Is the Amazfit Smartwatch worth buying? - Amazfit

Hi!
I have been considering the Amazfit smart watch to be my first smartwatch for a while now. Is it any good? How is the GPS accuracy?
Br J

Everything looks great. Except, you have to deal with transflective technology that will not display like ips or amoled.
Sent from my MI MAX

For the watch, transreflective display is better. Always on and battery friendly.
About worth buying. I replaced Garmin Vivoactive HR with Amazfit

In fact, GPS accuracy still has some problems, someones drift away from the route, or the distance is shorter or longer... Mine now gots the first problem but not so far and acceptable

Aaah so that is why it looks so dull. Thought it was just ppls pictures on the watch that was bad. Ok that is a bummer but I guess you cant get it all. The amoled screens on some watches looks so good but then they have much shorter battery life.

Ok that is not good to hear, going to use it as my running watch. How much does it differ?

Well, Amazfit display looks way, way better than Vivoactive HR. For me looks dull when people are wearing watches with display turned off

I think its screen is just as the normal watch, the screen as bright when outdoor.

You will love your watch, that's for sure!
I have mine since the beginning of January, and although it has a few bugs, but it has so many options, and this always on display is one of the best you can get. This is an outdoor watch, so it has to be well readable under direct sunlight, and it is! Indoors it's just OK.
AMOLED displays are awesome, my Galaxy Note 4 has the best display I've ever seen personally (I know S7-S8's display is better, but I love being able to replace the battery of my phone, plus the IR blaster to use it as a remote control), but they will burn in with time, which means you CAN have your Gear S3's display always on, but it will degrade with time, and it consumes a lot more battery than this transflective display.
About Amazfit: yeah, it really has over 30 hours of GPS time, which is awesome! My previous watch was a Polar M400, and I had to recharge it after 5-6 hours of GPS use. As I always walk, (almost) never run, the accuracy of the GPS is pretty cool for me (the difference between my Note 4's GPS and the Amazfit's is like 50-100m / 10km; the Amazfit measures the distance a bit shorter than it is).

One worse thing about Amazfit I am not satisfied untill now that is the GPS drifted away from the route, I think its not the GPS problem because the GPS track is quite right but it locates on the wrong point (maybe because the code, the map scale...or something like that) I am the runner and cyclist also so thats the most important thing I need from the watch. One more thing, why isnt the screen backlight on when the notification comes? Could it be fixed by the code?

Of course, notification backlight can be easily fixed by the code.
One line to turn it on with notification, one to turn it off when notification disappear. But, with a lot of notifications/lights on, will impact battery life.
Better way is to check ambient light sensor before turning light on, still not complicated to implement and will save battery even ambient light drains some.
Another implementation would be to turn light on only if needed (ambient sensor) and user makes a gesture to take a look. Gesture is already supported and turnings light on, so again just few lines of the code.
All those options should be possible to configure in the settings. Not all users want to turn light on for every notification (me).
P.S.
Amazfit team, if you're reading, see how many ideas you can just pick up from comunity

I just enable notification for text messages, email and phone call because thats important and need quick responding.
Skype at work, or fb messenger push alot but not important so I turn them off.
Gesture is good but not work well, so I just use setting 'Awake - When Unlocked', and want to quick look at notifications when i am in dark (outside at night, cinema...)

Yes, I think is a glitch (or maybe to have cool animation?!). It's like old screen remained in the buffer, quickly showed and then refreshed with the current. I didn't even notice until you asked.
About your original question before you edited, in idle watch is updating screen every minute.
Devs did excellent job with batter optimization. Instead of draining battery every second, now is draining 60 times less often. They did couple of other battery tricks, like auto airplane mode, sport mode, etc.

Me too, still many things should/could be done. Depends how much effort Huami will put into software development. Opening source or releasing SDK would be great for everyone.
I've started with Polar chest strap (the best HRM), then two different Mio products, Basis, Garmin and now Amazfit. So far, Amazfit has the best look, display, smartwatch features (still a lot can be added) and still one of the best battery life. GPS accuracy is good enough (as far I remember, when I compared, Garmin and Amazfit were very close), HRM also good enough. But app is probably the worst of all I had. Without Mi Fit, no info about any data collected. And Mi Fit is not great either. No web at all, except Strava. Garmin has the best app and web even I didn't use the web except few times at beginning.
So all in all, hardware has great potential. Firmware is also very good but rest is just fundamental.

Your words all are correctly, I had time using Garmin watch, it has prefectly accuracy, good phone app and website also, but if you want to get a nice-look Garmin watch you must pay alot.

And even if you pay such price, you will still get retro look, low res display and no touch screen. They are targeting professionals but I'm not pro. Just casual user who likes to track sport activity, have some goals, notifications and of course nerd toy to play with

Screen too bright? ! I have the SOLUTION. **Update** 12/13 4pm EST

There's an app called.
SCREEN FILTER.
In the app market. You have to get it. You can even choose custom settings depending on your night time eyeball needs.

Hope it helps you as much as its helped me. I was going blind.

