finally i can go buy the headset

Well - sort of we need the Android N upgrade first
Daydream at last, Daydream at last
This is good news everyone. Daydream and a better than a 1080p screen were two big reasons I went for this puppy. When we get official LineageOS support, that will be the trifecta.
Hi,
I am wondering how they handle the issue with the power button and the daydream headset. (the rubber band is pushing the power button when properly aligned)
I have to move the phone slightly to the right (so it is not centered anymore).

The power button will be disabled when using the headset. They announced this.

I CAN confirm what @xphyle1971 said,
Power button will be disabled via Software when detects 3D mode , in this case Daydream and by the way RUNS super smooth

Been honest, I didn't manage to check which N version was running, but I can tell you DD was running smooth without issues.
any news about when nougat coming to axon 7????
it should be out in this month
I don't really understand the difference between the Daydream headset and a nice adjustable $15 VR headset (and controller).
What can I do with the $109 Daydream headset that I can't do with the cheap one?

Daydream is a little more then the headsets you can buy now. As far as I know the benefits are: The 9-axis controller, a seperate UI only for VR, the hardware of the compatible phones must be able to handle 60 fps in all circumstances. I think there is more but I am not sure.

Does anyone know of an inline headphone adapter that has remote controls and I can plug my own earphones into? I'm talking about something like this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-Headphone-Adaptor-Control-Shuffle/dp/B002J1SCRQ
I heard iphone adapters like above kinda works for Mortplayer and Mixzing (one click pause, two click skip forward but not volume etc.) Anyone tried these or a better solution? I don't want to use the stock ones nor cut and solder a female jack. Thanks
I have one of those, I use it with my old 2nd gen iPod touch when I run... To be honest I've never tried it with my phone but I can test it tonight if you want, just lemme know what app you'd like me to test with. Personally I'm partial to Headset Button Controller since you can pair it up with any music app or even Tasker for other tasks... I still use HTC's stock player most of the time (unless I'm playing Pandora or stuff from my Amazon cloud), the lock screen controls are the most seamlessly integrated imo.
I can almost guarantee the volume buttons won't work for any function tho. I also have a Philips adapter that they used to sell at Target, it's like 3 ft long with the single button, microphone and 3.5mm jack both at the end of the cable... Used to be like $10, haven't seen it in a while tho.
Rather than spend $10+ on a cable tho, I'd recommend just gettin a solid set of IEMs from someone like Meelectronics with the mic/button integrated and positioned at a proper height in the cable. I bought my M9P for like $20 with a discount and according to many on Head-Fi they rival some of the $50 IEMs... They definitely sound better than my old Senheisser CX300 (paid like $60 for those but that was years ago when there were next to no budget IEMs).
You know, unless you have a very specific need for the adapter or you already have a high end pair of headphones.
My 2c
I preorder these http://www.klipsch.com/image-S4A-headphones
I wonder how the Android version of the S4 will handle volume control in conjunction with their app... Could make it worth the price, generally they're nice but not quite worth $100 from what I've read (again, Head Fi's a great place for headphone comparison etc).
I have a Acoustic Research Bluetooth adaptor that turns any headphones/speakers into wireless Bluetooth headphone/speakers. It has controls on it for skipping tracks and volume. It works perfect and I love it!!

i got the klipsch promedias which are basically the same, and the control definitely works but both the music and the phone app try to handle the events. so double-clicking it skips to the next song and at the same time redials the last number. it works well for pause/resume though.

Pretty sure that is your rom you're using.. they haven't properly switched the remote to only work when in a call state or some such. Remote shouldn't do anything but control the music app unless the phone is ringing or you're already using it.

Would you be able to test it with stock Sense music player? I'm wondering if it would make pause and skip next tracks.
My M9P's button didn't work with the stock player on the EVO 4G, which is why I started using Headset Button Controller (which solves the issue and allows me to keep using the stock player), I've yet to try it on the 3D tho. I'll try it tonight with the headphones and both the adapters I mentioned. It might surprise me, I noticed the 3D cuts volume to 50% automatically when you plug in headphones, that's something the 4G definitely didn't do!
Alright, sorry about that, I fell asleep last night prior to testing this. I tested the short 2-3" Belkin iPod adapter that was linked before, as well as the longer Philips adapter with a mic that I mentioned, and my own Meelectronics headphones with in-line mic/button. They all worked exactly the same despite the fact that the first one doesn't have a microphone, the electric signal they all send thru the third marking on the 3.5mm jack is the same after all.
On a stock EVO 3D, one press of the button on any of them will start the music player (with the phone locked or oherwise), and a second press will obviously pause it. A double click or press will dial your last dialed number, and pressing and holding will invoke voice search just like long pressing the search button. Pressing the button while the phone rings answers the call as expected and pressing it again hangs up. There's no triple press functionality and the volume buttons on the Belkin thing did nothing at all.
With Headset Button Controller installed you can change any of that behavior, and assign functions to triple press, amongst a lot of other things... And it integrates just fine with the stock player, so if you want more control over your button functions, it's probably worth the $2.60-ish. If anyone wants it tested with any other app just lemme know, tho HBC probably covers the expanded needs of most even if your particular player doesn't.
HBC also has support for what it calls left and right buttons but these definitely don't correspond with the volume buttons on a standard iPod adapter, not sure what headsets have 3 buttons which HBC might recognize... That Kplisch set mentioned before might be one.
I have the Klipsch S5i & only the play & pause works, double tap radials the last call & the volume buttons are unsupported.

