Issue with custom ROM accessing internal storage - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am new to custom roms. I am using a samsung galaxy s2 I9100 now running CM13 on Kernel 3.0.101-cm-g008e15d-dirtylysergic_acid. No sd card installed. replaced PIT (I9100_1.5GB-System_6GB-Data_512MB-Preload_by-the.gangster.pit) as stock was too small to install smallest Gapps.
Since installing the custom rom even before replacing the PIT the phones system seems to have lost access to internal storage. I can only sees local data when in recovery mode. When connecting phone to laptop, set usb to MTP. Can see phone in explorer but no sd card. Can provide screen shot if needed. After replacing PIT installing gapps and es file explorer. Open es and get popup at the bottom /sdcard is not found. After doing the rounds on forms several reinstalls, adb shell scripts still same issue. non of the fixes have been able to resolve the issue. I believe these issues are related and may be problem with permissions . I am also getting a messages unfortunately music has stopped, gallery has stopped, google service have stopped, whenever is try to access local data when launching an app.
If the above is confusing let me know and will try again or if any further information is required.

@Lost Mako
After you flashed the pit with Odin and flashed a recovery, in recovery did you format internal storage?
If you used cwm then you should format it as default, if TWRP then format it as the default file system set there as well, some file systems doesn't work with the phone or the PC.

Thanks for the reply, im using cwm, I did format /sdcard0(Internal storage) as default. Would I need to format the other partitions as well?

Yes, You should do that as well, after that see if the rom reads the internal storage, if not try another rom.

[Q] can't root, can't delete anything

I just bought a used vibrant... sadly it has a huge problem.
Problem consists of:
1.Can't remove previous user gmail account
2. Can't download apps from market
3. If an app is installed to external sd, it will install.
4. If anything is put on the phone (pictures, apps, music), it will be removed after the phone is restarted.
5. Capturing picture from camera, if the file put in internal memory, it can't be opened or sometimes error.
6. Receiving mp3 or mp4 file from bluetooth that put in internal memory, all files gonna error & can't be open.
7. can't root the phone because everything is WIPE while restarting the phone include the update.zip that placed in internal memory.
8. some old photos can't be delete from internal memory, once the phone is restart, those photos are appear again.
Attemps to fix include:
1.Formating internal and external sd
2.Wiping data in recovery
3.Flashing multiple roms in recovery
4.using odin with repartition checked
now i'm using JI6
anybody can help pleaseeee.
thank you
Wait, you used ODIN and the other account is still logged in? If that's the case then it doesn't sound like ODIN is working. ODIN if i'm not mistaken is basically re-writing everything from the ground up, bootloader, recovery, radio, kernel, rom. Can you give us a little more info such as what happens when you flash another rom, or after you use odin.
One other thing, you mentioned that you can't root the phone, yet you said that you have tried to install other roms. Are you sure you're doing everything properly? In ODIN does the console recognize your phone? Can you get into download mode?
Yeah, something in the OP is NOT correct.
OP, could you try the ALT METHOD in the NOOB GUIDE in my signature. It will take care of everything as I have used it many times as well as others. It will give you root, jk2 froyo and then you can flash on top of it.... no way in previous data should be stored.
Also, didnt see you listed a factoy reset which is in the settings options.
@Paging :
Of course Odin recognize my phone & I can get to download mode or recovery mode. I try using odin to flash the ROM to JI6. But everthing inside the internal memory is not wipe. Not much differences after flashing. But everytime I restart my phone, there is a pop-up message that said "sorry can't open maps....." or "sorry can't open amazone...." Those old photos that stored in internal memory is not wipe and the gmail account also not erased / remove.
As I said before, I don't know what should I do for rooting since the phone gonna wipe out all new file. When I put update.zip in the root, it's wipe when I restart my phone. So, how can I use this file in recovery mode ? When I choose "reinstall package"... it said :
E:can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(no such file or directory)
Installation aborted.
I tried using "one click root". It's useless either
What I've done so far is : I can flash the rom to JI6, JI2 and JK2 (all using Odin). Now I'm running in JI6. While flashing using odin, I don't tick the "re-partition" box. So far this this phone is working, but have much trouble as I mentioned above.
@s15274n :
in your noob guide, it said that :
I have already renamed the file update.zip so all that is required is moving this to your internal memory, NOT in a folder. You should use a file manager (or your PC) so that it appears like this:
sdcard/update.zip
1. Download the attached zip and rename to: update.zip
2. On your device, navigate to Settings > Applications > USB settings and select Mass storage
3. Plug your device into your computer, select mount USB from your device's pull-down window
4. Copy the update.zip to the INTERNAL SD memory (~14gb on this drive, not the one w/ Avatar if you've still got the 2gb SD card in)
5. Turn your phone off.
6. Hold down volume up and volume down while powering on the phone, this should get you to a recovery menu, you may have to try this a few times.
7. In Recovery menu select 'Reinstall Packages' (use vol_down then power to select)
when I connect the phone to PC, I can see the 13.6GB internal memory. I can see the folders : DCIM, data, amazonmp3, mobi_drm, slacker svox, Android and SD (external sd).
BUT I can't see sdcard/.
There is another SD folder which is hidden folder.
I already put update.zip file in the root directory, not inside of those folders. But it's wipe after the phone restart. So I try the frustating way, I copy update.zip file to root, and to all those folder include the hidden SD folder. It still not working. All those files wiped after my phone restart.
I haven't install any program / application inside my phone because it's gonna wipe after restart. I check my "sd card & phone storage", it said that
Phone storage:
Total space 13.18GB
Available space 13.15GB
Application Storage :
Available Space : 1.6GB
Is that normal ? Why the application storage is so small ?????
of couse I try the factory reset. I already unmount internal memory & format it.
But... those old photos & gmail account is still untouchable.
any idea how to fix this problem ?
How if I using "one click unroot" ? is it safe ?
please help me.
try doing a phone data reset
you will find that under settings > privacy > reset phone data
also, make sure you're micoSD is plugged in. 2 mintues ago i was having the same exact problems as you were having so i finally decided to give it a one last go before calling it a night. I plugged my microSD card in and re-attempted to root my phone and surprisingly that did the trick....it could be just a coincidence though
good luck!
Unfortunately the phone data reset did not solve the issue.
OK, after playing with the phone somemore, I found out that I can temporarily root my vibrant using the OCLF 2.3.0 - Z4Root app; I verified this by running the "su" command under terminal emulator. However once the phone is restarted, the su/root privilege is gone and I would have to install OCLF and run the Z4Root app again to gain root access. I don't think this is normal?
What's strange is that I can flash different ROMs using Odin without any issue, but I simply can't root the phone permanently. Does any one have any more idea I can try?

