So well know that MIUI has a decent camera app and it works really great. But as it's a closed source app,**it's not possible to port for AOSP/LOS.
Now my question is,**Is Snapdragon camera a better alternative for MIUI stock camera ?
Though enabling camera api2 on snapdragon camera gives FC. And I didn't found any long exposer or full manual control**on Snapdragon camera.
Actually I wanna run AOSP but again I need a good camera.
So what should I do now ?

Works for me on both camera api v1 and v2...
Im interested in the comparison between miui cam app and the above camera app
i see people complaining that no camera is better than stock camera.. but for me stock camera is quite bad? aosp or snapdragon camera from above work wayy better
I overall prefer MIUI camera. It has clean interface with balanced features without much of any cons. Everything works well.
But for normal pictures Snapdragon Camera is good enough, may be even a bit better than MIUI or may be not (never properly compared). It is more or less on par with MIUI. However, one think I noted is that Snapdragon Camera v3 apk that is found here in a XDA thread for snapdragon camera...has some trouble with macro focus.....generally it works fine...but it had trouble focusing certain objects like a decorative fake flower in my house. It doesn't always perform bad in macro focusing. But the Snapdragon Camera that is the stock cameras in lineage OS, RR, Slim Rom (IIRC), AOSP rom (IIRC), works perfectly in that area....no issue focusing. However that camera again have a bug which is that preview pictures appears in portrait. Not a big deal but a bit annoying. Also many 3rd party cameras I found to be working fine in general situations but pictures with flash was not totally fine. But you find more manual control and ways to capture better non-flash pictures using certain 3rd party cameras. Snapdragon Cameras worked fine with flash. In case of videos, I don't know which is better...I am not much of a video person...just need something decent and snapdragon videos looked decent. But I found that the audio recording in the videos recorded from Snapdragon Camera were a bit low. But the audio was distinctively better in Footej Camera...(It may be better in other 3rd party cameras too).
I couldn't get HDR to work as good as in MIUI camera (though I haven't really investigated much in that area).
Snapdragon Camera HDR works but pictures appears a bit too bright for my taste.
And camera 2 works fine for me with snapdragon and other 3rd party cameras.
Using latest developer and stable Miui rom, I can say that stock camera performs better.
Snapdragon camera is awesome, I'm talking of the 3.0 release, you can tweaks a lots of parameters, but most of them still in Miui rom and probably in AOSP do not work properly.
Try for example the auto HDR, does not work well.
I've made a comparative of the same picture taken by those two camera, and stock Miui is better.
It's not a big deal, but it's clearly visible.

Manual Camera gives FC for me. Changed several rom but the result is same.
Camera on LOS/AOSP is good enough but those has more compression than stock.
Again stock has much noise reduction. It helps in low light.

Setting picture quality to 100% is well on good lighting conditions. But in low light there's so many noise.
I think 90% quality is standard.

Hmm IIRC, Manual Camera worked for me in most of the roms I tried.
Note: I think only recent miui dev versions (I can only speak for the 7.3.3.0 Xiaomi.eu) and Lineage OS (March 28 and the April (1 or 4 don't remember...are the only versions I have tried so I can't speak for other versions) have camera2api enabled by default. And if I am not wrong the latest RR is in that group too. At the very least I am pretty sure manual camera worked on March 28 Lineage OS version. And in roms which didn't support camera 2 by default, I could edit the build props and apparently some camera 2 api features were enabled in some apps (like manual camera compatibility test was passed, footej camera started showing iso and exposure time all of which wasn't happening before editing the build props). If you are on Lineage OS I don't know why manual camera isn't working for you.
While I haven't made any side by side comparisons, from my testing it didn't seem that the snapdragon camera (the stock version in Lineage OS and RR) were much more noisy compared to miui camera, when noise reduction is on (which is on by default anyway). Only I found that miui camera can make less noisy pictures in low light using HHT (I don't remember a good equivalent to that in snapdragon camera) but that also kind of softened the image. Sometimes I feel that in fact snapdragon camera might be slightly noisy but also sharper and more detailed compared to miui in low light. ..but I can't guarantee anything and I doubt these can be some form of placebo. Also if I am not wrong the stock snapdragon camera in LOS, RR lacked manual ISO, shutter speed control. While those options are available in other 3rd part cameras, all of them had problem with some macro focusing and flash again so I had to keep a lot of camera apps for different situations.

