Downgrade Moto Z Android 7.0 To 6.0 - Moto Z Questions & Answers

Hi, got this phone for 1 month now used MM for 2 weeks then updated to Nougat but I didnt like it. Now I want to downgrade to MM is it possible with RSD Lite? If yes how? If no will factory reset solve battery drain, awfull notifications, over heating problems?

How did you upgrade? If you updated the bootloader to the N version, I'm not sure if you can revert back to MM.

OTAs are the Evil. :silly:

Updated via OTA. I could downgrade Samsung S4 isnt it possible with Moto Z? I did hard reset, downloaded my apps then closed my phone and charged it. I don't know what happened while phone was booting but it wasn't %100 battery charge btw. This battery life is killing me..

I'm sure you are not able to get back to Marshmallow because the OTA installs a new bootloader that is incompatible with the original Marshmallow

So I have to wait for fix eh

Which version did you apply?

If you updated to Nougat via OTA, there is currently no safe and simple way to downgrade back to Marshmallow as the OTA also updates the bootloader, meaning that Nougat is the oldest OS that is supported on that bootloader.
That's why I unlocked the bootloader on mine and used the technique outlined in the following thread. Not only do you get a perfectly working Nougat OS but also allows you to keep the old bootloader should you decide to downgrade to Marshmallow.

Ah, I was hoping you had the first release of N. But it looks like you have the current one.

If someone reveals easy and safe way to downgrade please tag me I don't have much time to check forums

Nougat upgrade OTA leaves you in a tough position
My new Moto Z took an update from stock MM to Nougat 3 days after I got it. Stupid me, I should not have accepted the OTA update. But I did. And you cannot go back to MM because the update contains a new bootloader that makes it a one way trip.
Search my other posts in the last few days to see that you are not totally prevented from unlocking and rooting. But unlocking the bootloader leaves a trail forever because a solid state fuse gets tripped forever.

I did not downgrade from 7.0.
I unlocked the bootloader and rooted the phone with twrp 3.xx and then used phh's Superuser.
But I must admit that I have not loaded a third party ROM yet. I want to load stock 7.1.1 when Motorola releases it in February or March.

Question would it be possible to use RDS light or the program at the beginning of this form to unlock set bootloader and then proceed to route

Android 7 OTA after recovery flash

Hello,
I have the following phone:
Moto Z
XT1650-03
RETEU
Android 6.0.1 MPL24.246-45
When I got the phone I only unlocked the bootloader en flashed TWRP recovery.
Now the Android 7 OTA update is released. I got the popup for de OTA update but it wasn't able to install the update because of TWRP Recovery.
After that I flashed the recovery with a stock recovery from the stock Android 6.0.1 MPL24.246-17 ROM, found in a Moto Z official/stock ROM forum here on XDA. After that I downloaded the OTA update again on my Moto Z, it starts with installing the update, then it restarts in recovery, it seems work fine when I see the stock recovery screen with installing the update, but after a few minutes I get an "Error!" with the "Android man with open belly" symbol. Luckily the phone stil boots and is working fine.
What's going wrong with the OTA update? Mismatch between the rom (MPL24.246-45) and recovery (MPL24.246-17) version?
My goal is to get stock Android 7 on my Moto Z. Who can tell me what's the best step for me to achieve this? Should I try another recovery to get the OTA update working?
Thank you!
Same happened to me when i tried updating the new 540mb update over Nougat. I think it happened because of the kernel (disabling force encryption), not sure :/

Ok, thank you for your answer. But I did not do anything with encryption... And how did you solve this, are you able to install that update now?
I gave my phone to the service center today and told them that it happened after the OTA update. I have my fingers crossed that they don't find out about the unlocked bootloader before fixing it.

Possible. Flash stock recovery from Rogers firmware which is a -45 subrelease.
Anyway I wouldn't upgrade by OTA...

Ok, I already flashed de stock .45 Recovery from Rogers.
My plan is the following:
- Reset device to factory defaults
- Download the OTA update to the device, just how it's meant to be
- See if it wil update successfully now
Or what can you recommend me to get to fully stock Nougat? This one:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z/development/android-nougat-moto-z-versions-t3506342
Or wait and stay on Android 6.0.1 till there is more information/ROM's/updates about this device? I know something about flashing/ROM's (before I had a OnePlus One with Cyanogen) but not as much as you guys do and I don't want to brick my device

The recommended update for Moto Z

What would be the best (most stable) update for a fresh, purely stock (reteu 6.0.1, no OTA update, bootloader not yet unlocked) Moto Z?
Update through OTA and then root? Would it prevent me from ever going back to Marshmallow?
Leave it without OTA update, root and then flash new ROM? Any recommendation for stability, root and moto-mods support?

If you take the 7.x update then you can not go back to 6.x because it installs a new bootloader. That said, others here may have their own advice. Personally I have had no problems at all with my retus version.

