First, I'm not a developer (any more), just a novice user of a Nexus 10.
I've been playing with various widgets, putting them on the home screen & building groups of apps to keep the screen simple,
so I can actually see my wallpaper. (Nothing special, just pics I like.)
Problem is that huge Google bar at the top. Is there an simple way to get rid of it, like the select-drag-drop for other home screen stuff.?
Also, there seems to be some limits on where I can actually put apps or widgets. Is there a way to adjust this too?
I'd really like to put a dashboard widget in place of that Google bar.
Finally, is there a way to disable Google when I select or swipe nearby the bottom of the screen?
This is a real pain-in-the-patootie when playing solitaire & the cards get near the bottom of the screen.
Thanks in advance. I could not find this anywhere in the Q&A forum for Android.
Try a different launcher, like nova, which will allow you to disable the persistent search bar.
Ok, what' a "launcher"?

Sounds helpful, if I knew what a launcher is.
I am soooooo out of date re: computers of any kind anymore...
Just go on google play and search "launcher"! It is the app which launches other apps, provides the app drawer, and many other setting options, like how pages scroll, etc.
Thanks!
Thanks for the info. I'll go see whats I can find, & come back here to make sure its a good one.
Root file manager under system then apps. Look for Google search bar and add .back at end then restart phone

Sounds good, a real engineering solution instead of a workaround (not that there is anything wrong with a workaround).
How to I get to the root file system to modify filenames?
I'm on a Nexus 10. Any idea what app/widget/setting function to use?
I've got "androzip" which let's me see the file system down to a certain point ( /.) & shows a bunch of folders,
but crashes when I try to see what's in the folder named "root"
Suggested launcher?

Which one is best/most reliable/free-or-cheap?
If I muck this thing up, Duh Hubby will get really upset!
I know there is/was a list of recommended apps & widgets, but can't find the thread now. Don't know if it mentioned a launcher anyway.
Thanks again!

I just now realized that you suggest a launcher here... Doh!
The other suggestion about changing s filename may be good too. I suspect a launcher will be safer for me.
Yes, using a launcher is better. Otherwise you'd have to unlock the bootloader of Nexus 10, which will wipe all your data, then set it up all over again and restore backed up data, then get into the root filesystem and modify the file name of the app file, which can be too much since you say you're not experienced (unless you're interested in learning to do all that) The app is called QuickSearchBox.apk btw not GoogleSearchBox.apk.
Also, custom launchers like Nova and Apex launcher look exactly the same as the default launcher you're using right now, but have a boatload of additional features a lot of which you may find interesting and useful. The default (stock) launcher is very basic in functionality.

Much nicer than Android basic, more "toys" to play with & no Google bar at the top!
I even learned what a home screen actually is & have set up several for different uses.
Another fun time waster to play with beyond just games... would be nice to set
different wallpaper for each screen, but being able to actually see the whole
image is really nice.
I think I'll get the Pro version to get rid of other Google launch with the sweep/touch near
the bottom of screen- the answer to the second part of my original question.
Thanks to all who replied... I feel like such a noon at this point. These forums are truly the best place
to find/get answers to basics questions. The Help provided by Google is distinctly lacking in detail.
Now to search for answers to more questions....
damn. the stock launcher is actually pretty nice on the hydro edge at least for my pop but I want that damned google bar gone (BUT WANT google search and google now) I just want the stupid useless homescreen bar gone (its too small for him to use he can't hit the mic icon reliably) so I just put a regular voice search icon on the screen for him.
Grrr I hate when they "shove" things down your throat like that.

Agree with you
Is there any way to go into system and delete it all together?
You can't delete system apps unless you are rooted, which if you have a nexus device than this is super easy
Yes as mentioned before the simple fix is just use another launcher, there are many amazing ones to pick from often with a free version that works great
As for removing the bar from the stock launcher the easiest way would be to decompile the .apk and find the xml file for it and chances are change a simple bit of code from true to false but without ever decompiling this myself can't say how its set up. But in truth this may be more work than it is worth

I was accessing Google Play Store and an update was needed. It waited all night and it was still waiting. Trying to "fix" things, I accidently deleted the Google Play Store icon. I can go to Setting>Applications Manager and the app is still running, but I can't get the icon back on my Nova home screen. I am using Nova Launcher if that makes a difference on my s4. When I return to the Touchwiz home page, the the Google Play Store icon is there. I just can't move it over to the Nova Launcher home page.
Can someone please help this Android idiot?
Thanks in advance.

