Ok, Those having the battery drain issue.
1. You have tmobile's Samsung Galaxy 5.
2. You notice a battery drain while the phone is not in use.
3. You may have installed wake lock apps, etc, and noticed the drain was caused by "Android System"
1. To apply Fix: You must have root, and Odin.
2. Flash the rom listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2720382&page=3
And uninstall Google+ with root uninstaller from system after. Be sure to download ad-away using F-Droid to block ads again.
3. After finishing, be sure to visit wifi > advanced settings >and untick the optionkeep wi-fi on during sleep to Never. or (while charging).
4. You may optionally turn of motion sensors, smart stay etc.. but this isn't required.
The culprit is Carrier IQ, Knox AND Google+. On stock rom, it allowed me to uninstall SOME components of the blasted spywares, but not all, even with root uninstallers. Luckilly the flashed ROM took them off completely. You must rid of ALL 3 of these irritants to fix the problem. Apparently there have been multiple threads here of frustrated users. I am going to contact tmobile at some point, and outline the issue. I find it REALLY odd that there is spyware on the phones in the USA.
Since then, MY GOD my battery lasts, and the phone doesn't get wake locked.
After 1 hour of testing, already seeing a noticeable difference. Please try this and confirm the same so we can get this bloody aggravating battery issue solved.

Lol right.. Now that makes me wonder about carrier iq does.
Thank you, just finished following all these steps now! Just so I'm clear, if you install the custom rom, you don't need to disable all the things listed in the last paragraph, right?
So I don't have this device yet, but from the sounds of it, it looks like a real serious issue that can potentially drive novice users away and give S5 bad rep. It still baffles me that Samsung (or the carrier) can compromise the device to such extent that its barely usable.

From what I can understand, the custom ROM removes Knox and Carrier IQ, but you still have to remove Google+, and install adaway.
But my question, can't I just use titanium with root and remove those three apps without flashing a custom ROM?

Well I tried that but Knox and carrier iq can't be removed even with root and battery issues persisted. As the question involving removing Google plus yes that's required too. You have to flash then remove Google plus. After that the rest is optional.
Ok help!! I finally broke down and bought an unlocked zoom on the net. It is a great phone, we love it. I use ultrame for a carrier, now it comes down to this> The phone originally is ATT, I read all over here and am confused, if I root it is there a way to remove the ATT software?? will it really mess with the GPS?? will I loose other functions on the phone??? I am confused and yes I talk to myself at times. But I am getting fifty responses all different as to what to do, or just leave the phone alone? It works great, camera is beyond belief. any opinions?????????thanks red423

If you root with kingoroot nothing will happen to your gps.. Mine works just fine. After root, use titanium backup to delete the att bloat and you will have no worries.

I understand your worries but as the above member said, you have nothing to worry about. I have the International unlocked version (Not AT&T's) and I rooted it with 'Kingo Root' 2 weeks ago and everything is fine.
So, by acquiring root, you can use Titanium Backup to disable/freeze or delete AT&T apks. Now I suggest you only freeze them first, reboot your phone, use it a bit, make sure there are no errors happening since some APKs are needed by the system for your phone to function or else it will crash and not boot-up properly. So freeze first, test your phone, if all is good, delete them. I personally only delete apks that I am sure I don't need or those that I can re-download from the Play Store if need be. The rest, I just freeze them and forget about them. They can't act on their own if they're frozen =).
Btw, you can still disable/freeze apps without root by going to System settings - More - Application manager, and swipe to "All" category, and find the ones you don't want, click on them, and then click on "Turn Off". (I still prefer Titanium Backup since it shows me all apks and freezes all of them)
got the root
Ok I got the root, so the titanium says no freeze without donating, there are a few ATT apps that show up, on the zoom which ones have you guys just removed forever???? or is there another program like titanium to remove att bloat ware???? AND A BIG THANK YOU FOR REPLYING!!!!!!!!! I am all rooted now and want to make sure if i erase apk's they are the correct ones I cant freeze. red423

Great! glad it worked out. I had an S4 prior to this and this Zoom is quicker and smoother I just miss the bigger screen + resolution and thinner body.
There's no kitkat update yet but apparently they announced it and should be out in the coming months hopefully!
Hello ladies and gentlemen of this forum. Firstly I'd like to say the availability of substratum has made this less painful I do not like being unrooted and locked out if my bootloader. I desperately Miss my V4A ARISE SOUND. After leading Verizon and going to Sprint because I can get four unlimited phones for the cost one or two at VZW. I had a Motorola Z2 and it was bootloader unlocked and I had Viper audio And root but I turned it into a paper weigh when trying to take oreo update. The whole A/B partition was very new to me so now I have this V30 plus.
Has anybody discovered a great sound mod or work around that is compatible with YouTube and Google play music?
I got an app called power amp and it works great for anything in my library it sounds amazing Poweramp is a great app with many features and great sound adjustment.
I'm looking for any kind of hack or non root modification or application that will allow me to have great sound quality all through the device.
Thank you for your help and support LG is new to me I was very big on the Nexus 6 and Nexus 6p forums. I feel a little handcuffed now.
Thank you for any direction or idea!!!
I know right, and it would be awesome if we could use convolvers (.irs profiles) outside of viper4android.
Yeah no kidding, I actually unzipped an ARISE FILE AND INSTALLED arkamys but I cannot tell if it makes too much of a difference the file below Works only for Google Play music but it's pretty awesome Dolby Digital I cleared my data for Google Play Music then installed this file then you reboot don't open the file whatever you do. After the reboot go into the menu of Google Play Music tap on equalizer and Dolby will pop up and it sounds really really good... MAKE SURE ALL FACTORY SOUND MODS ARE DISABLED.
If you like Google play music this works great man

I've tried it, and I have to say I feel like it's nothing special. I find the poweramp's 10 step equalizer much more useful and powerful. If it worked system wide it would be cool, but I'm not impressed right now.
Yeah Poweramp is a lot cooler I just thought I'd post anyhow. There's a lot of settings in Poweramp I found some that control gain and if you mess with it a bit and then close the app then open YouTube I was able to get it to control you tube... It's pretty sweet they give you a trial offer that long I'll end up buying it
Day 1 with this phone and no root. Ahhhhhhhh. Withdrawl. I removed the bloatware and got substratum working but I'm missing my magisk and viper4android bad. Not sure I can handle this. Well, it's not that people WANT the Sprint version. Any version except T-mobile will do for this exploit. It's better if you already have a US998 or H930. It's just the Sprint version is dirt cheap on used market because no one else wants locked down Sprint phones. This method not only carrier unlocks the phone but also bootloader unlocks and roots them. If you absolutely need Sprint, then you can flash Sprint modems and firmware back if wish.
I picked up two mint V30+ for $325 and $350, and I already own an open market US998 V30+, but the price is too good and I will keep them as converted US998.
US998 firmware works fine on Sprint. Just need to flash modem from recovery using adb. You need to add the apns but that's about it. I did edit the build.prop because the notification drop-down was showing roaming indicator off. I changed ro.build.target_operator=NAO to ro.build.target_operator=USC so drop-down will show sprint. You CAN change to ro.build.target_operator=SPR (but it will lock your apns so edit what you need before changing to this) all is well even have the Sprint lte bands
I was using the Sprint stock rom but switched to US998 rom as there is no carrier bloat. They seem very similar anyways
Here is the proper apns for Sprint. The previous post forgot to include mms.
how were you able to input dun,

If you are on an aosp based rom it's not needed. I had no issues adding it to us998 firmware and ls998 firmware.

Hey guys,
I recently purchased a Galaxy S9+ SM-G965U1 From Ebay not realizing it couldn't be rooted. Rooting is probably the most important factor to me on a phone.
I noticed that there is no way to do it or unlock the bootloader.
Is anyone working on this for us? Or am I screwed? I'd rather not send back the phone as I already put Dome Glass on it, and got it activated with Metro.
Give it to me straight, will I ever see Root on this device?
I think not,If The Device you have is snapdragon variant
No hope on root, if it is snapdragon. But if it is exynos, then u can root.
No root needed. Enjoy your phone as is.

