Parental controls enabled on Modded AOSP ROM? - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Questions & Answers

L.S.
I have the Note 4 MTK version and flashed the Modded AOSP ROM after using the xiaomi.eu rom for a while. (it came shipped with a vendor rom I did not trust). I am very happy with the modded AOSP ROM as it fixes various issues I had with MIUI. Although it does seem that this rom doesn't only block adds (another thing I couldnt get up and running propper under MIUI) it also blocks access to "adult" websites.
I want controll on what i do and don't see (incl whitelisting pages for adds) but can't seem too find what is causing this. Can anyone using this ROM confirm/advise?
With kind regards,

install adaway and apply it. The websites are blocked via a hosts file that adaway changes. adaway doesnt block non-add sites.
Try it out.

[Q] xposed for Nubia?

I have a z7 mini. Tried the latest xposed version it gave me a resource error and the module I'm trying to use requires the resource api so workaround doesn't help. I installed an older version 2.5.1 and ended up boot looping. Anyone have a solution? Huawei users can disable theme in build prop to get around the issue but I didn't find any such line in my build file!
Gotta use cm or mokee I guess, the Nubia UI isn't made for xposed modules that change the UI, and thus only works partially with resource hooks disabled.

yeah thats what I thought. Its annoying though, the only module I want to use is the snapchat saver, it snot like it should really be affecting the system UI but it wont work without resources enabled. Just wish there was a way to stop the nubia UI form loading at boot just to see what its like.
If you disable the Nubia UI, there is no UI.
ZTE/Nubia modified the Android UI to their liking, its not that they added it to the default look and set it as default.
You can't switch between them rather then switching roms, moving to CM11/12.
There is a way to use it with the nubia roms. In TDBeta forum a guy ported a old version of xposed to nubia ui devices, go to the forums and try to find it. If you cant find it, just PM me and ill send it over to you

Hmm thatnks for that. I am not totally sure if he has really done what he says though. i suspect he may have just made the error message disappear. I still cannot use the module I want (snaprefs) because I am missing the bridge module. So I suspect this custom verison just has that stripped out so no error appears. i may be wrong though!
Right now im in CM12, but when i used the official rom the custom version of xposed worked like a charm. Its old though, but does what it says.

Honor 7 root advantages

Hi im currently using honor 7 PLK L01C185B380 without root access. I want to know since there is no custom rom like CM currently available for Honor 7, what advantages will i get from rooting my device?
Are there any good kernels available that i can use with the stock rom?

there is pretty decent cm 13 in dev thread ... actually i am using it and i am overall happy with it except some minor things.
for root:
there's so many things you can do with root, a few things important to me:
- root most likely also means you have custom twrp, with twrp you can completely backup your device to have a safe return to point
- better battery stats
- xposed with all its modules
- titanium backup to have individual app backups completely with all data
- freeze/disable/remove system apps
- cpu adjustments
- firewall
- proxy
- adaway
- tasker
xposed is one of best adventages of rooting. adblock, all cool mods etc...

I can use the custom kernel with any stock rom version?
B370, B380 etc
i used the digigoon kernel with b380... there hasn't been any major change from b330 onwards, so i assume b330 to 380 is safe. however it's always good to get a backup before flashing kernels.

Did you root using the XDA guide?
I just hate the fact that my data will be lost after unlocking the bootloader, that's the only thing that's stopping me
rooted like this:
- download newest super su zip file
- transfer to sd
- reboot to twrp
- install from zip
- select super su zip
- install
- no wipe
- done
( you can also look at digigoons pure emui rom which has aroma installer, where you can have several options with the best mods available for emui on honor 7 )

