Not really, if he just wanted to wake the screen.
Every phone must have DT2W. I came from Windows Phone and Nokia spoiled me.
Android sucks badly in three departments DT2W, Glance and screen light up on notifications.
Only high end Samsung has these features.

I'd suggest to use the proximity sensor to wake your device if you don't want to use the fp. It's called ScreenWakeUp from Play Store. It works quite well with stock 21s.
Also missing this feature from a CM based rom on my old handset.

is it battery friendly ?
I didn't notice any battery issues with it. I have consumption by the app 2% which I can neglect. It's convenient as well.
If you're on Cm13 why don't you use ambient display? I know it's just showing the notifications, but you can wake it by power button if you notice any notifications. I do miss the ambient display from CM13 as now I'm now on stock. This is mainly the reason I installed ScreenWakeUp, it's not like ambient display, but at least is working in the same way by proximity sensor.

The flagship LG devices for the past 2-3 years have dt2w/knock features as well. G-Pad (7 and 8) and G series phones (G2, G3, G4, G5). LG has spoiled me too, now when I pick up a device without dt2w it feels like it is lacking an important feature.
Does anyone know if LG has a dedicated sensor for this, or uses the built in accelerometer?

Bump this old thread. Looking for a working apps. Have tried 20+ of all the LED/torch in PlayStore with no luck.
Last hope (that will be unlikely) is to hope Samsung update the firmware to Lollipop, since it will have dedicated Torch button in quick settings.

Another huge fail for Samsung. No wonder this phone is so cheap on eBay. If they arn't careful, they'll go the way of HTC.
a xenon flash isn't a led. turn it on for more than a minute and it'll burn your battery!
it isn't a standar light, that's why it doesn't work as such for flashlight apps

If you display turns off when coming close to the sensor with your hand during a call, the sensor is active, you just can't see.

On Huawei's other phones with fingerprint scanners they feature gestures on the scanner, a lot like a touchpad on a laptop. You can swipe down for the notification tray and swipe it up, double tap to clear the tray, swipe up for the recent apps, and long press to go to the home screen.
Since none of this was mentioned to be included in M and I know that's custom Huawei software. I was still wondering if any devs out there might be wanting to work on an app to add these functions, or if something similar already exists. This really makes the scanner a lot more functional.
They also have a safe and app lock in their software 2 other great additions. I know I've seen an app lock for the Samsung phones, and not sure if it'll work on just any phone with a scanner. While these are great additions on the Huawei phones, their skin is not. I'd love to see stuff like this incorporated on stock version of Android. I know nothing about programming, but just hope some eager devs are out there and looking to enhance what the scanner can do and take better advantage of it.
I hope it does have this feature but I haven't heard anything about it either...
No, it doesn't have it.

Unlike the Xperia Z5, and Samsung phones (not 100% about Samsung phones), you do NOT need to turn on the device first. Simply putting your finger on the scanner is enough to wake it up and unlock it. The Huawei Ascend Mate 7 does that very well and is very accurate. This bodes well for the 6P for obvious reasons.
Yep. On Huawei Mate S, we can slide down on the scanner and it brings down the notifications list. I would really love to have that kind of gestures implemented so hopefully some devs would implement it on roms. *fingerscrossed*

Samsung requires you to wake the device first. Basically you have to tap the home or power button then let it read your fingerprint. Kinda lame. I wish it were like the new nexi
Xposed will add this if someone makes it. I use gesture control but using the finger print scanner would be so much better

I've seen no mention of that being built into M, but on Huawei phones with their EMUI skin they have an app locker which does this. It's a really great feature for a phone with a scanner. It's great to lock down banking apps or whatever else you want to keep people out of.
I know someone has created an app like this for Samsung phones, however I'm not sure if it'll work with other phones using a scanner. Hopefully someone creates something like this soon if it doesn't.

I have the note 5 as well, on it right now. Like you said, you have to physically press the button before it will read the fingerprint. The point was that with the new nexi, you only need to place your fingerprint on the reader for it to simultaneously wake up and unlock the screen. Not something the note 5 does

Marshmallow has API's for app developers to implement this. I ordered this phone because I want to incorporate it with an app idea I have. I'm not sure if Marshmallow has this built in where you can limit access... I guess you could set up different accounts on the device which would limit access to the device based on fingerprint.

If you tap the screen anywhere a purple fingerprint will illuminate on the screen, but the first tap is not necessary if you're already used to where you should put the finger, you can just put the finger even though it is not displaying the purple icon and it will unlock. The optical fingerprint sensor is not great though, was hit or miss for me.
It'd be handy for the screen to turn on though. Are there any good apps that accomplish this? Obviously the screen is already always expecting input so this wouldn't be that much to add, I think.

Yes buy I use fave unloc so no problem then ?
First of all this is not my app just sharing all credits goes to @vishal_android freak.
This is true notification led replacement specifically designed for one plus 6T but working perfectly on one plus 6 too and should work on any android devices having ambient display and having amoled display (for batyery saving)
As we all knows notification led is battery consuming and still we cant understand which notification we are receiving as we cants remember notification colours for all apps(though OOS has some color customization) ???.
So this app is simple just using ambient display to shown Notification icons of received notification ( without consuming battery as specific part of display is used)
Here is review and app settings
https://youtu.be/sMUMsd6uy80
Just download app install
Open it give notification access
Then disable battery optimization for this app under battery (don't worry it will not consume battery too much)
Now enable wake up for new notifications under ambient display.
Now disable notifications led blinking under settings
Thats it u can tweak more in app settings
Download app:
