Magnetic vent mount - Samsung Galaxy S8 Accessories

I have a tech matte vent mount and I stuck my S8 to it with no steel plate on the back and it held. Does anyone know if this is ok or will it potentially damge the phone?

Won't damage the phone as far as I know but the contact isn't as strong as if you had a plate. Downside of a plate is wireless charging not working. I have to somehow figure out how I'm going to place a plate ok it without killing the wireless charging function

I purchased this one for my S6, seems to work well on my S8 so far. Won't fast charge it, but suits my needs.
Just search Amazon for it, I cannot post a direct link

That is correct but my phone seems to get a lot hotter when I do this.

Week before I got the s8 I tried this with my note 5 and it did indeed run hot. I decided to forget about magnetic mounts due to this. Between the nfc chip and wireless charging coils you have to place the plate far down and it makes for an unstable connection due to it being top heavy. So now I rock an iottie quick release mount that sits in my CD player. It's low profile and clicks shut when I put my phone in it. Best mount I've ever had.
Sent from my S8

How secure is the phone without any plate? I've been looking at mounts and I don't want to stick anything to the back of my phone and I also don't use a case.

Does it hold the phone pretty sturdy without any plate?

Both the internal plate (designed to go between the case and the phone) and the magnetic sticker (to use on the back of the phone or outside back of a case) contains 4 small corner magnets in it. These magnets are used to keep the phone correctly positioned and are quite strong. I have attempted to use this charger with only the phone (both S6 and S8) without the additional magnets and had no success. A good bump in the road will knock it clean off the mount. The plus side is that the phone does not get hot during wireless charging on this mount or the few I have in my house. Also it will stick to any metallic surface, such as my refrigerator (nice for controlling music playback while in the kitchen).

My phony is pretty stable on my mount with no plate. I wouldn't go off road with it or even down a bumpy road but over your normal paved road it's not bad

Think it would be possibly to swap the magnets out for stronger ones? I really don't want to put the extra metal on to the phone but I also don't want the thing dropping off! I was close to ordering this today but now I'm having second thoughts

I am not sure. Seems like this charger relies more on the strong magnets in the sticker / case plate than what is contained in the actual mount itself. I certainly wouldn't recommend anyone using this mount / charger with a bare S6 or S8 from personal experience. There could also be some better alternatives out there at this point as I purchased the charging mount about 1 1/2 years ago.

This isn't a box made out of lead lol, it works fine. wireless signals go every direction... lol not a beam that shoots in 1 direction.
oh yeah, you also have to drill a giant hole in the wireless charger.

Magnetic Car Mount

I passed on a Steelie because of the thickness of the magnet that I'd have to attach to my phone or case. I just ordered an iMagnet, a Tetrax XWay, and a $7 Cellet (pretty much because it was $7). When they arrive in 2 days, I'll post a follow-up. I've never owned a magnetic mount, and I'm facinated by the concept.
I am not so much opposed to the Steelie, but somehow, ordering 3 mounts felt justifiable and 4 mounts felt super crazy.
I'm curious what experiences others have had with magnetic car mounts.

I have the Tetrax Fixway for my current gnex and it's great. It's the main reason I changed my mind about getting the s-view cover. I wouldn't be able to use the tetrax with it. Just for fun, I mounted up my and Galaxy Note 8.0 using a TPU case on my tetrax and used it as navigation for a few days. It worked fine, so I'm not too worried about the GN3.

Of the 4, only the Steelie has an actual magnet on the phone, I think. The others just require metal plates or buttons on/in the phone or case. So they should be fine when not in the dock. I won't use the S-pen while docked, so I'm good there. And I don't use NFC or wireless charging yet.
But, yes, the Steelie will cause a circular spot on the screen where the pen won't write. Hopefully, I'm right about the metal plates for the others, but I'll let you know...
So what does anybody use NFC for anyway? And what kind of wireless charging are folks already using with their N3? I'm curious.

The arrangement of the 4 magnets in the dock itself make it so the field is circled around the button. Tetrax has a demo video on their website under Support > FAQ. I can't link urls yet.
I use NFC to make purchases occasionally and haven't had any issues. You did just remind me about wireless charging which I plan to do for this phone. Hopefully the button doesn't lift the gn3 too far away from the pad.
Hey guys just an update on this product. I bought an iMagnet http://www.amazon.com/Cradle-less-Q...e=UTF8&qid=1380960297&sr=8-1&keywords=imagnet
This came with 2 square adhesive metal plates and 1 round non-adhesive metal plate. I tried several configurations and here are the results (with nfc):
1. Metal plate between battery and back cover (square): NFC interferes completely
2. Metal plate between battery and back cover (round): NFC sometimes work
3. Metal plate BENEATH battery square AND round: NFC works perfectly
The third configuration is what I'm using and does not interfere with NFC and S-beam. Oh, and no bulging on standard battery cover door.

