[update-02/21/2013]
Although changing the "garmin pilot" dpi settings did nothing but make things smaller in the app, changing the "Android System" dpi setting to 240 or lower will force the program to run as a tablet instead of the crippled phone version. Not sure if this is the same for other apps as well but I figured I would put this out there for others with the same issue.
[update-02/21/2013]
I rooted my note 2 hoping to use garmin pilot in tablet mode. I installed Jelly 'Beans' - Build 9 [02/12/13] and also Xposed framework so I can change DPI settings. However this program seems unaffected by a simple dpi change. If there is any way to hack this one program to force it to install as a tablet I would be grateful.

I haven't ever had the framework not show some difference, usually it just screws up the layout if it isn't going to work.
Do you have the app settings module active in the xposed installer app?
Coming from N5, I've played around a lot with the DPI settings, to find the perfect spot (361).
Can you also change the DPI settings on the Z2? N5 has it via editing the build.prop but don't know how Sony does this. I'm yet to receive the phone (on Tuesday) but wanna know in advance.
You can simply edit the build.props to change the dpi
Something to know about xperias is they are extremly close to AOSP with the way the firmware works
Its how xperia FWs are, they are very light

I used DPI Changer app from the play store to change mine, also allows you to backup & restore build.prop file as well
It can be a pain to find the correct DPI that doesn't cause issues with some apps, I originally changed it to 400 for a couple of weeks but that was still a bit too big, 320 was too small, 360 was fine but Tv Show Favs app layout got a bit missed up (the main screen was instead a bar on the left of the screen) Ended up settling on 370.
Oh, it's pretty much the same? Good news then!
On my N5, I use 361 due to issues that 360 causes with some apps, and hoping to do the same on soon-to-be-mine Z2, since it was the perfect spot. But if that won't work, and 370 works (as per above post), that's great! Cheers guys.

I'm trying to figure out why DPI Changer doesn't work for me. I also tried Texdroider, which I previously used on an LG G2 with success. Both apps appear to go through the motions, but when I apply the changes and reboot, nothing is changed.
I'm running a D6503 rooted .402, locked boot loader and I installed SuperSU from the Play Store. Running Root Checker confirms I am rooted.
I'm hoping to be able to set the DPI so it can match the look and feel of the Z Ultra
Thanks in advance for any help!
Hadn't thought of changing DPI in quite a while, actually since my Xperia Z. I'm too going to play around with DPI till I find something a bit smaller but then again not too small. I've always thought that the interface had gotten unnecessarily big after the Xperia T.
Edit: Anyone happen to notice what the original DPI value was on the Z2? I changed mine a little too quick..
If anyone likes the ZU the exact DPI is 320
For Z2 Tablet it is 140
And for default it is 480

@orbitalcomp I did have issues with SuperSU granting root to dpi changer, had to apply the new dpi twice & even then sometimes it wouldn't apply on reboot, also had issues with AdAway failing to copy & apply the new hosts file, tried using the full unroot option in SuperSU but it just stuck saying uninstalling please wait. Had to use Solid Explorer to delete the SuperSU apk file & the binary then downloaded the recovery version of clockworkmod superuser & flash that, no issues with dpi changer or AdAway or any other root apps.
Maybe it just me but I have always found SuperSU to be a bit flaky & buggy at times both on the Z2 & my old Galaxy S & Galaxy S3, never had any issues with clockworkmod superuser
I have setted DPI to 320 by editing build.prop.
Then you can apply some different DPI settings App per App using AppSettings Xposed, working great!

Thanks for the reply, BanziBaby. Not sure if you had the same issue originally, but when installing SuperSU from the Play Store it would not update the binaries on first run. After a reboot, SuperSU would open and it was able to grant permissions to the different apps, but I guess it wasn't a full grant.
Is there anyway to install a working version of SuperSU without going through recovery? I'm assuming I have to unlock my boot loader to install a recovery, right?

