I have noticed recently (perhaps related to the .21 update?) that Google sky was not tracking well with my movements... so I tried 2 compass applications to validate the e-compass performance.
The compass behavior is really squirrely and seems to have very little correlation to which direction the tablet is pointed.
It seems that the compass must have worked better in the past as Google Sky used to work great.
Can anyone else report if their compass is working properly? What app did you use to verify it? What orientation did you hold your TFP to get a good result?
Mine has never worked correctly, and I've been trying off and on since I first got it in December, before any official ICS update was even released. I always assumed it was related to the poor GPS performance.

It never worked reliably. I'm sorry but I am skeptical about your statement "worked great". Search this forum for my posts mentioning the e-compass as almost unusable.
I once had fun watching the compass readings constantly revolve, making full 360 deg sweeps in just a little over a minute (sic!). A recalibration brought back the unreliable, miserable readings.
Yes this is a problem. But can be fixed by a simple step. Just move, rotate your tab in all directions (up down, left right and on its own AXIS)
This should fix the compass. In my case, thus would fix it but would revert back

Make sure you do not have mock locations enabled in the developer settings....This throws off the compass
google skymap sucks for me too. I'll double check to see if mock locations is on, I don't think it is, I've fiddled with all the skymap settings with no results.
I have to calibrate my compass using GPS Status every time I want to use it. After that, it seems to work fine.

These e-compasses do not use the magnetic field to give direction. They totally rely on GPS. GPS accuracy requires movement. The compass gets 2 (or more) readings, and then caculates the location and direction from them.
Even a good GPS device like Garmin, will have difficulty. If you are stationary, the gps reading will vary. The best accuracy for consumers is about 10 ft. If you had a test app, and were stationary....you would see that the individual gps readings are grouped in about a 10 ft radius from your position, with a few being outside that.

Please stop diffusing inaccurate information.
Prime is equipped with a physical magnetometer. PERIOD.
You can try to recalibrate the compass by moving the device in a large figure of eight in a horizontal plane, outside and away from any ferrous metal.
Also, beware of any magnetic devices, fastenings or closures in protective cases you might buy. Don't park your Prime on a convenient HiFi loudspeaker top!

The Prime's keyboard itself has a magnet in it, and I'd imagine the Prime does as well to register that field so that the screen shuts off when you close it.
But yes! Keep your Primes off of awesome speakers lol, as well as all your other precious electronics
I haven't actually played with the compass all that much as I've fretted over WiFi/BT and GPS. I know that my accelerometer consistently feels off: until I actually run tests on it. I think many of our issues (outside of the aluminum body and bad choice in wireless module) really are drivers and apps' implementations of h/w as opposed to the h/w itself.

I do not know why the hell you would post this. The meter does detect magnetic fields. Why do you think they call it an ecompass. Put a magnet close to it and open a compass app. Even your GPS explanation is horrible and incorrect.

Okay I have read this and tried on an android phone with no success. Just to clear things up, do I keep the prime oriented the same way through the figure eights or point it through, kinda like a kid playing with a toy car driving in a figure eight. Also do I keep the prime horizontal as well? sorry to sound like a dolt, but I can see many ways to do a figure eight with the prime. Your Horizontal plane was a help.
As far as I know, just keep the device pointing the same way and horizontal.
If your compass does not respond to this, I suggest it might be stuffed.

Is it true the micro sd card is read only on this tablet? Can file browsers like astro file browser acess the micro sd card ok?
Does the speaker placement cause any issues? Especially if you are going the be holding the tablet there most of the time.
How long does it take to charge the tablet?
Sorry for the long questions but i need to be sure that this is the right tablet for me, Samsung don't offer 32gb model in the uk so I'm really interested in the Z2 because of this.

I've not seen any audio lag. The touchscreen isn't the most responsive I've ever used, but is fine with fingers. Stylii are a different issue - I've not found one that works well. I've not seen any lag whilst using the tablet (except for the odd microstutter when Google play decides to update everything at once). I updated to the latest firmware as soon as I got it, so I don't know what these were like before.

All KitKat devices restrict apps writing to the SD (Astro for example would only be able to read the SD). By default you can only write to the SD by plugging into a computer and copying files across. However, if you're rooted, you can just install SD Fix (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix) and get the pre-KitKat behaviour.