Thanks for such a reply.
Actually I tried almost all the popular ROM like LOS/RR/ASOP/AICP and Xiaomi.eu as well.
For my case Manual camera capabilities test is passed. Then I install Manual Camera and it works well. But when I press the shutter button it keeps Forced Stopping. Every single time in every single rom.
I even tried editing build.prop and the result is same. As a bonus I get front camera flipped as others.
For me Open Camera does the job well with all the controls and shooting RAW. The RAW isn't nearly good as compared to other camera api2 supported devices. Even after editing with Lightroom it doesn't look that much better as it should be.
So finally I gave up and trying to be happy with Stock Camera app.
I just wish Xiaomi will add camera api2 on MIUI9 as IMX298 is capable of it and many more.

I really have no idea why it's force closing for you. In OP you mentioned that even snap camera force closed on camera 2...that's strange too...especially when the newer Lineage OS roms supposedly have camera2 by default.
I still might have been mistaken in saying that manual camera worked for me, because I was trying lot of things in a short time....so I could have been confused about it...so just now, I again installed manual camera and took pictures with it.
Worked just fine. And right now I am in an 8.1.6.0 Xiaoum.eu (MM version not even the newer one. I enabled camera 2 by editing build props in this version i.e it wasn't even officially enabled yet still even in this rom manual camera worked).
Also, I just noticed your OP is old (13th March)...actually I got my MI 5 quite recently so I don't know but I think the camera 2 feature was being enabled in Lineage OS and RR recently (after 20th march or something, I am not sure.....in the Lineage OS thread, I think the dev mentioned about enabling camera 2 support around that time (I may be wrong about the time) and it's possible then Xiaomi enabled camera 2 by default only in recent developer (beta) roms.....so may be it had troubles in older ROMs, I don't know. Camera2api may still be not there in latest global (or china) stable...
Regardless I am still able to use manual camera in my MM Xiaomi.eu with edited build prop.
In the end I still just use the miui stock camera for now, not being any expert in camera department; I don't find much need for manual camera...I am more or less satisfied (improvements are always welcome, of course) with miui stock camera along with its auto HDR, HHT and manual controls. Never tested RAW though.
PS: For manual controls you may also try pro shot.

I have all most all the camera app.
Maybe I have a bad luck. Cus I was on RR on previous week.(latest version) Camera api2 was enabled and wroks fine with Open Camera and ProShot. The only problem is the Manual camera.( Probably to best handy camera.)
Used it on my Nexus 5 and it was amazing.
And Now I'm on MIUI 8.3 Beta (7.4.6) by xiaomi.eu
I update as soon as it appears. Always had the same problem. My variant is Mi5 3/64 White.
Anyway, Thanks for your replies.

Hey Guys!
I've tried my best searching the web and xda before making this thread but I really want some opinions here. I've been switching between MIUI and Simple&Clean. I've read stock TW Cam is better quality than MIUI and I felt that too when I was using MIUI.
Funny thing is though, the camera hardware remains the same doesn't it?
So my big question is, if I run MIUI (which supposedly has bad camera quality) and download a good camera app, say ZOOM FX, it should technically work as well as a stock rom's TW camera right? (since it's the same hardware)
Sorry if I'm confusing but I really find this problem weird!

MIUI still doesn't implement good drivers for correct video playback! hence, video stutters...normally 1080p video stutter...! and MIUI camera is also good!
You do mean the still Photo camera and not video right?
I see, but is it the same reason for camera photo quality? That the drivers aren't implemented properly too?
So if the drivers for the camera isn't as good, technically if I'm on MIUI Rom and install Camera Zoom Fx, the quality would still be bad right?