Some more info:
App puts a matt screen (that is adjustable depending on need) over your current screen regardless of what you have on there. It is an app that is INDEPENDENT of your phone's brightness control. (THIS IS Absolutely !!!! $$$$$$)
Second, IT IS FREE!!!!!!!

LOL u guys must be old.. or vampires... I love the amoled brightness....
This is so great, I can use my phone at night now! Just need a scheduler to turn it on past midnight hehe
hows battery life with this???
Re: Posts pertaining to battery life.
*I use this app exclusively at night with all the lights off. meaning, I'm vampiring playing Angry Birds, NOT SLEEPING. LOL Hahahaha... I should be in bed.
Conclusory: I am IN BED !!! It's just that I'm not sleeping.
I know, i know... long winded answer to your question.
The bottom line is this-> I don't have the screen filter on enough to know whether it makes a difference in battery life. My guess* is that YES it does make a difference. The reflective light that is emitted from the screen is a lot dimmer when the app is ON.
Common sense would say : Yes this app does save battery. I only say yes (cautiously) because our SAMOLED screens are not conventional Emissive LCDs whereby light is shown from behind it. Each pixel is in fact turned On/Off. So having a resulting dimmer screen than the factory pre-set at the lowest setting leads me to believe that the pixels are emitting lower levels of light. This is of course, just a conjecture.
So, my ultimate answer is: Why not just try it out and see if you like it/helps you/reduces battery usage?
Answer may not be satisfactory to your liking, but what do you have to lose? Just try it out.
Cheers.
*Sigh* caught me again. Yah, you can call me grampy. I get it all the time.

This is excellent. First brightness app that actually works in the browser! And I think I've tried them all.
Me too. Me too!!! I was about ready to wear sunglasses while going to sleep. I have this really nice pair that I get from my eye doctor (I'm older than she is). It's a roll-up style piece of plastic that just sits on your eyes. It is an excellent product for people coming out of full blown eye exams that require pupil dilation.

This thread is no longer about dimming the screen, it is about procuring these rollup sunglasses.
EDIT: After googling "rollup sunglasses," I've come to realize that cheap plastic comprise the majority of them. Considering that plastic is a generic term for any of a large group of polymers, if anyone can recommend rollups made from a better plastic, I'd appreciate the info.

Thanks for the tip. I'd rather have the option to change on the fly though. Auto anything just bothers me when there's so much interaction with apps/games/schedules/emails/ the list goes on. But thank you nonetheless.
Haha. Fruit Rollup sunglasses. Great production like I said. Thing is, I know a little about plastics and coatings. Most of the technology behind optical correction lenses is premised under the theory that the lenses are rigid. Having other materials/coatings/technology in rollup lenses doesn't seem to be workable without serious degradation to optical clarity or longevity.
But I will be on the lookout. If I find anything, I will let you know.
On a sidenote. Don't threadjack!!! Okay, okay, I concede, I brought up the pictures first, so I am to blame.

Yup, these are what I usually get at the nicer optometrists. Haven't gotten anything but a "good luck" from any Lenscrafters.
Finals has my sleep schedule completely flipped the past week so I've been using this app nonstop at night and can attest that under Settings>About Phone>Battery Usage the display has been using a smaller portion of my battery than before, but not by much (~85% to 80% with filter at ~50%).
There is an issue inherent to OLED screens (I think). Banding becomes very apparent at lower brightness, which I believe is because the diode is then set to display a smaller range of shades since this range may be tied to brightness. This isn't an issue with LCDs as the panel in them would not be affected by brightness, which is supplied by a white LED underneath the panel.
Fortunately, that's a compromise I'm willing to make for nighttime use. Does anyone know of a way to lower the brightness on the capacitive buttons? They're a LOT brighter than the screen at the setting I use. I could even stand to turn them off completely. Doubt any Vibrant user would forget where/what the buttons are after a day of use.

GPS performance?

There are two vids posted on Youtube showing GPS tests. Neither one shows what I consider good accuracy.
Here's the outside test. If you watch closely the accuracy fluctuates between 6 and 28 meters, and is pretty unstable.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SHJ6wFi7H8
6m is ok, though not great, but 28m is pretty bad. And the jumping around is disconcerting.
In this one it never gets below about 111ft, which is also quite bad:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuCZ75r2GZY
It is performed inside, but I typically get under 30ft inside with my Galaxy S. I understand "inside" is variable depending on the type of structure, but he's getting a lock on at least 8 sats, 6 with SNR's in the 20's, so the accuracy should be decent.
I'm hoping in both cases the videos are just too short and they would settle down within a minute or so with good, stable accuracy, but this preliminary sample is not as good as I was hoping for.
Any comments from current S2 owners?
Thanks.