Dont discount the Bluetooth stereo headsets,
Did anyone ever answer the OP's actual question? I need an adapter for my own headphones with a pause/play button that will work on an LG Optimus. I do NOT want a Bluetooth option and I do NOT want recommendations for headphones. I have a set of headphones that I love, but they don't have a pause/play button. I'm also not willing to cut and splice/solder. I don't need volume or skip track buttons. I just need to be able to quickly pause the audiobook I'm listening to without unlocking my phone.
All I can find is adapters for iphones and ipods, but I need one for my android phone.
i got an htc phone. can you recommend earphones that have a mic and volume control? i need these 2 features. thanks.
Every android phone I know of doesn't support volume buttons on headsets. However, this app will let you do everything you need with just the middle button (Which android DOES support).

But as far as recommendations, I recommend skull candy, their drivers are really impressive.

i saw some earphones on amazon that has mic and vol control for $20. i think i'll buy those and download the app you mentioned.
you also mentioned skull cnady. can you recommend low cost earphones from skull candy with mic and vol control? thanks.
These are similar to the ones I use - $30 on Amazon:

Though I got the slightly more expensive ones. These have the same drivers, just a flat cord which looks nicer and tangles less - $40 on Amazon:

I don't think this is an LG Optimus G specific issue, but it's now the only thing that bugs me about having an Android, and not an iPhone.
I bought an RHA SA950i [http://www.amazon.com/RHA-SA950i-Portable-Headphone-Titanium/dp/B008JFRRYK] but the 3 buttons (top = vol up, mid = pause/play, bottom = vol down) don't work correctly. The middle button, play/pause/answer/end works fine, but the other two don't. I can't turn my volume up or down with the headset. Is there an app that will allow me to use these two buttons, or a kernel mod, or am I destined to live without the two buttons?

i think there is no any application that will let you contol volume using volume button because lg optimus g doesnt support volume up and down button.
Apple-compatible volume buttons will not work with any android device. iOS and android use different physical specifications for those buttons. There is no app or mod (that I am aware of) that will allow you to use them, because the base android will not interpret the signal at all. Apple compatible headphones have been successfully modified to work with android. You need to take them apart and add a couple resistors.
it sucks

both my headsets operate the same way. in fact i didnt even get the microphone to work without finding an old iphone 3g headphone converter. You have to make sure that the headphones that you are buying have only one button to ensure that you will atleast get the microphone to work. iphones get the better headphone support, I'm not sure why.

To my chagrin, my new Xiaomi Piston earbuds, likely the best value earbuds in recent memory, do not work with my Z2 because it (stupidly) uses the CTIA jack rather than the conventional jack. Can anyone recommend a set of earbuds with 3-button control that works with the Z2? Thanks!

You can still use your Xiaomi Piston earphones with Sony Xperia Z2. But you need a CTIA to OMTP adapter. Or you can press and hold mic button on Xiaomi Piston. Because that makes a short circuit and you can use it then. But the buttons won't work.
So, long story short, you need a CTIA to OMTP adapter.

Why don't you use Sony's earphone? Such as MH1C that has 4 button control or NC31EM for Noise Canceling.

Those may not be bundled with z2, Since pistons 2 are already that good, I want to use it instead.
my friend bought pistons in india from flipkart online shop and i have a z2 updated to latest version. and they worked perfectly fine with all the buttons working properly. when i bought earlier they were not working when i had 4.4.2 FW.
Simply install the app called soundabout to activate the output on the headphones.
This way you can use every headset you want.

Hey XDA'ers,
When it comes to buying headsets, iPhones owners have about a million compatible headset's while android users have to always play the guessing game not knowing what works, not fun at all. This thread is here to help. I made a thread like this for the Nexus 6P that I felt was helpful and I thought Pixel and Pixel XL users could use the same info.
this is where this list goes to bed every night
so everyone report so we can get a nice big list, commenting with the following info can be helpful:
1. [IMPORTANT] The name of the headset and a link to the exact model you bought
2. Do both volume buttons and a Microphone work?
3. Headset sound quality? 1 (bad) or 5 (Perfect) You can elaborate if you'd like.
4. Anything else? .... or just tell me your proud of me unlike my mother and father jk, I'm awesome.
*You can include bluetooth headsets to give feedback but those won't be on the list. Bluetooth headsets never really have issues since bluetooth an open standard.

