New z5 Compact - where to start - Xperia Z5 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
i'm getting a new z5 compact today and I'm really exited to void the warranty and improve that phone.
But where to start? I read a little bit through the topics and I'm not quite sure what happens to the camera if I root and unlock the bootloader.
I'm looking for a slim and fast rom, maybe lineage, with working camera as the original and even better battery life.
Thanks in advance for your help and guidance

Firstly, if you want to play games, flash SmarTemperatureX. I use modified stock rom, but AndroPlus is also great, I think. For better batterylife, idk. I personally just put CPU clocks down a bit.
Unlocking bootloader wipes your TA key, which removes camerafeatures like denoise and maybe some other processing. DRM fix restores them, but I'd advice to backup your TA file.
Nougat is far superior to Marshmallow, and Lineage seems to have a really good camera application, but I run stock rom.
In really low light, you might find that using manual mode in 2 megapixel mode looks the best, as it has the least noise. Often looks a bit sharper in low light even lol. Sony's stock camera app is okey, but I haven't tried ANY other, so I can't tell you which is best. 8mp is often better than 23 too, and even outdoors in good lighting, 3/2 mp sometimes gives you a more pleasing picture.

Official 4.0.4 for Ray question

Hi there,
So 4.0.4 build ICS 4.1.B.0.587 has been out for Ray for quite some time now and I cant seem to find any topic, video, ANYTHING about how good it actually is?
Going to Sony forums is quite a hassle since most users there arent that tech savvy and you get puzzled answers at best...
So Im asking you guys, have you tried it, how good is it and is it worth upgrading over the old GB?
Specifily Id like to know about these things:
- HD Video recording still lags, stutters?
- Dialer opening up in this century (or is it taking 5 s still)?
- Overall smoothness any better?
Thanks, peace out!
Laggy, mono sound, led notification bug, call menu bug, worse battery life.
It's a downgrade not an upgrade.
Since I don't have xperia ray so I used my frnd's for some days and I used it first in gb, then in ics..
-I hardly suffered any faults in hd video recording(except that while starting the recording it took a bit time, nearly 4seconds for it to start)
-For dialer, I didn't found any flaws, lags etc.
-Smoothness for better in gb(as expected)
Going on gaming the smaller games worked fine...but as soon as I downloaded some big games they took sometime before starting and during playing too I experienced some lags...
Overall I would like to say that,
GB: Smooth, good for gaming, fast
ICS: Nice looks, more apps supported, more features(some features that u may not find in gb)
But this is my review and further the choice is yours. Using gb or ics depends on the purpose you're using your mobile.
If u like mah review, Press thanks,
Regards,
Abhinav

Really appreciate both posts Would like to hear more opinions if there are any...
It seems most opinions about the new ICS build are totally contradictionary which is weird :cyclops:
Oh and how is the camera quality? Im guessing its still compressed heavily?
Well, make a backup and try it by yourself. I've only lasted 10 minutes with ICS on my phone, buggy and slow.
No way to backup / restore back from ICS to GB without voiding the warranty right?

Root your phone and install CWM recovery... Without unlocking bootloader...
Rooting doesn't void warranty but unlocking bootloader does...
Then make a nandroid backup by CWM recovery
If it's not too late already, you don't need CWM.
You'll only need your stock rom (installed on your phone), Sony Update Service, and FlashTool. You'll be able to backup your stock ROM into a flashable FlashTool image.

I extremely appreciate all the replies
Due to some GB problems that persisted I decided to take a leap of faith on this one and install the official ICS.In time I`ll write down my experience so that anyone with questions will finally be able to get some straight answers without hopping from forum to forum... Till then here are my initial thoughts:
So far I can list some general pros and cons
Pros: Sleek interface with new options, far better multitasking, gingerbread bugs fixed, better camera settings and handling
Cons: Hiccups during usage of a lot of applications, Sony specific bugs (as in Mono video recording, turning off sound doesnt work on unlock screen), extremely slow stock android browser (opera for instance is butter smooth, smoother and faster than in GB)
To say a few quick words, interface doesnt lag (dialer for example comes up in a microsecond) and is generally smooth but applications like facebook tend to have hiccups that can be disruptive if you enjoy smoothness. There are some weird bugs aswell which I dont really mind since they aint that important and should be easily addressed with the new update (hopefully). All in all im happy I upgraded. GB had connectivity dropoffs for me and the 3G or HSDPA wasnt really all that - but it is a lot better on ICS. All in all if I try to be objective ICS on Sony feels a little BETAish, I think its not optimized as it should be with the hiccups since in some areas they are quite heavy while in other scenarios during hard multitasking you cant notice any hiccups or lag at all - super smooth... Optimization would be the key word here Havent tried WiFi so no comment on that since I dont use it.
Bottom line, Im happier with ICS than with GB but not everyone would be. Especially if you value the "complete feel"

