Sudden trouble with USB port and fast-charging - T-Mobile LG V10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All of a sudden the USB port on my one year old V10 is having issues:
Won't "fast-charge" when plugged in to LG fast-charger. But does do and show that it is "regular" slow charging.
When unplugged, status bar battery icon still showing charging animation.
Does not switch (or give option to switch) to data when USB is plugged into computer nor does it appear as device on computer as it did before.
Battery is draining very fast, probably 2-3 times as fast as it should.
Also doing the following, don't know if related to USB issue:
When I power off completely, before, I had to press and hold down power button to power back on, and would also get a quick vibrate.
Now when phone is off, just quickly tapping power button for split second powers on phone and get no vibrate. Also when phone is off, plugging in charging cable powers on phone.
These issues just appeared out of the blue yesterday. Nothing has happened to phone - not dropped, exposed to moisture, didn't install any new apps, flash a rom, nothing new done to phone. It just started happening. :crying:

I would say that this is being caused by one of 2 things:
1. Bad charging adapter and/or cable. Either use another charger/cable, or buy an original LG fast charger replacement from somewhere like Amazon. 3rd-party stuff may or may not work out well, I would stick with LG if you want to play it safe.
2. The actual charging port on the phone is bad. In this case, no charger/cable will fix it. This will probably mean buying a new phone, unless you have warranty/insurance, the cost of getting it repaired won't be justifiable.
So far one of my 2 LG cables have gone bad, developed a split in the wire, now it charges my phone sometimes, but sometimes not. And it rarely works for copying files to/from PC. My other cable works fine for the most part.

I have 2 OEM LG Fast Charge 2.0 cable and brick sets, the one it originally came with plus another one I bought. I also have a second OEM battery and LG battery cradle. I've tried all these plus others I have and all get the same result.
I mostly use the cradle to keep the second battery charged and swap them out as needed each day, so I don't actually do much charging on the phone. I also use SambaDroid to move files to a PC, so the only real problem this is causing is rapid battery drain. I'm no expert but I'm guessing there's a pin in the USB port that is shorting somehow and that it's causing the battery to drain. Any hardware experts out there? I need this phone to last another year so am willing to try minor surgery if it would help and if I can find a good guide to follow.
Edit: SambaDroid not working in Marshmallow. I also sometimes just take out the SD card and pop it in a card reader.

[Q] USB Connected - Screen Accuracy Drops to Zero?

Hey guys.
Any time I connect the phone to my computer via USB, the phone's touchscreen goes bonkers. It wont register my touch in the correct location, it jumps around and registers button-presses that I never pressed, or won't register a firm screen-press at all!
If the USB is unplugged, everything zips along accurately.
Any idea what might be causing this, and how I might fix it?
Just a quick background:
I rooted and installed the lag-fix. I encountered a problem with the lag-fix, restored factory settings, and root/lag-fixed again. The problem cropped up after the factory restore.

That's wacky. Since you've already done it once, I'd just restore again and see if that fixes it.
Also... not sure if this is a side-effect of the factory restore, but guess what suddenly appeared in my Widgets list??

Using LauncherPro by any chance? It's been showing up with LP since Day 1.. If not, that's pretty darn cool then.

Oops... launcherPro.
I've since reset the factory settings again; no luck. Still all wonky when USB is plugged in.
I'm considering taking it back to best buy and simply exchanging it for a different one, since I've only had it for a day. I would think that resetting everything to factory defaults would have fixed any software problem. Maybe this is a hardware problem that I just now noticed.
I have heard roomer, that if your usb is to low or to high of a voltage it will bork up the touch screen while plugged in.
it seems a common occurrence on many Android phones that use our style of USB port that if you use a 3rd party usb cable (i.e. one other than what shipped with the phone) as well as many 3rd party usb wall chargers that the touchscreen will either go bonkers or freeze up alltogether.
I've seen the exact same thing happen with my friends HTC MT3G and Motorola CliqXT using certain cables and chargers. Any cables/chargers that do this to my Vibrant do it to their phones too.
Interesting. I'm glad I read all this before I decided to take it back;
the laptop I had it plugged into is so fubar'd, that it would not surprise me to find that it has incorrect voltage...
This happens all the time on my Droid 2, Nexus and Fascinate. I just swipe very quickly and press lightly. However, no matter how many "tricks" I try it's still hard to flip through screens or open the correct app. Hardest task would be to navigate a website. Considering it happens on multiple Android devices and computers I never really put too much thought into it. Just figured it to be a Android bug.
Wow, never seen this. Now I do use the cable that came with my fascinate to plug into my computer, however car charger, wall chargers, and a USB charger (in my truck), I just use the cables from my Droid1. All my chargers are generics... Hmmm..
my htc touch pro 2 did the same thing when i used a gps car charger... screen went crazy