Yeah but you had to unlock the bootloader right?
For me most advantages about rooting/twrp are:
-Installing BusyBox
-Viper4Android (you'll need 3rd part music app to hear the changes, stock have DTS sound)
-Changing Calendar dates to my language like Ataasinngorneq (Monday) (Greenlandic is not an option in language settings)
-Xposed to use Softkeys Fade mod, double tap notification to turn off screen (after installing Xposed, booting takes time, be patient, took little over 5 mins)
-Installing Kernel Adiutor
I'm using stock PLK-L01 B370.
I always do it in that order.
Root access has become a must for all my devices
Here's my use/advantages of root access:
-First of all, I use Greenify that has the functionality of close every app in the background, even system apps. This with root access, Greenify can works in background while I'm doing something else with the phone. With this app, my battery last longer.
-I use custom recovery, witch allow me to flash mods that requires root. I use mods to increase the phone's performance and adblocker like AdAway, blocking ads also make browser loading faster and uses less data because I don't load any ad. Other useful mods are sound mods like Dolby Atmos or Viper, that boost sound volume and quality, increasing the experience of sound on our devices.
-Full control of the the phone. With root access I can use Kernel Auditor in order to monitor and control my phone's CPU, memory usage etc..
-Xposed Framework. I don't think it needs explaination, it would be also too long ?
-Use of substratum, with this app I can customize more the phone, change navigation bar, boot animation, system sounds.
-There are countless things you can do with root access, on XDA you will keep finding out new and amazing mods and things that requires root!

Is the only benefit to have magisk modules on stock rom? I have XT1806 rooted TWRP r9 Gladius Magisk 14.3 flashed this kernel but kept booting straight to recovery...had to do a full restore. I'm looking for custom kernels that provide speed and power benefits. Thanks

Just a note on kernels
I've tested many many kernels on many devices. When they are configured the same, performance/battery is about the same. Any difference was slight enough to be considered noise in the test methods. I always suggest to learn about kernel parameters then tweak it to the way you want. Any kernel will give more performance, or battery life, or anything between - all depends on how you configure it.
Ps - same device, same twrp, supersu instead of magisc, no problems. Except seems not compatible with ex kernel manager - it doesn't apply settings. I believe it doesn't set proper permissions to be able to write. But hey, it's young and a stockish kernel, hope to see more.

Here's a link to GeneticEngineer's AFH-hosted original kernel from the TWRP thread. I don't think he'll mind it being reposted in this thread. This should tide people over until you can iron out the bugs in your build.

A stock based kernel isn't gonna play well with custom ROMs, unless your secondary ROM is a stock ROM? I plan on creating one for cm-14.1+ based ROMs too.

Stock Debloated Oreo

About this project
These are debloated stock roms based upon stock Oreo. These should be treated as a custom ROM that happens to be just like stock, just slimmer
Changes from stock
Removed a number of system and privileged apps to reduce the download size from 1.4GB to approx 0.9GB
dm-verity and forced encryption are disabled (encryption will still work if you choose)
A few tweaks here and there
Does not come with firmware (i.e. the modem partition, etc)
Does not erase modemst1/2 partitions (i.e. your EFS)
Removed boot animation (as of 85-17-2 build)
As this does not include the firmware, it should be treated like every other custom ROM out there that is based off the Oreo blobs:
Clean flash and boot into full stock Oreo at least once to ensure your system is fully working
If you have flashed someone else's persist, make sure to use TWRP flashable Soak Test 1
You can use the TWRP flashable builds here: Potter Oreo TWRP Flashable Builds

All builds are available in the following location:

The latest build is based upon the February 2019 security patch version of stock, OPSS28.85-17-6. Direct link:

Apps that I thought about removing but have kept in
Chrome - you generally need to have a browser for many things to work. Setup wizard and adding accounts will fail if Chrome is not present (confirmed).
MotoSignatureApp - Moto Display tends not to work properly (e.g. pick up to display notifications)
Messages - Generally you want to have an SMS app
Apps I've added in
F-Droid and its privileged extension (think something like Play Store but does Open Source only)
Google Dialer Framework, allows you to use the Google Dialer without errors or warnings

Why don't you replace the apps by Google LLC that you chose to keep viz. Chrome and Messeges with the AOSP alternatives?
That would be better.
You can also include other Moto signature apps that are compatible but not included in the official stock ROM.

Good point, and I was thinking about that. I think that WebView is actually installed (unless I installed it through some other means without realising), but disabled. I'd have to try a clean flash with it removed to know for sure. In any case, it's not an actual web browser, just a 'framework'.
For Messages will consider that. Also since Google Photos is removed, might put in the AOSP Gallery app.
Not sure about the other Moto apps, the purpose here is to remove what isn't needed.

