So we had an older HP all-in-one PC lying around and my toddler is old enough to play with tablets and such so I thought I would look at RemixOS. Had a little trouble getting it going at first but all is good now, dual booting the machine with Remix.
Problem we seem to be having is our toddler manages to close apps if she doesn't use just 1 finger on the screen or swipes up or down from top/bottom. Is there any way to prevent this? We think this could be a great tool for her but she keeps closing the apps. Anything we could do to "lock" it down or make it more baby friendly?
Thanks,
Daddy Daycare

So I've had my gtablet for a little while and found some things I really like. I'm going to list them, and maybe say why. There are a couple things I couldn't get working. Really though, my purpose with this post is to see if anyone knows about anything really cool I'm missing!!!
The ROM: Calkulin's 1.1 - this ROM has been great. VERY responsive compared to TNT lite, a couple of the CM's, and Vegan that I have tried. I'm also running it with Clem's kernal. Still haven't been able to change anythign to fix the random shut off problem, but it restarts pretty quickly and I'm still getting 10+hrs batt life if I just leave the screen on when I'm at school.
Thumb Keyboard: From the market - this keyboard is awesome. It costs a couple bucks, but it's worth it. The keyboard is optimized for tablet use (ie - letters on the sides, so you're not reaching over the middle). Using it for a week now with no complaints.
ADW Launcher: I paid. Used it on my fascinate. Like it on my tab. Are there launchers optimized for tablets or anything cool/unique?
Hard Keyboard: it's a "genius" USB keyboard. It was 18 bucks. Kids at school make fun of me for having a corded keyboard but I don't care. It's light weight and works well.
Calibration.ini on my SD card. IT'S LIKE A DIFFERENT SCREEN!
Carbon Fiber Pattern Stick on from Ebay everyone else seems to have found. Like it a lot.
Market fix, although once in a while appbrain has an app the market can't seem to find. No real complaints yet though.
My biggest complaint is a widget problem - the Widget for SPRINGPAD does not exist! It's not even on the list. I wish I could find it.
I really enjoy using OFFICESUITE for taking notes in class and it supports keyboard shortcuts like copy/paste, save. 30 day trial is nice, too. RepliGo Reader has been my go-to pdf reader (I read a lot of those in PT school). Alkilido (sp?) Ebook reader is my go-to for ebook readers. Dropbox, and the titanium media sync for dropbox is great! I've been switching between Firefox Browser and Miren Browser for web browsing, but haven't found a browser for the tablet I'm completely sold on.
What i'd really like to find is a stylish looking folding case I've read through the posts and I'm not really excited about anything I've seen on amazon or etsy.
I guess my big question is: am I missing out on anything really cool?
Nice timeline of what you've done. Looks like you've tweaked the system to your liking.
As I thought about things you might have missed, it occurs to me that there isn't any one or several things you just have to do. It's more about the process of tinkering and playing with a new toy.
as for ROMs, I've tried TNTL, Vegan 5.X, and currently Vegan Ginger. They've all been great. Each has their own little quirks, and if you put made me use one or the other, I would be less upset about the actual choice, than the lack of choice.
I guess all I'm saying is just keep tinkering. Make sure you get comfortable with CWM backup, and flash away into new territories.
bah stupid forward button
Only thing I did in addition to those things was d isable the hard menu buttons on the side (I kept hitting them when I didn't want to) using button remapper and used button savior to make software keys that are easy to use.
As far as accessories VS dropped the ball in that area, from what I can see they are getting a nice penny from slapping their name on the tablet and paying for someone to update it a few times and they'll quit supporting it. I don't expect to see any "official" items for this tablet no matter what VS says.
A cool home launcher that's been optimized for tablets is VTL. Check it out in the Gtablet Apps section of XDA. It's based on ADW and is a work in progress but runs really well.
vtl is awesome but it doesnt play nice with caulkins
What is the "calibration.ini" all about? I am running TnT lite (though I an a CM7 fan on my phone), love almost everything but the viewing angles so if you have something that helps I'd love to know about it.
Thanks!
Create a file on the SD card called calibration.ini if you are unhappy about he responsive ness of your screen. I was, and the difference it made was like it became a completely different device!
Better yet, download this App and calibrate at will:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=934500
The 'problem' with calibration.ini is that if you leave it on the SDcard, it recalibrates everytime you reboot. Not a problem unless you happen to be touching the screen while it does it!
With this app you can run the calibration at will.

That's the first thing I tried. Unfortunately, like some others on here, it did not fix the screen at all time. It worked the first day, but not anytime afterward for me. I then tried the .ini file fix, perfect!
I did the ini before I saw an app was released. Deleted after boot n its worked well since but thanks a lot! Can anyone recommend a good mobile web browser? I'm using Miren and Firefox. Tried skyfire and don't much care for the dolphin apps.