i had the same problem as you my friend.
every night im trying all i can to delete the undeleted files but no success..
i had the exact problem as you with my galaxy s.
please help us.
when i reboot all apps are force closing even my bluetooth cant turn on because
its force closing also.
OP,
I would:
- remove external SD card
- desktop > menu > settings > SD and phone storage > format phone storage.
- ODIN back to original stock, JDF. follow the ODIN instruction here.
This should put your phone back to the original stock. There should be none of the old system data, kernel, root or anything. Your SD card should also be clear of all old data, which could be preventing permanent rooting. From this point you should be able to root, install cwr and flash roms at will.
I don't think there is a way for data to survive a JDF odin nor an SD card format.

@jamir5:
so what did u use for your ROM ?
Now I'm back to JFD... everything is back like the factory reset, but those problems still remains. At least there are no pop-up error message anymore.
I don't know what should I do now ? even factory reset or repartition using odin still can't help us. hik...hikss.....
I'm start to thinking that it's a hardware problem.
same here flashed to stock rom force closures are gone bluetooth working again but still cant delete wipe or access the internal sd..tried every solution u could but no luck..

[Q] (Q) Weird issue with galaxy s internal sd memory

I had problems with my galaxy S, which was running on official 2.3.6
I decided to wipe everything clean and install a custom rom
But during the process, I've come across a weird weird problem
I started to get UIDs system error and was asking me to wipe data partition to use the phone
so I tried to wipe all the partitions
I have tried wiping int sd card via phone -> didn't work
I have tried wiping via cwm -> didn't work
I have tried wiping & re-partition via odin + reinstall -> didn't work
I have physically deleted contents from int sd while connected via USB -> didn't work
I have formatted the removable disk (int sd) while connected via USB -> didn't work
what I mean by didn't work is, the next time I reboot, I find that all the contents in my phone comes back alive...
I don't know what I can do to fix this problem
I can install new mods fine, but due to the fact that old system files and apps are present together, which didn't get wiped, and causes clashes and my phone won't work as it starts up... I really don't know how I can fix this problem and wipe my phone clean to "resurrect" it..
please help me if you know solution to this problem
This really sounds weired.....
You should download sd maid for root users (search for the paid version)
There you have many options for finding odd data on your sdcard and internal phone storage
you can delete files
sd maid makes you find some dead apps wich make your problems
give me a feedback if it works..or not
stay well