I've been trying out every launcher under the sun and decided to settle on the Google Now launcher, which is totally sweet as you can just say Ok Google soon as you unlock your watch which is very cool.... However, how on earth do you get to see the notification bar??? Every launcher except stock and OUI2 hide it for some reason... anyone have any ideas??
I use both the Google Now launcher and stock (I don't like OUI at all). I switch between OK Google and stock for the notification bar. Some use an app to display notifications, but there are reportedly issues with swiping down with it installed, etc. SwipeStatusBar or something like that.

I find there are some issues with the Now Launcher and compared it with Nova Prime...
Now Launcher
Pros:
OK Google hot word works soon as you unlock your phone (Best feature ever!)
Now Cards when you swipe left....
Cons:
Can't seem to easily add another page
Scrolling is a bit laggy and not quite as sensitive, seems to try and open an app quite a bit, you have to be quite deliberate with your page scrolls.
Nova Launcher Prime:
Pros:
You can resize icons & remove app names to save space.
Very fast page scrolling
Seems to be easier to add widgets I like "One More Clock" widget...
Cons:
Can't say "OK Google, order me pizza!" ;(
Is there a Google Now widget or something???

you can set nova with ok google commands or in that case whatever you want to say like "ok phone listen to me..." by using an app called tasker and an app called autovoice. Look on youtube and you can find some great tutorials.
I did a bit of digging around and found SwipeStatusBar to be a good app for Apex - I made the adjustment so it fits on the top right of my screen.
I got the name from someone on here, but I've forgotten who - sorry!
I wanted to install and use the Google Now Launcher in my Moto E... But the fact is, After I set it all up, I have noticed 2 things:
a) It takes up a huge amount of RAM
b) The transition from the app drawer to the Home Screen is really, really choppy (laggy)
My question is : Is this a problem with my device or some problem related to the launcher itself?
(I have also used the Nova, Aviate and Apex Launchers before... But they have all been smooth like the stock Launcher)

Install Link2SD app and move some apps to the SDCARD to free up space, then install the google launcher now, I did it and ran well, to make this you need rooted.
Google Search version 4.0 doesn't have this issue, as the transition from home screen to app drawer and vice versa is smooth. But the only catch is that, as Google Search version 4.0 is only released with Lollipop, installing it in 4.4 unrooted ROMs would make your OK Google search hotword not working anymore. So have to disable OK Google hotword or it keeps crashing. If you don't mind that, then its a prefect launcher.
More info: http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/1...p-developer-preview-apk-downloadinstructions/
ya those transitions are really laggy..but those will be fixed in lollipop.!
BUT WHERE IS THAT UPDATE MANNN..!!AM FRUSTRATED NOW
I am downloading Google Search v4... along with the L Launcher...
But the catch is, my phone is not rooted...
So I'll try and disable "Ok Google" and find out.
Thanks everyone
I am using google now launcher w/o OK google and average 450 mb free ram.No lags.
Hi
What feature will I lose if I install an Action Launcher or Nova Launcher on my Home, instead of the default Huawei Launcher? In that case, how will I access Google Home.
When you also install Fluid N.G. app from Play store together with Nova Lancher for example you can setup your Home Button the way you want. I have it set to swipe up for Google Home .
Nova launcher together with nova companion. Then you do have all google functionalities.
Was this the answer you needed?
Weather widget is not available on the Nova Launcher.

How about the gesture navigation, knuckle screenshot, split screen etc
They work without any problem on Nova
How do you access Google Assistant with Nova
I have found nova to be the only launcher so far. Pixel launcher, lawn hair and other seem to just crash and smart recovery comes up recommending you uninstall

Try Fluid N.G from the app store, gestures worked well with Nova when I experienced the same issue so this should help.

Sorry, yes you are right. I did the gesture wrongly. It works!

Action Launcher also works very well
Stock widget doesn't work on any 3rd party launchers....
Recent Apps doesn't work right with nova launcher.
If you want to open the last app and just click the last App on the left(don't swipe), you will land on the Homescreen.
Also sometimes there is a light blue Background in the recent apps view, like if you select something.
Ich wish in the near future there will be an option to use navigation like in Stock Android. I've tried it out and it makes Multitasking really comfortable.