Ok. So for anyone wanting to know what's going on in the background to cause problems with your phone with crappy chargers....
I first discovered this with another touch screen player *cough*ipodTouch*cough*cough when I was trying to make a universal 4-port USB charging bay that would work with my sansa and my ...other player.
The specification that most device-manufacturing companies use nowadays for charging states that for a device to recognize a charger (and to start accepting a charge from the charger), the data pins must be shorted (connected together). This is what Sandisk, Apple, and several others are using. That is how I built my 4 port USB charger and it works flawlessly (with my sansa, ipod, galaxy, and Cowon S9).
NOW, somewhere floating around on the net are specs that state that some data must be sent/received through the USB's data cable (i believe it claims to need any 2.5V) which basically puts some resistors in to make a voltage divider.with the power and ground and data pins. THESE ARE BAD SPECS. They might have been legit in the past for some other device, but they are NOT what our phones need.
So some of the cheap, off-brand chargers are actually sending random messages to our Phones through the data pins (non-sense 2.5 volts). I haven't heard any reports of this damaging the phone or mp3 players yet, but whenever I plug mine into a charger and I lose the ability to control the screen, I get nervous b/c I know there is voltage on the data pins, and I don't know if it's the correct amount. So I get nervous
...does that make sense?
I had the Droid and the first time I saw that, it freaked me out. It seems to be an issue with touch screen android phones when they don't receive the correct voltage, whether because of a 3rd party cable, or a different computer voltage or something. I was using my blackberry mini usb charger and it would act like it had rabies. Nothing is wrong with your phone.
The charger included is plugged in next to my bed, and I'm using my Droid's USB cable in the computer without issues. That's very strange. I've never heard of this problem.

Sorry dude. It's not just android handsets, and it doesn't (seem) to have anything to do with the proper voltage. I've taken multimeters to the chargers. They are providing the proper ~4.5-5V range. It has to be the data pins.
Although, that's just the chargers I've had. Take a voltmeter to your usb chargers (don't touch the casing at the same time!) and see what their voltage is. But a low voltage just wouldn't charge your phone, and a high voltage would damage it.

[Q] My S3 is not charging

Like a week ago my S3 9300 was taking longer and longer to charge now it won't charge at all, now is always stuck at 0% if i turn it off it will charge but very very slowly, i don't know if it's the phone or the battery maybe someone here had the same problem and could help me out a little, btw i have it with CM 10.1 thank you
Alejo
Had the same exact problem with my i9300, got it out of warranty repairs yesterday. Was using a custom rom, but the same thing happened when I finally managed to flash it back to stock (had to manually press the microusb-cable as hard as I could into the phone all the time in order to get the phone recognized while Odin was working, was the longest flash ever lol..).
Remember reading about cold solder joints etc before sending it off, so if your phone is out of warranty for some reason you could replace the charging port yourself. Replacement part costs ~5$ (eBay) and if you got the skills it shouldn't be too hard to replace.
EDIT: Actually mine didn't even charge when power off, so I was pretty certain it was a bad solder joint or some other physical problem.. Have you tried cleaning the usb port with pressured air or just blowing into the port? Could be some pins of the usb port blocked with debris. Also check your usb cables, there are those with 5 pins and those with only 4. Saw the difference in charging speed while the thing was still working.