Issues related to xperia z2's 4.4.4 update

I was thinking to upgrade my Z2 to 4.4.4 but when I saw the posts of the people regarding the bad battery life, camera lags, overheating, etc, I thought for the time being to stay on 4.4.2. Still everyday I am thinking to update because of the extra features included in the update. But on the other hand I am a bit worried ? about the issues present in the update.
I just want some people to suggest me to upgrade to 4.4.4, stay on 4.4.2 ,wait for bug fixes or wait for Lollipop ? 5.0.
Upgrade ppl are always complaining personally I don't find any such stuff in 4.4.4
Same here. No problems. Everything seems to be working fine.
Battery draining easily. I do not know how to solve it. I've done wipes, I have root and recovery
Se gostou do meu trabalho, clique em thanks.
Xperia Z2 Sensation by Ogunja - D6543
After flashing pre-rooted rom I lost the active NC, battery was draining. restored my TA and flashed stock tft, all issues gone, no root though. i'll wait for a root sollution. it's my daily driver and must be stable. I use the active NC allot at the office
at the previous version I think Sony did not implement to much limitations for missing TA, now they did apperantly
Wrong Thread
This doesn't belong in Original Development...
For me the only problem is battery drain, which is approximately 15% quicker than 4.4.2...
But not a big issue,I can live with that until fixed...
Camera lags but actual picture quality is improved,so not a problem...
No overheating issues for me...
Music quality is improved over previous built significantly! No X loud but still descent level...
More responsive phone and other new features
Battery life is equivalent to .314 for me, no issues otherwise.
Battery life is equal, if not better than before. I did do a factory reset afterwards, not sure if that has anything to do with it.
"Camera Lag" issue I hear some whining about I noticed right away. The camera seemed brighter, I lowered the ISO in manual mode, Perfectly smooth after I lowered it. Seems Sony has tweaked the ISO in Auto a bit, which would cause the slight sluggishness in low light conditions. Not a bug, just adjustments.

İs there any solution for Drm Keys ?

Hello,I am planning to buy Xperia Z2,but I have a problem.According to my research,ıf I use Cyanogenmod,Carbon Rom(except for stock rom),I cant use Drm Keys on these roms;so,Camera,Voice..etc performances will affect thanks to lack of Drm Keys.İs there any solution for this problem ? Cant we use Drm Keys on custom roms? I am waiting for your opinions, suggestions
downgrade
root
backup TA partition (where your drm keys are)
unlock bootloader
have fun
flash stock firmware
restore TA
enjoy your reinstated warranty
DRM Keys only affect drm dependant content such as PlayStation services and remote play, X-Reality, Some Xperia Apps such as Xperia Lounge VIP
there is nothing affected on custom roms because they dont use DRM content, only stock and stock based roms
Firstly,I am grateful for your help, but I couldnt tell exactly my problem. When I use custom rom,I cant use drm keys;so,drm related programs performance may down.My biggest fear is about camera performance.İn custom roms the quality of pictures taken with the camera are low owing to lack of Drm Keys. When Sony finishes update support,I turn to custom rom.İn custom roms I will encounter with poor camera quality, and this problem overwhelm me. I saw pictures taken with custom rom and stock rom and stock rom's picture quality is quite better. Camera performance is quite significant for me. I hope that I could tell my problem.

it honestly only affects stock ROM or stock based.
performance isn't affect at all, camera results are similar.
i mean i an able to create near DSLR results with no difference between Unlocked and Locked boot loader
I cant say how I became happy when I saw you said that similar picture quality between locked and unlocked.I wholeheartedly believe your words ,but I am bit confused.I saw same topic in this forum. They compared to stock and custom rom camera quality and likewise me they were worry about camera performance on custom roms because of lack of Drm Keys.Furthermore,Sony said that unlocking may down camera performance. However I rely on you. Thanks for your assistance

honnestly X-Reality Never worked for me, it may even be a placebo when i see little difference between UB and LB, there probably isnt any.
i use MultiRom to use Stock 4.4.4, CM11 and CM12 and i have to say Stock 4.4.4 has the best camera quality although CM11 and CM12 not being effected by DRM Content at all
idk why Sony doesnt try protecting their secretes with alternate methods.
I agree with you because according to me sony's method is absurd. When Sony finish update support,I turn to cm,and I will encounter with poor camera quality. This is absolutely quite bad.I found that unlocked's camera quality is quite bad in low light.Except for light low, locked's and unclocked's picture quality are nearly similar.İn addition, Brightness problem may occur in pictures.I learned this problem in unlocked.Thank you again I want to ask another question if you arent busy.I cant decide buy Z2 or Z3 Compact.Z3 Compact has 2 gb ram,so I am confused. Will 2gb ram be sufficient in next 3 years ? I want to use my new phone at least 3 years.Sorry for a great deal of question.

