What does Nougat Display size do exactly? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I am using Lineage OS and I see the display size setting. However I do not understand what it does exacty. I am on a highres display so it is hard to tell what the underlying scheme is. IS it just making elements bigger or is it actually changing the display resolution?

It's the same concept as changing DPI in older versions of android, but in nogut, it can be done without reboot.

Hi
Thanks for the reply however I still do not understand the process because I never used changing dpi with older versions. Is this changing the actual "resolution" of the screen" Or is it playing some tricks to make the elements look bigger on the screen.

Should be doing the latter

It reduces the size of everything in the screen which make you feel like you are using a bigger phone, but it's the same resolution

[Q] viewpad7 screen resolution

Hi all, and thanks for your work.
Does anybody know how to adjust screen resolution to avoid the stretched and distorted view? I looked around but can't seem to find a thread about it.
I suppose it's not just about changing the pixel density but the actual pixel ratio.
I find it really annoying that one cannot look at a straight circle on this thing.
thanks

Apparently nobody knows anything about this.
By the way, I fear that the pixel is not square at all, in this case, I can't imagine any solution.
Have you tried an app called LCD Density Changer, which of course is about density, but still you could try?

I've tried.
The Viewpad 7 has a stock density of 160 dpi - lower than 140 dpi is unreadable.
140 dpi gives some more space, but the resolution is stretched in it's width again.

LCD Density

Now that we've got root (yay!)
The LCD density seems rather low- I'm coming from a Dell Streak 5, and it seems the icons and fonts are quite a bit larger.
I can't fit as much on the Note's home screen as I could on my Streak's homescreen, despite being both larger and higher resolution.
Which density settings are "safe" to try with minimum risk of causing market issues?
Interesting, most people lower the density. I have no idea what it is on the note now but 240 and 320 are safe

Yeah, I know, it's odd.
My old Streak 5 would comfortably fit all the widgets I use and icons. The Note, however, despite having the same number of rows and columns defined, has overlap. Also, the BW clock skin I use has to be sized physically larger than it is on the Streak, otherwise it gets cut off. Fonts seem much larger, too.
Granted, it makes it easy to read, but I honestly expected MORE screen real estate- not less.
Note uses 320. I set mine to 240 and everything seems ok. The keyboard does still seem a bit large, but ok. Also the default browser is broken a bit as well as the phone app. Keypad is off and browser tab page is messed up along with address bar.

I've got mine at 280 now. Same dialer issue. Using Swype for input, so no issues there. I use Opera so the browser isn't an issue.
Haven't hit any market issues yet, but haven't tried downloading anything either.

320. Which I believe the largest common value supported by android.
thanks! I tried 240 and messed up the home screen.
Streak used a 160 setting, but it was only 800x480.

I'm going to just leave it at 320. I'd rather take the time to get used to it and have everything function properly.

Good idea.
Im sure all the apps that break with the different density can be fixed using spare parts or installing modified ones. [There are many modified ones in the int Note forum]

Screen Resolution

So I have flashed to the latest International version of ICS and of course now have the option of either standard or high resolution. I use Pocket Informant and noticed that in standard resolution it comes up like a phone but in high resolution it comes up like it should for a tablet. When I was running the stock T Mobile build it always came up in tablet mode. Just what are the differences between the two other than the obvious. Also is anybody using Nova launcher? I used it on my phone while playing with ICS with no problems but with the tablet it won't let me place any widgets. It just tells me that their isn't enough room on the screen.
Kirby
Can't say much in the way of "other then the obvious" but yes, I saw that with several apps and launchers. In standard it reacts more like a phone. Some apps I couldn't even install because the resolution wasn't supported. When I switch to high everything worked as expected, as on a tablet. Those apps I couldn't install before then installed just fine.
After switching I noticed a definitely change in speed, but either I've gotten used to it or it corrected itself after a bit.
So I take it that you are runniing in high res mode all of the time?

Yeah. Like it much better. Icons and thinks look a little blurry in standard. I just took two screen shots between the two, same launcher and background setup. Standard indeed just looks like a smaller screen scaled up... and blurred.
I like high but with apps that are not tablet specific you can run into the issue of teeny tiny text being difficult to read.
How do I turn on hi res mode?