Well actually when i plug the phone into the PC it will recognize it and i can access the files in the SD card and Internal Memory and everything at the moment it's turned off and it's charging.
I have the problem that the phone only want to charge with soms chargers.
I can connect the phone to the original charger or to a pc or any device without problems, the phone will charge.
Even with an old blackberry charger (only 2 wires, no data) and car charger can i charge without any problem!
But when i connect the phone to the htc charger of my old phone, or to an iphone charger i see the phone is connected but it won't charge.
When i open batterymonitor i see that the charger is connected, but the phone still use his battery.
I tried this with all kinds of charders and all kinds of micro usb cables. Then i thaught there was maybe a resistor or chip or something build in some chargers, because i couls only charge with chargers with 2 wire cables.
Then i took a usb extension cable and i disconnected the two data wires so only the + and - 5V cables were left,
but still no success. If anybody knows where the problem is, please let my know
with kind regards! Martijn

Galaxy S4 won't charge.

Help! My Samsung Galaxy S4 won't charge or connect to a computer. I've tried different chargers, cables, plug in locations, car, 110, computer. There is no dirt. Connection is clean. I have a spare battery and both of them will charge on the battery charger. I have tried backed up roms. I have done a factory reset.
All of this and nothing helped. Am willing to try anything. Verizon is going to send me a refurb.
Help please.

Is there any indication of a connection being made? If not, you should just wait for the refurb. If you have rooted, I really doubt Verizon will honor the warranty on the broken phone. I wish you the best.

sounds like contacts are on the phone side are damaged or the micro usb port is damaged.
Have you plugged into to a pc just to see if it can "see" the device and connect?
You stated it cannot connect to a pc, so i would suspect you have a bad micro usb port.
if you can connect, its not the port, and try taking an eraser and gently swabbing the contacts on the phone side.
also, make sure when you insert the battery there is an actual contact established. sometimes when pulling/pushing the battery in and out, those contacts sink further into the device and finally when you insert a batter the contact is very poor. you may need a tool or tweezer to just VERY, VERY GENTLY raise the contacts if they sunk in to far......but be careful not to pull too hard/much they can snap and you will probably void any warranty......

I am having the exact same problem. I have replaced the microUSB charging port on the phone and it still doesnt charge with the new port. I'm not sure what is going on. NEED HELP BIG TIME!!!
I'm having the same problem as well. It has been like that for bout a month or so now. I googled it and it seems to be a problem with the s3's and s4's. I'm not so worried about it as I have a spare battery charger and I have the wireless charging receiver on my s4 and it charges my phone just fine.
I had this exact problem I believe...tried several different chargers...everthing. Try turning the phone off and see if it takes a charge. When mine was off it would show a gray battery and vibrate every 5-10 seconds. I figured it was an issue with the charging/usb port but all of the sudden my phone started charging normally and is visible by a computer. Lasted for about 4 days and have been in the clear for about 3 days now. No clue what went wrong or why, but try what I mentioned above by charging with phone off for a half hour or so and see if it has charged at all. If you need a new USB port, not all GS4's have the same port, so you must get a verizon specific one (ebay). usually run about $20..or $65 installed at a phone fixing center. I didnt want to lose MDK, so I was prepared to just charge externally, but ended up not having to...yet
It happened to me also. I had some intermittent luck with blowing out the port with air from my air compressor. But in the end it just stopped working and Verizon sent me a refurbished one.
I Also have this problem!

Have you tried powering down your phone and seeing if that gray battery comes up and you get the vibrations (while plugged into charger)? You may need a new port, but since your under warranty, you could get a replacement unless you want to charge externally
S4 problem after update to 4.3
Hy,
I have a similar problem with my S4 (i9505), won't indicate if it is charging or connect to a computer, but while the charger is conected to S4, the battery level is increasing. When the battery is fully charged S4 is SHUTING DOWN!!!! And it wont start by pressing ON/OFF button, it will only start after I press Vol Down+Power, after goes to Download Mode and press Vol Down .
Tryed in many ways to fix:
- restore-
- hard reset
- changed te battery and charger
-i\ve changed even the usb port (flex cable) and =no results...
All problem started after update to 4.3.... and it is not an isolated case too many people complains about this 'awesome smartphone' with 'awesome issues' .
So, if anyone have any ideea how to solve this issues....
{Sorry for my bad english}
Had the same problem...lasted for about a day, I had to take a dry q-tip and clean the charger and the port where the phone charges and was able to get it working again. If you are rooted and are having issues go to amazon or ebay and get a wireless charger and it should take care of your problems as well