Like you said, indoors is not the the best place to test.
Also the accuracy estimate is just that. It gives you possible error.
My Nexus S accuracy within 78 feet but its bang on with location in map ( hell it shows me even on the right side of the road. ).
The best way to test stationary GPS accuracy is to go to easy to recognize outdoor location and then try to get a lock.
Even with 30 meter accuracy in Google Map, usually GPS shows my exact position.
Do a tracking while driving and see how accurate the navigation is .
Haven't done a "proper" test yet but having used navigation a couple of times now I can say that it's far quicker and more reliable than my ancient SGS1. There was also an engadget article about GPS performance -

Yes, but this margin of error is a very imortant piece of data (for any kind of measurement, really), that's vitally important for the further processing of the location data. As long as the accuracy data is correct any algorithms can safely assume you really are inside a certain radius. If it isn't the location data is basically worthless. (The "but it's spot on anyway" argument only works if you already know exactly where you are, but then the GPS is sort of a moot point.)
Naturally it's better to err on the side of caution and assume slightly worse than calculated accuracy, but on the other hand a 20 m radius is pretty much worthless for a lot of applications.
That's exactly why proper tests should be done - before you test each phone vs a reference GPS and a few landmarks with known high precision coordinates you can't even tell if the accuracy reading the phone's GPS gives is accurate in itself. It's entirely possible that LG and HTC fudge their numbers just to look good, while Samsung is a bit over-cautious, but we don't know that and I like to know things.
We just don't have enough data yet to conclude Samsung has fixed the GPS problems.
The two videos I linked are not very impressive. And the Endgadget test is hard to judge. He says it's "pretty close" in locating him on the map, but we can't tell what that means, 20ft, 60ft? The track log posted by Dombledore is also hard to judge without knowing his actual track.
Part of the problem in testing this is even with my S sometimes it works great, and then the next time it's way off. Getting consistent quick locks, and high accuracy will tell the tale. For driving, geocaching and track logging this is a critical function. If the S2 isn't a major improvement over the S it will be a no-go for many.
Thanks in advance for any additional updates.

So? ten chars...
Well i use mine 4-5 times a week hour to two each time for running, using both runkeeper and runstar at the same time, my route never touches a road, up over hills, through a large forest, the gps signal is spot on, better than my old hd2, iphone4 and samsung galaxy s put together, very accurate no nasty spikes
Before you complain about GPS accuracy. So yes, it sounds about right for 20m. It is definitely an improvement over the original 100m.
highest quality signal was reserved for military use, and the signal available for civilian use was intentionally degraded ("Selective Availability", SA). This changed with President Bill Clinton ordering Selective Availability to be turned off at midnight May 1, 2000, improving the precision of civilian GPS from 100 meters (about 300 feet) to 20 meters (about 65 feet).

The accuracy increases if you turn on DATA with your 3G signal. It also improves the time used for initial gps lock.