Here's a few I tested to add to your list:
Xiaomi Piston v2
Yes. Tested with Poweramp, Google Assistant, and Phone. Volume up/down and play/pause/disconnect call/Google Assistant work from the 3 buttons.
Purely subjective, but 3.75.
Oddly enough, the v2 doesn't work right on last year's Nexus 5x, but works fine on the Pixel.
Xiaomi Piston v3
Yes. Tested with Poweramp, Google Assistant, and Phone. Volume up/down and play/pause/disconnect call/Google Assistant work from the 3 buttons.
Purely subjective, but 4.
The v3s work equally well on the Pixel and the 5x, and are much lighter weight than the v2s.
HTC One (m7) earbuds
Yes. Tested with Poweramp, Google Assistant, and Phone. Play/pause/disconnect call/Google Assistant work from the single button.
Purely subjective, but 3.5.
Not the greatest earbuds, but they came with my m7, and sound decent enough. Works fine with the Pixel.
I use the galaxy s7 earbuds and they work fine with volume control and play pause answer call and hang up call.
Dont go hating but Apple Earpods are good... 4 on audio scale but Volume buttons dont work.

Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 for Android
Yes. Tested with Google Play and Skype. Volume and pause, skip etc plus in line works on skype
I guess 4 - as good as it ever is
Slightly louder in right ear but this might be imagination...
1. Degauss Labs Sabotage Royale 3 Button Headset
2. NO. Volume up launches Google Assitant. Volume down and middle button work fine.
3. Sound quality is very good I think: 4
1. Nocs NS500 Android 3 Button Headset
2. Yes. Volume up/down and middle button all work fine.
3. Sound quality is very good I think: 4
1. Samsung HS330 (aka OEM for Galaxy S4, S5, etc)
2. Yes. Volume up/down work. Mic works, mic button short press to mute or answer; long press to end call.
3. Sound quality = 3 to 3.5. I am not an audiophile but imo they are better than some regular earbuds.

Amazon Premium Headphones
Can't post links yet.
All buttons work except volume up brings up Google Assistant
Decent for the price, frustrated they don't fully work as it took me a long time to find a pair that worked with my Nexus 5X (these did). I can't wear in ear buds so choices are very limited...
a-jays 5
the a-jays 5 work great, i got them for $30 CAD on black friday but they are worth more!
All the buttons work (vol-up and down, middle is play/pause and long press activates google assistant)
there is also an app that allows customization of the buttons
1. Klipsch X6i In-Ear Headphones
2. Volume buttons do nothing, but mic works fine and center button answers/ends calls and plays/pauses/FF tracks - long press brings up Google Assistant
3. Quailty - 4. Very clean reference sound but lots of cord noise is transmitted when walking or moving. Needs a bit more volume (voltage drive) to register the same db as other headsets. Mic works well for calls on the street, but does pick up some wind noise.
4. Klipsch has patented oval silicone ear sleeves that fit well and comfortably.
1. Logitech Ultimate Ears 600vi Noise-Isolating Headset
2. Volume buttons do nothing, but mic works fine and center button answers/ends calls and plays/pauses/FF tracks - long press brings up Google Assistant
3. Quailty - 5. I love these things. I've never owned a double or triple armature IEM so maybe I just don't know what I'm missing, but these guys have sounded great over the past 4 years. Mic is only good for indoor conversations. Picks up alot of wind and ambient noise
4. Cord could be much better, mine has separated from the plug due to stress and will need to be replaced, but the ear buds are going strong. The retail packaging includes two sets of Comply foam tips for awesome fit and feel
Just tried these with my Google Pixel 1....
1. 1MORE E1003 Piston Classic In-Ear Headphones
2. NO. Volume down not working at all. All other buttons working fine.
3. <unable to comment on sound quality, they'll be going straight back>
Desperate to find some new headphones for my Pixel 1. Its proving rather difficult to find a set that actually work. Google really cocked up the headphone jack on the Pixel 1. Suppose its a non-issue on their latest phone though since it has no jack.

Does volume down really work on these? I'd have expected the circuitry to be the same as the Piston Classics I've just tried. HOWEVER that post is from Nov 2016 so it's quite likely the one's I have are a updated version.

I'm still here
Although I recently upgraded to the Pixel 2. I tested the Triple Drivers like once with the 3.5mm to USB C adapter, and remember them to be working well, with full button controls.
Have you experienced no VOL-Down on other headphones? Honestly my first guess would be that you just got a lemon with a broken button. If Vol-up is working, it would be extremely strange for Vol-down to be broken by design. I'm Pretty sure the OMTP vs CTIA has more to do with the microphone working than buttons, but it might be worth checking out as well.
I will say the Triple drivers are champs, can take a beating, and sound spectacular. Still going strong today, although I have moved to 3rd party replacement buds. I could not find first party replacements.

He's also a fan of the Pixel, so I bet he'd mention if there's any issues. Although I didn't reread before posting this.

Its a completely different playing field if you use the USB-C to 3.5mm adapter rather than plugging into the headphone jack. This is the first time I've ever had VOL-DOWN only issues. I immediately had the same suspicions as you, i.e. fault button, but I tried them with an iPhone and the button worked fine. The button also works fine if I use the headphones on my Pixel 1 via the USB-C to 3.5mm adpater (that came with my wifes Pixel 2).
