I'm looking at an installed Otterbox Defender, and I'm disturbed to see the plastic sheet is cut way too low on the screen, around the earpiece. The shape of the black plastic shell alone is sufficently large enough to clear the sensors/ffc/speaker. There was no need for them to die cut the screen too. This creates a literal pocket for dirt to collect against the screen. Is that how they all are? That's an unforgivable flaw.

Yes sir, the case was designed that way. Returned mine for that reason.

What a stunningly foolish design. All the had to do was glue $0.005 worth of thin fabric between the plastic (doesn't matter since the LCD isn't there) and that would protect the entire front, plus the speaker.
I'm thinking of getting some really light fabric, coating it with silicone, and pressing it in place. Shouldn't affect speaker quality, silicone is soft so no chance of glass damage, and it would essentially waterproof (to a degree of course) the entire front.
The commuter screen protector sucks too. It was flawless for the EVO, but doesn't fit the 3d right
It fits my screen just fine.
The only thing that doesn't fit is the top part of the silicone casing. Everything else is super.

Couldn't agree more. I see this as a huge design mistake.
I saw this too, but I really did not think much of it. I guess there is no such thing as a perfect case.
Sent in 3D using my EVO.
Put a full screen protector on it before case and its fine love mine no issues love it no dust issues.
That's the way the case was made no issues.

I returned it to Best Buy, and got the Platinum Series - 2-in-1 Covert Convertible Case for HTC (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Platinu...18353391762&skuId=2809635&st=evo 3d&cp=2&lp=3). I haven't decided if I'm keeping it yet though.
When I returned it, I feared getting a hard time since technically it was open (even there are no seals on the box) but as soon as I briefly showed the guy the top of the case, where it's cut too low, he was absolutely shocked and said "that looks like it was designed to collect grit and be suicide for your screen" and happily exchanged it.
And yeah, you can (and should I guess) use a screen protector too, but it's just so silly for a case that was designed to be the toughest, most rugged thing to have such a glaring vulnerability. I'd rather they addressed that, than put time and effort into putting a plug over something else. I'd rather get my 2D/3D switch dirty if it meant they would have focused more effort on the most important thing - the screen. And given how tightly and accurately the plastic case fits, why did they have to make the hole for the proximity/speaker/ffc so sloppy and loose? They could have cut that thing out with submilimeter accuracy, and it would have fit great, since there is no need for wobble-room/slop when that case otherwise fits so perfectly.
The Defender does feel very nice in hand though, very solid, and I loved the silicone they used. Had a wonderful feel, not the usual tacky silicone you see in "gel" cases or whatever you call them.

I checked the case ur talkin about out felt flimsy compared to the defender also less protection otter box defender takes the cake there. I didn't like the gay flap they had on the convert to cover the camera lens wait for ballistic to.come out with there case if your wanting a tank.

Yeah, I agree. But for me, the best case I ever had for my Evo4G was the Seidio Surface (or BB rebranded equivalent). My plan was to get an ultrarugged case for those days I'm working outside in the field (haha, literally) and the Surface for regular daily use. So that's why the Convert case sorta fits both bills. But I agree, for someone that needs extreme protection daily, the Convert isn't as good as others like the Defender.

Hope it works out for u man. Yeah, I quickly noticed the dust issue there too, but hey, compared to the bubbles that inevitably arise with stick-on screen protectors? I'll take it. I was able to get a swiffer cloth underneath the gap and managed to rid some of the dust that way. The only other option I might consider, if it becomes a real issue later on, is to poke a piece of a feather duster under the protector and gently swab it every so often. FYI- If you use the plastic clip while in your pocket (With the screen facing the backside of the clip), then it won't pick-up that much dust.
Other than the aforementioned, this case is everything I really ever wanted in a protective shell. I love the lens covers, screen protector, double layer of hard/soft protection, and how it fits the device like a glove. I think we can always find an issue with something if we look hard enough, but this thing rocks.

