RMN3 Pro Kate 8.1.1.0 Battery Drain - Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Questions & Answers

Hey guys,
I bought a Redmi Note 3 Pro 3 (Kate) three weeks ago and was really pleased by the battery life it showed me when I was on 8.0.5.0 (I think).
I usually got 7-10h screen on time on one battery charge lasting me 2-3 days. When I checked the updater app it proposed that there is an update available to 8.1.1.0 and I downloaded and installed it.
Since then my battery life got noticeable shorter and I can only reach 5-7 hours screen on time while the charge only lasts 1-2 days now.
The only apps I've installed are (same as I had on 8.0.5.0):
- Whatsapp
- Zvv timetable
- Google Play music
- Chrome
I already checked permissions, syncing and location stuff and all seems fine (location is off, syncing only chrome history and app data and nothing else).
Anyone has an idea how I can improve the battery life again? Or is it a problem with the 8.1.1.0 version of the global stable rom?
Cheers,

Some people on that version of the ROM may be able to offer advice, but the norm is to monitor what is high in the battery usage percentages.
Could be a lot of reasons but that should show what is the main culprit

It's actually something called "Other" and I have no clue what it refers to:

[Q] How do you boost battery performance?

On my HTC HD2 (O2) phone, my drains battery drains why too faster, i'm running the latest ROM v1.72.206.3 from O2, is there a way of boosting battery performance?
install a new radio rom. Which is best for you is dependant on your area but for me it's 2.12.50.02_2. I also use the energy 6.5.x series roms (not the best on battery but is very easy to use) in conjunction with the radio rom i just mentioned. On light usage my phone will last almost 3 days. With heavy usage (but not playing video) it will last about 2.
Geting rid of the stock software and going custom and newer was probably the best choice i made regarding my phone.
If you want to keep your radio and stock ROM (like me, 1.72 TMob) you can also try and space out the update of weather and email. l have automatic weather updates every 3 hours and emails every hour. You'll be amazed how long the battery lasts. On the other hand, if you are in an area with not very stable reception, your battery will drain quicker because the phone will be working very hard to try and find a stronger signal to keep you connected. So, battery trouble is not just down to stock ROM or even usage. We have a growing number of super-sophisticated smartphones (not just HD2's) using almost Jurassic networks

I use Dutty's latest rom and have to say it is great for battery life! =)
Heres the settings that I use to get 2 - 3 days per charge:
- No email account (I use opera to see my gmail account so I dont need my email updating every few hours draining battery)
- No weather animation (The clouds get annoying for me anyways so I'd rather not have this battery drainer)
- 30% display backlight brightness
- Wifi off
- Bluetooth off
- 2g edge connection on and 3g turned off unless I need to browse the internet
- HTC location services off
- Black background
EDIT: Heres the link to the ROM I am using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=610634
Sooooo, looks like the only way to have good battery life is to switch off all the functionality that makes the HD2 better than a crummy 10yr old Nokia. Is there nothing else? Anyone know of higher capacity battery availability? Mine drains completely between 8am and 6pm with a couple of short calls, couple of minutes on the internet, location on (hourly updates) and push gmail.
Just found this - very helpful people and lots of ideas to sort out battery draining issues:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=718173

Battery life suddenly dropped, only getting an hour of screen-on-time. Suggestions?