Gear Fit Review - Thoughts and Observations here

A surprise came in the mail today from AT&T. I had pre-ordered the fit back in March and it has finally arrived, and even earlier than the expected launch date.
Unboxing:
First impressions:
The gear fit is very light, and comfortable to wear. The design is something that I can appreciate more than its big brother the gear 2/Neo. The display is vibrant and the picture quality is what you would expect from a AMOLED display. The heart rate monitor works well, I had it over my wrist bone at first so it couldn't see me vein to get a reading since it uses infrared to count your BPM. I enjoy the simplicity of the design more than some other smart watches/fitness bands because its just a simple layout with one physical button and a touch screen. This is more aimed at the fitness side of things than the everyday smartwatch, but that doesn't mean its not a great device. Don't forget that this product is meant to compete more with items such as the fitbit, jawbone and other fitness trackers but with added functionality. Samsung is also releasing their other fitness product the S Band which is more on par with the two mentioned above, but the fit could be seen as a premium version of these rather than a new category in general. I don't see the fit complete with the Polaris line of products in terms of monitoring because its only meant for Samsung devices currently. Overall I am happy with it, and I will update this with more details, images and answer any questions that you guys have.
Hopefully Samsung will post prices and make the other colored bands available for people to buy on the official launch but these days who knows.
Pictures Part 1:
Day 1
Update 1:
I have been using this device for about 6 hours messing around with the settings and seeing what works for me. The battery was at 63% when I started and is now at 55%. Keep in mind that I have had the screen on a lot, along with trying out the gesture to wake which is a little too sensitive. If you use the gesture wake the display will turn on when you lift your arm up (a battery killer obviously) The notifications do push instantly to the device and you can select any of your apps to push out their notifications to the fit. The pedometer also works well and you can pause it so you are counting steps by moving around at your desk or in your car. The RTOS is very simple and it works much better than the gear 2 in terms of functionality. The band is very comfortable and the clasp is secure enough so you don't have to worry. There is also a feature you can enable where your phone will beep if you walk about 25ish feet away from the fit which works also on the fit in the form a vibration that alerts you. The APK for the Gear Fit Manager fromt he S5 does work (I'm running it on my Note 3 N900A) with 4.4.2 without any problems so far. The heart rate monitor is very fast now that I know what to do. (The screen shows you a reminder of how to do it). A nice feature that I was not aware of until I tried it out was the media control. I can adjust my phones volume, pause/play and change the track from the watch which is convenient when you are working out. It has been pouring down rain here all day and I am glad that the fit is IP67 water resistant or I would have a dead device. So far my impressions are that this is a great device, its light weight, comfortable and most importantly functional. I will add more pictures soon.
Update 2:
Brightness and different situations:
The display can be adjusted from brightnesses of 1 to 6 but since there is not light sensor this must be done manually through the settings either via the app or on the device itself. I will take a picture of it underwater for you to see, but outdoors the 5-6 brightness should be plenty depending on how bright it is outside. I usually leave it at the 3-4 setting and I'm able to read the display just fine. When I'm inside for a while I usually turn it to the 1-3 range depending on the lighting. I only adjust it if I really need to, usually a standard of 3-4 brightness will be sufficient for most people's daily activities.
Also the charging cradle if you call it that snaps on and off with less effort that plugging in a micro usb. As mentioned in the earlier posts I charged it last night 4/7 so I could do an accurate test from a full battery.
Pictures Part 2:
Device display at setting 1 (my desk isn't the brightest place in the world at night, ignore the glare from my lamp):
Battery life after 1 day of use starting from 0700. I had my gmail, sms, calls, and google now notifications being pushed to the device and I used the pedometer for a hour or so to try it out today. Keep in mind with every notification the display turns on. I have it set up so it this way but you can change this to only turn on for only high priority notifications and it also vibrates to alert you for each notification. The battery seems impressive so far as you can see from the picture below. I would classify toda's use as light to moderate because of the numerous notifications that I received and checking my heart rate, coupled with the pedometer. I will be going for a hike, walk, or bike ride tomorrow to test out a longer use of the fitness functionality vs its impact on the battery.
Underwater Display images: (yes that is a blendtec and no I'm not going to blend it like "will it blend") It was a clear container that was easy to get a image of the fit rather than in my sink. The slight blue in the second image was due to my Note 3's camera. The first image is a better depiction of what it looks like. As you can see there is almost no visible distortion which is nice for those of you who choose to use it in the water.
Pictures Part 3
Day 2:
After a second day of use here are some updates. The S Health App will not sync my workouts or pedometer from the fit which is a little annoying. This could be because I am running the leaked S5 apps and there could be an update that I don't have. This should be fixed when the device officially launches this friday. The battery has gone down a bit more it lost about 8-10% while I was sleeping but I did leave it connected via bluetooth to my phone. I also used it to count my steps for my walking between classes to see how far I walk out of curiosity. I also went on a 1-2 mile "hike" on some trails. The battery is at about 65% currently which still is not bad after 2 full days of use. I will keep the updates coming for the battery until it actually dies.
Side note: I have heard that Samsung also added in a sleep monitor option in the update for the gear fit. I hope it shows up soon because I can't find a way to update the device. There is no option in my app as you will see from my pictures down below. I also forgot to charge my phone last night so its almost dead anyway. Kies 3 does not find the device when I briefly plugged it in via usb to my pc. The battery stayed at the same % for those of you who were wondering any charging by checking for software updates was negligible. Below I have provided screen shots of the various menus on the fit and what some controls look like. If you have any requests feel free to let me know and I will post more pictures.
The glare is in the pictures is from my camera, and my oily fingers becuase I didn't wipe it off. until I realized the photos look a little bad. Thats a day of use and dirt...
Pictures Part 4:
Time is for the battery life reference
Volume control
Settings Menu
Here is a screenshot of where the "software update" icon should be. As you can see there is no option to update it in the S5 APK.
Day 3:
The app was offically released via the Samsung App Store. I downloaded it and updated my fit to the new software. Here is a breakdown of the 'new' added features that I have noticed since the pre-official launch software:
New clock faces for landscape and portrait
Sleep tracker
Pin lock
Portrait mode (you have to manually rotate it via the settings menu)
Customize icon location on device (left or right of the home screen clock)
Redesigned app
It is now day 3 and the fit is still clinging to life. The majority of battery life dissipates during the idle time at night. I am currently at 38% battery life after 3 days of moderate use. I have kept my rightness at the 2-3 range unless I am indoors in which case I usually change it to 1 to save power when I don't need it. I keep the pedometer running all day, and the bluetooth on with weather updates on the home screen every 3 hours. I also had to leave it on during its update which took about 3-5 minutes of the display being constantly on. I am going to try to use the sleep mode tonight to see how well it works (and so you can see how little that I sleep...). I enjoy using the portrait mode, it feels more natural even with the narrow display, but it depends on what I am doing. Anyway here are some more pictures
Pictures 5:
Pictures Part 6:
Reading emails/notifications in landscape and portrait modes
App Pictures:
Day 4:
I managed to get another solid day of use out of the fit. It popped up with a battery alert around 1600 yesterday when it was at about 15% battery. The fit managed to last until just a couple of minutes ago. I'm happy with the battery life being just over 4 days for what I use it for (everyones battery life many very based on use). I am also posting picture of the sleep tracker so you can see what it looks like. I enjoy using the portrait mode more than the landscape, it is a little weird to look at because its so narrow, but you get used to it.
Pictures 7:
Before it died
Update 5/11
I know its been a while since I updated the OP. I have been very busy with finals (engineering is always fun) and I'm moving in a few days. I have now been using the fit for over a month and I'm still happy with it. My battery has averaged about 5 days per charge with the longest at 7 days and shortest being 3 days. I have noticed a small update to the app at least twice which is good that Samsung is updating it.
The bad:
The s health app doesn't sync well with the fit which is disappointing. The hiking mode only measures your workout by altitude rather than how other app account for that and distance and factor in how many calories you burn. (Even though no device is truly accurate)
Other than those two complaints I use the fit daily as a watch and if I got on a hike or walk with my wife. I hope that Samsung will release the other bands for it soon. I have had no issues with the band coming off as some other people had stated. If you have this problem there is a simple fix. Take a small black hair rubber band (this kind woman use in their hair) which can be purchased for 2$ for a couple hundred of them and put it on your fits band. This week prevent it from falling off even if it does come undone. I will post a picture of you want. I never use it but it seemed like a good idea to address the issue.
Lastly if anyone has questions I will be happy to answer them the nest that I can. I will begin posting more regularly again one I get settled into my new place in the coming week or two. I still go to school full time in the summer (I want to graduate faster since I'm already old for a Jr) so with that in mind thank you to everyone who found this helpful and thanks me.
P.s. My thoughts are still scattered due to everything going on so I will look over this post when I get home to make sure it makes sense.
do you know if it works with any Android phone, or only with Samsung's smartphones?

