VZW LGV20 problem - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yesterday afternoon my V20 fingerprint scanner did not work and unfortunately I had no idea the pattern to unlock. It went through all ten attempts and wiped my entire phone and sd card. I have photos and text messages backed up through Google Photos and VZW cloud BUT some videos didn't load and unfortunately my VZW was at its max so the last ten days of texts were not uploaded.
1. Do I have ANY options to recover the above photos, video and text messages?
2. Is it worth the hassle of doing this even if it's possible?
I appreciate anyone chiming in

Best Backup utility for SMS, Call history only

Hello,
I've done some digging both through XDA Developers and the Internet in General.
I can't seem to find a decent program (or combination) that may effectively backup up only my sms and call history--the only 2 things I keep losing every time I flash. I went on a blitz last week and tried about 4 apps, but non really worked when I tested. Once again, I only care about sms and call history. I pull everything else back in with activesync.

Have you tried PPCPimBackup? It works great, and you can specify what you want backed up.

Have it and love it!

It's the only program I use for backing up and restoring my stuff when flashing.
http://handheld.softpedia.com/progDownload/PIM-Backup-Download-35107.html
I've been using Dashwire.com. I am not saying that it is better than other PIM backup software. I just like the fact that I can access my info from work and from home. I haven't tried it yet but I am hoping that I am able to restore info from one phone to another.
It backs up contacts, pictures, videos, calls, history, contacts, messages, sms, speed dials, ringtones, bookmarks, and voicemail. And is user configurable to backup only the items that you want.
It is in beta right now and it looks like it may want to be a social networking site. It let's you update your status to Twitter and Facebook simultaneously. I'm not into that so much. But the backup and restore process was painless.
After upgrading my ROM, it was a simple download and install of the Dashwire cab, log into my account, and it was as if my phone was never wiped clean. So far that's the program that I am using. I also backed up using SPBbackup and activesync to Outlook. But those were just to cover my bases.
p.s. did I mention free?
Boomstick's right on the money. Using Dashwire you can currently transfer from phone to phone your contacts, web favorites, and speed dials (with plans to include much more). All of your photos, videos, calls, and text messages remain backed up and available in your secure web-based account. If you switch phones, all of your content continues to sync and is backed-up (as long as Dashwire is installed). We make it really easy to search through all of your content too.
Check it out: www.dashwire.com
i use PPCPIMBackup just for my sms and call history, and have gone thru several DCD rom updates with my call and sms history intact.

You should tell us which crappy ones you already tried.
Thanks all--that PIM Backup is PERFECT!!!
And sorry, I don't even remember all the apps I tried--I blew up my PC last week, and had to restore the HD to 3 months ago, so I don't have it.

Slow picture mail, odd.. fix? (sprint)

