Otterbox Defender screen cut wrong? - HTC EVO 3D

I'm looking at an installed Otterbox Defender, and I'm disturbed to see the plastic sheet is cut way too low on the screen, around the earpiece. The shape of the black plastic shell alone is sufficently large enough to clear the sensors/ffc/speaker. There was no need for them to die cut the screen too. This creates a literal pocket for dirt to collect against the screen. Is that how they all are? That's an unforgivable flaw.

Yes sir, the case was designed that way. Returned mine for that reason.

What a stunningly foolish design. All the had to do was glue $0.005 worth of thin fabric between the plastic (doesn't matter since the LCD isn't there) and that would protect the entire front, plus the speaker.
I'm thinking of getting some really light fabric, coating it with silicone, and pressing it in place. Shouldn't affect speaker quality, silicone is soft so no chance of glass damage, and it would essentially waterproof (to a degree of course) the entire front.

The commuter screen protector sucks too. It was flawless for the EVO, but doesn't fit the 3d right

It fits my screen just fine.
The only thing that doesn't fit is the top part of the silicone casing. Everything else is super.

Couldn't agree more. I see this as a huge design mistake.

I saw this too, but I really did not think much of it. I guess there is no such thing as a perfect case.
Sent in 3D using my EVO.

Put a full screen protector on it before case and its fine love mine no issues love it no dust issues.

That's the way the case was made no issues.

I returned it to Best Buy, and got the Platinum Series - 2-in-1 Covert Convertible Case for HTC (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Platinu...18353391762&skuId=2809635&st=evo 3d&cp=2&lp=3). I haven't decided if I'm keeping it yet though.
When I returned it, I feared getting a hard time since technically it was open (even there are no seals on the box) but as soon as I briefly showed the guy the top of the case, where it's cut too low, he was absolutely shocked and said "that looks like it was designed to collect grit and be suicide for your screen" and happily exchanged it.
And yeah, you can (and should I guess) use a screen protector too, but it's just so silly for a case that was designed to be the toughest, most rugged thing to have such a glaring vulnerability. I'd rather they addressed that, than put time and effort into putting a plug over something else. I'd rather get my 2D/3D switch dirty if it meant they would have focused more effort on the most important thing - the screen. And given how tightly and accurately the plastic case fits, why did they have to make the hole for the proximity/speaker/ffc so sloppy and loose? They could have cut that thing out with submilimeter accuracy, and it would have fit great, since there is no need for wobble-room/slop when that case otherwise fits so perfectly.
The Defender does feel very nice in hand though, very solid, and I loved the silicone they used. Had a wonderful feel, not the usual tacky silicone you see in "gel" cases or whatever you call them.

I checked the case ur talkin about out felt flimsy compared to the defender also less protection otter box defender takes the cake there. I didn't like the gay flap they had on the convert to cover the camera lens wait for ballistic to.come out with there case if your wanting a tank.

Yeah, I agree. But for me, the best case I ever had for my Evo4G was the Seidio Surface (or BB rebranded equivalent). My plan was to get an ultrarugged case for those days I'm working outside in the field (haha, literally) and the Surface for regular daily use. So that's why the Convert case sorta fits both bills. But I agree, for someone that needs extreme protection daily, the Convert isn't as good as others like the Defender.

Hope it works out for u man. I liked the feel of the otter box more then the seidio convert re branded heard some bad things about how flimsy it was checked it out at best buy didn't really seem as sexy as defender . I think ballistic would be good just that thing is a freaking tank. hope u have good luck with finding a case man.

Yeah, I quickly noticed the dust issue there too, but hey, compared to the bubbles that inevitably arise with stick-on screen protectors? I'll take it. I was able to get a swiffer cloth underneath the gap and managed to rid some of the dust that way. The only other option I might consider, if it becomes a real issue later on, is to poke a piece of a feather duster under the protector and gently swab it every so often. FYI- If you use the plastic clip while in your pocket (With the screen facing the backside of the clip), then it won't pick-up that much dust.
Other than the aforementioned, this case is everything I really ever wanted in a protective shell. I love the lens covers, screen protector, double layer of hard/soft protection, and how it fits the device like a glove. I think we can always find an issue with something if we look hard enough, but this thing rocks.