Root is definitely getting overrated. I'm doing everything I've done on root without.
Substratum is the best thing to happen to Android, and specifically to Samsung.

I agree with you root really is overrated nowadays, except for one thing...
Making nandroid backups or similar is definitely one of the biggest advantages to having root.
Cloud based backups don't retain any of your apps data and if that particular app doesn't backup your account then you're screwed starting over from scratch.
I sure do miss making titanium backups...
To the OP... No root for SM-G965U or SM-G965U1 variants, and I wouldn't hold my breath on it being rooted either.

What I really want is an Ad free experience, I'm coming from a Moto X Pure and had that baby running pretty silky.
I'd also like to be able to use custom roms.
Do you know if there is a way to get rid of Bixby? Or other system apps besides disabling them?
And what is Substratum? Excuse my noobiness.

With the galaxy S9+ and knox you can use apps like adhell3 to achieve an adfree experience. Other apps exist as well that create fake/internal VPN connections to block advertisements... Adguard is one that works pretty good too.

I enjoy the ability to tweak the performance and experience on my phone as well (not to mention the nandroid backups), but regrettably if and when it may come for get this phone is unknown. Samsung built this phone with security in mind so we may be in for a long wait for any root method (if one ever eventually materializes).

If you can not uninstall the app then maybe an ADB method exists. To be honest with system apps I would suggest you just disable them instead of removing them. Adhell3 allows for disabling of apps, and I have used it to disable several system apps. There is ample enough space on the phone (and with the use of external storage) that I personally have no cause for removing them at all. Besides the chance exists you might break something if you inadvertently remove the wrong system app.

Tasker beta also has the ability to do this. Currently using Google Assistant as the single press, but if I need to use bixby I just hold the button in.
Later Samsung bixby updates also allow changes to the button, but the only caveat with this is you can't set it to competing voice assistants.
As others said unfortunately no root, but also as others said root is now overrated.
The only 2 things i can't do is custom ROM and nandroid backup. I getting away from google so i use different apps and email etc.
But since no root
I use Brave browser it has built in ad blocking, blokada a vpn ad blocker, package disabler pro to disable bixby, facebook and the update services, and bXAction to remap the bixby button.
Good luck

If it downloads the update clearing the system cache should purge I've been told but not tested it!
More than one way to skin a kat.
If you're rooted use one of the rooted apk blockers; I have very little knowledge in that area.
You can block the update app with ADB if you want.
Karma Firewall can be use to block the app itself from internet access, Karma uses almost no battery, freeware, an excellent apk. Can be set to run at bootKate.
Your carrier can also disable them on their end if it's a carrier phone.
I use Package Disabler on my 10+ to block the garbage. Use the none Samsung phone version.
Home - Package Disabler
The only NON-root solution that let’s you disable any unwanted packages that come pre-installed / installed with your phone / tablet.
www.packagedisabler.com
Updates break phones.
Rule #1 if your device is running fast, stable and fulfilling its mission... let it be!
I'm still running on Pie. My current OS load is over a year old, still fast and stable in spite of heavy usage. Very low maintenance.
Security is generally just not an issue unless you do something stupid with Pie and above.
As course there is no saving dumb bunnies... even with the latest updates

I don't use it. There are tutorials here though.
There are a bunch of system managers for rooted phones that should lock it down.
This one does I think:
Autostarts - Apps on Google Play
Keep control over your phone: See what applications do behind your back.

In developer options is a toggle for automatic updates. Turn it off.
With that deactivated, it'll give you a notification prompt about new updates, but won't force the update like it usually does when you reboot your phone.

Yeah if you can flip it off in Developer options that is sweet.
Google Services also pushes updates, and last night it managed to get through - usually it whines there is an update, and even if I let it, it crashes... figured no worries then. Well... it (or something, every other OTA service and option is off that I found) made it through and unrooted me last night.
See https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...can-meet-up-with-a-terrible-accident.4281293/ for OP
Luckily, bootloader still unlocked, updated to latest TWRP and reflashed Magisk and all seems to be OK.
Reflashing stock 14.0.11 gives a bunch of loop errors, working on that.
Anyway methinx time to get rid of G/S and replace with the Gapps version....