I have always had slow picture mail on Sprint, it always took several hours to days before the picture mail was received by friends, yet when they sent stuff to me it only ever took a few minutes. I tried updates, patches, changes, etc.. with no results.
A day or so ago I updated to the newer HTC rom (2.01.651.6), and then installed the Gen.Y Manilla R1.5 VGA Cab along with several other tweaks, etc.. that all went well and then I was testing stuff to make sure everything worked.. This is the odd part, when I first sent a test picture, it went through very quickly (and mind you, this is sprint to at&t, not sprint to sprint).. I figured it was a fluke and then took a quick pic, and sent it.. this time 5 minutes passed and nothing, so I sent the same picture again with different wording and it somehow arrived quickly again.. within 30 seconds of sending it..
Now, backtracking, the first time I sent the picture. I went into the picture mail tab, and did new mail.. entered the name, attached some media, etc and sent it... this resulted in a really quick send..
The second one, I was in the album part, selected an image, and selected the mail / picture mail option.. selected the name and wrote a quick note and sent it.. this resulted in a slow mail...
Figuring it was a fluke, or something else, I went into the picture mail tab and did new message, entered the name, attached the exact same image (but manually), wrote something different, and sent it... it was received in less than 30 seconds, and the previous one arrived over 20 minutes after..
Further tests I have done replicate this each time, I have no idea how this is even possible, or what difference it would make sending it through the albums mail link or the picture mail tab instead.. I have tested this with various carriers, various pictures, etc and have the same results each time.
If anyone else is on Sprint with a touch pro and sees it's slow, out of curiosity.. how are you sending the picture mail? If you've been sending it via the album, perhaps try using the picture mail tab, new message, etc instead.. and see if it's quicker.
I apologize if this has already been posted, or is known, has been tried by everyone, or such.. I only found out about this today and figured I'd post it in the event it may actually help some others out there having the same problem as me. For all I know this is a glitch with how my own phone is setup, soo... *shrug*
I found that if you pull up the menu while viewing a photo and select options, you can change the resolution for sending pics to medium(320x240). It states it's only when sending emails, but it changes when using mms as well. As soon as I changed the setting my messages only take a minute or two to be received. Where as before I had the same problem you described. Hope this helps!
I've tried that as well, but it always bugged me how friends of mine could send larger pictures without an issue while mine would barely manage to send a small picture. Currently, I am able to send 1M (1280x960 with fine quality selected) sizes taken from the camera as long as I attach the media myself via the mail tab.
I'm still tempted to try the next size up just to see if that's quick as well but at this point I don't want to jinx it while it seems to be working great even for 1280x960 images.
on the new rom you need to run the pic mail remover first cause it has the pic mail in it. Then you can install Arcsoft after that with no problems.
i gave up on pic mail
same thing was happening to me. so i just gave up on it. i mean i still recieve pictures but in stead of using my pic to send i use my emails.
and use it to send pics straight to that persons phone
i use their carrier email like for ex for sprint its
(number) @pm.sprint.com
and its worked perfectly for me they get it just like a pic mail so much faster. just click send and move on to another program
makes me happy :0)

Animated gifs in MMS

Has anyone else noticed animated gifs via MMS not working when someone sends you one? My friends and I like to use them as quick responses and they're getting mine just fine but theirs comes through as a still. Despite opening the gif in Gallery or QuickPic, the gif appears to be broken. Also, it doesn't seem to matter which text app I use. Stock, Hangouts, or even Verizon Messaging shows all animated gifs broken. In case you're wondering, I use Hangouts primarily because it shows the gifs animated in-line. I'm also not rooted and I have no interested in rooting until after I've played around with the Lollipop update (whenever that happens).
Here are some things that I've noticed:
(1) It started happening when I got 12B
(2) A factory reset doesn't solve the problem
(3) Hangouts <-> Hangouts shows animated gifs properly but MMS -> Hangouts is broken
(4) People are still receiving my gifs animated
So what's going on? Is anyone else having this problem? Is it a Verizon issue?
Any suggestions, help, info, whatever would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Update
I installed Textra and it appears to be handling animated gifs no problem. But... this still doesn't explain why they don't work in any of the 3 SMS/MMS apps that come with the G3. Problem solved for now but it's really more of a bandaid than a true fix.
Hmm must not be a Verizon issue since Textra works. Shame we can't just blame them. Gifs play in Hangouts for me in-line as you described with 12b. There were some cases on google forums where clearing Hangout app/cache, uninstalling Hangouts, reboot, and reinstalling Hangouts worked for some but I don't think you can do that unrooted. Plus you have already factory reset anyways. I'm assuming your Hangouts is up to date.
On a side note, after taking the LP update you might no longer have the choice to root if they block rolling back to 10b which I'd say is highly likely. Best to unlock bootloader now. Within days of release the devs will release the LP OTA in a flashable zip. Just my two cents.

Could you share your settings? I'm still unable to get gifs to work in Textra. I'm using a G3 on Verizon.