Are you talking about putting the metal plates inside the OEM back cover of a Note 3? Please post a picture of the plate inside the phone, I can't visualize how/where there's room with that huge battery taking up so much space, it extends down almost to the base of the phone.

Yes please can you post a picture. I was planning on getting the steelie, but it is good I read the reviews before that it interferes with the phone. And I was worried about the adhesive material sticking to the back cover. I am wanting to get this mount as well. So if pictures can be shown that would be greatly appreciated. Also curious about this...would you mind helping us out with some pictures pls?
Also, for JBN, Mychal (OP) and anyone else who has this - what do you do for charging? Just use the cable straight from the plug? Or have you found a nice way to wrap it on the mount, etc? If this iMagnet had wireless charging that would be incredible...
The Imagnet works great!
I have the imagnet and am currently using it on my note 3. I have the metal rectangular piece with adhesive in the phone on top of the battery but beneath the battery door. It works fine inside there and does not effect the screen or s-pen even while connected to the mount. The metal strip is actually not a magnet, it's some sort of metal material but it is not magnetic. I used the rectangular metal piece on my note 2 above the the battery door and beneath my tpu case i had and it added no noticeable bulk. My tpu case fit on there just fine. I used it for 4months will no problem,. Occasionally because of the houston texas heat I would find the imagnet on the floor in my car sometimes. I would just rinse the bottom off with soap and water ( because the bottom of it has a sticky gel ) and would stick it right back on like brand new. The bottom also uses suction, so it combines both. With ac running in the car the mount will not come off unless the bottom is dirty from not cleaning before you stick it on there. While the phone is mounted and in the 4 months I have used it my phone has never came off the mount. As fas as nfc is concerned I don't use it, so i have no idea if it works or not. The imagnet has been a real blessing in my life and others love it as-well. I'm going to start getting it as gifts for people for Christmas.
This is a users video review from youtube. Check it out and hope this helps!

I use the steelie, and the magnet interfering with the S Pen is a problem for me. What I plan on doing is sticking the magnet to the back of the belt clip holster that comes with the seidio surface case. I ordered a separate holster to also use with the GameKlip.
I just got the iMagnet today. I put both rectangular plates between my Diztronic TPU case and the back of the phone. Works great. NFC also worked for me with no problems. Was able to beam some pics to an S3 with NFC.

Yes, that's what he means. I'm sorry I don't have another camera except the phone, but I wanted to chime in and ensure this method. Pop the oem back off, lay the plate on top of the battery, and pop the back on. No adhesive necessary to hold it in place. No bulge, as the plate is quite thin.
I use the bear bumper case, so the magnet is very strong. I've tested with a tpu case and it still works, just not as satisfyingly strong. Anything bigger than that and just stick a second plate between the case and the phone.
Never had imagnet before this, and I love it. Very clean solution, and the ultimate in one handed operation.
Cheers!

Hi,
about 5cm end2end. Just wondering how are you going to stick metal plate to the back of note-3?
I used Tetrax with my SGS1 and I really love it. I've ordered glossy back cover for my note-3 as I see it the only option...
i have the imagnet and a seidio surface case for my Note 3....I put the metal plate under the case, and while the magnet is strong, I find the phone spinning around when im driving...anyone else have that issue?

Samsung Flip Case with Wireless Charging [HACK]

I have the Offical Samsung Flip Case (like the S-View without the window), and also a wireless charger, but the flip case has no charging receiver.
I bought this ultrathin wireless receiver from Amazon -- http://www.amazon.co.uk/Expower-Ultra-thin-Standard-Wireless-Receiver/dp/B00FWMN69I/
But now the receiver covers the contacts used by the flip case to tell the phone when case is closed so it sleeps, and to awake when the case is open.
The PCB is so thin I could easily poke a hole through with a needle, which meant I could also put a small wire through to allow outside contact so the flip-case can connect to the phone.
First I poked 2 holes just underneath the connectors of the GND and P3.
Then I placed some double-sided sticky tape over the area
And pushed some thin wire through the holes so they went through into the phone to make contact inside. I used a strand of solid CAT5 as it was what I had lieing around.
I then pushed the wire flat onto the tape and trimmed them both so they couldn't short each other
Then some aluminium foil accross the contact area. I first tried without the foil but I found it was a bit hit and miss whether the case made contact with the wire. With the foil it works every time.
Now I have a flip-case with wireless charging!