They're a little low, but the tablet is so light that you're not likely to be gripping it hard enough to distort the sound. Personally I tend to hold it one handed in landscape like I would a book, with my thumb on the front of bottom edge and my fingers splayed out on the back. This way the speakers are completely unobstructed.

I've not charged from empty, but using the charger it comes with seems pretty quick. I can put it on charge, go make a cup of coffee, get back and it will have gone up by a percent or two. I bought the magnetic dock, and just leave it there when I'm not using it. The battery easily gets me through a day of heavy use, and when I'm at home it just sits on the dock.

I had exactly the same thoughts (also in the UK). 32GB is the way to go. I've had mine about a month now. I've installed pretty much every app/game I'm going to need, and the internal memory is about 80% full.
Some more thoughts:
Pros
This thing is so thin and light that I forget I'm carrying it in my bag. For me, that's a huge bonus over other tablets, and more than makes up for its flaws. It's noticeably easier to hold than an iPad Air over long periods.
Sony's interface is very close to stock Android, and most bloatware (of which there is very little) can be uninstalled.
Waterproofing is nice to have. I thought it was a gimmick at first (does anyone actually use these in the bath?), but I use mine to display recipes whilst cooking, and it's nice to not have to worry about splashes and spills.
Vibration - it lets me know that I've turned it on. I wouldn't miss this if it were missing, but it's nice to have.
NFC. I love NFC. I have a tag on the bottom of my universal remote; I use the remote to turn on my Hi-Fi, swipe the tag across the tablet, and the tablet connects over Apt-X Bluetooth and starts Spotify. Magic!
Dual-shock compatibility. It just works (you need an OTG cable for the initial pairing, after that it's Bluetooth), and is very slick.
Cons
Screen resolution isn't as nice as other tablets. This isn't noticeable when used normally, though if it's closer to your face (e.g. you're lying down using it in bed), you can see the pixels.
The waterproof flaps on the SD and USB connectors feel a bit flimsy. I'd highly recommend the magnetic doc, or a connector adapter such as the Magnector-X for charging, so that you don't have to open the port covers.
It's a fingerprint magnet (but you can just wash it clean, because it's waterproof).
The IR blaster seems to have a very narrow "beam" so is a bit tricky to use. There is also a ~1 second delay between pressing the onscreen button and the IR signal being sent. I've given up on using it, but I'm not sure how much use I'd have gotten from it anyway.
I'd go to a store and have a play if I were you. Try and find one that's not got a huge security lock on it; I've seen this on display in some stores with a metal cage around it, or a huge self retracting security cable, which makes it hard to get a feel for how it would be to hold.
i know about the screen resolution, it's not as great compared samsung note 2014 but the Z2 has the advantage of more memory space, i think that is a good trade off imo.
i tend to hold my tablet in portrait mode so the speaker placement is a issue for me, i like that it's light so i can sit down comfortably with it for long periods, i have the galaxy note 10.1 2012 model and it's quite heavy compared to current models out there now, especially for long periods of use.
that is a bonus that the tablet supports the dual shock 3 out of the box, on other devices you have to root to use the controller wirelessly.
the waterproof flaps you say are a issue, so if you are using it in a water environment wouldn't that cause problems?
the galaxy note 10.1 2012 is just as bad when it comes to finger prints but it can be easily cleaned.
i didn't know it has vibration feedback, no website lists this feature, so thanks for telling me that.
samsung is king of bloat, that is good that there is minimal it saves me having to remove it all when i set it up lol.
battery life sounds good, maybe even better than the galaxy note 2012, quite frequently i'm charging the device during the day while using it. it could be because the device is getting old though.

I am very happy with my Z2 tablet.

I don't think you'll have any problems then. The top and bottom bezels (as viewed in landscape) are large enough that if held in portrait mode you're very unlikely to ever cover the speakers. Assuming you're right handed and holding the tablet with your left (this is how I read newspapers and magazines on mine), one speaker will be about an inch diagonally down and to the right of the base of your thumb, and the other will be well out of the way at what is now the top of the tablet.
It also worth pointing out that the tablet allows screen rotation in all directions (is this true of all tablets? My phone doesn't do this by default), so if you do ever find that the speaker placement is an issue, you can just rotate it 180°.