There should be a zoom mode icon near the clock on the status bar that allows you to zoom the the app to full screen.
Also have you checked under Settings --> Display --> Font Sise and set it to Large or Huge?

Please set your DPI to default as well as make sure that the soft keys are visible. Soon we'll look at supporting multiple DPI settings for devices.
Any progress with alternative DPI settings on the Nexus 5? I'd love to run a lower DPI, say 421 or 381 for example.

Not yet, as it's an immense process to get all the widgets, icons and wallpaper to align correctly. Right now when Themer is installed it looks at what the device is called and chooses the appropriate themes. Throwing in custom DPI's makes this a bit more difficult, but the development should still be able to implement soon. :good:

I've run some of this themes installing first on stock DPI and custom softkey, then after set up the theme reverted to my pref DPI, no issue at all on my side
potential cause
A potential cause of that error may be the tweaks you've made to the navigation bar through gravity box.
My debug info, current screen dimensions, says 1822x1080, DPI=480
Custom ROM and disabling my navbar mod, still no clue

Hi, your N5 screen dimensions should be 1776x1080. This means that your navigation bar might have been adjusted.
So which DPI setting should be applied? I tried 440, 480 and stil the launcher says the resolution is not supported. Could you assist?

MIUI 7 Change DPI and the side effects?

Hi all,
I have found a way to change the dpi without root, just using adb and cmd and it worked like a charm...well, almost. There are a couple of UI glitches that appear when you reduce (or increase for that matter) the dpi.
Firstly, the icons on the home screen mess up, but that's not SUCH an issue as you can install another launcher or in my case, find an icon pack that doesn't show the mess up quite as much (my preferable choice because you see the icons set in different areas of the UI, such as the notifications shade and recents menu, settings, etc.)
Secondly, and the most annoying, is the crop function messes up in the weirdest way. Whether it be when changing wallpaper or trying to crop a picture in CamScanner, the image you choose appears zoomed in and there is no way to zoom out or even move the image around, only zoom in further.
Now, my question is, has anyone managed to find a suitable dpi that MIUI does not have a problem with, or are there some standard dpi's MIUI uses apart from 480? Or has anyone found a way around any of these issues (or any other issues they may have encountered when changing the dpi)? Last but not least, is there a custom version of MIUI out there, or a rom that has it's visuals (and camera app) but custom tailored to suit various dpi's and other modifications?
I really cannot live with the stock dpi of 480, it's like using a phone made for old people, waaaay too large EVERYTHING on a large screen, I want to see more on a large screen. But I also am not yet prepared to go off MIUI as I really like their UI, visually, and I know any other rom will lose a lot of camera quality amoungst some other things like battery life, etc.
Thanks guys in advance for any advice.

Original is 403dpi if I'm not mistaken. I set mine to 375 and it's absolutely perfect..
Default density is 480.
Code:

No, the original is 480, which is too large...where did you get the number 386 from? perhaps it is another one of their phone's stock DPI, which means MIUI might not warp on this DPI value? Will check it out, but any information you have, please let me know

Just to be sure - phone has to be in FASTBOOT mode to accept ADB commands from PC right?
used some of the suggested DPI's but...
so, thanks guys, used some of the suggested DPI values, 386 and 375, and mostly everything works fine....except still some small issues with the icons and the cropping. try and set a wallpaper for a whatsapp group for example, photo shows as zoomed in and cannot zoom out to choose a crop of the WHOLE image like I used to....have attached some screenshots of what happens to my icons....is this possibly because I am not rooted that the DPI value is not getting set in to the system correctly? Is anyone who is rooted facing the same issues or not?
might convince me to root, this is the first device i have managed to be happy without rooting lol

No, no need....as long as you have ADB drivers installed and you are launching the CMD from within the ADB folder, it will work. Oh and of course USB debugging enabled and the first time it tried to access the phone for ADB details, you will need to allow it to by hitting remember and ok on the phone

The original isn't near 386. I went down to 380 and everything it far smaller than a 6 dpi difference. I'd say stock is closer to 430 - 450
Yes man, you was right the original DPI is 440, the app textdroiderDPI was showing me an incorrect value of 386 (maybe a little bug...).
Setting it on 440 with LeDpiChanger gave me a full stock MIUI size