Frist off, the official charging case is very thick compaired to the regular one. Second the wireless charging cases are hard to come by. Third this is XDA, is all about customization, hacking, and development. If you don't like it, don't go to that thread. Last of all, just by your use of the word "janky" I can tell you are an idiot. Please go flame some where else.

Doesn't this add a irregular hump on the back at the wireless ports? The Original samsung S-view case has two wireless pillars sticking out to fit in the wireless ports. You covered the ports with two wires, how is it not adding a little hump on the back?

Not that I can notice. It does make it more difficult to close the case but once closed I don't see any hump and still feels flat when laid on a surface.
Also the flip cases "pillars" are very thin compared to the ones on the official wireless charging cover.
You could always hammer the wire flat prior to inserting if you wanted.

I feel really stupid not being able to track down a definitive answer but, I have the Verizon Note 3 and the OEM "Samsung Galaxy Note 3 S-View Flip Cover"... does this thing have wireless charging built-in? Samsung offers 2 different S-View covers. One has Qi charging built-in, while the other one does not. The Qi S-View cover is not easy to find at the present time, while the standard S-View cover is readily available. Where did you purchase your S-View cover? The package will tell you which cover it is.
If you didn't personally purchase the cover or don't have the packaging that it came in, then post a pic showing the pins/contacts on the inside of the S-View cover you have. We should be able to tell you which one you have, and if it has Qi capabilities or not.

Thank you. I've definitely been looking for this info. I'm just a bit confused as to what you are contacting on the underside. You can't see that part. There are 3 little holes on the left side of the battery. Does your wire contact just the bottom one? Or does it act as a jumper and contact the middle one and the bottom one? I'm using a slightly different charging receiver. Thanks!

Those contacts are part of a chip that tells the Phone what Kind of Cover is attached.
If you had a charging Cover there would be 3 contacts there plus 2 horizontal contacts higher and to the left for the NFC.

To the OP, thank you for the aluminum foil idea!! That's the one part my hack was missing as everytime I removed the case it was hit or miss with the contacts lining up correctly.

Thanks!

The three contacts to the left of battery are:
1. [CHARGE]
2. [GROUND]
3. [DATA]
The [DATA] part is used by the phone to determine what type of case is attached. The wireless charger connects to 1 and 2, whilst the flip-case connects to 2 and 3. So the holes are in the bottom two and allow the flip case to be recognized by the phone.
The best way to do this is to just buy the Techmatte Qi receiver! It leaves the contacts open on both sides, so my official Samsung S-View case works perfectly without ANY modifications needed!! Highly recommend that everyone go that route!

Yes this would be the perfect solution.
I searched Google Shopping, eBay and Amazon for "Techmatte" and got no results
Anyone know of a UK seller or somewhere that ships to the UK with this in stock?

Show off your minimalist cardocks!

For any of you guys that hate regular big car mounts and maybe have gotten creative or found a minimalist product to mount your note 3 in your car, please share! Im talking magnets, clips, adhesive ... anything that doesnt require a huge arm sticking out of your dash.
Im currently on the hunt and the best minimalist solution i can find currently is the tetrax fixway/xway magnets solution.
If anyone has something cooler, please let me know.

I can't post links still for some reason (mods?) so do a search for the InfiniApps Slyde on Amazon. Really happy with mine. Just got a second for the wife's GS4 in her car.
YMMV depending on the case you use, the soft-touch stuff doesn't "grip" to the rubber pad quite as well, so keep that in mind.
I went with the Caseology One-Touch. Very stable and sturdy.

Clean. Do you think the arms that hold the phone have enough depth to hold the N3 with a qi charger plate behind it? Maybe another 1/2" or slightly less?
Hmmm... I think so. There's quite a little bit of room but then again I have the Tudia Melody case on my Note. I'm not using that car until tonight, I'll get back to you.

Did somebody say minimal?
I bought this mount from ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Car-Air-Ven...1564?pt=US_Mounts_Holders&hash=item3f2a732fac
and then I threw away everything but the actual phone holder. I used heavy velcro to attach it to my dash. As you can see in the pictures, I have a hard wired power cord running to it poking out of the dash.
It doesn't budge. I can't picture anything smaller that does not include a part which must go on the phone (like a magnet).