[Q] How protected is your vibrant?

I personally love the feel of my vibrant without the silicon casing on but unfortunately, I have to go with it whenever I leave the house to protect it from knicks and knacks (plus I always seem to drop my phone...)
I have a screen protector (REALOOK) and a TPU case. I too like the way the phone feels and looks without a case but yea, it needs to be protected. My old G1 got bang up pretty bad by not using protection... LOL...
I've had my vibrant in a case since day one but still have scratches all over the body. I think the shiny plastic material is just scratch prone. If I had to do over I would have tried some of the clear body armor type product. Definitely love the bare feel, may just go without a case and hope replacement parts become available.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I have the stealthguards screen protector and battery cover protector. Both are mainly on there just for weight and grip and the front is also on to make my vibrant have a flush front.
Silicone = ****
polyurethane Is The Way To Go, Alot More Protective And A Better Fit For Your Phone
I rock mine naked. I had a hard clear case for my G1, but it really didn't do a whole lot of good and my screen didn't get scratched at all. The Vibrant has gorilla glass and you get a 2nd back cover out of the box so I decided to go without.
I've got a realook screen protector and the tmobile gel case.
My battery cover AND the faux metal bezel are pretty scratched up. Been in the case since day one, so I suspect the gel case scratches it. Go figure.
I honestly didn't like the bare feel. Too slippery and small, so now I have a rubber case in it. Fits like a glove and grips better while still sliding out of the pocket without sticking. And of course a screen protector. I kept one on my g1 since day one. Its beaten to hell, the lip part is cracked and the sdcard unmounts if you apply pressure but the screen is flawless lol

I use a Casemate Tough Case and have been using this style of case on all my phones for years. Usually Otterbox, but they took too long this time around so I gave the Casemate a try. I never drop my phone, but I have two kids under 5, so the cases are definitely tested from time to time. There are no better cases if you want real protection, IMO.

I've got the hard Body Glove case with the black rubberized back. I haven't tried any other cases because I really like this one. The phone just felt too fragile to me without a case, this gives it a little bulk and makes it feel a little more substantial.
No screen protector. I haven't seen the need for one. I'm not super careful with it either and will carry it in a pocket with keys and loose change pretty often. Been doing this for 2 months and no scratches on my screen. The screen is definitely pretty tough.
this is a $500 phone, and it's slippery. I drop **** all the time so i got the silicon case. it looks lumpy, but it's worth it.

Couldn't have said it better. I use the BG case, and love it -- the look, the kickstand, the added bulk. (The "naked" (ugh) phone is too thin to hold comfortably on a call; and others have said, it's slippery as hell.
I utilized the stealthguard front and back. So its practically naked.. but not naked

I'm amazed by the durability of the screen. I don't make it a habit of putting it in my pocket with anything inside, but when I have and cringed as I pulled it out expecting scratches, to my surprise no scratches.
As a rule, the harder the cover material, the more the shock will be transferred directly to the phone. The same for the sticker types which are more for protection against scratches.
I ended up buying a cover from tmo because the phone felt a little slippery by itself. Its made of silicone and think enough to absord some of the impact if it is dropped and us les likely to slip out of your hand.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using Tapatalk
I bought the tmo black silicone case. I really like it because it adds grip and gives the phone a more solid, quality feel. One thing I've noticed is if you take the back cover plate off too much...it gets loose and creaky. They really should have gone with the slide lock type.

Case-Mate Tough Case.. no screen protector here
I use a RealLook screen protector and one of these clear, hard cases:
http://www.buy.com/pr/product.aspx?sku=217139826
Super inexpensive (bought 2, 1 extra to have on-hand)! Been using clear hard cases like these since my MyTouch3G and I've dropped it (the MT3G) several times onto concrete without a single scratch or damage to the phone. The case took the brunt of the impact. Put a very small crack in it, but nothing else. Ended up replacing it anyway, but that was enough to make me buy them for the Vibrant now. I just don't get that sense of protection from a semi-thin silicone sleeve. Sort of like gluing a bunch of balloons to the exterior of your car and thinking it's going to protect you in a head-on collision. Just not buying it...

