Yeah thinking about jumping on this. Only things holding me back is I don't know how it'll be going back to a smaller screen from the Nexus 6 and I'm assuming the OnePlus 5 and an Axon 8 will be released in the near future, probably both for ~$400.

I don't know, I just know right now has never looked like a better time to buy an Axon 7 standard model.

Well I was all set to buy it but then it tacked on $30 in taxes. ]=
Anyway I found one in great condition on Swappa for $300 tax free so I went with that. [=

It would be great if the next Nexus phone came out similarly priced to the GSM GNex. I think it would go a long way towards showing people that $650 is not the best price for phones and are only being propped up by ridiculous post-paid contract shenanigans.
If the "Nexus 4" is under $400 off contract, and is pentaband GSM, I'll probably buy it. With the T-Mobile $30 data plan, and the Straight Talk $45 "unlimited" plan, I do not see a purpose for buying a phone on contract. It's still cheaper to go pre-paid even if the phone costs $599, but I'll probably wait until it comes down considerably in price. I try to swap my phones once a year.
The article's highly speculative; he's drawing conclusions from out-of-context evidence like a quote about patent restrictions and the Nexus 7 strategy. The N7 strategy, however, came about due to necessity: consumers just weren't buying more expensive tablets, and they needed to kill the kindle fire "renegade".
Phones, on the other hand, are selling fine for high costs (I would guess, largely due to the BS subsidy/contract system) and google would risk scaring its oems by delivering a dirt cheap competitor.
The next Nexus may indeed be relatively cheap on the play store, but I'd guess the starting price would be at least $500. After all, the $400 price wasn't introduced until the GN was around 6 months old. Even now, the GN is just $50 below that.
The only way I could think of introducing a $400 phone would be to make it only a minor upgrade. This isn't ruled out in general, especially with the rumors of multiple Nexii.

Compensation

I waited most of this year for the Note 7 to be released.
I've not been able to use the phone properly for most of September (had to leave it at home during a holiday where it would have been great to use the camera). Had the phone crippled to 60% battery. Had to pack up and exchange the phone. Have bought two cases (one temporary while official Samsung LED case came into stock), a wireless fast charger and signed up to a year long SIM only contract.
There is nothing on the market that makes a half decent replacement. There is absolutely nothing that covers all of the features and functionality.
We (in the UK) await Samsung's offer to rectify this.
If as is rumoured we are to be offered a full refund or an S7/S7Edge plus a refund of the difference then I find that utterly unacceptable. I could have bought an S7 Edge when it came out, I didn't want one. I certainly don't want one now when it's due to be replaced in less than 6 months time. I absolutely don't want one at full retail price.
So here is a proposal to Samsung. Sell me a S7 Edge at HALF price with the promise to buy it back and exchange it for an Note 8 when it is released next year. Refund the cost of all my accessory purchases.
As for the Gear VR (now rendered useless), I've no idea what to do with that.
someone need to make a petition for everyone urging Samsung to do the right thing. I can't use my Note 7 anymore and stuck in a 2 yr contract. I am willing to take the S7E for now but they should sell the Note 8 to us who had the Note 7 at a discounted price.

100% this. I want the option to use an S7 or similar until they've released a successor and allow me to take that up when it's available!
From what I've heard, people can exchange it for an s7or get a full refund for the device from contractor or the place you bought it from

That's the story that I've heard from a few sources. However it's hardly compensation is it.
I'm sorry for messing you about for the last month, I'm sorry that you will have to wait a year for a proper replacement, I'm sorry that you will have to pay FULL PRICE for a phone that you don't really want as a replacement. ETC. And for all these sorries we get NOTHING.
Not good enough.
Yeah but because they locked bootloader I had a T-Mobile version and I couldn't not Route 9 so like I said we can't bootloader locked I had to ship my T-Mobile one back to T-Mobile I got a full refund but then I purchased and international version so I could have came root but I had to purchase off of eBay. I paid the full amount through a store. But he is not holding the store accountable eBay not holding themselves accountable and Samsung cannot hold themselves accountable period Samsung will not give me a refund or help me out neither will eBay so at the time being I'm stuck

they are giving ppl 100 to stay pssssh
Accepting their replacement offer seems a total ripoff. The S7 Edge goes for 799€, the S7 for 699 in their online store over here in Germany, 200 € !! more than on Amazon.
I called Verizon, gave them all my note 7 receipts from Amazon and eBay like lens case, screen cover, 2 wireless chargers and they credited my account by the total amount. I am bringing in the VR to also get refunded. I get to keep the 256gb memory card and the wireless charger as the wife has s7 and can use them

Oh sorry I
Samsung issued two recalls, stopped production on the Note 7 completely, and now all they can do is hope consumers actually return their Note 7 devices as requested for refunds of the purchase price or exchange towards another smartphone.
I don't have a problem with anything that Samsung itself has done so far.
It would go a really long way if Samsung were to offer a good incentive and guaranteed path to get whatever the next iteration of the Note line ends up being when it's ready to launch.
The most upsetting part of the entire situation is being without such a great phone after getting a taste of how awesome it is. I know it's my personal favorite device ever, and I'm much more upset that I have to give it up and use an upgrade to switch to another device that I have no interest in since when I originally upgraded to the Note 7 I gave up my Note 4 in the process.
When you say you gave up the Note 4 in the process of getting a Note 7, did Verizon offer you some kind of discount for the trade in so you'd get the Note 7 at a discounted price, and if so what was that price?
The reason I ask is because if you have a Note 7 (and haven't returned it yet) Samsung is willing to buy it back from you for the full retail price - they do have some expectation that if you do go that route you'll pay off Verizon for what you do owe on it but that should leave you with some cash left if it was discounted. Since I don't know how much you might have paid for or are going to pay for (if it's under contract) the Note 7 that amount might be worth trying to get your hands on, could buy yourself a used Note 4 maybe.
I know a lot of people are in that same situation where they traded in a device to get a break on the Note 7's full retail price but nobody ever seems to say exactly how much of a discount that actually is or was. I see that Verizon has some program that offers "up to $300 when you upgrade" so I'm guessing that could be the amount, or something close to it, maybe?

Great Deal on Axon 7 US

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/302297611641
It's an okay price. Got mine at best buy for 350 and a $50 gift card. My dad got his unused on craigslist for 300. This phone goes on sale a lot I've noticed
When I saw that price I jumped on it. Is the cheapest price for a new one I've seen. It's time to make my Nexus 6 a backup phone or sell it, not sure yet. Can't wait to get mine.

It's steeper than I'd hoped. Not to mention the difficulty getting this from Korea.

They're selling for 700,000 KRW (about 650 USD) here in Korea. That's cheaper than a leftover S7 (if you could even find one new), and about $400 cheaper than the S8/S8+ and soon to be released Note 8. Rest assured the 400,000 units going to market will be sold out in a matter of days in Korea; you can forget about buying it elsewhere for anything less than 1000 USD (with tax / duty / shipping), which nobody is going to pay for obvious reasons. Every new Samsung flagship sells for 1000 USD here; many Koreans will jump at a flagship level phone for 650 USD.
yeah!!! finally!!
