Hi,
Recently I have bought a Dell Venue 8 7840 and instantly it received Android Lollipop OTA update. I must say this is a great hardware. However it would be great to have Android 7.1 Nougat backed up the tablet.
I have Googled about Android 7.1 Nougat on Dell Venue 8 7840, but all the results I have received seems not legit (sorry), and it is also very unfortunate that XDA geeks have not talked much about this.
Can anyone kindly guide me if you have any (legit) information on this?
There is not updates to venue 7840, except lollipop... From dell, they say the tablet get no more updates and from comunity i think there isn't so much support. There is a way to get root, flash stock rom and xposed. Im dispose to help, support and donate to a project than gets mashmallow or nougat to this great tablet. I dont know if this is a good idea or just have to enjoy a outdated tablet.
Few blogs are saying that there was an update from Android Developers channel. Many blogs are even out there talking about it. But I do not trust any of them as I only trust XDA guys.
I still have mine and I still enjoy using it, but I would love to have root and Nougat on this. I just spent about a half hour or so looking for a reliable way to root and install something, anything with Nougat on it, but have found nothing. If anyone else finds something - please share!

There is no way to install Nougat, not even MM. Intel never released drivers that support Android 6/7 and Dell dropped the support for all tablets. Notice that Android DOES NOT come with Intel drivers pre-installed, meaning even if you managed to get it on there it just wouldnt boot. The device will remain the way it is right now. It´s a shame but it´s a fact.
Well crap Thanks for clarifying that. I usually lust after updates for all my gadgets. Gotta see if I can live with a tablet I enjoy on an older system or start looking around for something comparable
Blessings & Peace,
Hugo

Let's root this sucker!
I believe that it can be rooted with z4root or universal one click root. Don't have the phone yet, but planning to get one from a local carrier here
Yes mine was rooted with z4root.

Should I get it?
I might get this phone, if I root it are there ROMs that I can put on it?
Well now we have a complete dedicated IDEOS thread here so ROMs and mods will follow in due course of time. I don't thing there are any custom roms available for this handset until now, but I am hopeful that things might change soon.
Z4root worked like a charm here.

Bounty for ROM
Sorry for the cross post, but we have a Bounty out right now for a Custom ROM for the S7 at www.androidtablets.net. I believe we are currently up to $170 for a 2.2 ROM.

That's great news! I have just 3 days to return mine. If I don't get a "custom rom" that works or and official update to 2.2 on the S7 I am taking it back. This is BS that the company won't officially announce whether they are going to release 2.2 on the current device or not.
Ok so I've been wondering for a long time now, how exactly does one root. I mean i know HOW to root with z4 or nandroid. (I'm typing this on my rooted ideos s7). Ive rooted a droid incredible, a droid 1 (twice) a droid x, i just rooted my friends droid 2. But all it is is just downloading this zip installing that apk, i am glad it is easy enough t o do, i am just wondering if anyone could Point me in the right direction where i could find a more indepth explination.
I have never taken a computer class in my life. Everything i have ever learned about programing i taught myself, in light of this I want to try and cook up a rom myself. Also winning challenges sounds fun too. i know i am little more than script kiddie level, but if anyone is kind enough to point me in the right direction, hopefully I can figure out how to customize a rom for this tablet. Thanks. p. S. I say never rely on the manufacture to "give" you any updates, if we want them and i say we do, then we should all work together and pool our resources/info to get the job done. DYI all the way.
generally a rooting program exploits a security hole in the software/hardware to inject code and give itself root access, and it is then allowed to install busybox and superuser programs, thats pretty much it.
Huawei Ideos S7 will NOT be creating an update to Android 2.2 update for the device.
This is my post that I am re-posting on from
Site: Androidtablet .com
Thread: Android 2.2 update for Huawei - Ideos 7" Tablet S7
From JackJack:
I emailed this to them on their website:
I have recently bought an Huawei Ideos S7 with the promise that Android 2.2 will be available for this product VERY SOON. I also bought several of these as presents for friends and family. In addition I reviewed this product on my blog and other "tech sites". I gave it a VERY HIGH RATING, BUT depending on the 2.2 release I was promised at Best Buy here in the US.
I NEED to know if and when Android 2.2 will be available for this device or I will be returning them all by Friday. I will also write about this on my blog and other "tech" sites and tell everyone to NOT BUY an Huawei Ideos S7. I will tell them this product is TERRIBLE without Android 2.2. It is SEVERELY handicapped by 2.1.
PLEASE REPLY ASAP or I will act soon.