Agreed. I should have been clearer when I listed the flaps as a con in my post above. I've got no concerns about their waterproofness. My concern is that if I was opening the USB cover daily to charge the tablet it might become weakened or damaged, which is why I bought the magnetic chargers. The port covers feel quite delicate when opened, but very secure when closed.

Same here. I've tried a DAGi 701 stylus (which is passive). Sketching is doable, but the display doesn't seem sensitive enough for writing. I hope that this is a software thing, though even if it were fixed, the extra features of the Note series such as the hover and palm detection would make it much more suited to note taking. I see the Z2 as more of a media consumption, rather than creation, device.
ok, thanks for the feedback guys, ill take all your replies in consideration when deciding, i use the black rubber end stylus, the one you mentioned is similar to the stylus that is included with the note 10.1, but it seems that no matter what stylus i will use i think i'll get the same results which is a shame really.

unfortunately there is no attachable keyboard cover for the S9 yet like there was/is for the S8. I know the camera and fingerprint scanner are different. But would it work (or did someone maybe know someone) who actually tried it and modified the keyboard cover so it works with the S9...

Would be interesting to know.
Remember that the cover-part has a (nfc?) chip and a magnet (near the power key). And also the keyboard part has a tiny magnet in the lower left.
I took one for the S6 Edge apart, and I can see that the S8 is quite similar. See this
So it is NOT just a matter of cutting a larger hole in the cover, the phablet has to be prepared for it with the suitable strategically placed magnetic sensors to detect that it is there.
For fun I have tried to use some of the non S8-variants on the S8, and could get an S8 back to react with the print part from the S6 Edge.
I also tried some of the other backs, but could not get them to work with the S8 (not even with the S8 keyboard)
But as it seems they have stopped production for Note 8 and S8, I think they unfortunately are abandoning the whole idea, so we should be damn lucky if the S9 got the correct sensors AND even in the same place as on S8
ADD:
Just had a look at the ifixit tear downs of the S8- and S9-, and it does not look promising for a total fit....
On the S8, the magnet at the back has its centre approximately 32mm from the top, and 10mm from the power-switch side.
So if I can measure correctly, the magnetic switch must be the tiny little component mounted north of the square chip with "C3 559 X791" (north of the orange square) here, but the S9 got no chip at that location AFAICS from this.
BUT the S9 does have a similar looking component closer to the vibrator, so it MIGHT be prepared for a cover...
The magnet on the key-part is about 16mm from the bottom and 13mm from the volume rocker side. Just north of the tip of the 3.5mm plug. And there IS a similar small component on the other side of the small print on both the S8- and S9-...
ADD II
Apart from the above add, note that surprisingly the keyboard with an S8 ALSO works both in Aeroplane mode and with NFC turned off, so the communication with the case must be a dedicated circuitry.
So that has to be there for the S9 too...
ADD: I just verified that the chip is on a small plate, and thus NOT with any antenna in the back plate (updated blog post linked above), so it SHOULD be possible to move that to another location, if the circuitry is placed elsewhere on the S9-
I just tried the s8 keyboard and I could put it on my s9 (snapdragon). It was a very tight and unstable fit, but when I did get it to click the phone recognized it and resized the screen accordingly. Unfortunately the keyboard below wasnt alugned with the buttons, and there was mostly no response. When it did respond I got a key registered from the row below and to the side, e.g. when pressing 't' it would sometimes register as 'f'. Any ideas on how to get this to work properly?

Very interesting that it works that much! Thanks for the info! This at the least proves that the a S9 was designed for a keyboard.
To bad about the slight misalignment though. Do you see the same displacement in all columns? I mean does a W also give an A, and a P an L? (when it does anything)
You COULD try to take the print out and see if a slight move would fix it. But there is no guarantee, as they could have changed the spacing in either direction too (perhaps squeezed in an extra column)
Why SamSung doesn't make for S9?