I have the Tough Case, just delivered today. It's similar in design to the Otterbox Commuter -- a thin silicone base layer covers the entire phone, while a hard plastic shell snaps around the back, sides and corners.
Pros: The fit is absolutely perfect. The silicone layer over the buttons is just the right thickness -- the power, volume and camera buttons are all covered, but their function is not impeded in the slightest. I was particularly delighted by how well the camera button works, no interference with function or sensitivity at all.
Around the front edge, the silicone layer rises a few millimeters above the screen, so you can comfortably place the phone face down without worrying about scratching the glass. Similarly, the camera lenses and flash are deeply recessed on the back, with perfectly sized openings around each (which, IMO, is how the lenses should've been on the phone itself). You can drag your phone across concrete with no worries, if that's the kind of thing you're into.
The hard plastic outer layer has a smooth matte coating that makes it feel more like silicone than hard plastic, giving it a very nice feel in the hand. It's also covered with a raised, textured pattern, making the phone very unlikely to slip out of your hand. By contrast, the Otterbox Commuter I briefly had on my Hero had a plastic outer shell that was slick and shiny, and the phone slipped out of my hand twice within the two days I left it on (which is why I used it only briefly).
Cons: My only real complaints are aesthetic. I really like the slim, refined look of this phone, and the grippy, textured, matte black surface of this case, while very protective and easy to hang on to, is a tad inelegant, giving the phone more of an industrial feel. It also adds a bit of bulk, which was immediately noticeable when I pocketed the phone with it on (although I will say it's positively svelte compared to some of the other cases I've seen pictured on this forum). The phone does also feel noticeably heavier with this case on.
In response to the OP, the case does have a couple of mysterious ports at the bottom. One lines up with the slot you use to pry the battery cover off, while a smaller one lines up with a tiny hole just to the left of the other (edit: duh! that's the mike, thanks minieod). I don't know why those are there, but they don't do any harm.
Overall, I'd say thumbs up. If you like the basic design of Otterbox cases but want something slimmer than the Defender and easier to hold than the Commuter, this is probably your best choice.
I have the casemate "barely there" case on my OG Evo. I have been using it since shortly after launch and it has been just the right amount of protection without adding a lot of bulk. I keep my phone in a pocket with nothing else so that case helps with day to day wear and more importantly it makes it so the camera glass doesn't touch the table when the phone is laying on its back.
I am thinking of picking up an Evo 3d for my girlfriend in order to replace her dying palm Pre but she is pretty rough on phones. She drops hers a lot and throws it in her purse with keys and change and stuff. The thought of getting her a "glass slab" style phone frightens me. I will probably pick up a barely-there case for the Evo 3d if I get it for her. It's weird that they don't list them on their site but that mobilecity site seems to have them in a few colors for $15. That's a good price IMO and my last one came with a free screen protector. Hopefully that will be enough to protect her phone.
I guess I can also cancel the insurance on my Evo and move it to her 3d if I get it since my account is due for upgrade and hers won't be for two years if i get her the 3d.

that "mysterious hole" on the left of the phone you'll want to remain uncovered --- unless you'd rather not talk to anyone ---- thats the microphone
other than that i totally agree with you on the case - i got it at the sprint store and i LOVE it
i had the TPU case from the user who posted on here earlier in june (forgot your username sorry!) and sold them on tpu-cases.com or something like that... it was 8 bucks shipped, and great quality for tpu
but i tried this on when i was waiting at the store picking up my moms evo3d for her bday gift.... and decided to get the case-mate tough, and give her my tpu one
the casemate tough is sleek....i dont agree with po96 on the "inelegant" , because its pretty similar to the style of the battery cover on the 3d....
i like it a lot, and it feels very solid and protected....
i used to use the otterbox commuter on my evo4g and loved it, but i really hated the new design for the 3d....