hey thanks for the suggestion, but at the moment, I can't use the phone at all because all my basics apps and system apps clashes on boot up, no matter what I flash on to my phone, hence basically it won't start up.. so I can't use any apps infact the phone itself
Only thing I can do is via CWM recovery mode, or via odin
If you know how to deal with this problem via that way, it will be great~

2.search for the *.ops file for ur I9000
3. look out for a flashing guid for ur phone ( you will find it here in the xda)

[CLOSED]Format data/media (sdcard internal memory)

I apologize if this has been answered somewhere else here before. I have been searching for days and have not found the full answers to my questions anywhere.
Recently I updated my GT-P7510 CM9 to an experimental CM10 from by pershoot. After getting it up and running I was looking at my internal storage usage and numbers didn't seem to add up (must have done a dirty flash at some point in the past to cause this). My internal storage in root explorer showed 8.93gb in use and 28.01 total storage. I copied everything to a USB drive to back it up and noticed there was only 7.45gb actually on the internal storage. I have seen this problem before on my S2, and I always just reformat the internal SD card (emmc) to regain the missing space. However, since the tab does not have a micro SD slot, I have no way of wiping the internal sdcard (data/media) without wiping out the rom too from how I understand it. Somebody correct me if I am wrong...
So, does anybody know of a way to successfully wipe/format the sdcard (data/media directory) in CWM or other method that will not wipe out the rom and send the device straight to cwm with no way to install a new rom? Or do I have to revert back to stock to accomplish the format of sdcard like I have read for a few other similar situations? Everything works fine (CM10 & CM9 both run awesome), I just want that extra 1.48gb of missing/phantom storage back. And, without mass storage mode, I cannot perform a disk check in win7. This has really got me frustrated to find a solution without having to start over. I wish this tab had a micro SD slot!
Currently I am running CM9 nightlies (7-31) for p4wifi (gt-p7510). My cwm recovery is version 6.0.1.0. Any help is greatly appreciated, and I do apologize if this has been covered before. Thanks in advance to those of you smarter than I.

Ok, I seemed to have figured this one out and now feel pretty stupid for not digging a bit further before asking.
After I decided to go ahead with the sdcard format using CWM, I noticed that the space was still being used somewhere. After I started to dig a bit, I noticed that all of my apps still worked after the format. Basically, the extra space is being consumed by the /data/app folder housing all user apps. CWM must be designed to ignore this directory when formatting the internal sdcard which is why there was still some storage being used.
I feel like an ubernoob for asking this, but my S2's internal sdcard is not mapped to data/media, so I had to learn a bit better about how this thing works I suppose. Anyways, I hope this information can be useful to someone out there having similar questions.

I can accomplish a full format of the internal sdcard on my galaxy s2 without it affecting the rom in any way whatsoever and it is running cwm 6.0.1.0 also. From how I understand it, the partitions are set up differently on the s2 and this device. The s2 has a separate partition for the internal sdcard making it possible to format via cwm. On this device, the sdcard is part of the data partition meaning wiping it will leave you with no rom installed and no storage on the sdcard. I think all versions of cwm can wipe the slate clean, it is just a matter of everything else being wiped clean also. But, if you are aware of a cwm that let's me accomplish this, I would love to find it. Thanks again.

[Q] E:Can't open /sdcard/CM10-v9.4.zip (bad) Installation aborted

Hello everyone,
I have been trying to put CM10 on my Xperia 10, unsuccessfully.
My phone is rooted, I have the newest CWM, bootloader unlocked.
I flashed the latest Kernel for CM10 (v21), wiped data/factory reset, wiped catche partition, wiped dalvik catche.
When installing the actual ROM I got this message:
E:Can't open /sdcard/CM10-v9.4.zip (bad) Installation aborted.
I redownloaded the ROM, also downloaded v9.3 rom, still same message (with the name change accordingly, of course).
I formatted my SD card and tried doing everything again: flashing and installing. Didn't help.
I've searched everywhere in this forum for the solution, and several people found it, but it differs from phone to phone it seems, and some of the things I tried didn't work. I found no solutions for X10 specifically.
Any ideas please?
That means the download is bad, you need to re-download the zip.

you have to use cm10.4 rom and 21version kernal.
try to download rom using phone browser like opera mobile.
I guess either your ROM is broken (redownload?) or you need to disable script verification in the recovery.