However, the Samsung Keyboard app, which is responsible for software support of the cover keyboard, does not have a separate kb-cover's layout for the S9 device. This app has layouts for S6, S7, S8, etc. Note 8 is the latest model supported.
Keyboard cover working in exactly the same way as the smart covers. The chip on the back of the case tells the phone the accessory ID, and the magnet on the front signals about the event - the keyboard is connected or the smart cover is closed.
This means that any Samsung smartphone that has version 3 of the Samsung Keyboard app (versions 4 and 5 no longer support cover keyboards) and can detect Samsung accessories, will work with cover keyboards, even those intended for older models. The only problem is shape of the case, I mean geometrical parameters.
1) You connect the keyboard
2) The phone recognize it via back chip + magnet
3) Samsung Keyboard app began to receive signals from it and process them
So no, most likely S9 was not designed for the separate keyboard, but this phone supports keyboard covers from older models.
I have several cover keyboards for S6, S7, S8. I'm thinking of adapting one of them for Note 8 (because it's impossible to find an official overlay keyboard for it!) or another Samsung phone, such as S9 + or Note 9, for which such an accessory was not released at all. Here is my plan:
1) Take a standard protective back cover, glue the chip from the old keyboard cover to it, cut two grooves to snap the front piece with keyboard into place.
2) (most difficult part for me) Design and 3D print a new front part of the keyboard case. Extract the keyboard module and magnet from the old keyboard cover, and fit it into the 3D printed front part.
3) Modify and rebuild the Samsung Keyboard APK to change the XML layout in order to match it the physical layout of the buttons. I may need to get root access to install a modified application, or I may not - IDK, need to try.
I think this should work. At least it looks like it should work.
Unfortunately, I don't have much time for this activity, so I don't know when I'll do it. But maybe it will help someone in his research. Good luck!
I did test the s6 at a retailer and I noticed that the Samsung Notes App did not recognize my handwriting in landscape mode at a specific place. It was when I did get closer with my palm to the edge (with power and volume button on the upper side).
At the middle kind of a little bit to the right there seems to be a blind spot where writing/drawing is not recognized in first place. Only after second or third attempt and then it seems like the recognition of the pressure is half off.
Don't know if the bright light from above or a already often used spen causes this.
Can any owner confirm?

Unbelivable that you have to keep such things in mind when you want to you a tablet with that price...
Does Apple have such problems with their ipad series? Im so much struggling in the decision if apple or samsung. Im a Android guy and would like to keep my Android world but i want a performant device which does not have childhood injuries like that....

It isn't the tablet, but the case/holder.
I have two cases. One which the tab slips in to a holder—no probs there.
My other case holds the tab (very securely) with a magnet—therefore the dead spot. Love this case, except for the dead spot ceated by the stting magnet. This an awesome case in every other way, especially because there is nothing blocking the sides of the tablet, no edge swipe issues, et al.
So, I've just accepted that if I want to do any serious S-pen writing or drawing I have to either go case-less, or switch to the other one.

Hello together,
i'm quite unhappy because my compass isn't working for a while now, it's just being really retarded. I tried to calibrate it within the google maps app a few times by swinging around my phone like an idiot and by using "Live View".
It always strays away from the true direction in a few minutes and in some apps like Kommot or Locus Map i can't even use it (its not turning to the correct direction in the apps the direction indicator is just pointing like it's nailed to the top of the phone.

I tried out the CIT-menu too (tapping kernel-number 5 times) but can't get a stable compass direction there.
Try in Cit, you can find it pressing on "kernel version" in settings. You can test and calibrate your compass directly from engineering mode
Hello, thx for your answer, i tried that out too but i don't know how to calibrate the compass there. Most of the times i dont even get a direction indication there and when, it's very unstable.
When i go to "more tools" - the 3 dots in the top right corner of the screen - i can calibrate a few things like accelerometer, or gyro but i can't figure out how to do that for the magnetometer.
Remove it from its case, reboot and it should work. The problem is magnetic cases interfering with the compass through poor case design. You need a case with a magnetic STRAP.

You're completely right i've been so stupid not to notice that. I tried taking it out of the case and recalibrating the compass before but the reboot does the fix.
That's the solution for my problem so this thread can be closed.
I was in exactly the same situation a few weeks ago. It took me a while to figure it out. I was convinced the xiaomi had sent me a broke phone but then I realised if it was broke then there'd be no output at all. Stripped the case, same. Rebooted without case and it worked. Put the case back on and borked again. Bought a new case with a strap and no more problems at all.
Its a shame because the case I had was expensive at £30 for cheap plastic but it looked really nice on the phone. I reckon you had the same case from amazon..

I bought a new case with a magnetic strap just as recommended and everything works fine now - big thank you!