I am not referring to Webview when I say AOSP browser. I am referring to the Android Browser. That's the browser app that used come with Kitkat if you can remember but I don't know whether it will be compatible.
I think Motorola Gallery is better than AOSP Gallery and Moto Suggestions can also be added to get Night Light feature that was not in official stock.
I don't know whether Moto Voice can replace Google Assistant but it's also worth a shot.
You can include these three after testing.
Except these three other Moto signature apps are not that great imo.

[CLOSED] Rick's Rom DUB5 SM-N986U1 Snapdragon Safe Update To One UI 3.1

First, I am not responsible to what happens after you flash this. If your phone dose not work afterwords it is your own doing. I didn't force you to flash it..
This is a stock rom for the most part for the Snapdragon Note 20 Ultra U1 that I use as my daily driver. I disabled file encryption, removed knox, fixed screen cast and shealth plus Bluetooth and smartwatch pairing. Most of the Google apps are uninstallable. I'll try to keep this up to date every month the best I can. Enjoy.
You Must Have A Unlocked Bootloader and a SM-N986 U1 or U Ultra to proceed. This Might Wipe Your Data!! Make a Back up!!.
Instructions:
1: Flash with Odin in the respective slots (bl, ap, cp and csc).
2: Wipe and format data in recovery if coming from a different rom or android version.

Thanks I built it last night.
Anyone who downloaded this before this post please re-download the rom. I had a file mixed up with another rom by mistake, sorry. New files are uploading now. Please report any problems you may have if any, Thanks.
I uploaded some a new build that addresses the game launcher crash and theme store crash.
@Misterxtc Very glad to see more custom roms being built.
Would you be able to build an AOSP rom for the Note 20 Ultra (SM-986U)?
Would love to see an AOSP rom like Lineage OS or Havoc OS

Me too but I haven't gotten one to boot properly yet. I also own a S20+ and would like to build something for both. I am exploring the options.

I don't think so but I'm really not sure, I haven't looked into it. The big deal for me is downloading more firmware, keeping track of more files, storage space and time. Honestly it's pretty simple to build your own. You can get all the info you need for that here .
@Misterxtc, what is your preferred method for root access?

Thanks, I figured something like this would make it easier for those who like stock and are unlocked every month.

I was sitting here debating on whether to go with 10 or 11 lol. Durrr me...I'm all for a custom cleaned up ROM any day over the untouched stock firmware. I see that your ROM is on the latest 11 (CUA1). Nice!
Since your tweaking the universal U1 firmware and since there isn't any carrier bloatware in there, is there much to really remove to make it even more lean and lighter? I know in the old days those firmware's were loaded with bloat and by removing them helped it a lot.
I also noticed that the latest 11 file size was smaller than the latest 10. From what you can see is that from just making 11 more efficient, thus making it lighter?
Regarding the change log:
Disabled File Encryption - Is that for the entire device file encryption or the built in folder encryption that was disabled? What are the benefits from disabling this? Does it just make it smoother even if you don't use the encryption feature on the device?
Removed Knox - Does using a smart watch to use Samsung Pay etc... still a work around even with the device knox removed?
Are there any settings to be able to tweak camera settings to improve the camera? iirc back in the Note 3 and 4 days, a Dev said that there was a value in the image quality or something that was set to I think 8 instead of the max 10? He had maxed that out and included that in the ROM... I'm curious if such adjustments exist in the 11?
Does the CUA1 have the baked in Microsoft Swiftkey (VIRUS) or is that only on carrier firmware's?
I have the Unlocked varaint of the Note 20 Ultra straight from Samsung. Oddly, it came with firmware ATGO, which is ATT lol.. but I'm on TM. What has been annoying is that I can't uninstall the darn microsoft swiftkey.
I love Swiftkey as a keyboard (best touch accuracy IMO), but despise the intrusivemness, so I like to use my own tweaked swiftkey with the internet premissions removed w/ using AFWall+ to block everything else. ie...
The thing is that I haven't been able to install the tweaked swiftkey due to it not letting me since the stock MS one is baked in...