So sounds like you like it better than the Otterbox. I am currently using the Commuter and love the feel of it (didn't feel slippery to me, has a nice texture) but hate the gap at the top. I am getting a new silicone layer from Otterbox to see if that one fits better. I think I might order the Tough Case as well and compare the two. Overall would you say its thinner than the Commuter?
I wish I could find the Tough Case in stores to give it a test before purchasing. I hate having to buy online and pay return costs for shipping if I don't like it but I guess that's what I'll have to do.
*update* Just ordered a Tough Case. There is a 20% off code for their online store: CM06-SP20. The online store has free shipping to US addresses and didn't charge me tax, so $28 total for the tough case (originally $35). Not bad! If I don't like it I can just pay return shipping. I might just keep it for a backup.

I don't know anything about otterbox and haven't heard of it before. Is it a hard shell case that does something special? Seems a little pricy.

It's a hard case with a rubber skin around it. It's super durable. Highly recommended.

I picked up the Commuter with it today and its awesome! Fits perfect and doesn't add much bulk.

Do you guys find it to big? I've been looking at this or the Ballistic case but they both seem to make the phone in to a brick.
The Commuter seems like the perfect size to me. I'll take some picture in a bit so you can see.

Here are some pictures of it, and ones comparing it to my mom's Razr with a Case-mate case on it in my previous post.
I've commented on the otterbox defender series case before. I've got one on my Dinc. Yes the defender series will bulk it up, with the outer hardshell and clip but guess it depends on your lifestyle. I'm a mechanic so I need something that can withstand getting dropped or inadvertantly laid on, etc.
The defender is like a brick **** house, it just doesn't get any better protection wise. The nice thing about it, is if I take the phone all the way out to just it's core size without all the protection, and wipe it down, you wouldn't know this phone was not brand new, it's mint condition, thanks to the otterbox, and it has been dropped on the otterbox at least 5 times.
The commuter series would be a lot smaller profile if that's what you are looking for....
I'm glad to see OB has their act together on this and released a case for it, it actually took them a while to release one for the og Dinc..

I bought the Commuter, and the fit was horrible. The hard plastic outer shell didn't securely clamp to the soft rubber inner cover, and that inner cover did not fit the phone securely. The port covers didn't lay flat either. I bought an incipio silicrylic case and it fits much better.
Wow, I really like that Incipio case, holy cow. You have anything that can take pictures of it on the phone? Would really like to see some real world pics. How soft is the inside layer? Would it be ok sliding in and out of a pocket or would it "grab" or rip over time?
It doesn't look any different than from the website. Slides into and out of pockets just fine, and I don't think it will wear over time. The included screen protector is way better than the one OtterBox packages with their case, it covers the entire front glass panel.

I agree! I just got my Otterbox case in on Saturday and the fit is really bad. I have a hard time pushing the power and volume button, the rubber over top of the front camera does not lay flat, the bottom end below the soft keys does not hug the phone(kind of protrudes out), the screen protector does not cover the whole screen, and the headphones port cover does fit very well into the hard shell.
I'm very disappointed in this case and will try and return it.
I'm not a big fan of otterbox because it's too big for me. :silly: But, if I don't find that many cases, I might have to buy this one. haha
i just got me an otter box defender, and its awesome, fits perfect, it makes the phone.has it's own screen cover too.

boy they must have given you the wrong one, mine is nothing like you discribe
I haven't used an otterbox on the Inc4, but we've got a fleet of iPhones for our salesmen at work. Every single one is in an otterbox Defender series, and trust me when i say our salesmen are extremely hard on phones. These cases have probably saved us hundreds of dollars no question.
The point of my post however is if you get one that doesn't fit quite right though i would ask for a replacement. When i was setting up all the phones and putting them into there cases i did run into a few that just didn't sit right. Looked like a manufacturing defect to me, but i was able to get replacements. That might be the issue your running into.

