Hi,
When I first did a backup before moving to CM14 the guide said to backup every partition just in case. Since then TWRP has defaulted to that but I am running out of space so need to backup the bare minimum. Which partitions should I backup when installing a new nightly or moving to a new rom?
Thanks!

Boot, System and Data should suffice.

Hey guys ive installed VillainRom 5.5.0 a little while ago and was looking to change to the new 6.1.0 However im not quite sure which steps i need to follow.
I used this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645253
Do i just start from the second section? or do i need to load the recover rom etc.
Another thing i wanted to ask was ive done a full titanium backup (apps and settings one aswell as just apps one). If i download titanium again and go to restore it on a different Rom i shouldnt have any problems right? And i assume i should only restore the apps not the apps and settings?
Also i have apps2sd installed. Before restoring should i make sure the sd card has the ext2 partition before restoring from Titanium?
Final question is that ive done a nandroid backup with ext, but this is only useful if i want to revert to 5.5.0 right?
In summation:
1) From the guide where do i start to install a new Rom seeing as ive already rooted
2) Which Titanium backup do i restore? apps and settings? or just apps?
3) make sure after doing a full wipe and installing the new Rom that i have the right ext2 partition on my sd card before restoring from Titanium to make sure everything goes back to the sd card because of apps2sd?
4) Nandroid backup is only needed if i want to revert back to 5.5.0 and keep all my settings?
Thanks guys

No need to Do recovery stuffagain. Just put the ROM file onto the sdcard main folder and boot to recovery to flash it (remember your wipes)
You can restore the titanium backup with settings fine afaik
If you have ext partition already, it won't disappear or change, so you are fine
Always nandroid before flashing, but you are correct about what it does
OK thanks. 6.1.0 here i come i hope
My s3 is a 16GB one and I have 3GB free. If I do a nandroid backup will I need over a 13gb sd card?
generally they are 2GB or there abouts. It varies depending on what you have installed and the rom etc.

So what does nandroid actually backup?
If I've used 13gb, how is the backup only 2gb or so?

it doesn't back up your internal or external sd cards, but it does backup all your system data and apps, user apps and data
Ok so if I do a nandroid backup and I flash a new ROM and something is ot working thwn reflash from the nandroid backup, will everything like apps and their data, photos, settings be the way it was before I flashed a new ROM?

Yes... flashing shouldnt touch your media files like photos or music (internal/external sdcard)

I'm not so sure about that. When you restore, I thought you definitely want to be on the same Kernel as you were on when you created the Nandroid and to be safet it's also good to be on the same Rom as you were when you created the Nandroid backup. Otherwise... bootloop and ugly stuff. At least that's what I get from poking around the Infuse forums (my phone)... mileage may vary with S3.
I'd be interested to hear if others have opinion on this. I stumbled onto this thread while searching about Nandroid procedures.
I have been doing lots of ROM / Kernel experimentation on my VZW S4, and on attempting to take a backup of my most recent good configuration I received an error from TWRP that there is not enough space available because there is not enough space for my /Data partition which TWRP sees as 2438401MB or 2.4TB!
Since it is impossible that my on device /Data partition is 2.4TB, anyone have any suggestions on how to repair?
Or do I need to do a full install via Odin using the repartition option?
Thx.
Wow, it would be cool if you had 2tb, umm sounds like the recovery is corrupt, if it were me, I would try that first, if it does not work, do the odin flash to stock.
Good luck.
I reinstalled the TWRP recovery, and also reflashed a Verizon stock image file...but TWRP is still reporting my /data partition at 2.4TB.
I'm thinking I need to repartition, but have never done so on an Android device.
Recommendations?
I would try reading the odin features and what it does to re-partition. It has that option, but messing with the partition structure will cause a hard brick if not careful.
good luck.
Okay, I did an complete factory restore using the image from the following thread and now have a properly sized /data partition.

Whew.
Thx.

hehe you got off easy...good deal.
Can you tell TWRP to do its backups to the SD card rather than internal memory?
Thinking about getting an S4 but w/only 9GB free, would like to keep my backups on the SD card I'm going to get for it. I know I could move them there after creating them, but don't want to deal with having to move them back and forth if I need to restore one.

Hi,
I have a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 3GB Global Version and will swap with the same model but a 4Gb version. Both are unlocked with RedWolf twrp as recovery and MiUi 9.2.
What should I include in my nandroid backup if I wish to restore all my apps and their data to the 4Gb version? Until now, my backups include System-Data-Boot and wifi-bluetooth data.
Thank you for your advice.

Why not simply use MIUI backup? It also backups all your apps with data and your settings. Copy the back up folder to your SD card or computer and restore it on your new phone.
If you're rooted, you can use Titanium Backup, the best way to backup and restore apps.
If not, you can try an ADB backup but I can't guarantee it'll work well: https://9to5google.com/2017/11/04/how-to-backup-restore-android-device-data-android-basics/
You don't need the Android SDK. Just grab the platform-tools package, unzip it to your desktop, CD into it (use a command prompt or terminal to enter the directory) and then follow the guide.

The only thing you need to do is change the device id in your backups. First backup your original device to an sdcard then put that card in your new device. Next backup just boot (this creates the new device id directory) then move full backup to new id. Last just restore the full backup. I know this works because I went from 3gb to 4gb a few months ago. Make sure you DONT restore efs from old device to new.

Issue with miui backup is that if you are using a custom miui rom it wont backup everything like the stock rom does.

I used Titanium before but I'd like to do something really easy and clean and in a one swoop solution like a nandroid restore.
I think I'm going to go the solution proposed by cidxtc because it's tested.
Thanks mate for chiming in.

All right, please cidxtc let me resume to make sure I understand you correctly because I'm a noob.
1/ From the 3Gb phone, I entrer RedWolf TWRP recovery, make a backup of just 'System + Data' (see attached screenshot) and not Boot to a SD card.
2/ Put the SD card in the 4Gb phone, enter recovery and select to backup 'Boot' only. Then move the 3Gb backup 'System + Data' into the RedWolf folder where the 4Gb 'Boot' backup is. Afterwards, I just have to restore the 'System + Data' from there.
Is this correct ?

You need system, data, and boot from the 3gb device. The rest is correct.

The new phone should arrive next week. I was doing my homework to be ready. I'll come back and let you know how it goes. Hopefully everything will go smoothly if i do as discussed.
I received my phone today and will apply to unlock its bootloader first, then root it.
Meanwhile, could you please cidxtc explain, if possible, why I shouldn't include the boot file in the nandroid backup of the 3Gb phone to be restored to the 4Gb phone? Will the 4Gb phone boot without this file after restoring just system and data only?

Thanks mate. I was correct to be insure about this bit. I would have made a serious mistake.
I'll keep you updated when all its done.
When I backed up 9s using twrp, the backup was successful and the restore did not cause any problems.
However, after creating and backing up the 'second space', the second space is initialized without being restored normally.
I don't know why...
There is no system partition in TWRP.
so I did check in 'super partition'
But when I back up, I get an 'super partition failed' error.
Is there a way to back up with second space?
What should I do?
Use titanium backup to backup your 2nd space app data.