iLLumiShield - PET Film - Front & Back - $13.95
"...perfect fit. Almost too close so you have to be pretty precise putting it on. Front and back. I've also been using a pen with it and no scratches except when my pen had a metal burr on it."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
eBay "Explosion Proof" - 0.4mm Tempered Glass - Front - $10.95
"It feels nice when you put it on...I like the feel of it better than the normal screen. It was hard to install well for me but probably not as hard as I made it out to be. I had it perfect but removed it to get the thing from under it out and that is where things went wrong."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Armorz Stealth Extreme R - 0.4mm Tempered Glass - Front - $49.95
"...a bit on the pricey side but i love it."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Glass-M Premium - ???mm Tempered Glass - Front & Back (single pieces available) - $31.50
"I have Glass-M front+back for mine and I absolutely love it. (Removed factory ASF as well). My notes
* It is really smooth. Like freshly made toffee it is so smooth it feels faintly greasy (but it is not). On an almost completely flat table the phone will slowly slide across the surface by itself due to a slope you can't see (be careful)
* I believe touch sensitivity is improved. Finicky DPI sliders in Paranoid Android setups give me no trouble now - before jumping 239,243,241 when I really want 240 dpi exactly. Pencil also works perfectly as a stylus.
* I believe screen brightness and clarity are improved. Subjective and probably due to removal of the ASF (and its invisible tiny scratches)
* Extra glass makes the phone a bit thicker but also much stiffer and I liked this. I also have a Z1 and I miss how solid that phone felt in my hand. Ultra always felt a bit too flimsy (bendy). I also had to widen the slot on my DK30 (sandpaper glued to a flat stick aka big emory board)
* Getting alignment correct is tricky - glass-M slightly smaller than the phone screen edges. Mine went on crooked but I can live with that.
* No dust or bubbles in mine. Used the shower trick of old school film photographers. Long hot steamy shower will effectively clean the room of even tiny dust particles.
* Removing the ASF is a truly harrowing experience (see the other thread). Halfway through you *will* have an "Oh God what have I done" moment. Still totally worth it.
Hope my ramble helps someone. In summary really happy with the Glass-M."
Hey guys,
I'm getting to the point where I'm looking for a high quality, preferably tempered glass, screen protector. My ASF is getting more and more ****ed up day by day (I'm starting to see how bad it really is). I've done some research and found the screen protectors that appear early on in google's search results and through various XDA threads, but I'm curious what other people are using/have used.
I've decided to put this thread together so there can be a repository for screen protector information. This way people who want to protect their ZU from day 1 or those who are going to remove the ASF and cover the phone with something else can have a centralized place to get the information they need.
If you don't mind, please reply to this thread with information regarding the screen protector you are currently using or have used, what kind it is (PET, tempered glass, other), price, the link to purchase it, pictures (if possible), and what you thought of it/if you recommend it.
I'll update the thread (post 2) with the information as it comes in. Hopefully this can help everyone.

How can you tell if you would prefer to not have the ASF if you haven't removed it? Given the seemingly widespread issue of XZU breaking I'd be pretty leery of removing the ASF unless a very sturdy case was going on. I was tempted to try out a product from Armorz which I think was called Tech R(?) - it's 2 tempered glass pieces for back and front - but Iwasn't sure how much support this would give against twisting.
I'm intending to put on the Skinomi Techskin tonight before I go to bed as it's recommended to leave it for 5 hours or so to dry.

I know I'd prefer the ASF removed because of how it looks. It's beat up and scratched, and I've babied this thing. Plus, it's plastic. Glass > Plastic. It's not going to be any less sturdy without the ASF. It's not like a tiny 0.4 mm piece of plastic is going to provide any sturdiness. All it does is contain the glass fragments from flying anywhere if the screen were to break.Underneath the ASF is normal smartphone glass (don't know if it's Gorilla Glass or another brand).
Putting a tempered glass protector on it would definitely make it more sturdy. That's the point, it's tempered.

Atfolix is pretty decent quality. Just switched today.from.anti reflex to crystal clear. Anti reflex is nice when being outside in the sun, but it really weakens the quality of the screen,it looks quite blurry. And what is most annoying... Using pens and stuff on the anti reflex protector will basically lead to drawing on the screen protector.
Crystal clear is perfect.wouldn't notice it's there at all.
I've used atfolix on all of my phones and never had any problems. Very easy to apply, very scratch resistant.

So I put the Skinomi Techskin on. I have since removed it.
Impressions were thus: Applying the protector is simply a matter of misting the adhesive side of the film (liquid is supplied, I believe it's just water and surfactant), applying it to the device and waiting.
As far as optics goes I could not tell the difference between viewing the screen with it off or on the device after it had "cured" (Skinomi's word). Touching it felt like touching a layer of soft rubber that had a tiny bit of grip. I found it didn't impede me in any way but I prefer the feel of other screen protectors and of course no screen protector.
I had to remove it in any case as I got a speck of something underneath it that I couldn't remove but I think I would've removed it in any case due to the feel of it.

In about a month I'll come back and leave some details on the protector I just ordered off E-bay. Set me back $24, and goes by the name "Glass-M Curvy Border Tempered Glass Screen Protector".
I'm weary of E-bay and all it's anonymous vendors - but MIME/Ghost was out of stock and Bodyguardz doesn't have a glass protector for our device so E-bay it was!