Can you be more specific? I'm running Calkulin+Clemsyn Froyo combo and VTL is included in that ROM. Seems to work as advertised for me.
Great thread OP!
Im running skyfire for now as my browser. Firefox all the way for my macbook and pc! The reviews for firefox in market make me not want to bother. Is it any better than skyfire? Only thing that bugs me is can't delete tabs, you've got to wipe cashed or after a reboot they are gone.
So what's the issue with the calibration of screen? Is this something everyone with a Gtab should do? Only just out of bootup is my screen unresponsive.
EDITI ran it and can now tell a huge difference! Everyone run the app that was posted.
Can't wait to run VTL once launcher widgets work.
Running rockplayer with no more HD playback issues so far (wish VLC would put out an app).
Ive noticed FF renders some pages a little smoother, is a big different from Loren or skyfire. But it takes a little longer to lad.
Hello All,
My girlfriend just got a new Orange SGS2. The phone is great, really slim, fast at playing games, high linpack score etc.
However there is a problem that really bothers me, apps load pretty much instantly however when you press the home button they take ~6 seconds to close!
This happens with even the most basic apps such as the dialler or contacts and is very frustrating as I am sure the SGS2 should be performing better than this. My HTC Desire (and even my old HTC hero to a slightly lesser extent) closes apps pretty much instantly
Hope the gurus of XDA can help with this one.
Many thanks,
hopoffbaby
Okay, the reason your old phone shut them instantly was because it needed to free up resources.
The SGS2 is a far superior phone in terms of spec and as such it doesn't need to shut its apps the moment you hit home.
Android is very capable to say the least when managing its resources so stop watching the task-manager and RAM usage, don't use a task killer and just enjoy life with the SGS2 it'll never struggle.
Mine regularly has 15+ apps running in the background with no noticeable effect on its stunning performance.
Hi,
I think you have misunderstood me. I'm not talking about the kernel killing the apps to free memory, I'm talking about how long it take to return to the home screen after pressing the home (or back) button.
For example, I open the contacts app and it loads instantly. When i click the home button I can count to 6 (slowly) before I am back at the home screen.... It is incredibly annoying and I am sure it is not how Samsung intended??
Thanks again,
hopoffbaby
Should be instant .
You may need to factory reset after backing up data .
jje
Hi,
I was hoping to avoid a factory reset. I have read a few people are having issues (none seem to be as long as 6 seconds though) and that it may be related to the voice control or the touchwiz launcher?
Any thoughts on that?
thanks
Hi,
I toggled the driving mode on and off again and that seems to have go the delay down to around 2 seconds which is a massive improvement, although still not ideal I don't think. What I don't understand however is that the driving mode wasn't on in the first place so why did this make a difference?
Does anyone know what driving mode actually does?
Thanks,
hopoffbaby
Seems like the correct place for this:
Anyone know of a ROM or program that will allow me to set it up so that she has limited access to programs/system?
Perhaps a launcher I can lock down such that it only shows her games and gallery video player, camera, etc.?
I figure I will use Button Remapper to deactivate the search/home/menu/back buttons (otherwise she will accidentally hit them when watching a video or playing a game).
Not sure what to do about the soft buttons---she needs to be able to access menus and go back somehow.
Oh, she is 3. She uses it all the time and loves the games I put on there, but the issues above need to be resolved before it is practical for her to use. It has been gathering a lot of dust since I got my new phone, and she really wants to have her own computer...
Any other ideas are welcome too of course.
Thanks

To recommend a rom that would satisfy both her needs and yours I would look towards a 2.2 froyo based rom, any of them would do but for perfomance for games and working camera I would go with Beasty.
To be able to lock certain system settings and apps you can look into a face lock app from the market. There are numerous free versions to try out, but one you find the one thqts works right for your needs suggest purchase version for more options.
In a similar situation...handing down the tablet to my nephews and niece. They really want to be able to video chat. Are there any HC/ICS based ROMs that have the camera working? I've been away too long and haven't kept up with dev. Hoping someone can help me narrow down the search.
TIA!
just a small handful of questions, if any folks would be so kind to answer, id be so kind as to "Thank" you back xd.
Google Drive, on the desktop version, i can drag the pics/vids/docs out to my desktop and have them on my harddrive.. is there a way to do this on the phone? other than "make available offline"? i really just want to use gdrive to transfer stuff back and forth, so is there a way?
is there a way to prevent apps from sleeping? for example, prevent google maps from sleeping when my screen shuts off, so i dont have to refind my location, and all that when i turn it back on? or those damn "you must wait 9 minute 59 seconds to download this file" i can minimize the browser, and do something else in the mean time.. ORR minimize youtube, so i can listen to a podcast/music without having the video up/screen on? is there any way to prevent an app from sleeping? i mean you can get bugs that do it, so why not an app/feature for it?
what color should i pain my toes?
THANKS PPLS!!<3
First off, don't paint your toe nails women are beautiful as they are without clobber! And to answer your other questions, I didn't think the apps 'slept' anyways....once their running, their running.
I dunno about podcasts because I've never listened to them and the only popup thing I can think of is the "pop-up browser" ported from the Note 2, which is handy and isn't because you can't download whilst in pop-up browser lol

I have Remix working perfectly on another computer, so I'm not totally inexperienced with it but I just can't figure this one out.
I have installed the latest Remix on a 32gb USB 3.0 for my daughter. It boots fine, but it is stuck in portrait mode, and the touchscreen doesn't work. So essentially to use it the screen must be plugged into the keyboard base, but when it is, the picture is all sideways.
It's an unbranded windows 10 2-in-1, model CES102. I know people are going to have less idea with an unbranded product, but hoping someone has similar issues and has managed to fix it.
Also, I'm trying to figure out how to expand storage space to take up the whole stick. All the instructions I find, including the ones I used for my computer, seem to be for expanding storage on an HDD partition and not USB.
I just downlaoded the nextbook version in case that will work better, my understanding is this 2-in-1 is extremely similar to one of the nextbooks, so thought I would give it a shot. But it looks to be quite a different install process to the standard "for PC" one. Does anyone know either the answers to my original questions, or how I can install this version to USB and give it a go?
Bump
boot it up, open play store, type in rotate, grab a rotation app to control rotation. The one i use allows me to lock rotation which is nice for games that think they are going to take over rotation. As for the Size of your data, Plug in your usb drive while in windows, grab Rmxtools 1.8 or 1.8fix, open Rmxtools and resize your data.img to whatever youd like
Great thank you, will give this a go in the morning. I think downloading that app will be difficult when everything is sideways to the touchpad lol, but if it might fix it I will absolutely do it. Will report back.

Rotation Control by Crapemyrtle is what I use.