Edit: The Defender series WILL absolutely bulk up the phone though, but if you need the protection you'll find none better. I have no exp with the Commuters personally, but from the pics the size looks good.

Naaa bud, I don't have the Inc4g yet, I've got my original Dinc sealed up in the defender series.
To the latest posters, as I mentioned in my post earlier as well, I have no experience with the commuter series OB but I did have two defender series OB's that cracked a small portion of the clip/case. I think it's a weak link in the design of the case and the snapping/unsnapping of the phone in/out of the case over time that caused this. But OB themselves, have been absolutely stellar to deal with, they looked up my purchase date, no questions, shipped out new cases to me each time.
I'd call em up tell em, and maybe they sent the wrong case, maybe you got a design flaw on yours, who knows but if some of the folks using the commuter case have posted awesome fit and look, that just don't jibe with what your reaction is to your case...
I went to radio shack to try out the otterbox commuter and the defender.
The commuter was unimpressive. The fit was loose even after much working of the acrylic over the silicone to have it get into the right place. The top part that hangs over the front facing camera is kind of flappy and I can see a lot of dust getting in there. The screen protector doesn't cover up under the loose area either. The bottom part of the case barely hangs on to the bottom of the phone, not tight at all.
The defender was completely opposite, the defender was a great fit. It felt sturdy, durable and overall just comfortable (if you like the additional bulk added). The screen protector was flush with the screen and responsive. Not nearly as nice feeling as a skinomi, but still nice.
I know this is an older post but........ I just got the defender series and it really doesn't bulk up the phone that much - frankly it is pretty small in you hand without a case. Even with this case on it still fits into the side pocket of a pair of carhartts. It is worth the money.

Review: OtterBox Commuter with Pictures

I love my Evo LTE, it is an awesome phone! When I bought it though I received the horrible news that TEP from Sprint had gone up as well as the Asurion Deductible. Normally I don't like cases because I like to keep my phone sleek but with this in mind I had to buy one. I opted for the OtterBox Commuter (I bought on Amazon for a little over $20 shipped). So I thought I'd hit you guys up with a review just in case anybody is on the fence about what case to get.
Overall:
I liked the tight fit, the good amount of protection without the bulk, and the fact that the kickstand is perfectly accesible and usable in both directions Plus it's relatively cheap. Check attached images. I had no problems with any of the cutouts for microphone or the back camera. Also the charging port and headphone jack coverings worked fairly well. They were a bit bothersome, mainly the headphone jack, depending on the size of the plug but overall they're pretty good.
Fit:
I must say this case has a TIGHT fit on my phone! It is not loose anywhere and the silicone is actually pretty tight on there unlike other two layer cases I've tried. It is tight enough that no dust has gotten underneath it to the case which I hate when cases do that! Also all the buttons are unaffected by the case and I like the feel they have with it on. Oh and the kickstand can still be used both ways, port up or down!
Size:
The case hasn't added much bulk at all. I still think this phone is pretty thin with the case on. I took a picture next to an Evo 3d with no case on just for size comparison and as you can see, this case adds little to no bulk.
Protection:
I feel my phone is pretty well protected. I already got past the 1st scary fall yesterday when I dropped it running down some stairs :/ but my phone was not harmed at all, neither was my case. Obviously it's not meant to be a hardcore heavy duty run over with a car case (as rumored with some Ballistics) but it's a good balance between protection and keep it thin.
Screen Protector:
I personally don't like screen protectors too much. It seems unnecessary for this phone with Gorilla Glass but it's still a nice gesture for it to be included. I installed it for demonstration purposes since many people with screen protectors had problems with proximity sensor. The protector included in the case had the cutout for the proximity sensor which was definitely a plus. I also noticed it's a pretty hard screen protector and feels almost like bare glass, but I still don't plan on keeping it for long lol
The Bad:
The only bad thing I've found so far is that the silicone is a little bit of a dust magnet. It hasn't gotten too serious to where it bothers me but it's just something to note.

This is what I hate about silicone. Also, it ends up making it difficult to pull out of your pocket because of how sticky/tacky it is. Thanks for the review.