I've had my Redmi Note 2 since August or September of last year. When I initially received it through GearBest, battery life was horrendous and the phone was hot all the time. I frantically searched for how to install custom ROMs, and after many hours of hopping around sites, I figured it out and fixed the issue. Battery life was quite good from then on out, and I rarely finished a day with less than 70% battery and an hour or two of SOT. I still got the impression that my battery life wasn't as good as the people who were getting 4+ hours of SOT, but I couldn't really complain since I'm not a super heavy user. Changing from MIUI to AOSP and CM based ROMs didn't seem to have a big impact.
Fast forward to January and I suddenly started ending days with 50% battery with minimal usage while on one of the first CM ROMs made by Bule. It seemed to happen all at once. This was around the same time as I got my Mi Band 1s, but after installing Gsam battery, trying different ROMs, and going a few days without the MiFit app installed, I determined that it wasn't anything related to having the new device connected to the phone. Nothing seemed to suggest that any apps I had installed were sucking more battery than they used to.
Then, about a month ago, my battery life took another dip and I found myself finishing days with 20-40% battery left with only an hour of SOT. I'm often at 60-70% as I leave my university in the early afternoon, and I hardly use my device at all during class.
Currently, I seem to lose about 1% of battery per minute of SOT. Standby isn't too bad, but definitely not as good as it used to be. Having problems across the board suggests to me that my battery may be faulty and dying slowly. I purchased a new battery, but it hasn't arrived yet.
If the new battery is clearly better than the original, then the problem will be solved. But if it seems to be about the same, then it's possible that it isn't the battery's fault after all and I'm doing something stupid to drain my battery. Update: New battery does not seem to be helping.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I've tried to use the Redmi Note Tool app (making sure to use the setting for CM), but I've seen absolutely zero change in battery life. I've changed ROMs at least twice since the problems arose to no avail. WiFi and Bluetooth are on all of the time, but articles I've read seem to suggest that these things are rarely to blame for poor battery life. GPS is used occasionally but isn't on consistently. Screen brightness is set to Auto with the bar below half.
Update: For those who have helped and those who may have similar issues, I believe I've found the solution. After completely re-installing the original China ROM with Fastboot and the MiFlash tool, the issue seems to be solved. I really have no idea what the issue was, but it was clearly something pretty fundamental that wasn't getting reset with TWRP wipes and ROM swaps.
Just in case someone wants it, here are the guides I followed:
ROM: http://en.miui.com/a-234.html
TWRP: https://felixsenada.wordpress.com/2...ng-twrp-recovery-and-root-redmi-note-23prime/
If you have twrp I suggest you to take a backup of the current rom and try messing around.
1. Try 3C Toolbox Pro or any free app tha allows you to change the permissions/freeze etc running apps. Change the apps tha start with the device. Freeze some unnesessary just for the sake of testing.
2. How many apps are you using? Not the ones you have installed and sittings, but actually using everyday. Did you install any in the same period you noticed things go sideways? 1% per minute is not a good sign.
3. Install wakelock detector and monitor what is draining your battery over time.
4. Clear cache/davlik through twrp and wait the phone to recreate the files. Maybe thats just it.

Thank you for your response.
I will look into 1 and 3. As far as apps go, I have a total of 51 apps installed (in the drawer including all the pre-loaded apps), but I only use an absolute maximum of about 12 of them, and on an average day, I only use a handful of those. The only things I can remember installing around the same time I first started having issues were Google Fit and Mi Fit. However, neither showed up in Gsam as suspects, and after changing ROMs on at least one occasion, I didn't reinstall them just to make sure. I still had the same issues with or without them.
4 is something I do regularly whenever I change ROMs, so I don't think that's the solution.
Just to make absolutely sure that I hadn't already overlooked something, this morning I turned off auto brightness and location. It's still too early to tell, but I think turning off auto brightness may have helped.
Nice. Lets see how this goes.
charge at 100 % with screen off flash latest china stable via fastboot(not recovery) use phone for 3 days like this(i now it's a pain but its worth trust me) .
flash twrp via fastboot than flash xiaomi.eu 7.3.2.0 and super su .
4-5 hours SOT assured (assuming your battery doesnt have problems)

Update: I've been traveling for the past two weeks or so, so I haven't been able to respond.
I flashed the latest Xiaomi.eu build before leaving on the trip, but this did not help noticeably, so I can pretty definitively say that it is not an issue with any of the ROMs I've been using. Although it was never really suspected, I suppose this also confirms that it doesn't have to do with my house/work being in a bad spot for cell/WiFi or something odd like that.
Having returned to find my new battery waiting, it seems the battery is not the issue as I have been getting the same behavior today as usual (only a bit over an hour into the day from 100% charge and I'm already below 90% with 8 minutes of SOT).
Unfortunately, I haven't tried any wakelock detectors or other monitors yet since I wouldn't have had time to figure it out while I was away. I can look into this now, but my instinct says that I probably won't find anything that GSam hasn't been reporting anyway.
Finally, I did manage to get 2 hours SOT out of it one day (with lots of GPS usage as well!) and about an hour and a half yesterday, so I know that it isn't incapable of heavier usage; it just seems that it drains more slowly at random on certain days. The only other thing I've noticed is that, when the battery is draining more slowly, the 'Kernel (Android OS)' seen in the GSam screenshot on the original post drops to being about on par with 'Android System'. I don't really know what this would indicate, but maybe someone else could propose an educated theory.