People, I also, go for 3rd party camera apps, they do work good!
Like lgcamera...but i don't really compare the miui camera with stock one! i suffer from placebos
Damn haha, you're exactly like me, I buy a third party app or get influenced by MIUI's camera and think it's not that bad.
Hopefully others can give a more accurate opinion

Try: Focus or Cyanogenmod camera app, they're pretty similar but I prefer CMcamera.
Open camera is the best by far.
i really like the stock camera. And bec of it i am coming back to stock rom from cm12.1, i really like cm12.1 Rom. i am sometime go for it but come back to stock rom because of camera. Will never happen. As source for this has never been released by Samsung. Has been this way for ALL custom ROMs since ever. The camera is the main reason I keep going back to stock. Focus is horrible on pretty much all custom ROMs. But because of major security flaws in stock OS I'll be switching back to CM.
Maybe auto focus is terrible but manual is damn good for macros. I used to make macros of smartphone motherboards, mostly after water damage to show clients that they phones wasn't stop working just by themselves. I can tell You on stock pictures from my phone was a lot worse than my coworker iPhone 5 and now they are a lot sharper and brighter than on his iPhone. I never tested outside photos on CM but I think it's only matter to feel manual focus.
Snap on CM11
Also using 12.1 on s4 mini, I've tried all cameras but have settled on Snap Camera HDR. Focuses fast and accurately, and doesn't lag. Also works well in lower light.
I just came back from CM 12.1 to CM11 in my S4 Mini Duos and switched to snap Camera HDR. Far better than built in CM11 camera app. The only thing I miss is the capturing with on/off button...
I use A Better Camera
Google Camera is pretty fast.
I've settled on A Better Camera (running on CM12.1) as I like layout etc., admittedly auto focus is not as good as CM app in some lighting conditions but a quick tap on the screen and it will focus perfectly.
Try the Ucamera application.
It is very good and it has many effects. It s available on play store
Google Camera is a pretty good choice.
It is not so simple. You can not have the same quality stock cam because any cam app is working with generic drivers in CMs or any other ROM CM based . For the same reason , the audio (mostly capture) also will never have the same quality.
It is a price to pay: Camera and audio quality worse.
Some apps can even do a good job, but difficult to achieve equal quality.
Until the other day I used CM13 and even liked, but needed quality to scan a document on an emergency. I had to restore Stock Backup. I lost the desire to again change the ROM and stayed in Stock. Unfortunately it is a reality.
Some apps can even do a good job, but difficult to achieve equal quality.
One consolation is to use some Xposed Modules and other tools that make Stock ROM ... Less outdated, I would say.

Hey guys, I just ordered the phone today and it'll be arriving in not more than a month or so.
I'm curious if Camera quality really is different depending on the ROM because of the libs, framework or IDK, enlighten me.
Question is in the title anyway, thank you!
Google camera HDR+ app on nougat roms. Pretty good HDR pics and great in low light.
someone took the app from google phones and made it usable with phones with snapdragon 820

Heyyo, eh camera quality is kinda subjective... For me? I do prefer Nougat ROMs with the modified google camera as mentioned before.
There is one downside to Nougat ROMs though and that's the camera flash... Sadly the way LeEco implemented the flash via I2C doesn't work well with current nougat ROMs thus it isn't perfectly synched with the camera. So for dark photos with flash? Marshmallow ROMs are still better in that condition. I rarely take photos with flash so I'm not too concerned but just gonna mention it so you know too

Here's a bunch of photos I took with the Google camera mod with HDR+ set to auto as it tends to work best on auto for a balanced shutter speed and quality.
https://goo.gl/photos/zsxYdUGLJGbkBRD28
So yeah, thus far Nougat with the modded google camera works darn good.
Here's the version of it I'm using
https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=745425885120756004
Like I mentioned previously the only downside to Nougat camera quality is flash synchronization. It's not perfect as LeEco uses I2C and thus far the community developers sadly have not been able to mimic it in custom Nougat ROMs... Sadly LeEco will probably never release the source code for it...
If flash synchronization is extremely important to you? That would be the only reason I'd stick with a Marshmallow ROM.

The EUI versions still have a much superior focus but GCam has a incredible better quality on night photos. I swap betwen EUI and RR Nougat from time to time to test new versions for GCam.