Great review buddy. I get the lint all around the edge of the screen's silicone also. Anyone have any good cleaning tips for getting lint and dust off the silicone parts?

I dont normally like to put cases on phones either but this phone...i dont know I had the overwhelming urge to put a case on it. Now i was going to go wit ha normal regular hard shell case off of ebay for 5 bucks but..no.. not this time. I got the otterbox commuter aswell. Truth be told I was worried about the silicone not fitting perfectly but to my surprise it fits damn well. Plus the case feels good in the hand. I actually like how the phone feels with the case on. i did put the screen protector on because look at it this way. $600 phone with ''gorilla glass''..... youre really not going to do anything to protect it? Gorilla glass is scratch resistant not scratch proof. My opinion is youve gotta have a few screws loose if youre not going to put a screen protector on the phone.
over all great case, feels good, doesnt add bulk.
The defender however...makes the phone huge
I rocked my OG for two years with every rugged case u could think of and never worried about the phone. The last month I had the phone I had it naked as all of my cases were breaking on me. I loved how great the Evo felt naked and how easy it was to slip it into my pocket. Anywho, I ended up dropping it and shattering the screen. I bought the new Evo and slapped the Commuter on it before leaving BB. I thought the Defender was way too big for pocket use (I'm over the belt clip thing). It maintains the sleekness of the OG Evo, so, I love it! The included screen protector is pretty good too surprisingly. Not a single complaint from me!
Yeah I have actually kept this case on and been loving it. The case adds a really nice feel to my phone and I honestly like the look it gives my phone. I have yet to try the defender but when I do ill do a write up on it as well

I love the review. I'm actually about to switch from the defender to the commuter case. Getting tired of the extra bulk and the rubber on the defenders seem to tear rather quickly. I had the same tearing prob when I had a defender on my e3d. Had the e3d defender replaced twice. So again thanks for the review picking up a commuter case tomorrow.
Bought the same case as soon as I got my phone, beat case hands down still nice and thin the dust magnet I agree but its protective and not heavy ! It was cheap too off amazon. The port cover is clever

[Q] Extra Thin Case with a Lip or Wallet Phone Case?

I am looking for an either or, relatively thin case with credit card slot or just a thin case.
Smays Genuine Leather Holder [I like this a lot, CC holder and it looks protective enough. Q: Would this protect the phone if it falls and lands on it's corners?]
http://www.amazon.com/Smays-Genuine...1425680666&sr=8-2&keywords=ascend+mate+2+case
SOJITEK BPA Crystal Clear [Not so excited about the whole crystal clear. To me, this sounds like a dust magnet, but other than that, it sounds like it will protect it every well.]
http://www.amazon.com/Transparent-S...1425680844&sr=1-5&keywords=ascend+mate+2+case
My favorite case ever was this one for my last phone. Diztronic Matte Case

I've been using the Smays case since October. So far, it's done a good job of protecting the phone. It's been dropped numerous times. It was also in my pocket when when I tripped while running and fell. I don't know if it's ever landed on a corner, though.

Do you think if it feel on a corner of the phone that it would be protected? Thank you for the reply.

I have this case. I think it looks nice and doesn't make a big phone even bigger, but needless to say: function > form. Once I dropped my phone face-first onto the sidewalk. I picked my phone up and when I flipped it over to examine the screen, I found a few chips around the corners of the case and one small one on the plastic rim on the front that surrounds the screen.
I think that Smays one is your best bet, unless you'd like the Cyclops one.

I'm not going to try to predict that, but I think it's safe to say that the corners and ends are the least protected parts of the phone when using this case. The plastic cradle that holds the phone extends partially around the corners, so they are not entirely without protection. I can think of some scenarios in which the case might not prevent damage to the phone if it were dropped from a distance of, say, four feet (about 1.2 meters) onto a hard surface, but the phone would have to fall in a very specfic way: face down, with one of the corners making first impact.
I think in most situations, this case should provide adequate protection, but it is not perfect.
