does to protect their subsidy, and can be unlocked by requesting the code from the carrier, usually with an associated fee.
However, unless the LTE Razr turns out to have international gsm radios like the Rezound, unlocking the Verizon model won't get you anywhere. I don't know of any compatible CDMA/LTE networks anywhere else in the world at this time. You need to buy the international GSM version of the RAZR, AFAIK there are no real differences other than the network type it uses.

(boost) sim unlocking and gsm capabilities

Hello all! I recently acquired a boost mobile Moto E (2nd gen) with LTE. I put a tmobile simcard in and nothing happens. Im assuming that means its locked.
Ive done some research and found that it has capabilities for gsm, cdma, lte, hspa+ with all the necessary basebands to operate on tmobile.
I wanted to see if anyone has successfully sim unlocked their sprint/boost phone to work with US GSM carriers?
Bump.. honestly anyone have any luck?
No answers on this? This could be handy
Sprint/Boost/Virgin/etc phones by default have a blacklist for domestic GSM networks. Many people have purchased and used the Boost Mobile version abroad without issues. It may be possible to remove it (Case in point, S4, Note 2, Note 3) but no one has done so yet for the Moto E from those carriers. If you are feeling brave, feel free to experiment with DFS (as referenced in another post in this forum) to see if you can perform a SEEM edit anywhere to disable the blacklist.

Xt1524 is the model you want. Some xt1527 can be bootloader unlock(us cellular model) but if you can get your hands on a xt1524 you will be fine

For AT&T usage, if you want an unlockable bootloader, you'll need to get either a Moto-direct XT1527, a Canadian XT1527, or the US Cellular XT1526 (with GSM-enable trick).
Due to the lower price, the AT&T/GoPhone/Cricket XT1527 has flooded the market, so you really have to look hard to find a Moto-direct XT1527 (Canadian ones are relatively easy to identify, just look at the seller's location!).
For the Moto-direct XT1527, the key is to look for a listing that does not say "carrier packaging", and does not say "unlock code" or "unlocking procedure" (the Moto-direct model is SIM unlocked by default). Unfortunately, most of the descriptions on Amazon don't give much detail. You'd probably have better luck on Ebay, since sellers tend to include more details and sometimes photos of the device and boxes. Did a quick look on ebay, and this listing seems to suit your need, but it's pretty expensive: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Motorola-MOTO-E-XT1527-8GB-Black-Unlocked-Smartphone-LTE-/251923588971
Alternatively, the US Cellular XT1526 has all of the AT&T bands, is SIM unlocked, can be bootloader unlocked, and is readily available ($40 new on Amazon). If you want to stick with the stock ROM, you need to perform this trick in order to enable GSM mode: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e-2015/general/help-confirm-5-1-how-to-verizon-moto-e-t3264258 If you want to go custom, you may not need to perform the trick, I'm not sure.

Moto Z Carrier Possibilities?

Hey all,
I noticed that the moto z was a Verizon exclusive unless you bought the gsm unlocked version from Motorola. As for the Verizon version, if it's unlocked but still a Verizon phone would it work with TPO (the people's operator)? I believe TPO is an umbrella of T-Mobile. I read from multiple places that it depends on the phone to see whether or not a Verizon unlocked will work on another carrier. Some eBay listings I've seen have said Verizon models will work with others while others said it wouldn't. I haven't been to find any moto z specific info regarding this on the internet. If someone could give me some insight that would be much appreciated.
Thanks

The problem which you face there is with the LTE bands. Now a days GSM and 3G bands are standard and most phones support all the 3G and 2G bands for universal use. But the same is not the case for LTE bands. The Verizon unit may not have the LTE bands needed for T-Mobile and other US GSM carriers so you will be better off buying the unlocked version.