Ok....wireless charger...but what about syncing with the PC?
Now I have JB 4.3 , for a custom ROM I need to use usb cable to connect to PC, rigth?.
For me it is annoying, because I do not know for sure if this is caused by updatind to 4.3 or is a harware problem.
My wife's phone had this issue last night and this morning; charger or computer, it wouldn't charge. I turned it off, took out the battery, SIM and uSD card and put them all back in. After that it started charging again. I don't know if this will solve the problem long term, but so far it seems to have done the trick...

Lucky you...I did more than that, but no result in my case. I found on ''community.verizonwireless'' many more similar cases where ''customers support'' tried to avoid giving the answers for a real solution.
Well, our luck didn't hold. My wife's S4 wouldn't charge again last night. I tried another Samsung charger and a different cable but it wouldn't work either. When we left the house she tried it on the car charger and it worked great. Trying various other chargers we found that a kindle charger wouldn't work, but other third party chargers would. Even her PC USB port seems to work and she doesn't have the drivers loaded. For now she replaced the Samsung charger and cable that came with her phone for one that came as part of an accessory pack and it's happy again.
I have no idea what's going on with the thing. I asked one of the guys at the Samsung booth in Bestbuy and all he had to offer was reflashing the ROM or un-rooting it and doing a warranty exchange...

Can you check, please, if your new data cable has 4 or 5 pins(look to the side that connects to your phone )?
My first s4 done this. So I ended up with a replacement mdk phone after I figured out if you bend the lil piece in the charging port of your phone (not too much BTW) the charger will slide into the port as it's meant to.
Sorry I can't remember the tech term for that lil pin inside the charging port.

I think the S4 is compatible with QI compliant wireless chargers. Amazon has some that are only $20... might be worth the purchase.... hell if I didn't have this tank of a case on I would buy it.

Thanks for your answer, but I already did that....I even changed the flex cable with charging port, no luck for me.....
I think this issue it is not hw problem because, look what I did today:
-I put a new Rom , so I used MIUI FOR I9505 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2306650
And now it behaves even stranger:
S4 is ON and wall charger is conected, (LED IT IS OFF but BATTERY IS BLINKING and is charging ) after battery level go up to 100% and disconect the charger, the LED STARTS TO LIGHT GREEN!!!!
So, now shows that is charging when charger is NOT connected?

Has anyone successfully recovered from the sudden no charging/USB connection issue?