Great choice - I think you'll be pleased with it!
There are some experiences with it and other protectors posted in these threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2571471
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2609371
Here's what I posted back in March:
I applied Glass-M screen protectors on both the front and back of my phone yesterday, and have been very happy with it so far. It's added a little weight, but it feels sturdier and more premium than before, and looks better than the plastic screen protector I had previously. The touch is also a lot smoother than the plastic one, which was a bit rubbery. I installed mine on top of the ASF, both front and back, since I didn't want the "harrowing" experience of removing it. I feel like it's protected well enough to do without a case, though I may get a slim one to cover the edges of the phone as well. Highly recommended. :good:

I haven't changed my mind, and also got a Muvit Bimat case, which has been a perfect combination. It still looks new.
First off, I have ZERO affiliation with this company - I paid full price for the case and waited 2 weeks for it to come from China (I had this case with my V20 and was happy they made it for the S8)
I have bought slim cases from Ringke, Spigen, Caseology for the S8 (all from Slickdeals $$$ off posts) and so far all of them felt a bit too slick and thick(compared to what I've experienced with other phones).
I don't know why more companies don't use the "Salient point" design (what this company calls the textured back)
Makes it extremely easy to hold the phone and a good feel in the hands.
Is it worth $10 when you have other slim case options out there for much less (with promotions)? Since I've experienced the feel of it previously I personally think it's worth it. I do wish they had US stock and didn't ahve to wait so long for it.
Now I will say this thing is THIN, like this is going to offer almost no protection from a drop thin (you get corner and back protection but that's about it). I didn't get it for that, I got it to help with holding the phone. Will a skin accomplish the same- probably and I've considered the Dbrand Dragon skin too.
I will say the case fits SNUG - I had a hard time getting it off to take some pics of it

http://www.ebay.com/itm/232311855985
the thinnest case would be ones made out of polypropylene. some of them get as thin as PAPER. others get thicker/harder plastic feel, but no real point as any drops will crack your glass...
I always buy TPU thermo polyurethane which is very resilient and i've been surprised a few times on how it protected my phones. the thinnest TPU i found are the CIMO
https://www.amazon.com/Galaxy-Cimo-...011&ie=UTF8&qid=1493474636&sr=8-5&keywords=s8
I have the Spigen which is too thick, back side measuring 1.4mm on my calipers
EasyAcc TPU which i'm rocking right now which is 1.3mm
Cimo which hasn't come in yet, but... I've had them for s6 and s7 and it only measures 1mm
I like to cut a small hole and mod the TPU cases so that it works on my modded magnetic charger.

I have this case. It's really nice. Fits well, and really is the thinnest possible case at just .025" thick. I must say it is a little slippery even after using it for a few days. I'll probably try and find a similar one that has a bit better grip, but I would certainly recommend it.
I'd also like to mention there is a small raised lip around the camera opening make the fingerprint reader easier to find while adding a little extra protection the camera.

Loving it so far. It is a bit slippery though, not like other TPU cases I have which provide more grip. The separation between the camera and fingerprint scanner is a nice touch too. I'm guessing it is made from some sort of TPU., it is soft and flexible but not silicone. Be aware this is very light protection. I just wanted something to prevent scratches caused by everyday use. I was going to go naked, but this is pretty close and gives some protection.
I'm loving the new spidgen neo hybrid case
Not sure what spidgen case(s) you've tried this far but I absolutely love the neo hybrid case...
Highly recommend this one...
Check this out: Spigen Neo Hybrid Galaxy S8 Case Herringbone with Flexible Inner Pr... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XP521V1/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_awdb_thRbzbWYMDS0A
For under 15bux hell, I bought 2 (different colors)!
Look, this case is meant to be a minimalist case so I'm not messaging any claims about what would happen if you dropped it face (screen) first onto gravel or an uneven surface but face first on a flat surface the screen is protected and any other basic drop on a corner, back or side I'm fairly certain it would be fine... I'm even able to charge on a Samsung qi wireless charger with the case on...
The textured back is perfect for holding it and gives the phone a nice secure fit to your hand...
I'd give it a 9/10 as it could use a little motmore stand out protection at top and bottom to better protect The screen - but that said, this case is soo thin you won't even notice it on your front jeans our slacks pocket... its seriously svelte...
I picked up spidgen's screen protector 2pk and it's just ok not a fan of The clarity but it's staying put without issue in this case and will have to do until zagg remedies their issues with Their tempered glass for the s8 which is virtually useless and not very case friendly... (if anyone has found a good tempered glass protector for the s8 please tag me or pm me -ty)

I also have the Nillkin PC Ultra thin case and have also found it to be to best compromise between offering decent protection and staying pretty slim. There also a tiny lip on the screen side so that it won't rest the glass on surfaces. Looking at it from the front, you can hardly tell that the case is on. The Nature TPU case by Nillkin is also very nice, but you can only get it from China at the moment.

Could you tell me how much it weighs? Amazon lists 1.4 ounces for both item and shipping weight. That's way to heavy for me.