Do we have that on Official/Marshmallow based Custom ROMs? And do you have some apps that simulate [email protected] FPS?
AFAIK, no rom has 60 fps with 1080p, even the official MM roms.
In fact, I don't think you can record 60 fps in any resolution, even 720p and below. You do have slow-mo [email protected], looks a bit pixelated though.
P.S.: 4k and 1080p might have artefacts in official roms, noticed that when I got mine a week ago. It's a case of low video bitrate, if you bump up the bitrate (with 3rd party apps)- you can go all the way up to 100mb/s - there's no artefacts.

I did a quick test with open camera and I don't see any difference between 50mbs and 100mbs but I keep it on 60~70mbs to be safe

On the official MM roms, if you pointed the camera at the sky you could notice a lot of artefacts from the compression (low bitrate, around 20 mb/s). Bumping it up to 30 or 40 removed the artifacts
Hi
I purchased the LGV40 a month ago, and I'm looking to install gcam
Where can I find the best link on this website?
Is it compatible with the pixel 3 camera app?
I send me whats app mag i provide u gcam link
What?
I get an unintelligible and dodgy looking response that I think asks for my WhatsApp which also means phone number which is unnecessary
I'm getting pissed off now

Well second link didn't quite work for me gonna try the first
Edit: First Link for the win
Go with arnova's port. Seems to work best. Use the 6.1 version though as the 6.2 seems to be missing the option to switch from standard to wide cam (no tele option so far afaik). You will want to enable buffer fix and night sight 8.1 alternate mode to get rid of laggy viewfinder though. Ignore the load config thing as it doesn't work or just causes the app to fc.

edit: 6.1 version does switch to tele lens. use the long press switch option. Switch to tele by long pressing the gallery / thumb circle instead of the cam switch (which long press switches to wide). the cam switch changes colors - blue : standard, purple : wide, red : tele
Hello,
i'm very interested to buy the LG V40, but i need that at least one version of Gcam works well.
So, the Arnova's 6.1 works well on both cameras ( rear and front ) with HDR+ enabled ?
No lags or other problems ?
Gcam is better then stock Camera ?
Thanks to all !!

Yes, there are some quirks here n there but it generally works as it should. It does lag but the fixes in the app will sort those out. Alternatively you can use the cstark version. Also works but I find the arnova build switches lenses quicker.
Is it better? If you need to print them pix in humongous sizes, then yes. gCam has better detail retention than stock. If it's just for keeps and regular human sized prints, the LG one does the job fine. It's way faster and more responsive than a ported app. Only plus I can give the gCam over the LG one is NightSight. It's just simply better but also slower.

Thank you !
I've not found a Gcam Developer LG V40 owner, maybe a problem about solving lags, freezes and many other app problems .......
My wife use Gcam port on a Nokia 7 Plus ( Snapdragon 660 ), but is fast and stable.
I'd like to have a fast Gcam also on LG V40, i need a phone with wide angle camera and Microsd, and LG V40 seems perfect for me..... LG V30 has a good Gcam porting, but is older and with smallest camera sensors ...
What do you think about battery ? Is good enough to cover one day ?

I've using gCam ports for a while on multiple phones and now with the V40, I finally get the feeling that I don't need gCam that much anymore. With good light, the LG stock cam produces better pictures than a gCam port. They're better exposed and have more pleasing colors. Detail retention isn't a problem since I don't need to see every single Only reason it's still installed is for NighSight. Simply because the black magic google uses for it can't be beat.
Battery life isn't as good as the V30 but decent. Survives an entire day but with very little to spare at the end.

Hi Neocyke thanks for the reply
I'm not sure exactly which APK your referring to on the list (I'm assuming it's a 2019 one)
I'm in Peru ATM but live in Sydney, so I'm going to post lots of photo comparisons on here
Some in Iquitos and Cusco in Peru and also in Sydney
I'm going to compare 4 apps - the lgv30 with cstark pixel 2 gcam, LGV40 stock, and two other gcam mods for the LGV40
Again thanks for your help
Hi again Neocyke
I found another APK last month and it seems to be a really good one
LGN_MGC_6.1.021_Potter_v4F-san1ty-final.apk
Your a lot more knowledgeable than me on these things it would be good if you could look into it and try it out and give me your feedback back, I'd really appreciate that

Find the telegram channel by searching "LG v40 thinq" . There is an apk and config messaged there which works best for me (with stable nightshot etc.)
Has anybody tried installing 7.0.009 ports by Urnyx05 or Parrot043?