Do the stock apps all handle the 320 dpi just like the Z Ultra, meaning there are more icons allowed on the home screen, dock, and app drawer?
I remember when I had my ZU, I was even able to install tablet apps straight from the Play Store since it apparently registered as a tablet/phone hybrid. That would be nice on the Z2 as well.

I have an issue with the Xperia launcher when I change DPI..
The icons on the launcher just get smaller and smaller and unlike google now launcher it doesn't adapt to the changed DPI.
Anyone else have this? I really don't want to switch away from Sony's launcher and smaller dpi is pretty awesome on a larger screen.

with which DPI? If I remenber well I had the same until I switched to 320 DPI, which is just perfect.
With everything I randomly tried around 400. Rebooted twice after applying 320 and it actually worked!
Ended up using the DPI Changer app, since editing the build.prop directly didn't seem to work after multiple reboots, but 361 is doing the job so far.
Success!
I was finally able to get my root and SuperSU binaries to take after some trial and error from reading the Easy Root Tool thread. Took a combination of installing the SuperSU.apk and rooting multiple times to do it.
Now I'm running 320dpi after changing the setting in DPI Changer...it looks fantastic! I always thought the Z Ultra had the best looking dpi for a smartphone, now it looks perfect on the Z2.
Couple things I noticed...the launcher now rotates to landscape, plus I'm not able to install the tablet version of Slingplayer like I could on the ZU, says it's incompatible in the Play Store. No big deal really, since the phone version works fine, I just like having the full remote of the tablet version.
Thanks to everyone for their input!

Any intention to support multi DPI?
Alot of Custom ROMS allow easy changing of the DPI, Seems your limiting your potential market.
I Love Themer, I just cannot use it, as Landscape and Multi DPI do not work properly.

I completely understand the complexity of the multi DPI.
But has anyone considered some pre defined DPI's
So at least the user can get a Near Enough DPI, and then tweaking the theme to fit perfectly is only minimal changes.
Again just a theory, I have never really worked on DPI.

There's a strange relationship with a device's DPI and resolution, which is why many device aren't supported (such as the G3). We've tried what you've suggested, however "near-enough" isn't what the average user wants

Hi, unfortunately the Mega isn't supported just yet due to its resolution. Hopefully it will be soon though!
I have a rooted Nexus 5 with SlimKat ROM running. SlimKat changes the DPI by default, but using BuildProp Editor I changed it to the stock 445 DPI. However, Themer says my resolution is wrong. If I set Themer as my default launcher, I can press the home button and see the default Themer appearance, I just can't download anything from the app. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
I was running trents rom on the GN2 at 270 and it looked ok. I have gotten away from this application recently though.

Apps use current orientation.
Annoyed apps changing current screen orientation? Try this module!
If you are using in landscape, some apps force orientation to portrait. So you have to rotate you device to use this app which is a bad user experience. With this module these apps don't change anymore the screen orientation and you could use it in current orientation. An example of such an app is System app remover
There are 2 apps with same effect, but
HaveOwnOrientation (free): This app has no user interface. Enable it in Xposed - reboot - done.
OwnOrientation (donate): User interface for simple configuring, logging etc
IMPORTANT
Xposed needs root access for installation

@faizan.rupani: Maybe the app checks the current location and sets it again if it is not as desired. Can you post a link to the app?

+1 for application settings for blacklist
Hello, I tried the module and it works, but when I rotate the screen potrait mode on apps that are supposed to be used in landscape mode only the screen just goes black. It would be wonderful to be able to fine tune the module for each indivudual app like "Ultimate Rotation Control" does
Makes my screen camera screen black so I can't see what I'm taking pictures of lol HTC one m8 I know its been said and its probably noted just wanted to tell ya but great module been looking for something like this for awhile now
Hi! Tried the module. This modules solves my problem with the game called:
School Idol Festival both, English and Japanese Versions.
but when I launch the app while in portrait, then i rotated to landscape, it scales with the same size as in portrait having only 1/4 on the screen
what i mean is that when i launch the app, it retains it's size and doesnt rescale with the current orientation.
just an opinion maybe you could also add a blacklist or sort . just an opinion.
Good Job anyways
Okay okay, rudimentary block list added, no time atm for full gui. Just place package names in the file of apps which should not be blocked.
If you dont know the package name
- open Play Store in webbrowser, the ?id= part of the ur is the app
- or enable debug in the module, it shows all package names in xposed log
- or search in the created blockfile the app, but there are no new installed apps added