Currently it only works with Samsung devices I believe there are 14 of them with compatibility. I'm not certain about this but MAYBE if you root a device and install the APK for the gear fit it COULD work. Has anyone tried this?
I'm very likely to pick one up when they're available in stores.

I know ATT is still taking pre-orders. Talked to them today and they said they'd be selling them in store later this month.
Nice! :good:
Interested how you find the device.
I preordered it on 3/20. I spoke with ATT and they said that stores should be receiving them for the Friday launch but there is not gurrantee . I charged my battery fully last night so I could see how long it would actually last from a full charge under normal use. I will part nighty updates with what I used it for and the battery pwrcentage . There will also be a software update soon according to Sam mobile. You will be able to change the screen orientation, which Iknow was a big complaint for some people. The article can be found here

do you have to always keep the bluetooth on ? i would want to use it as just a watch at times..
Well in order to connect or to the phone bluetooth needs to be on. If it's off it still works as a watch and pedometer just without pushing notifications.
Edit: to answer your question I airways keep the Bluetooth on.
I verified that everything does work (which it should) except data/phone dependent features i.e.: weather, any kind of notifications, SMS, S Health goals, missed calls etc. I hope the update gets pushed out soon, but I have no idea how to check for it. There is no option for updates in the app or on the device, but then again I'm running the S5's extracted apk.

I'm interested in the gear fit too.
I saw that you have a spigen screen protector as well. Can you put some light on its efficiency like colors after being under water, clarity outdoor/indoor,etc. That would be really helpful.

There is no distortion of any colors due to the screen protector in any of those situations that I can see. Everything seems to be as clear as a device without a screen protector. I'm sure if you look extremely close you could probably find a very very minimal amount of distortion/clarity but I can't see any myself. I am not a fan of the Spigen screen protector because its more inline with the Zagg screen protectors. This means that it has a gloss to it even though it appears matte when you have it in its packaging. The feel of it is similar to the Zagg with a almost rubber like friction at first after you apply it, but it dissipated after I cleaned it with some of my lense cleaner. I have used it in the heavy rain we have been experiencing without any issues of water getting under it or limited visibility. I just threw the device in my sink full of water and the protector looks the same as it does now. There does not appear to be any distortion, or at least no noticeable distortion. It's much harder to tell because of the screen size, but overall I am happy with it. It's definitely no tempered glass protector quality but it does the job for the Gear Fit. This is my first Spigen non-glass screen protector so I'm not sure how their regular ones are compared to this.
Wow. Thank you so much for giving a more in-depth analysis.
I also pre-ordered the Fit via amazon. Wasn't sure which screen protector to buy. Hope would go with Spigen as there is no better choice other than this.

Yeah there is just the Spigen and I believe Skinomi? I think that both are about the same material wise so there shouldn't really be a difference.
I can't wait for the update that allows portrait mode. I can confirm that its not shipping with the update mentioned earlier we will see what happens.

I'm probably answering my own questions already but does this gear fit have a calorie intake measure? Is this watch viable for going to the gym purposes?
I don't see any info about the gear fit recording calorie intake and it says heart rate sensor and not monitor which it probably won't constantly read your heart rate as you work out (oppose to the polar fitness watches)
You input your information via the S Health app so yes it can do calories intake and burn but only for 4 different activities at the moment. These include running, walking, hiking and biking. I believe that more will be added such as strength training soon.

I work for Samsung. They should be in every Best Buy friday. They also work with the Pro series tablets and the upcoming Galaxy series 4 tablets if anyone is wondering. ip67 rating essentially is 3 feet of water for up to 30 minutes.

My goodbye.

Just wanted to stop in and thank all of you for all the amazing support given by you guys in this forum. This isn't a bashing forum to say "I'm going to a different phone because this phone now sucks" or anything like that. This is still an amazing phone, I just decided that I wanted to upgrade for more features and a better (faster) camera since I have a 2 year old brother who I am constantly taking photos of. Again, thanks for all the amazing developers and other users who have answered my questions without hesitation, I wish the best for you all! On to the Galaxy S5 thread it is for me!