Thanks for the advice, but I have some clarifying questions to make sure I don't do anything stupid that could brick my phone (an excuse to buy a Mi 5 would be great and all, but I really ought to do my best to make this phone work since it can do everything I need just fine).
Can any ROM be flashed via fastboot, or is there a specific one I need to download? I downloaded the china ROM from here: http://en.miui.com/download-274.html#396
Which method of fastboot flashing should I use? When I originally installed TWRP to get the original ROM off of my device, I was confused and bounced around many different sites trying to get ADB and VCOM drivers working, but I see now that there is a simple MiPhone fastboot tool that seems like it would work fine: http://en.miui.com/thread-145555-1-1.html
Do I need to do any wiping first? Normally I wipe via TWRP, but will the fastboot flash automatically get rid of all the data? Will TWRP be wiped as well since you reference re-installing it later?
Thanks for your help!
http://en.miui.com/thread-283080-1-1.html
download fastboot rom here
extract it with 7zip , WinZip,Winrar (your choice)it's an archive basically since you have installed twrp that means fastboot drivers are already installed
now make sure u have twrp 3.0.2 by jemini since it's modded to not let stock rom overwrite twrp
so the recovery.img by jemini place it in images folder that you've extracted replacing stock mi recovery so you hit two birds with one stone .
than click the .bat file flash all
EVERYTHING must be erased EVEN INTERNAL MEMORY

Reproduceable crashes - how to determine root caus (phone or ROM)?

Hi everybody,
since a few weeks I am using RRemix 5.7.4 on my RM Note 2 Prime. I was quite surprised and satisfied regarding the overall performance and battery consumption. Everything went fine.
Before I used MUI Global Stable 9.6.3.0 but battery was drained during less than 1 day. I used 2 batteries - the original from 5-6 years ago and a newer one. Do not know whether both are still fine.
So I baught a new battery for the phone. But since a few days phone behaviour got weird. Battery status was either never loaded up to 100%, or stayed at 1% for more than half a day with normal usage (messangers, calls, some apps) etc. etc. ... This happened with one of the older batteries and RRemix 5.7.4. So I installed the freshly bought battery. But latest after then (maybe even shortly before) the phone quite reliably crashes when a set up a call and connection is established. Furthermore battery status was shown as >40% but I could not restart the phone until I plugged it into charging cable. This I could reproduce repeatedly! Now I am really confused not knowing whether the phone itself might have problems (charging/battery watch electronic) or the ROM.
How can I determine which one is not working?
Many thanks in advance for your help!
Bye

Android 10 battery drain OTA Update and HARD RESET

Hi everyone!
A couple of weeks ago I received the security patch and Android 10 for my POCO. It is not yet rooted and running the stock MIUI.
After the update however, the battery life degraded nearly 50% from 5-6 hours of SOT now i have at most 3 to 4.
The Standby battery drain is worse though! Before i charged my phone once in two days (I am not a power user) now i need to charge it everyday! I have more than 20% battery drain at night alone!
The first thing I did after I got that problem was to check if all the apps are restricted, if the GPS is off and so on. I Downloaded the Greenify app just in case but nothing helped!
After that i did a full HARD RESET. After it the Situation got a bit better but still I have no more than 4 hours of SOT and still lose more than 15% at night. All the apps got restricted use and GPS is turned off! The only battery drain function I have active is the WiFi but I got it always on before too!
I couldn't find any solution that would work for me. I was so Inlove with my Poco F1 before and now after the Android 10 update i am starting to feel i need to go on...
Please if you have any suggestions let me know! Thank you a lot!

Must Read: A Short Poco F1 Battery Drain Story

I had this device since 2018 Nov. Everything worked perfect. No problems at all. Then comes the great covid and phone starts acting wierd. (remember I always had bitdefender total security of the device). First the touch started acting up (random clicks here and there) then this year the battery got swollen. So I got an old s5 working and put my sim into it. In the meantime downloaded MIUI 12 from their official site and installed and alongside I changed poco f1's battery but sadly it got pregnant too. Now Im on third battery on this poco F1 and seems like drain wont stop.
So I kept a watch. Its like 2 days of my new battery and during the night (50%+ battery) 1 AM - 9 AM (7% Battery). The massive is drain has not apps listing their names on drain but "Other Apps" draining 62.5% (of the 50% battery left) which is massive and has no reason to drain as the device was idle (I was fast asleep).
I came to conculsion -
1. The MIUI or one of their staff is doing it on purpose or mass running some miner or something on the old devices.
2. Or MIUI official site is hacked and someone is doing the above.
There is no other logical explanation.
Now the Question - Is there any way I can track what in "Other Apps" is draining so much battery?
Get BBS (better battery stats, there's a xda edition for free) and check what's draining your battery. Also you could always use a custom rom. You could also block internet access for everything you're not using with apps like Blokada or Adguard.