No Protection with this case. It clearly says in description only for scratch. If you want full protection I would suggest that you get this one from Samsung is very slim:

How is the grip

Does the olixar flexishield actually have something special for grip? They say it's a non slip coating but is it any different than regular tpu
I've been reading/watching many different reviews regarding tempered glass for OnePlus 5 here and in other websites.
Currently, it seems that there isn't a decent full-covered tempered glass .
Should I just order Otterbox Achiever and just retain the stock screen protector that OnePlus 5 comes with until a decent full-covered tempered glass comes out? I know that case and screen protector protect different parts of the phone but I don't want my future phone to be defenseless.
I'm willing to listen to your suggestions.
Thank you!
Tempered glass is great, rellay protected many of my phones. Currently I have a Orzly tempered glass on my Oneplus 5, I also bought an otterbox but it raises the glass. It sucks that one has to choose between otterbox protection and tempered glass protection.

I also want a tempered glass but the reviews on Orzly are bad. I've read that it's only good at the start but as hours or days pass by, dust will get under it or the glue will start to come off, etc. There were also reports of rainbow effect.
What's your experience?

I have some rainbow effect. The biggest problem is that it is not compatible with the otterbox. The otterbox raises the orzly tempered glass. Does anyone know of a tempered glass that works with otterbox? I guess some do but that is the kind which has black frames that cover some of the screen.

I think there's no otterbox-compatible full-cover tempered glass right now. That's why I'm thinking of dropping the idea of tempered glass for now and just buy otterbox.
I'll just change case when there's a good tempered glass.

I've gone the route of the Otterbox and the Nilkin TGP which isn't ideal as it's not a full screen protection (but is full adhesion with zero rainbow) BUT it covers the majority and the Otterbox will do the rest.

If it is alright, can you give us pictures of your OP5?
I have an Otterbox and temper glass. I watched a YouTube video comparing the temper glass with a lot of cases and validated that it fit. I feel as though his review was solid and honest and I've been happy with the combination and would recommend it.
However, I do see microdots in full sun exposure but it's not enough for me to complain about. It doesn't pick up finger prints or smears either. I do see from time to time an "oil spill" effect but it goes away after being out of my warm pocket for a few moments. Afterall, then adhesive is only around the edges so this oil effect is expected to me.
I put my protector on as straight as I could however, I could have done better (does come as a two pack) Thus, maybe once a week I do have to reseat the case because it does appear as though the case grabs on to the glass only by the volume rocker, which already is the most flimsy part of the case. Again, not a big deal for the added protection that I want and it rarely happens. Besides, you should be cleaning your case once a week anyways so there.
Hopefully that's helpful. Here's the YouTube link-
https://youtu.be/Ei4woZ7ZRJU
I like to note that the Spigen case supposedly works too however, I haven't broke down and bought one yet.
If anything, not to hijack, I wouldn't buy an Otterbox. It's too filmsy around the volume rocker. It needs a harder TPU shell.
Cheers

Sadly only other photo taking device I have is my PS Vita so quality isn't great but you can clearly see the edges etc, fortunately the protection of the Otterbox gives about a 2mm lip as well so likelyhood of hitting the unprotected parts is slim.

No worries. The pictures are still clear.
Hmmm. I'm a heavy watcher of anime in phones when I'm traveling by bus or train so I guess, I'm gonna pass with Nillkin.
Thank you very much!

Yeah understandable, it's annoying that there seems to be no perfect solution to this, I've heard the RhinoShield Crash Guard is a possible assuming you also put a skin on the back to protect that.
I'm happy with the solution I have as I feel it gives the best possible protection right now, although appreciate it's not ideal for media consumption. Good luck in finding what suits you best :good:

Yes, I agree. It's kind of disappointing that it's been months since the release of OP5 and there are still no decent tgsp.
So I've tried in excess of 10 cases for my S8. The fact that I bought them on Amazon made the process long and tedious. I've tried 4 from Spigen and several no name brands. The latest one I've tried is the official sillicone case. It's great but too sticky and any dust or lint sticks to it solidly.
When I had an S7 I had a case I absolutely loved, this one:
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0...ge_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1&tag=androidcent08-20
Unfortunately, they don't make it for the S8 (yet they do for the Note 8 which is frustrating).
Anyhow, does anyone which case can be the equivalent of the one above? I want a hard-ish case, with at least the bottom uncovered but ideally the buttons as well, rubberized back and dark if not black. That's it.
Thanks!

Oh that does look like a good one. Have you used it? If that point design is not rubbery but rather plastic it's going to be annoying to hold. Plus that lack of a slight lip on front worries me.

I use that one. It's got a rubber coating to it. Slim cases like that aren't meant for protection. No lip doesn't bother me as I have a glass protector.