I really would prefer something like this, but need to find the base and arms that will hold the qi behind.
Minimal mounts
My minimalist Note 3 mounts in my two cars, both using a ProClip car specific dash mount, and a pair of ex-hard drive neo-magnets each.
The magnets are held on with 3M acrylic double sided tape, and I put some heat shrink over the magnets on the mount in the Subaru (but I think I'll cut the shrink tape off, I think I prefer the look of the nickel plated magnets in the open as in the Porsche).
On both cars, I have added a hard-wired 5v micro USB charge line installed at the mount, and I've set the 'screen always on when charging'
under the Developer Options menu.
I glued a thin, 1.5" diameter fender washer on the outside of the hard case, under the rubber cover of the Otterbox Defender.
I like this set up because no permanent modifications were made to the cars, and no modifications were made to the phone itself, just the washer glued to the outside of the Defender hard case.
Cheers'

That ebay one looks good. Do you mind taking a picture along wiht ur Note 3 attached it to your vent, i guess you have directly attached it to your dashboard?
The problem with cd related mounts are 1. they take away the look of your dashboard specially if the interiors of your car is an eye candy *mine is :victory: * 2. On another car forum i read that car mount that attaches to your cd slot can damage the internals if you ever slam your breaks to hard and your car jolts to a stop.
I can sacrifice a vent but cannot place a mount on the top of my dashboard as it looks hideous. Plus i wouldnt want to attach a charging cable to the car mount, i usually keep my phone charged at max most of the times.. thanks to QI technology, plus if et all i need to charge my phone in a car during long drives i will keep a standby cable handy that is removable and attached directly to the phone (like most other mounts do)

I did attach it directly to my dashboard using heavy duty velcro tape. Unfortunately, I threw away the vent mount which came with the phone holder. So I can't take a picture. I did use it for a few days just to see what it was like. It worked well and was reasonably stable. But, I prefer the reduced clutter of just attaching the phone holder to the dash.

I need some info . . . I've decided, now that I'm using wireless charging, that I want to modify my 2 minimalist car mounts to include QI transmitters . . . I've been to every mobile/electronics/cell phone shop and/or kiosk in my area, and QI stuff around here is non-existent.
I'm looking for the smallest diameter (I prefer to try using a round unit first, oval if needed), as well as thinnest QI transmitter available - that also uses mico-USB for power (I'm already wired up with stable micro-USB 5v sources in both cars). I've done countless searches on Ebay and Amazon, and it appears the thinnest I'll find is around 9-10mm, by roughly 65mm (.35" x 2.5").
I'm kind of hoping I can get info from people who have already bought some of these, before I start buying every 'mini/micro' charger on Ebay and Amazon for comparison as to actual size/quality/other potential issues.
Thanks!
Dan

Wireless Charging Back Cover

Black one in stock now: http://www.mobilefun.com/47945-official-samsung-galaxy-alpha-qi-wireless-charging-cover-black.htm
White one on preorder: http://www.mobilefun.com/47948-official-samsung-galaxy-alpha-qi-wireless-charging-cover-white.htm
For wireless charging how does this exactly work?
It works by induction. You need a special charging station (read: a square box that is resting on your nightstand from now on), where you can put your phone on. You don't have to fiddle with plugs.
The charging station works with a standard USB connection and for your phone you need the above mentioned back cover, with is a complete replacement for the existing backplate. The special back cover contains all the electronics and contact pins to connect with the phones battery.
looks like it make the phone super thick!!! Plus cant use with any cases

Of course, they have to place the coil somewhere, it's just a sacrifice you have to make for having the convenience. Also most flexable rubber/silicone cases do work because they stretch (I just prefer to go without them for the sake of ruining the design of the phone).
It should be arriving here by end of week and I'll be sure to take a few pics for you guys.
FYI, I have purchased a wireless charging back for every single Samsung device I have ever owned so I have plenty of experience (S3, S4, Note 3, and currently S5)
I was running the wireless charging back on my LG G3 so I have some experience as well. That back only added 1 millimeter to the thickness...I measured it. Just better design. I have the alpha and I'm currently testing next to the iPhone 6. Liking both phones alot. Need to test battery life

The most disappointing thing about the wireless charging back cover, other than its extra thickness which makes it less flush, is on the standard cover, the SAMSUNG logo is shiny and embossed, giving the same effect as the metallic edging. On the wireless charging cover, its matte and flat like a cheap tacky plastic print. Not at all in-keeping with the quality of the rest of the phone.

Hmm this is quite strange, usually Samsung does not cheap out on those wireless charging back covers and try to make it as identical to original as possible (at least on all the models I've used them on). Perhaps they didn't spend as much into this one due to the lack of popularity/demand for this device. Still surprises me though, it should cost cheaper in that case as well.
@jerflash: Actually on the S5 the gain in thickness is almost not noticeable. My dad uses one and switched backcovers and you don't see it.
Inductive coils are super thin copperwires that need next to no room for themselves.
I bought one of these for my note 3 and even though it did give it some weight and thickness, the battery cover was thick enough that the camera lens would not come in contact when places on a flat surface which was nice.

