Hi everyone, been lurking around the forums but never bothered to post much outside XDArticles.
I have had my Galaxy S2 since launch, and whilst a good phone, I'll be hopping to the OnePlus 3T soon. Because my phone still works (and is running CM12.1) I was going to give it to my not-so tech-savvy mother to use.
Whilst I could teach her how to use Lolipop no bother, is there an "easier" to use ROM out there? Or is the CM ROM still the easiest no -frills option?
(P.S I won't need help to flash etc, so I am not too fussed about changing)
Thanks for the help!

For this case i would recommend latest cm 11 KitKat.
I use it for family members, who do not want it to "complicated".
This one is quite up to date:

For gapps use latest pico open gapps.

If your mom is familiar with stock rom, you can try "Neat" rom it's stock based and have great performance and battery life.
Thanks for the suggestions guys!
IIRC, CM11 uses Dalvik RunTime whilst CM12 used ART. From my time with CM12, I felt my phone was laggier and more battery hungry than CM11, although, these forums are saying they saw improvements in CM13.
So, I think I'll replace the battery first, then flash Neat ROM and test. If the results aren't great, then I'll give CM11 a go as I remember that being quite good.

I need the best, most working, stable ROM & kernal combo available for my fassy, I prefer TW though? I use the phone as a daily driver, mainly I use almost every option that stock offers on a day-to-day basis so it must all be functional... And customization is always a great thing, please comment with any helpful info on this. Any helpful info on this is much appreciated, I dropped my EvO in the lake a week or so ago and had to go buy my Fassy. I am not new to rooting or ROMing phones, but I have found it is most helpful to get others insight on these types of things before trying EVERY ROM for a day or so lol? I am running Baked JB right now, but as I said I'm a little partial to the TW OS, and battery life isnt as fantastic.
Thanks in advance,

Try GeeWiz 2.8.1 with its own kernel. It's still Gingerbread though. There aren't any TouchWiz ICS or JB roms out there. You could also try AOKP M6 and install a TouchWiz theme from the play store.

I'm now running cm10 and loving it. Everything works.

Like scarfman said, geewiz 2.8 is the best TW rom for stability...Superclean 3 was also good , just had to deal with a random reboot.

I'm currently running (pa_fascinate-4.0-BETA-20140103.zip) it's a KitKat 4.4.2 ROM. GAPPS are (pa_gapps-modular-full-4.4.2-20140318-signed.zip). It runs great with no Lag. To install you need to use Team Win Recovery.

superclean was the best during my days with the fascinate with the stock kernel. good times
Hi there!
First, i want to say hello to everyone, because i've just registered to the site.
Second, i want to discuss a problem here, or rather ask for help about it.
So, i have my GT-I9070 for more than a year now, i've buyed it when it was released in our country, Hungary.
I've updated my OS yesterday, from 2.3.6 Gingerbread to 4.2.1 Jellybean.
I did the update because my GB was very slow, laggy, and buggy. (It was stock ROM, stock kernel, and all the things reversed back to the stock(although, i made some modding and OS switching, but i've repaired them all.))
The update to 4.2.1 did not solve the problem, so i've decided to search for more answers. I've found out from other sites, that many people have/had this issue, and that almost everyone solved it with a Custom Kernel. So after rooting, installing CWM, i've installed CoCore Kernel 5.6, then 6.2, then 8.2.
None of them helped. It's still the same useless, laggy, and slow ****. I can't even write on it, just roughly, because it's so slow now.
So, I would like to know your opinion of solving this problem of mine, because I can't find any more answers.
Thank you all, for listening and sharing.
Sincerely yours,
Vugil.
Helping, not sharing, sorry.

How?
Well, the Kernel isn't the ROM!
You really have to flash a custom ROM, to get a smooth usage.
BUT, Custom ROMs tend to suck your battery dry, faster than stock roms!
so unless someone whispered you the perfect settings for minimal higher battery usage, you shouldn't try any custom rom, except when you want to try it out so badly and you know what you are doing.

Hi guys, kindly take my post serious, and give me honest opinions, let me explain my situation.
Like many of you, I have LG G2, International 802, i am confused whether to flash 4.4 Custom ROM (CM11 seems to be only relaible choice) or stay at stock 4.2.2 because phone is just a phone and all Apps work anyway.
Unlike most of you, i am from Pakistan, i purchased G2 brand new in Black, because its not launched officially here, which means i am under no warranty or unroot problems to get repairs etc. from company, so losing warranty is not an issue for me.
I am confused, whether to root, flash CM 11 or stay on stock and wait for official 4.4. I know even official 4.4 will look same as 4.2.2. Stock android look like Nexus is my preference, i like it, but reading so many people having troubles with custom ROMSs, and the difficulty, makes me confused, either to stay as it is, or make a move and flash CM11.
My past experience of flashing ROMs, was when i had back up Xperia 10 mini, i use to flash CM9 on it easily and use to go back on stock as well, which android 2.1 for it.
Guys kindly with your experience, should i go for flashing, install CWM recovery, official semi touch one and flash CM11 in normal way, or should i stay satisfied as i am today? will flashing CM11 and its bugs going to ruin my daily use?
Also tell me, i read intensively how to come back to stock, but many people having trouble in that as well?
Should i make a move or should i sit idle? I know many users like me, must confused like me, your help can be fruitful for us?
I'd say go for cleanrom or rayglobe and find some mods for stock lots of things you can do with xposed

Thanks for your kind reply, being less familiar with ROMs, i assume that CM11 is the best and relatively more professional then most other ROM developers, i feel there product have more chance of being less buggy, thats what i assume, since going closer to stock android is my goal, not the tweaks as yet, in hate i hate processor option in CM11, why a user need to mess with clocking. I can be wrong here, frequent ROM user must know better which ROMS are more stable.
Xposed, i think i can use that with stock LG ROM as well, well i don't want to change menu bar and notification bar because i read in xposed forums, lots of people are having not to smooth time with it, it must be ok but i am ok without it, smaller bar or normal bar. Only thing i dont like about LG stock menu bar is, no multitasking key.
So you suggest me, to dive into a custom rom and you prefer a clean ROM for me.