Z2 is cheaper and tougher
Z3 is more expencive and weaker but has a tiny tiny bit more battery, better display and not realy much difference in camera.
Thanks for your suggestions.Z3 Compact get a bit higher score in Antutu Z2.However,Ram is more significant for me,and maybe I will prefer Z2

my Z2 is faster than my freinds brand new Z3 but my benchmark score is far lower
you shouldent care about ram on Linux based OSs, android being Linux based.
Ram's importance arises from my currently phone.I have 512 mb ram phone and I encounter with hard situations;thus, Z2's 3 gb ram attracts me.Actually,I want to prefer Z3 Compact but ram is a problem for me.Except for battery, size and ram they are nearly same Could you use 20mp in Cyanogenmod ?

512MB thats a problem but upward of 1GB is none, hence dont care about ram
Anything the phone is capable of can be used in non stockbased custom roms
-In short, yes 20MP can be used in CM Roms
Z2 and Z3 both have 3Gb
Z2 compact has 2GB but its literely enough anways
There is no Z2 Compact,I think you want to say Z3 Compactİn the next 1,2 years,Big Hd Games will need to more ram ,and maybe 2 gb ram will be insufficient. You said that I get same picture quality both locked and unlocked.Do you use Cyanogenmod Camera in Cm or any camera app?

Games im not too sure about games
Currently the best graphis games only hit 200-300MB used ram
Finally, you said that both stock's and cyanogenmod's camera performances are similar.İt doesnt matter too much.Am I right?

Where is androplus kernel?

Anyone use it still? I only find links that aren't here on XDA. What's the benefit?

DRM fix is updated with it. Along side battery issue fixes.
Androplus kernel seems very slightly degraded the camera quality, photo a bit softer or just tuned the stock sharpness level lower. It could be a pros and cons.

The sony camera driver is a mass and since your kernel is heavily tuned so it could be a side effect. The last time I tried your v31 when I compared it with stock kernel, I found the image very slightly softed but it is very hard to notice so should be safe for most people. Recalled my memory, I remember there was a couple of guys on Z5 board who mentioned the same result.
However, the default sharpness is a bit over and some might actually prefer a bit softer in my opinions so it is not real a problem.
Keep your hard work up, thanks for supporting Z5c and starting to support X Performance. :good:
V33 = Great kernel

First time Sony user

Hey, i got a sweet deal for brand new Z5 compact, and bought it for a family member (previous phone galaxy s4 mini)
Compact size (and good reviews) were deciding factors
I'm a long time nexus user and don't know anything about Xperia in general, apart from reviews for Z5..
Can you help me with a bit of tl;dr what should i expect from software in general, and Z5 model? quirks, problems, something i should watch out for or modify?
I'm not gonna root/rom if not necessary, want a stock stable android and maybe cosmetic changes with a good launcher or similar
any help appreciated
Overheating, bad camera image quality, battery drain, lagging due to old CPU, 2G ram and aggressive throttling..
My advice would be get newer model instead like X Compact or XZ1 Compact if you have higher budget.
I'm a old Nexus 4 user too. I bought my Z5c when my Nexus 4's screen become unusable after it was dropped. I've installed official Lineage OS on my Z5c. I'm not a heavy phone user but occasionally in the day i look up reddit use firefox to read/search something and listen music when I'm using subway and of course use Whatsapp to communicate with my friends. I don't use Facebook on my phone. Installing Lineage rooting via Magisk and installing Brevent app for increasing battery life made phone my favorite. It endures my daily use for 2 days without charging sometimes it may go 2 and 1/2. The features of stock rom like Bravia engine were not interesting for me and considering the bloatware included it's hard to call that they are worth it. I generally don't use my phone as camera but sometimes take quick photos of the landscapes with scenic views. Camera quality is enough for me. I'm not taking 4K videos w/ my phone anyway. There is a feature of stock ROM that I miss though. The iOS like selection magnifier for text boxes was a killer feature of stock ROM. RAM usage dropped 200 MiB and responsiveness of the phone is significantly increased with LOS. It is a great phone overall.

It's gonna be very very lightweight usage, basic stuff only, so only thing that concerns me is that 'battery drain' after nougat update?
Is that issue fixed with some recent updates or still a problem?

Huh man, now i'm thinking of Lineage ^^ i know it's better os, but i used nexus because i didn't have time to constantly updating my roms and guessing will my camera work properly with new one etc.
If i decide to flash Lineage, can you tell me is it streamlined and documented properly for Z5 so i don't waste hours on research?
And also, is nougat battery drain still present? any major bugs in Lineage for Z5?
tnx for replies!
I'm running latest stock rooted. Having overheating and lags when browsing webs..
wipe calvik data cache...remove bloatware (spotify, moviecreator...) try again...after that the phone works as it should
100% use LineageOS. Performance and battery life life are phenomenal compare to the latest stock firmware.

I just tested to see how much battery drain will happen when phone is not in use, no sim card, connected to my wifi, with stamina turned off.
It's siting on my desk for 3 days, currently 45% battery left, thats not bad right? i'm sure that with sim card it will be more, but still..
If i go for LOS Can you tell me what version should i go for, for most stable performance? I see there is Stable Release Date: 2017-08-27..
tnx