3. Everything on 2.2 version R&D is OK now.

JackJack, I am not sure who your sources are but here is what I have found out:
I emailed Huawei on their website and told/asked them this:
"I have recently bought an Huawei Ideos S7 with the promise that Android 2.2 will be available for this product VERY SOON. I also bought several of these as presents for friends and family. They responded to me today from the email:
[email protected]
This was the header of the email:
华为终端部门对您反馈的信息给予回复
They then said:
"Dear Sir/ Madam
thank you for your appreciation to our S7,we do not have plan for Andriod 2.2 at present , you could visit our website ,the latest news concerning Andriod-based device would be posed the first time at here."
Thanks
So this is pretty much proof in my mind that Huawei Ideos is working on the replacement for the S7 that will contain 2.2 or 2.3.
I AM SUPER PISSED OFF ABOUT THIS!
Can someone "on the inside" give us a definitive answer on this? I was promised an upgrade to 2.2 at purchase time at Best Buy, So if Huawei does not fix this ASAP I will no longer be their customer.
This topic should be the 1St sticky on this board about the Ideos S7 because there should be a warming to people thinking about buying it. With out 2.2 it is can barley hold 20 apps. That is pretty God damn bad.
I am begging for "at least" a ROM for that device running on 2.2 But I would MUCH rather the company released an "official" version.
PLEASE! Keep me posted on this I have until Monday to Return it
-Ben
I am desperately waiting for a working ROM or the "official" update!
Why the threatening tone?

This sounds like a standard, non-committal canned response; I wouldn’t consider it “proof”. Huawei is a very large company and it is not surprising the person answering web inquiries would not know the latest developments until they are actually pushed out. And even then...

Yes the seemingly unused internal 8GB is a bummer but I think the S7 is pretty damn capable as is and for the money hard to beat. Would 2.2 make it better? Of course but TERRIBLE without? Not in my opinion. Regardless of whether Huawei pushes out 2.2 or not it will be available through the community.

Huawei is basically saying "you're on your own" to anyone who received a device as a devloper. That's not a great position... It's a pretty solid slap in the face. My first thought as a developer is "ok, they are out, why would I bother". I'd cut more slack if the device was 18-24 months old but they are pushing this as their flagship currently and an alternative to the more expensive phablets on the market. Even Samsung provides "reasonable" support for "old" flagships better than this.
The crazy thing is the hardware should be more than able to keep up with 4.4/5.0. Unless they are jumping right to 5.0 this move makes 0 sense to me.
Modding. Mymind and xordos with my continual softbrick testing have managed to port a pretty much fully working TWRP onto my MT2-L05 device and I have uploaded a decrypted 4.4.2 rom for my Mate 2 in this forum, so why don't we collectively try and port it to your device, any help you need that are within my skillset I will happily provide....just a thought.. .... Does Huawei use a tool like RSD or Odin for system images or are devs stuck with manual disk images and the like via recovery?
Hmm, I was thinking about getting one of these, now I'm having doubts. If we only
get third party firmware, would I still be able to run software which will not run with root access ?
Have any of those developers who received the free phones mentioned their intentions?

Right now I'd hold off. Buy something else. The operating system on this phone is already a year old. Support for things like Android wear etc will be questionable in 6 months.
If Huawei doesn't update it's phones you should go with something else. Just my opinion.

I saw the blog post on my G+ feed earlier today. I'm not really shocked, but it still really feels like a kick in the teeth.
I'm not sure what kind of luck we'll have getting a custom KK/LP Rom running on this phone. Usually the manufacturer-provided ROM is used as a baseline for other modifications to be made. If we were to spin our own AOSP Rom, could we even find the drivers and kennel modules to make everything work?
Where do we go from here?

The kernel is up on one of the hosted Huawei sites. A quick once over at the BABBQ indicated it's a fairly vanilla Qualcomm 3.4 kernel with some Huawei bits sprinkled in. Shouldn't be much of an issue for 4.4. getting a 3.10 kernel up for 5.0 will be trickier and is a big question mark as 5.0 isn't officially released just yet. At the BABBQ we also discovered they didn't implement all of the modem modes in the ROM. Another developer told me they might take a closer look but gave no detail for timing.
I've been tinkering with adb backups, titanium and xposed lately and I'm not liking the stock ROM much. They omitted large chunks of the adb backup stuff rendering apps like Helium useless, the SD cards don't come through to the root context properly forcing you to enable a compatibility flag in SuperSU in order to make titanium work and apktool and other standard tools choke nicely on the system apks. I had to fall back to running the smali decompiler by hand to find the right hooks in SystemUI for a simple xposed hack.
Adding to the fun their version of Settings.apk is missing a number of standard features which you can only adjust via Tasker/SecureSettings or by hand behind the scenes. They also didn't implement encrypted storage in the vold storage stuff so you're screwed in an enterprise setting.
Based on what I've seen thus far a source based build is almost necessary if you want everything android has to offer. However, vetting a ROM to ensure various new functionality is 100% will be a pain.
Huawei left out a lot and the lack of 4.4 is a serious kick in the teeth.
Horrible
I just purchased this phone from amazon on July. I wouldn't mind the no update but I want to get a google watch in the next few months so I'm not very happy about this announcement. For some odd reason, Amazon is still letting me return this phone so I'm thinking of returning the phone. What is another phone that I can get at this price range?