I have, however moved (when it's delivered tonorow) to the Z2. I don't know why I have fallen in love with it, but I have.
On the other side, the Z2 is going to have to be an amazing phone to live up to the G2. Never ever ever ever, would I have thought I would own an LG phone, but wow, it is truly amazing!!!!!!!!!!! Best phone I have ever owned!!!!

I had the GS3 (best phone I had before the G2) and TouchWiz never bothered me since I immediately installed Nova Launcher. In fact I had the original Galaxy, the G2 and the G3. And I had custom launchers on all of them. I don't think TouchWiz is either a make or break decision.

While all the comparisons I've seen were somewhat unfair, a rooted tweaked g2 vs a stock s5...but in those comparisons, the g2 comes out on top. Be interesting to see a vs between the two phones when they're both at there best

Alright, quick review now that I've been using it for 2 days.
*please note this is purely out of the box experience on both phones, just to keep it fair.*
Camera: holy hell. The s5 camera is amazing. To me it just blows the G2 camera out of the water. So much faster auto focus, brighter & more accurate colors, instant shutter instead of having to hold the phone still for a second or two every time you slightly move the phone. Plus, all the camera features are amazing. Especially the selective focus shots. Looks extremely professional.
Responsiveness: once again, this is going to the galaxy. Everything seems to snap more in this phone, as if every app were made for it. Even using chrome browser feels like a day and night difference. The zoom is the smoothest that I have seen on any phone. This holds true with everything from gesture typing to just scrolling the home screen. That snapdragon 801 is a beast.
Battery: of course the G2 kills the S5 in this field. The 2800 mAh battery just doesn't stand a chance. Especially with the brightness of the superAmoled+ screen. I have yet to be able to get a whole day of heavy use out of it like I was the G2, but I expected this going in. The phone does a really good job of putting itself into deep sleep though. I am doing nothing to conserve battery (as usual), I have twitter, Facebook, Instagram, vine, ifunny, etc installed, so I was surprised when I realized that the phone was only dropping around 1%/hr with the screen off. But, I have also only had the phone 2 days, things are still breaking in. If anything changes I will come back and edit this.
Display: the display on the S5 is amazing. Holding the G2 side by side the resolution itself looks almost identical, however, the G2 does appear to show whites more accurate while the S5 displays black more accurate due to the magic going on in the amoLED display.
Gimmicks:
-fingerprint scanner: this one was by far the most frustrating to me. The fingerprint scanner was one thing that really caught my attention about this phone. Since it's Samsung making it I figured it would be as good or better than my old 5s. Unfortunately, I was wrong. Don't get me wrong, it isn't terrible, it works, it really does; there is just a technique to it that you have to teach yourself in order to do it one handed (the scanner is designed to be used two handed, one hand holding the phone with the finger on the other hand being scanned.) Now that I have figured out how to do it, I am proud to say that I can successfully use the scanner 95% of the time.
-IP67:I have not got to test this thing out against dirt yet (waiting until I go dirt bike riding again) but you best believe that within 4 hours of the beauty coming in the mail I was texting people in the shower. It really works! I was worried because the aux port is left open, but somehow they have managed to make it work! I have run it under a stream of water from the sink to wash the screen off (which, by the way, works wonders!) And I believe I got some water in the aux jack or something because the auxiliary did go a little faulty for about 30 minutes, but it seemed to fix itself!
Touchwiz:my only gripe about touchwiz this time around is that it looks cartoony to me, almost like a child's toy. The DPI definitely needs to be dropped a bit, that would make this display amazing. Everything else is fine. I love the Samsung "Gimmicks". The multi window, gestures, etc. work great as usual.
Final: The S5 is a great phone, it's lighter, it's faster (just enough to be noticeable), the camera is about as good as it gets on a smartphone, and it can read fingerprints and take a dive. If none of this matters to you, there is no logic in you purchasing the S5. But, if you are in need of a better camera or a dust and waterproof phone, you can't go wrong with the S5!

You have to know that these tests are done with pre-release firmware often, and G2 at least were suffering a bit from wakelocks at start. If they did a test now with KitKat it would blow the old value away, especially enduring.

I have never once in my life gotten as good battery life from Samsung phones, that are reported in tests. They always have some software crap that eats battery on the background and you can't get rid of it without rooting and that in turn flags Knox. Some friends who bought the S5 are saying the same - they have issues with the battery.
This is why I absolutely never trust battery tests unless they are done be real users and in real life for an extended period of time.

Lol, thats understandable. They do it in ideal conditions, ie excellent signal, 50% Brightness, no draining apps etc. Also AMOLED kills battery on web due to all white background as all sub pixels are needed for white. AMOLED uses more battery than LCD in such conditions by +100% or more. Not to mention at full brighness, and the screen burn to top it off after a few months which I have seen.

Why the 360?