Thank you, it worked - I was able to install CM10 9.4. However another problem now is present - when I try to turn on my phone, it gets stuck at boot animation (the circle with tha name Cyanogen inside). I have found a post that it happened to someone else and after flashing the phone with kernel20 instead of 21, everything was ok. I did the same - still can't boot. What could I try now?
Solved it: I flashed it again with kernel 20 (used Firefox for downloading it) and it worked!
One weird thing: I got a window asking to enter SIM network unlock PIN, which looked kind of scary. But I pressed dismiss and my phone works and feels like an entirely new device, speed has increased and everything is wonderful.
Thank you everyone for your help

All will be fixed if you format your sd card with SDFORMATTER app.
solved: This problem is for bad sdhc
1-download sdformatter app
2-format option: Full (overwrite) format, format size adjustment on.
3-do not remove the drive during formatting
4-be patient and wait
5-copy the zip rom to the sd card
6-flash
7-enjoy

Download from that web site. Accept the "End User License Agreement" and download "sdformatter ver 4 for your computer not for your phone". Install it and follow the operation manual that you can download too only if you want.
You will need an adapter (for the micro sdhc) to mount it to your computer. And, don't forget: format option: Full (overwrite) format, format size adjustment on. For instance I have 8 giga sdhc and the format time delayed about 3 hours. That is why I said to have patience.
After the format and the respective FLASH, install all your apps one by one from google play store. Do not use titanium back up or similar app.
Needed: Phone bootloader unlocked and rooted.
SD Formatter 4.0 for SD/SDHC/SDXC
This software formats all SD memory cards, SDHC memory cards and SDXC memory cards. SD Formatter provides quick and easy access to the full capabilities of your SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards.
The SD Formatter was created specifically for memory cards using the SD/SDHC/SDXC standards. It is strongly recommended to use the SD Formatter instead of formatting utilities provided with operating systems that format various types of storage media. Using generic formatting utilities may result in less than optimal performance for your memory cards.
The SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards have a "Protected Area" on the card for the SD standard's security function. The SD Formatter does not format the "Protected Area". Please use appropriate application software or SD-compatible device that provides SD security function to format the "Protected Area" in the memory card.
I have read your aforementioned problem and I am for sure that it is due to a bad SDHC. You need to recover it. If sdformatter can not format (the sdcard) you have to buy a new sdhc.
Follow the FXP installation for the kernel and rom. All will be ok.
In the case that you do not follow the instructions, make a mistake or the third war world start for this recommendations, I ACCEPT NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY BRICKED UP DEVICES OR COMPUTERS! DO ALL THAT ON YOUR OWN RISK!

All will be fixed if you format your sd card with SDFORMATTER app.
solved: This problem is for bad sdhc
1-download sdformatter app
2-format option: Full (overwrite) format, format size adjustment on.
3-do not remove the drive during formatting
4-be patient and wait
5-copy the zip rom to the sd card
6-flash
7-enjoy

I have faced this problem the solution is to change your sd card or don't put the zip file on internal memory

[Q] device storage showing minus when trying to open gallery

My i9300 is nealy unusable. The first sign of trouble was a error message trying to open gallery on 4.1.2. I then flashed latest omegarom after wipeing everything didnt solve the problem just gives a better description.
"There is not enough space (-5371MB) in your device memory. Delete some files" In settings the internal storage has 5.36GB free. I have been trying out a few different roms over the last few days but have always full wiped.
Now a lot of my apps force close on launch. How can my internal storeage be showing to some apps as a minus but the system gets the correct free space. I did have a play around with ExtDs2InternalSd v5 but decided to to swap back.
Hope someone can help me..Thanx in advance..

Then this is your problem did you follow proper uninstall instructions for ExtDs2InternalSd v5 >> If you want to remove the mod with a file explorer with root ability, delete the file 11extsd2internalsd from etc/init.d folder <<
If that does not work you will need to flash new rom and full wipe..

Yes back up internal and external sd cards and format both..make sure you format any ext2 partitions on your external sd card with minitool partition wizard or equivalent formatting tool.
