Hi,
I am currently developing an app for a customer. It is only intended for his staff. The specification says, the app should be updated automatically. The devices may not be rooted and are running Froyo and Gingerbread.
Is it possible to update the app without the user being able to stop the update and giving a feedback to the user on how long the update is going to take and its progress?
How can I get access to the program files without having root permission?
Or, if I can not, how can I install an APK while the user cannot interact with the installation. And can the installation automatically start the program when done?
Always bearing in mind, that I can not root the phones.
Thank you very much,
Chris

i have upgraded if u do ota it wont break the root as its just ota , you can also do complete firmware then I am not sur e
for complete firmware:
503L
http://www.emui.com/nsp/geturl.php?path=7D-503L_EMUI3.0_Android4.4_V100R002C208B009.zip&rid=963
501u
http://www.emui.com/nsp/geturl.php?path=7D-501u_EMUI3.0_Android4.4_V100R002C208B009.zip&rid=962
i have read in the chinese forums that this version is supposed to be the one that can retain user data when upgrading from EMUI 2.3, however problems seem to exist after flashing (dark screen when camera is launched, the pull down notification menu stopping midway etc) and Huawei ended up suggesting wiping system / user data to solve them, kinda defeats the purpose. anyway, ymmv.
BTW, does anyone know how to get rid of the update prompt? It keeps nagging me to update.
In going from R001C233B021 to R002C208B009 on the 7D-501u with the OTA update, will it change the dpi from 320 to 400? If so, I'm not upgrading.

you can manually change at will the dpi after updating, by modifiyng buildprop if rooted. Or with adb commands if non rooted.
Check for (or open up yourself) a devoted DPI change thread of this forum, if you want to know more about it.
i was also pushed B009.
btw im from singapore using starhub and B008 chinese rom.
updating now.. excites much!

As far as I can tell from the other threads, changing the dpi to 320 breaks other stuff. Also some of my apps won't
work with root or with root cloak. There's no way I'm doing an upgrade that I know will break stuff rather than fix stuff, just for a slightly newer version of Android. My battery icon is already white anyway.

It Is same android version like 320 dpi kitkat!
I am in China but checking for updates tells me there is no update (I'm on 2.2). So perhaps this is still not the build intended for general release.
OK, it is now showing as available as an OTA today BUT trying to download it always ends in failure. Perhaps loads of other people are trying to download it at the same time....
Just download it from the EMUI page.
I waited for the OTA, hoping that it would not wipe the device (unlike the emui page download version?).
After taking 8 hours to download, it finally tells me it will wipe my personal data. What kind of stupid upgrade is this? No other brand of Android phone I have ever owned has wiped data on upgrading from one version to another. Very disappointing. Huawei, you must do better than this if you expect people to buy your phones more than once.
It did not wipe mine.
I just installed it, and wished I hadn't. ALL paid for apps were wiped. Other apps were also deleted. I can no longer connect to Google services (Play store, Gmail, etc). What a pile of rubbish. An OTA update shouldn't do this kind of thing. This is my first, and last, Huawei phone. Nice hardware, shame about the software.
Hello All,
I want to add my OTA server URL into AOSP for my released device and I know I can use some applications to do it but I want to modify the default URL of Google's AOSP. I had been grabed OTA URL of Nexus 5 (android.clients.google.com....) as well as got some logs (from adb logcat) then I used grep command with some keywords as "android.clients.google.com/", "SystemUpdateService", "DownloadAttemp",... to find where the URL in. But I found nothing.
Anyone can tell me where I can change default OTA server URL.
Thanks,
Can anyone help me?
You most probably receive push notifications, so the URL is not available. I know though that the app you have to freeze if you want to disable OTAsin rooted devices is "Software update MUC", so you may start searching for that app in the sources.
A side note: although it would be way better to use the official OTA application rather than using 3rd party software as ROMs use to, there must be a reason. I once thought about modding that app, but never had the time nor the real intereset in doing so, as I'm out of custom ROMs development ATM.
I don't know if recent custom recoveries are able to detect the official OTA signals to automatically flash the update, nor if, for instance, the log is encrypted or not.

Because it's not coded yet. Xposed is an open source project, by the way. You want installer to be able to update over-the-air? You want periodic update check and notifications? Go on, code it and submit a pull request.
To be honest I do not know how to do it and I just noticed that and thought to offer it as a proposal for streamlining. Also for alerts and regarding the automatic update ...
In conventional Linux installations, the package system has a mechanism through which one can set specific packages to not be upgraded when a command to "upgrade all" is issued. I can't seem to find some similar mechanism for Android. I don't want to run the risk of accidentally doing an "upgrade all" on my phone and end up updating a particular app to the latest which happens to be nasty and unusable.
If you're rooted, you can use Titanium Backup to break the Market link for any app you don't want to update/upgrade. Otherwise, don't use Update All.

You can leave your settings in the Play Store to update all, if you want, and then you can go into your individual app through the store and and click the 3 dots at the top right and uncheck Auto-update for which ever particular app you want.