I miss look and feel of stock android, stock is LG is sort of rip off, of Touch Wiz, i don't need air gestures, i need smoothness, fluidness, i like dark colours of stock pull down bar, and other things of my friends Galaxy Nexus.
The first thing I did after verifying the G2 I received was a keeper (first one was a dud) was install a different rom. I went though several 4.3 roms and even tried some of the 4.4 roms that came out but in the end as of right now I running a lite version of the stock rom (Malladus). I didn't think I would ever run stock but I found a lot of the features I enjoyed with custom roms I was able to get by using Xposed and stock seemed to be more stable and I really wanted a fully functional camera. Even though there are still a few things about the stock rom I don't like, they are very minor and i can live with them.

Well, thanks for the reply, i know stock has features, most i don't use, incredibly i don't knock on either, as i got use to of buttons, yeah, call and sms blocker, i hope CM11 may have them, i want to change for the look and feel of Stock android, and hopefully fluidness, as far as features are concerned, LG stock must have them all covered?
So you have reverted back to LG stock rom, lite version, then why not the official stock rom? HMM.

I mainly went with a lite stock rom for the debloat. I did run official stock and just disable things that I didn't want running but even after that there were a few things I couldn't disable plus I don't care for a lot of the LG apps. Malladus has a base that is debloated with most of the LG apps but also provides a LG App package that you can flash afterwards for those that want the LG Apps.. seemed like the best of both worlds. I will admit I did manually install a few of the left out LG apps like the Remote and Quick Memo.
OP this is solely on you, only you can figure out what will be your daily driver/ROM. With so many variables involved with Members, apps/usage so on....you have to just flash and test. Just because one has the same device does not mean you will have the same outcome or results.

Merry Christmas.

My dad has GSII (I9100, the "original" S2) and it feels kinda sluggish compared to my One S C2(pretty much HTC Sensation) and it also lacks app space(I have moved all of them to SD card but still cant install new apps). Since I'm going to reinstall it I might aswell install some other ROM. It needs to be almost fully stable with all the features working and it would be nice if it had touchwiz(my dad isnt a power user and doesnt like to adopt to new things). I don't know how much faster non-touchwiz ROMs are so you can suggest some of those too. Also I don't really know yet how to install custom ROMs on GSII except for the stock one but I'm sure I'll find info on how to do that. Oh, performance and battery life should be balanced although my dad has 4 batteries
Thank you for your help!
EDIT: after some searching I have realized that 95% of roms are without touchwiz... So just suggest any ROM that is stable and smooth

Hey!
To root your phone, head here: http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/galaxys2-i9100-root-android412-jellybean-install-clockworkmod-445008
1. Neat ROM: is perhaps based on Touchwiz. Also, it has had a huge support. So, it should fit your Dad's expectations.
2. SlimSaber 4.4.4: I guess pretty much the best non-touchwiz ROM for the S2. And stable as well!
3. Go ahead and try out Lollipop ROMs as well, although they are still under work and can have some bugs: CM12.1, Resurrection Remix , BlissPOP, SlimLP and many more.
Hope this helps.
Regards.

Big thanks for your help man! I think I'll try both of the ROMs you suggested, but not going to try lollipop because my classmate has GSII with it and its just too buggy. Gonna report back on how it went.

Try http://www.cyanogenmod.org/, that's how i started with custom ROM's, they have "idiot friendly" way of installing their ROM, you just install app form google store and follow setup proces, really easy. Very stable ROM also. I still use Cyanogenmod, bus some unnoficial lolipop version. I recomend it!
Slimsaber 4.4.4 by fusionjack. Would recommend it to anyone on XDA and to friends and family.

Tried it but dad didnt like it so I installed him NeatRom and everything is working really well.
I am receiving my new Elephone P9000 this week and wondered what the general feeling of current users is regarding to running with what Elephone updates send or wether a custom rom makes the phone more stable, useable etc etc? As said, it will be new out of the box, never customised. I know many things will be subjective but as an ¨everyday¨ user, what advice can you offer to get the best from the phone.
Thanks in advance,
I Can Not Tell anything about Stock, becaise my First move was, to Flash Eragon, when I received my Phone Back in June and I'm incredibly Happy with it. The only down-side is that the developer of Eragon does Not continue developing the p9000 Rom, so Users Can Not get a newer Version. Nonetheless It's a Great Rom and I personally can recommed it.

Hi, thanks for your reply.
My phone arrived today and I have had a good play, so far it seems excellent, no problems and have updated all of the OTA updates available.
The problem you face regarding your beloved Rom is one that worries me, I guess until such time as Elephone stop updating themselves I should stick with the phone as it is. I only wish I was clever enough to create Rom´s myself.