That is the wireless charging cover of the Alpha right? Can you tell me if it has magnets in it for alignment? I'm trying to build a car dock with magnetic attachment like the Nexus 5 and wonder if this cover for the Alpha would let me do that.

And it works? I emailed Samsung and they told me there are no qi chafgers that work with the Alpha. If youre saying it works I might actually buy it and build a magnetic charger for it so I can dock in my car. Thanks!
They also confirmed thr Alpha has OIS.

It definitely works (using it daily at work) so whoever you talked to has no idea what they're talking about. Wouldn't be the first time honestly.
That wireless charging cover looks super ugly and so doesn't fit the amazing design of the rest of the pone. Not sure what Samsung was thinking when making such a poor looking charging cover.

Thay confirmed OIS,i try to find out anywhere this info but I only find in one US site nowhere else
is it possable that Alpha has OIS
Can you shere this info with us m8
Could you please tell me whether the extra thickness of the cover makes it impossible to fit a case over it? I have in mind a flip case.
Samsung do not yet list a wireless charging back on their web site for the Galaxy Alpha. I wonder if this is a picture of the back for the bigger battery.
I got my official wireless charging back. Unfortunately, it does make the phone slightly thicker which means cases are not going to fit over it. I tried a cheap plastic soft case which I thought would stretch enough to fit but it didn't. So I had better not drop my phone.....
Otherwise, the wireless charging works fine with a Nokia DT desktop charger.

Car holster/Qi charger?

When I got my LG G3 and bought the Qi charging backplate for it, I immediately bought this charging mount for my car. With the LG, it worked perfectly. Unfortunately, the coils in the charger are too low for the Turbo 2 to get a charge (even though the charger itself lights up as if the phone is charging, I'm still experiencing battery drain, and the phone doesn't believe it's charging). If I put the phone in upside down, the phone charges, but then the arms of the holster are pressed against the side buttons.
Anyone have a better car Qi charging solution for the Turbo?

How far out does the arm extend? The Choetech came straight up from the suction cup base, and I have to reach forward a bit to reach the phone - enough so that it feels dangerous while driving on the highway.
I did manage to get the Choetech to start charging the phone by positioning the phone a little higher than normal in the holster, then moving it down, but if the iOttie charges easily from the default position I might consider that if I get some Amazon gift cards this year.

It extends for about 1.5 inches, far enough to be where I want it to be at. The lower supporting fork is adjustable. It can move up and down. So I was able to align wireless charging logo of the phone with the coils of the holder. Now I don't have to worry about the position of the phone when it is in the holder. I have two of them, for my wife and myself. And we are both satisfied. There are some videos on that Amazon page about this product. You can check them out.

Thanks for describing this -- I had been concerned about getting something like this precisely because I was worried about positioning so that 1) the coils would line up with the phone's charging "sweet spot" and 2) the side buttons wouldn't be blocked. Have the bottom support adjustable addresses that beautifully.

Likewise. Also, the arm extending out slightly puts the phone closer to me, and on my car that would make it as close as the vent clip on the Choetech was.

This is my first phone with wireless charging.
Could someone let me know why QI charging in a car would be preferable to cradle with a built in charger.
I have been using Pro Clip car docks for the last 5 years (3 phones and 2 SUVs) and am happy with them.
I disassembled the USB charger portion of my dock for my old Note3 while I wait for my backordered DT2 cradle to come.
If Qi is better I can cancel my order and get something different.
I see no drain while running Waze and listening to Audio Books though bluetooth. Additionally I mount an NFC tag on there to activate phone actions when I dock my phone.
The charger is hard wired to my car and the mounting system has been rock solid and allows for my Amateur Radio faceplate to be mounted within easy reach right below the phone dock.
On the other hand, the drop in dock doesn't work with a case but they do have other options for universal mounts.

After reading this thread weeks ago, I got this car mount. It is excellent. Works flawlessly and I love not having to connect a cord every time I get in the truck. The push on and one touch release is smooth too.
I was hoping to move from my old window mount spot to the center console but the gap wasn't wide enough for the extra dash mount pad. It is just barely wide enough for the regular suction mount but it doesn't form a complete seal and fell when I tried it. Still the window mount has worked for me for years and this mount comes out a little further than my old bionic mount so that's a big plus.