Hi guys,
I am having some problems with my Huawei Watch, so I am thinking of exchanging it for a Moto 360 2nd gen. So I thought it would be good to hear from you, what made you choose the 360 over the Huawei watch when you picked yours up?
For me, I went first with the Huawei mostly because of the full circle. But after all the problems people (including me) are having with the screen, maybe the flat tyre is a small price to pay.
I'd like to hear your opinion on this. Why the moto 360?
Thanks!
I have both. Since bestbuy didn't have them on display, I ordered a Huawei from Amazon and grabbed a moto from best buy locally. I've had the moto since Sunday and just received the Huawei today. I have the original moto too.
Some quick initial thoughts :
I have the black versions with black link bands for both. Even though they are the same height on paper, the moto looks and feels like it's thinner due to the case design. The lugs on the moto allow it to sit flatter on my arm. And I have the 46mm moto for reference. Also with the glass being above the bezel the moto is easier to swipe, IMO.
Screen is noticeably larger on the moto. But doesn't feel too big. I never considered the original big either but this one does look and feel more proportional; that is the band and body seem to match up better. The side button on the moto is less squishy and feels better.
I immediately noticed the Huawei's red screen issue during boot up in a dark room and on other black screens. Aside from that, the screen is great. More crisp given the higher dpi.
The light sensor on the moto is great. Down in my man cave watching tv in the dark the moto works wonders. The Huawei, even on 3, is still stupidly bright in a dark room especially if there is a white notification card or your watch face is white.
The low res pixelated ambient screen on the moto is my only significant complaint so far. Some faces look horrid. Sky master for example, looks great on the Huawei, but on the moto the tick marks are very messy in low res. I really hope a future update can address that or at least make it an option to change.
So far, I've been less impressed with the Huawei that I thought I would be. All the reviews made it sound like a killer watch but so far im leaning toward keeping the moto.

Thank you Brian! Awesome post!
I actually don't mind the red tint on the HW screen, but I worry it might cause problems over time (like red sub pixel burn in for instance). And I don't know how well Huawei would deal with this.
Let me ask you something since you have them both: I know that the HW has greater ppi, but did you notice that it's got a pentile matrix like AMOLED phones (the subpixel matrix is not a grid)? Therefore every pixel is missing a subpixel. I don't know how sensitive you are for this, but for me it's very annoying. So even though the 360 has a theoretically lower res screen, it may look better because of the subpixel arrangement (in LCD displays usually the matrix is a grid, and every pixel has indeed 3 subpixels, there is no sharing subpixels).
Any thoughts on that?
And thank you again for sharing your experience.

This has been exactly the impressions I have had - even though I have never seen either of these 'in the flesh'. From all the reviews and videos, it seems clear that the Moto 360 sits much more neatly on the wrist even though most people seem to say the Huawei is marginally thinner (on specs, not visual perception). I have been wrestling with which one to get, but I'm slowly getting to 75%+ in favour of the Moto 360 42mm (small wrists here).
These have been my thoughts on the pros and cons of each - just my perceptions of what I've seen and read online, obviously I may be totally wrong about some of these!
Moto 360 Pros:
- Wireless charging, any Qi charger will work
- Apparent Size
- Leather strap seems to have more holes for different sized wrists
- Ambient light sensor
- Mic placement and sensitivity
- Price
- Stock faces seem nicer, more customisable
- Standard straps (20mm or 22mm)
- Vibration stronger?
- Angled lugs
- No obstructions to finger swiping (screen flush with bezel)
Moto Cons:
- The so called 'flat tire' (doesn't really bother me)
- LCD screen (not sure if this is a pro or con - seems better for bright sunlight?)
- Edge bevel on the glass? (Annoys some people, some think it adds to the look)
- Ambient mode blocky, and possible software issue: https://forums.motorola.com/posts/1a5cbb0aa8
Huawei Pros:
- AMOLED screen
- Full circle screen
- Ambient mode better
- Sapphire crystal
Huawei Cons:
- Apparent Size
- Price
- Leather strap seems to have less holes for different sized wrists
- Red screen tint issue (http://forum.xda-developers.com/huawei-watch/general/huawei-screen-red-tint-issue-t3214209)
- Mic placement issue, people report that it doesn't pick up voice consistently (https://youtu.be/H_ISBzY96M0?t=5m43s)
- Weak vibration?
- Stock faces (don't appeal to me as much as the Moto ones)
- Raised bezel may interfere with finger swipes
- Non standard straps (18mm straps will fit, but the supplied strap itself is 22mm with 18mm between the lugs)
- Proprietary wired charger seems a bit fiddly, $40 for a replacement
- Straight lugs, rather than angled to fit around the wrist - makes them appear to 'wing' over small wrists
In particular, these two reviews have swayed my opinion even more in favour of the Moto 360:

EDIT: Not interested in any of the fitness/step counting/heart rate stuff by the way - that's why none of that is mentioned in my list

no, the pentile doesnt bother me and honestly its never been something ive been bothered by. i can see it in blownup screen shots and if i stick my eye super close to a device but in normal use, i cant tell. the sharpness (not counting the ambient low-res junk on the moto) is in favor of the huawei, though only slightly so. in normal usage at arms length its a non-issue. and i would bet if you had the smaller 42mm moto, you would be hard pressed to notice any difference.
to re-touch on the awesomeness of moto's light sensor, last night the huawei was bothering the wife while we watched TV because it was too damn bright whenever it lit up due to notification or arm movement. i ended up just putting it in theater mode all night.