You can use Huawei's Hi-Suite software to flash roms to phone from pc. You can also pack roms up into Huawei's update format and flash them in quick update mode from your phone's external sd card, or you can install via recovery.
I bought mine on September 29 (didn't get it until early October) through the gethuawei site. I wonder if I can return it... I'll find out when there livechat is live today, the 29th of October.
After just one minor OTA update they officially announce no additional updates for their only US device... That's a deal breaker for me.
Damn, I was just about to buy this phone. Does anyone know of any good alternatives in Canada?

Not surprised , saw this coming from the early start . Thing is , there is no alternative with these features / size at the 299$ price tag . There are phones like the ZTE nubia / moto g / Blu products / etc but they don't hold a candle to this phablet . On another note , I've customized my phone to the max and i don't need a major OS update . Just me , this phone runs perfectly for my use . Fine if they just push minor OS fixes via OTA . Developers can be our saviours ! Let's not forget this isn't really a flagship ! You're paying for the experience as created/intended at the time . Let's wait and see

China devices are the worst to learn on as there is no kernel source for the device and moat avoid these devices. So you will have to take it on yourself if you want something. Yes it is time consuming and will have a learning curve.
Just got the phone and love it..
You should be able to update Flyme by finding 'upgrade' in your app drawer, but even after the upgrade its just a bit better.
The most current version is 4.0.3i
Not a big fan of Flyme ,I find it very buggy.
Im hoping for a cm rom of some sort. Would love to see something like the version on the onePlus .
LTE works with Rogers and Bell in Canada..
I like the phone as well I have tried the button in the panel to upgrade click it says android settings com has stopped, tried turning it off and upgrading from zip with zip stored in root directory, got nothing. Tried 4.0.3A ,4.0.3i, 4.03U also and everytime it says corrupted. My firmware version is 4.0.2 U . Tried lots of different ways to try and get google services on it and nothing happens. SOme apps from the app store installed like facebook and evernote. So kinda of feeling a little silly about purchasing this phone because the price vs hardware was spectacular. But I cant get everything I want to use on it. Looking for maybe some trouble shooting from experienced users or reassurance that i didnt just make a retarded mistake purchasing a phone i wont ever be able to use an i should just wait until developer community tackles these problems. Though dont know if that will matter if I can never update the thing. I am using windows 8 could could that be causing issues with upgrading my phone over the wire? Or should I try a .bin file ?

I hate to say it but your gonna be out of luck. Developers dont touch these devices. They seldom follow the GPL or have unlocked bootloaders and as they are mainly sold in China which doesnt have agreements set up with google in alot of places it is really a pain to get google services running. We have a forum for it but it has been long dead.

Well ill definitely try returning it then go with something a little closer to home. The Hardware vs price sucked me into buying it . What is a good deal on a phone right now? XDA developers favorite phone ? easiest to learn best one to modify. In hindsight probably should have tried finding this forum first rather than after I put money down on a phone but live and learn.

(Hi everyone, this thread was originally posted in the ASUS subforum, but since that place is a ghost town and no one goes there, I thought I would repost it here. I didn't see anything in the rules about reposts, but if this is against the rules then I humbly apologize.)
Hello, I own an ASUS Z300M with Android 7 installed, and as ASUS hasn't updated it officially since 2017, I don't think there are going to be any new updates to this one. So, I was thinking about downloading Oreo somewhere and installing it on the tablet myself.
I know next to nothing about the technical side of android tablets, and not only do I not know how to go about finding an oreo rom and installing it on this Z300M, I don't even know if it's possible. *Is* it possible? I know that there are homebrew OSes like Lineage, but I really enjoy using the gmail app and the google play store, and I don't know if you can use that with lineage. So, I am holding out hope that I can possibly be able to install the official oreo on the tablet.
Thus far I have installed adb and used it (with cmd) to turn a micro sd card into an internal storage (I really hate that this asus tablet only came with 16gb storage, and a lot of that is filled with bloatware). That's pretty much it as far as my prowess goes. In other words I am pretty much as big of a newbie as it gets with this sort of thing. Is any of what I am wanting possible, and even more importantly, is any of it in the grasp of a novice like myself?
I know it has been teased a couple of times in the different ROM dev threads, but is anyone still working on an Android 10 ROM for this phone?
I don't want to sound entitled, i think it is simply amazing that you guys spend your free time keeping this 5 year old budget device alive, thank you very much! I think that this phone is still very capable of running the latest and greatest Android, and it would be amazing to see it do so!
If there are any technical issues with the phone making it difficult or even impossible to run Android 10 on it, i would love to know and if there is any place i could follow the development for this phone, it would be great to know too!
Last I heard, there was some dev work, but it's been awhile. I also heard that the partition structure can't be setup for 10. Using aosip, only the last two pie rom threads that haven't been closed.