I haven't touched the settings other than what it automatically took care of. It was weird, though, last night I suddenly stopped receiving texts in a timely manner so I uninstalled Textra and reinstalled it. Problem solved and it was working again. Have you tried that?
The first time I installed Textra on my L3 (I used it religiously on my old rooted HTC Evo3D) I was on one of the previous builds like 10 or something and it seemed to break texting entirely. All texts that I sent stayed in "sending" limbo while I wouldn't receive texts from anyone else. Even uninstalling Textra didn't fix the problem so I had to do a factory reset to get texting back. It has only been since gifs broke in stock/Hangouts that I even decided to install Textra again. I'm on 12B and now it works fine for me but I have no idea why.
I actually just realized that you can access a giphy library from within textra. I was trying to save gifs from chrome and attach but that didn't work. But using the gifs from within textra worked perfectly. I did change my MMS proxy port to 80 based on something I read on androidcentral, but I'm not sure that's necessary.
Sent from my VS985 4G using XDA Free mobile app
Update - that didn't last long
Textra has decided to spontaneously stop allowing me to send animated gifs larger than 2mb. I've gone into the MMS settings and changed the sending settings to "no limit" and it's still rejecting the send. Odd, it worked just fine up until a couple of days ago.
Trying other texting apps allows me to send large gifs but still received animated gifs are still broken. I'm getting really tired of this the reps at my local Verizon store are idiots.

Photos saved from MMS stripped of exif

So my wife and I are both on Verizon Wireless. She has a Pixel 3 XL & I have a Pixel 2 XL. Whenever she sends me a photo via MMS the filename & all exif data is stripped when I save them to my phone from our message thread. All the saved photos are renamed image000000.jpg.
Now this only happens with photos sent from my wife. If anyone else sends me photos by MMS the filename for them (if i save them to my phone) is the date/time stamp. Can't for the life of me figure out why only from my wife is all the photos data stripped. Any suggestions would be great, thanks so much for any help!
Edit: so I just noticed that its not every single photo taken and sent via mms.. but around 80%. Again this only ever happens when the wife sends pictures no other contacts or friends.

Root to retrieve WhatsApp key on my SIM that was recycled; without wiping?

Hi there, I hope you are doing well.
I'm quite desperated today. I recently change my phone number because I started a new job (about a week ago) and I also got a new corporate phone for it.
My old Note 8 was sitting in a drawer, as I've tried to make backups and move things over, the past few days. Today, when I went to open WhatsApp there, I got redirected back to the "Send SMS Verification" screen; locking me out of seeing my own messages that are stored in the SQLIte databases (msgstore.db.crypt12) in my own device!
From what I've been reading, the most probably cause is that a new subscriber to the phone company received my old number and created a new WhatsApp account. I know that they won't be seeing my messages, as those are stored in my device and encrypted with.
What I'd need to retrieve is my WhatsApp encryption key, located in /data/data/com.whatsapp/files/key to read my messages, but, obviously, needs root. My phone is not rooted and, from what I've also been reading, if I went to root it with any of the know methods, it would wipe everything and I'd lose that key.
Is there any way in which I can gain root and copy that file, without wiping? If not, is there any way I can create a "low-level" backup that woul ALSO backup that data; to later restore (after rooted). I think that all the common backups in the Play Store will, of course, not be able to access that data to backup. But I don't know about any of the Samsung bloated own apps (like Cloud Backups, Smart Switch, etc.); if those would work in my scenario.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide; looking forward to hear back from you.
Regards.

WhatsApp app itself has to create a backup of the chats.
In WhatsApp settings - Chats - Chat backup.
If you have to change your mobile number, there is a feature in WhatsApp to migrate your data, chats, settings, etc. to your new phone number. And to inform your WhatsApp contacts that you have a new number.
In WhatsApp settings - Account - Change number.
If there is a new WhatsApp account created with your old number, it might be too late now.
Thanks for your inpur @It_ler.
I know that you can migrate the WhatsApp number and how the procedure work. The thing is that WhatsApp deactivates accounts with no activity for more than 120 days and now, when opening it again, it tries to send validation to the phone number that I no longer own. Nobody created a new account with that number; as far as I know, it haven't been reassigned yet to another subscriber. Still, all my chat history is in the device itself, but encrypted with the key I can't get access to without rooting, while rooting hard resets (erases) everything; hence losing said key (catch-22).
Do you know of any way in which I could root or get access to the encryption key without having to delete everything?
Thanks again.

Sorry ... no, I don't
And do not forget to activate automatic chat backup into your Google drive for your new/recent chats.
