Which of the steps 5 and 7 did you use? Which strings? I want to take the plunge but dont want to jack my phone up.

Hotspot hack works here as well. Seems easier than the other method.
1. Download Shortcut Master Lite
2. Search for LTEfunctionality
3. Click on com.test.LTEfunctionality
4. Launch
5. Scroll down to LTE APN Setting
6. Add " ,dun " to APN2 LTE and EHRPD internet under APN type. That line should read default, mms, dun when you finish.
7. Native Hotspot should work. You may have to do this hack again if you update Profile.

The 10GB HotSpot limit is already enabled if you are under the Freedom Unlimited Plan, in this case you dont need the hack.

I see alot of people commenting that wifi tether doesn't work, or its incompatible with the stock kernel. Well I just wanted to post exactly how I got it to work.
How I got it running......
1. Get temp root by one of the methods in the forum. (I personally used Tilde88's method from the " yes another rootme thread in the dev section"
2. Download the wifi tether apk from the root/FAQ thread.
3. In the settings change profile to desire (cdma)
4. In settings apply check to box to fix HTC routing.
Wifi tether should restart and you should be in business. Thats all i did and I can stop and start it and the tether continues to connect to the internet. Hope this helps somebody.
EDIT. Thanks to quinxy....I forgot to mention the wifi tether will tell you that you don't have root, but proceed anyway when it ask's for superuser access. Not sure why it does that, but the app will work regardless.

ECELLENT... THIS is how i got my tethering to work also except i used a different root method..
i used the easy root script tp temp root, then just installed wireless tether pre14, works perfect for me.
Also got barnacle wifi to work after using the perma temp root. no special config needed. But will try wifi tether now since it had epa support.

google search is my friend, lol, first thing i did this morning to be exact .
You might want to update the first post to let people know that even if the WiFi Tether warns you on start that you're not root, and you know you are, it's ok, just proceed and start the tether. The SU app will then ask for super user permission. I spent 30 minutes trying to figure out why WiFi Tether didn't think I was root! I'd just bail out without trying to start tethering, since I thought it'd be pointless (since the app warning says it will!).

Those with unlimited data plans do not get free tethering, it is blocked and requires you to pay for it.

Many (including myself) have flashed using this method with outstanding success. And as for advantages. Root is what I needed to get wifi tethering to work, remove bloatware, and run many purchased apps that required root.
I posted this earlier but will post it again for how I achieved wifi tethering:
"Just got flawless wifi tether running with TrevE's modded wifitether.
Can be found in his original post:

Setup Method: Netd-NDC (master)
Send Netd Max Client Cmd - Checked
Wifi-driver reload 2 - Checked
Routing fix - Checked"

Not true at all.
I have unlimited and i use portable hotspot which bypasses the VZ activation and I've never been charged.
The WiFi Tether - TrevE Mod method did not work for me.
However, this simple little app does work:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=kr.core.technology.wifi.hotspot&hl=en
I guess the authentication system used by Verizon isn't all that robust, if all you need is a simple app that doesn't even require root to bypass the subscription check and start the native WiFi tethering. Heh.
I have this issue nonstop.. It's random and annoying..
I've gone an hour or two without problems and then all of the sudden 4g icon disappears and comes back over and over until I stop tethering and restart it.. and then it happens immediately.. If I keep restarting tethering eventually it will hang on without dropping out but it will start it's crap again eventually.
I could have sworn Trev-E caused the phone to do the same thing. I want to say the issue is the phone and or the radio firmware.. possibly the kernel?

These settings for TrevE Mod have worked perfectly for me on Vzw since the first day I rooted. Also, make sure you have the right version from 11/22/2012 and uninstall any old versions, apparently it does not upgrade very well. Good luck.

Foxfi does not work! The http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/g3-hotspot-hack-t2812305 does. But you need to be rooted which is a easy as a breeze.