Hi Brian - thanks for your insights! It's great that you have access to both, I can imagine there are quite a few people who would have some questions for you!
Could you comment on the mic sensitivity for each of these watches. How close you have to hold them to your mouth, how reliably they pick you up etc? How do they compare to using 'OK Google' on a phone? For example, my Note 4 seems to pick me up and understand exactly what I say almost without fail. Thanks.
I don't own the Huawei but I did own a first gen Moto that got broken a few weeks ago. I was deciding on a replacement and finally got the second gen Moto in Black 46mm. Why? Firstly the Huawei is a lot more expensive. It doesn't have inductive charging and I don't like the shape. The Moto is the only truly round smartwatch out there. The LG and the Huawei are strangely shaped watches with round displays. The 8 bit ambient mode on the Moto serioulsy annoyed me at first and showed my favourite watch face as a blurry blocky mess. So I made my own and I think it's quite nice. It shows just enough information and is sufficiently discreet. I don't watch my watch glowing like a light house during meetings. Here's some pics. Sorry about the crappy quality of my phone camera.

just tested some, and the moto is WAY more sensitive to picking up "ok google". with both sitting on the desk in front of me, the moto registered every time when talking at a normal level. i almost had to yell at the huawei. same experience on my arm. the moto picked me up way better. had to talk louder to the huawei. i can see the mic hole on the moto on the left side. not sure where it is on the huawei, i dont see any visible mic holes
Comparison shot. 46mm moto and 42mm Huawei. The moto looks thinner, IMO

Thanks SO much Brian - you're really helping me make my mind up! The speech recognition is pretty important for me, so it looks like I'll definitely be going for the Moto 360 42mm. You mention the mic placement on the Moto - I had noticed this too. It is placed on the left side which, for most people, will mean it is pointing directly at their mouth. However, as far as I'm aware, the Huawei mic is on the back of the watch under the top lug. Strange placement, if that's true. This, the ambient light sensor, and the weak vibration on the Huawei seal the deal for me.
Thanks for the comparison photo too - I think it's the sloped bezel on the Moto that makes it look thinner, even though it is supposedly the same thickness.
EDIT: Always interested in any other insights you have about these two - and, of course, which you ultimately go for.

ah yes, theres the mic, actually mics. looks to be 2 holes. the location aims them away from you, no wonder it has a harder time picking me up.
other thoughts, i posted this in another thread, but the moto has a stronger vibrator. hehe. :silly: if you wear your watch loose, i could see the huawei being more difficult to notice. both sound about the same though

Love that watchface. Would you be able to share a link for that one? My 2nd Gen is being delivered tomorrow to replace my 1st Gen one. I assume you have other downloaded watchfaces for Faceer/Watchmaker for the 1st Gen. How do those ones look on the 2nd Gen since the screen is slightly higher resolution?
Of course I will share. Have a look here:

I don't really notice much difference in the quality of my watch faces (I use WatchMaker the most) in bright mode. In dim mode all of the third party watch faces I use in dim mode are unfortunately horrible with the colours being terribly distorted. Hopefully this will be sorted out with a future update. In the meantime I adapt my favourite faces to show a decent 8 bit dim mode.
Thank you guys for sharing your thoughts and experience.
From my perspective (I am using the Huawei watch for about 5 days now) I don't mind the weaker mic (actually I prefer that the watch just listens to me when I am deliberately talking to it) and the vibration on my HW is strong enough for me (I don't have anything to compare to and this is my first smartwatch, but it's very noticeable IMO, so it's fine for me).
As for the other points raised, I do think that the ambient mode is to bright. I use the simplest stock watch face (I think it's called Elegant) in which the only diference between the ambient mode and the full active watch face is the seconds hand and the date. Some times I have the impression that the ambient mode is brighter than the full watch face when the brightness is set to one... But, on the other hand, the watch face I use looks really good on always on.
And, as some users have reported, I find the accelerometer not very sensitive and, on top of that, the waking up time is kinda slow. So, if you are planing to leave ambient mode off, this is annoying. You have to really raise your wrist up high and then wait a second for the display to come to life. Bothersome...
Now, about that red tint issue, it's horrible on mine. It's really, really red. It glows like crazy for something that's supposed to be pure black. But realistically speaking, I don't see Huawei doing anything about it. It's to subtle to bother (or to be noticed for that matter) most people. And despite being really bad on mine, if someone could guarantee me that this is not going to cause any problems in the future, I could overlook it easily.
I am still struggling to decide if I am gonna ask for a replacement or a refund and go for the 360. I don't know if I can handle that flat tyre...

As an owner of the new Moto 360, I totally agree with all of you, especially the case design of the HW and the vibration made my decision clear. I am happy with the 360 except the ambient mode screen.
On a side note, very nice watch face! did you made, is it possible to share it?
Thanks in advance.

I only made the 8 bit ambient mode part of the face. The original face I found on FaceRepo I believe. The concensus on the usual forums is that it is Ok to modify and distribute other people's work as long as you explicitly state who did the original work. In my case the beautiful watch face work was done by John Feaster. He and he alone deserves the credit for this beautiful watch face. I just adapted it to suit the new Moto.