If Xposed is system or not should not matter - but could cause other problems, dont know excatly.
If you open the module it "opens" a text file with you default app. Maybe you have set one earlier as default which does nothing. This assignement could be reset in Andorid app drawer "reset defaults", or so.
You could also open the file manually: /data/data/de.defim.apk.haveownorientation/files/HaveOwnOrientation.txt

Hi all,
I have found a way to change the dpi without root, just using adb and cmd and it worked like a charm...well, almost. There are a couple of UI glitches that appear when you reduce (or increase for that matter) the dpi.
Firstly, the icons on the home screen mess up, but that's not SUCH an issue as you can install another launcher or in my case, find an icon pack that doesn't show the mess up quite as much (my preferable choice because you see the icons set in different areas of the UI, such as the notifications shade and recents menu, settings, etc.)
Secondly, and the most annoying, is the crop function messes up in the weirdest way. Whether it be when changing wallpaper or trying to crop a picture in CamScanner, the image you choose appears zoomed in and there is no way to zoom out or even move the image around, only zoom in further.
Now, my question is, has anyone managed to find a suitable dpi that MIUI does not have a problem with, or are there some standard dpi's MIUI uses apart from 480? Or has anyone found a way around any of these issues (or any other issues they may have encountered when changing the dpi)? Last but not least, is there a custom version of MIUI out there, or a rom that has it's visuals (and camera app) but custom tailored to suit various dpi's and other modifications?
I really cannot live with the stock dpi of 480, it's like using a phone made for old people, waaaay too large EVERYTHING on a large screen, I want to see more on a large screen. But I also am not yet prepared to go off MIUI as I really like their UI, visually, and I know any other rom will lose a lot of camera quality amoungst some other things like battery life, etc.
Thanks guys in advance for any advice.

No, the original is 480, which is too large...where did you get the number 386 from? perhaps it is another one of their phone's stock DPI, which means MIUI might not warp on this DPI value? Will check it out, but any information you have, please let me know

so, thanks guys, used some of the suggested DPI values, 386 and 375, and mostly everything works fine....except still some small issues with the icons and the cropping. try and set a wallpaper for a whatsapp group for example, photo shows as zoomed in and cannot zoom out to choose a crop of the WHOLE image like I used to....have attached some screenshots of what happens to my icons....is this possibly because I am not rooted that the DPI value is not getting set in to the system correctly? No, no need....as long as you have ADB drivers installed and you are launching the CMD from within the ADB folder, it will work. Oh and of course USB debugging enabled and the first time it tried to access the phone for ADB details, you will need to allow it to by hitting remember and ok on the phone

Roger Rabbit...I think at the time of the screenshots I was using a different theme for the status bar, but can't remember as I am now using Eureka 8 Pro. Roger Rabbit is the base theme though, quite like the grey simplicity.

If the original one is 386 I think 400 is kinda useless... Or did you mean 300?

The original isn't near 386. I went down to 380 and everything it far smaller than a 6 dpi difference. I'd say stock is closer to 430 - 450
Yes man, you was right the original DPI is 440, the app textdroiderDPI was showing me an incorrect value of 386 (maybe a little bug...).
Setting it on 440 with LeDpiChanger gave me a full stock MIUI size
Stock is 480DPI, changers give bad result...just root and change build.prop ro.sf.lcd_density=

Thank you sir, this works for me on MIUI 8.1.1.0 global stable, change my screen density to 420. Icons are perfect.