7.1.009, 7.2.011, and 7.2.014 are Android 10 only. 7.0.009 can be used both on Pie and Android 10.
I've been trying out different builds, running Havoc 3.0. I haven't had any luck on any 7.0-7.2 build at all. All crash on start.
6.1.021 version worked for me correctly . google playground and avengers stickers also working

Thank you for this info! This and learning to install the config file makes this an awesome port. EDIT: Is there a similar trick to choosing which front facing camera to use? I tried the same and it just changes it between front and back. Thanks!
As title, what currently works best please?

For some reason none of the gcam I've tested face retouching doesn't work,if anyone of a version that does please let me know.thanks

Latest one I guess
Used to be a heavy user of gcam on my 7 pro. Even involved in testing of urnyx and arrnovas versions and testing of the official xml configs. But I must say I have come to barely use gcam on the 8 pro. The difference in the stock camera is absolutely massive. Color is more accurate, no more smudgy details, awb is better, no more exaggerated contrasts in greens, better skin tones. Only thing I find is that you need to tap and decrese exposures when faces are involved indoors. It still wants to boost the brightness if it detects face, which gives a too high ISO indoors and it kills details like hair etc. Guess it's preference, but I rather have some minor noise than no details.
I have some truly fantastic shots indoors of my kids in motion. Ofc you need to set shutter speed as with any camera if you dont want motion blur. But shutter lag is non existent.
Any Configs for the OP8Pro available yet?

Why do you really need to install a different camera? I mean I have one and I've used it once in the past 2 months. The reason being is the OnePlus 8 Pro camera takes phenomenal photos if you just know how to use it. For instance these pictures I'm posting below we're taking with the OnePlus 8 Pro original camera
Wanting a lesser camera would be like wanting to replace the 108 megapixel Samsung camera for a Gcam that cannot utilize 108 megapixels
@dgunn, nice photos!
for me, I installed GCam just to have a play around and see what the fuss is about. Have really used either much lately due to the whole #stayhomestaysafe situation with covid though
Gcam portrait and night mode is superior!
Skickat från min IN2023 via Tapatalk
Stock OP camera app is phenomenal already, but I do think GCam is slightly better. Contrast and white balance is a bit better, colors are more true to life, night mode is way better (not that OP has a bad night mode), HDR is better, selfie camera is night and day better, sharpness is pretty much the same. Unfortunately I'm not aware of a way to enable 48mp shots, but honestly the 12mp photos you get are more than good enough.
With a magisk mod made for the 7 Pro, you can enable all 4 cameras to be used on the 8 Pro with GCam.
TL;DR: OP camera is great, but GCam is better. Most probably won't even notice much of a difference.
I'm very happy with OOS stock camera!
To me only the selfie is better in gcam. For the rest i prefer stock
Enviado desde mi IN2023 mediante Tapatalk
Stock does a better job for me.
@CosMiiK how to Install that Magisk Mod? Is root needed for that?
is there an advantage for rooted users with gcam? Or is there no difference whether you're rooted or not?
@ArtVandelay2 looks like all lenses are useable with that Mod/root.
Can someone see if there stock camera zoom (3x zoom) has some issues?
Can you go into there Camera app and turn off Ultrashot HDR and Smart Content Detection and take a picture in 3x zoom mode and see if the image it comes out is normal to you or the same as what the viewfinder showed? Every photo I take it seems to overbrighten or the contrast is turned super high (even though the viewfinder looks fine).
It be nice if someone could help, i've been asking for the past 3 days ...
EDIT: FOUND THE FIX, seems to be EX kernel problem.

Seems to be a issue with all custom kernel even though theyve made no changes. Only way to fix it is by going to stock kernel.