I'm wondering if anyone has suffered with and recovered from the sudden case of no charging/USB>PC recognition?
I've seen countless similar stories across the web, covering many of the Z Family. Some were simple reset jobbies, and I've seen as in-depth as what I'm assuming is an IC being removed, flux cleaned and re-applied (w ww .you tube. com/watch?v=ZyCeNfc99a0).
I purchased a new charger port and also a new battery, as I figured with all the insane constant burning of my pocket, it could use a new one. I'd hoped it was just a charger port issue, but much to my dismay, the issue still persists after fitting them.
I've tried every single button combination "fix", and all to no avail. Multiple leads, charger units, all that polava. Checked and cleaned connections with isopropyl alcohol, checked for burned-out looking mainboard components, at least those that are visible.
I was having minor inconsistent charging issues for a while, up until last Friday. I figured it was the USB port on the phone or the leads, and put it down to general wear and tear.
Last Friday I was at my mates house with super low battery, popped it on charge round his and I noticed it had died completely and kept boot cycling, like the charger was being plugged in and taken out over and over.
I took it out and tried it when I got home with the regular charger, and nothing. My phone is otherwise in mint condition and has been looked after since day one release in the UK.
I'm wondering if some super helpful person here would possibly have some other alternatives that haven't been mentioned, whether a hardware bypass or some trick that isn't amidst the countless cries for help out there.
Many thanks in advance.
Hello,
I have a problem when connecting to a charger it will go in strange charging mode that actually does not charge. It makes the sound like a charger is connected, no charging animation on battery though...
The problem for me it was the USB cable used for charging (i have changed 5 of them in 1 and a half years). Also same behavior happens when using a under 1A wall charger.
P.S. : The USB cables that i have changed they still work fine with other devices/phones .... but not with my Z5C. I`m not sure what but is definetly something wrong withe phone usb port (and it is not dirt).
no, but
I cannot get a usable USB connection to my computer, but if I hold Volume Up while connecting the USB cable to the computer, the charger LED turns red for a moment, then blue. It WILL charge in this mode, which I think is fastboot mode. Someone said it bypasses the charge circuitry or software, which makes me think that maybe I could go into developer mode and turn on OEM unlocking to see if I can stop it from trying to optimize charging. I also have not tried all the USB connection modes yet.
I tried to charge with this blue light technique on the wall charger, but that did not work. Just ran the battery down again and I could not boot the phone.
I know if I press Volume Down while connecting the USB cable to my computer that the charger LED turns green, but I am not sure it will charge in that mode. I think this is for flashing or something, but since my computer does not recognize the USB device no matter what I do, I don't think flashing is an option.
Oh, and when I do charge the phone with the blue light special (old obscure USA discount retailer reference), for some reason the charger LED flashes white every 4 to 5 seconds, but it seems to keep enough charge to get me through at least the day until I can charge again by same method.
Maybe we can keep pooling info here. I got the blue light technique from someone else on this site, so there are people here who know quite a bit about this phone, thankfully.
Well, I had that issue, too (at least it sounds pretty familiar).

Does your phone also believe to be connected to "something" all the time?
I fear there is some IC fried, although I never dared to open my phone.
My "solution" was to talk my local salesman into giving me a (used, but working) replacement phone, and I did not want him to find any traces of DIY
So, no, I never found a technical solution, probably they just scrapped my phone for spare parts, idk.
The root cause for my error (probably) was a faulty charger, therefore I am pretty sure I fried something hardware-like, but depending on your cause, ymmv.
Anyway, trying to clean your USB port, re-soldering the connector and/or replacing the battery sounds like being worth a try, anyway.
// edit: "cat /sys/class/power_supply/usb/present" used to always output 1, even when not connected. On my now-good Z5C this works like it should (connected ->1, not connected -> 0)
Hey people. I have tried all the tricks for several days. Tried several charging cables. Nothing worked for me. I just brought a new phone, and it came with a cheapo charging cable. Decided to plug it into my Xperia and it worked. Maybe a little fairy fixed my phone when I was out buying a new one. Anyway, I'm love my Xperia Z5. Using it right now. Good luck people

Wileyfox Swift 2 won't turn on

Had the phone just over a year, battery ran out, when plugged in gives pulsing red light but won't turn on. Tried two different chargers (both left overnight) that previously worked fine, as well as plugging into laptops. Tried holding down all combinations of buttons for a long time, no dice. The pulsing becomes less regular when I hold buttons down, often switching off mid pulse, as if its trying to boot but then resumes pulsing. I think the battery may be broken/completely flat/ not charging, the phone is not warming up as it normally would when charging.
Anything I haven't tried? I read on the website that the battery is not removeable but there are two screws either side of the plug socket, would I be able to get access from there?

Did you use the same USB cable with both chargers? This happened to me recently and the culprit was the cable that came with the phone, it was obviously broken. Got a new one and the phone charged properly.

Two different chargers, two different cables, both of which had been working the previous day...
A quick search and I can't find any teardown/repair guides for this phone. I did find the service manual for the older one though. If you do go that route it looks like you're going in blind.
Don't you have warranty? I'd return the phone if it were me. (I see you note you have the phone 'just over a year', that's painful if you have only 1 year of warranty but in EU at least, we tend to have 2 years...)