What you could also do is just change the channel. So pretty much just change something about the network everytime. i'd just go with the channel so the ssid just stays the same everytime

Still no tether for me. I understand the apn method works for native hotspot although i cant confirm or get it working myself. Does the apn hack work on 3g? This is the only reason i can come up with for why i cant get it to work. Im on lte/cdma. Follow instructions exactly. When i turn on hotspot, 3g turns off then hotspot turns off. Then error pops up saying something network error then popul about info for hotspot subscription. Ive gone to youtube to watch method. Its easy idk what im missing.

I don't think that's an issue. But maybe.
I'm on the fringe of LTE so my signal bounces back and forth between LTE and 3G.

Any progress on getting this to work? I have the sprint G3 rooted with the original rom but still having the data teathering error. I tried doing the shortcuts trick but it didnt work with the lite version.
Nevermind I got mine to work now. Took a couple reboots but the shortcuts method worked.
Enable Wireless Tethering Rooted Moto X Pure
1. Modifying system files could render your device useless, so by continuing you’re assuming that risk
2. Using a root file explorer, navigate to /system/
3. (Optional) Make a copy of the build.prop
4. Open the build.prop file with a text editor
5. Add the following line to the bottom of build.prop file: net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
6. Save the file and reboot your device
This has been confirmed to work with a Sprint Sim.

It should be noted that some carriers (such as T-Mobile) use the number of hops left on packets that hit their servers to indicate that you're using tethering rather than cellphone data.
The xt_HL.ko netfilter driver included with a customer kernel should allow a user to use the IP Tables rule to change tethered traffic TTL with the default TTL of the device. This would make tethered data appear as if it's actually cellphone data.
I think this is currently contained in CM (at least it is on my OPO), but doesn't seem to be contained in the default kernel for moto phones (though I've only tested the 2013 X).
A guide about including this in a kernel can be found here, and I encourage anyone kernel devs out there to at least give this a look.
Thanks!
I have Verizon unlimited and the tethering worked for me without any type of verification or mod to the system provisions.
Usually because of unlimited this is deactivated to force the subscriber into paying the additional $30 monthly charge.
Are other carriers not allowing you guys to tether or something?

That's really strange. I can confirm it worked with my Cricket sim in a 1575 (Pure). I haven't done anything to it but rooted it so I could put Viper4Android (audio) on it.
Not working on Three UK.
This is what worked on MetroPCS(Tmob)
From http://pocketnow.com/2015/01/01/nexus-6-tethering:
(Optional) Using a root file explorer, navigate to /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/ and make a copy of settings.db
Install and open a SQL editor and grant it root access when prompted (such as SQLite Editor)
Tap the APPS tab and then “Settings Storage”
Tap on settings.db then global
Tap on the + symbol to add a new key/value pair
In the name field type in tether_dun_required
In the value field type in 0 (zero)
Tap Save
Open the Android system Settings
Under WIRELESS & NETWORKS tap More…
Tap Mobile networks then APNs
(If you’re using T-Mobile) Make sure your T-Mobile configuration is selected (mine is T-Mobile GPRS), then tap on it
(If you’re using T-Mobile) Make sure your APN protocol and APN roaming protocol are both set to IPv4 (it doesn’t look like tethering works with IPv6 yet)
(If you’re using T-Mobile) Make sure your APN is set to fast.t-mobile.com
Reboot

I noticed that this flag is already set in Spasticdroid's deodexed Semi-Stock ROM.
Worked like a champ on my Pure on Sprint...
Thanks sooooo.much
I'm using Cricket Wireless in Florida.
Works! Yay I have tethering again
OP, thanks for the share.
I have also found an alternate method that requires no editing of prop files.
I tried several of the apps on the store and discovered that the free app mify works on Sprint with no system edits except having a rooted phone.
been working for me for several weeks, ymmv...https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=share.hotspot.myfi&hl=en
Works for me out of the box on Verizon with udp.

Probably because they want you to waste through data so you can incurre data overage charges. [emoji1]

Anyone have any luck with this method on marshmallow? I'm not able to see the db's, but can on my lollipop devices