Are you still on 6.x or 7.x ?
If 7.x - did you update through OTA?
Are there any reasons at all to stay on Marshmallow then?

I am on stock 7.1.1
As there is still no OTA 7.1.1 for my Moto Z (which is strange, it seems that reteu got it already), I will probably have to take a more 'manual' way...
I will need unlocked bootloader to root anyway

Pull out the sim card, reboot your device and push the sim card back. Wait a while, then check in settings, about phone, softwareupdate if the 7.1.1 OTA is there.
If you're still on stock marshmallow you should receive several OTAs, one after the other.

Check, if your simcard is recognized by your device under settings, about phone, status of sim....if there is no provider or imei number, try another sim. I recall someone said, the OTA checks for the sim imei. If that doesn't help, try a factory reset and start from 0.

You can try this to get OTAs
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z/development/tool-motorola-ota-link-generator-tool-t3537039
Factory reset and replacing sim has worked - OTAs are here
Stock 7.1.1 - no problems so far, now I will have to root it.

Downgrading from Oreo to stock MM?

Hello, is it possible to downgrade to stock MM rom directly from Oreo,or it has to be downgraded to NN first and then to MM ? I dont care about OTA updates and i wont use them, does it mean i can safely downgrade my android version without fear of bricking the device?
Thanks in advance !

Should I upgrade to Pie?

Currently using firmware 47.1.A.12.270 with root+drm fix. I'm considering to upgrade my phone to Pie but i'm unsure about its stability. I wanna hear how stable is Pie and is it good to upgrade?

Since you are already rooted - you could (probably) downgrade... although I am not able to find official firmware for OREO.
My device is 0FCE:01F3 (seems that there is a different version of Sony Xperia XZ1 with id 0FCE:B00B).
I guess that you have nothing against unlocking the bootloader
So in other words: you could try upgrading and see (although way back might be difficult).
As for me... I have accepted the upgrade and I regret that.
Android 9 Pie blocks one feature that is mandatory for me: call recording is no longer possible.
There should be some gesture navigation - it is not present in pie on xz1.
Except that... you should be going into a better direction. I am not sure about root availability for xz1... shouldn't be a problem I guess?
P.S.
I bought this phone only because my previous (it was gt-n910c) had some HW issues with calls. I wanted a phone with NFC and my assumption was I won't root it (to use banking apps without magisk). Now it seems that my calls are flawed and I might need to use magisk+root... and I am not able to physically remove bloatware (especially spyware called fatbook or something like that). Shame on google, Shame on sony.
As your bl is already unlocked download Xperia firm and see if Pie is available in your region, if so download Newflasher (read how to use it), there is a root guide posted here for Pie.

There no point in relocking your bootloader. Starkiller uploaded the full ota. You need to reflash firmware and dont root it. My guide has the instructions for reflashing stock. After you do that put the ota file in the root of your sd card then go to settings, apps, and find Moto update services and allow it to have access to your sd card. Then go the update Moto software from settings
---------- Post added at 04:23 PM ---------- 3Previous post was at 04:18 PM ----------
But the ota starkiller uploaded is for the boost Mobile variant xt1922-7 not for xt1922-9 sorry I forgot about that. Do not use the ota I mentioned. Best you can do untill your pie update is uploaded on mirrors is either wait for the ota to hit your device then reflash stock firmware then take the pie ota or just wait. Either way you still need to be on unrooted stock firmware. relocking your bootloader does absolutely nothing anymore basically.
Wait, so if I get the XT1922-9 model (Best Buy/Target) I'll be stuck on Oreo? I guess that's the downside of not getting a carrier-locked phone.
Heres the link to the US Cellular Pie https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/jeter/official/USC/

Can anyone confirm this as a fact? I bought an unlocked model XT1922-9 from Lenovo direct.
I actually want to remain on 8/Oreo because 9/Pie blocks call recording apps. :fingers-crossed:
If I got stuck on Pie, I'd have to root in order to get call recording back. I'd rather not bother!
if anyone is bummed Motorola is taking so long to update our unlocked g6 play/wanting updated vendor and stuff to run pie gsi's and looking to flash pie for unlocked retus jeter (xt1922-9,) just flash the USC version on lolinet. Everything I have tested so far works just fine, only thing I have not tested yet is sim(calling, text, data.) My IMEI is still being shown in settings so I'm guessing when I pop in my verizon sim everything will be fine but YMMV. Make sure your bootloader is unlocked first before flashing because the boot.img will give a bad key message but it works fine.
https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/jeter/official/USC/
in about phone, software channel still says US retail even with the USC firmware.

Maybe I should have phrased it better. Is Pie coming to this model at all? It seems like Pie is being reserved for carrier-branded phones, perhaps as incentive to get a carrier-branded phone instead of an unlocked non-carrier-branded phone. If that is not the case, is Motorola/Lenovo waiting till the last minute? Cause Android Q will be here in a few months (August).
