So I Downloaded An App From A Random Web Site, And It Wont Let Me Install It, I Get This Error MSG...
"For Security Your Phone Is Set To Block Installation Of Applications Not Sourced In Android Market"
Ive Looked All Over My Phone For A Way To Change This Setting But For The Life Of Me I Cant Get It To Allow, PLZ Help, Its Frustrating As Hell.
Hi
If you go to Settings>Applications> Unknown Sources
You can change it here.
Same happened to me when I purchased a game, just changed the option back after it had installed.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
I Don't Have That Option, =(
Settings>Applications> all i get is "Manage applications" or "Development"
Under Development There Is An Option Marked "Allow Mock Locations"
But After I Click It, It Has Absolutely No Effect On My Phone In Any Way As Far As I Can Tell...
My Phone Is Un-Touched Besides A Few Downloaded Apps N Games, But Every time I Consider Rooting Or Whatever I Look Into It, I Get So Lost, Confused, Turned Around I Lose Nerve lol

Might be best saving your bandwidth for 2.1 then. Debranding would probably help but you might as well just wait.
Thanks boss, its just frustrating but i appreciate the help bro.
If you root your AT&T X10a you can use the method for the captivateto re-enable non-market apps. The location for the settings.db file is slightly different than the ccaptivate though. I created a thread about it. Search for ATT non-market.

Ya But The Whole Root Thing Gets Me So Lost, Ive Been Searching XDA + Google + Every Other Tech Site I Can Find And Ive Literally Read Every Thread On Rooting/De Branding/ECT. For The Past 3 Days Ive Had Off Work, And I Still Would Have Better Luck Doing Open Heart Surgery I Know Its Simple But For Some Reason I Just Cannot Follow, =(

To root, dl x10 root and adb push it onto your phone, instructions are in the sdk you dl, then run the root app and you should be good

So Wats The Deal W The Whole Rom Thing? And Why Are Some Rooting apk's Small Ans Some Are Huge, N Which Is The Correct Way To Approach It?
No root necessary but debrand is required.
You can thank AT&T for limiting your device's ability to function.
Isn't it nice to pay huge fees and get your content edited?
I know, I'm on AT&T also.

So Debrand Is Wat I Need? And How Did U Debrand Ur x10a, And How Do I Find Out If My X10a Is "R2BA026"?
I have done both methods and rooting has worked out better for me. Better performance and better battery life. Also, as I said, you can easily re-enable non-market apps. AT&T is a newer OS build than all the others. Once you remove all the bloatware the phone is much faster.
If you really want to get the most from your phone, learning to use adb is important. If you concentrate on getting adb working, it will make all the other hacks easier to understand.

You have to use ADB from your PC to install this apk and then you can run it to root your phone. You can try Android Central Sideload Wonder Machine but a few people have been having trouble getting it to work. It works for me with my AT&T X10 just fine though. When you run this app it will allow you to select the .apk file and then install it to the phone.
AT&T has blocked all non-market app downloads but you can definitely bypass this setting. I was successfully able to install non-market app by the ADB method as Naplesbill suggested. You will have to download the android sdk and familiarize yourself with ADB. This can take some time, but well worth it!
See this handy post on how to do so:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719
An issue that came up for me is that the device id doesn't get recognized by your computer. I got it to work by installing the SE update service on my computer and followed the steps to update the software on the phone. This step will install a SE Flash Driver on your computer. I restarted my computer and somehow it worked.
I then followed the adb install method and got non-market apps installed without rooting it. If you want to root, you can use the adb method to install the one click root and then you are done. However, rooting you AT&T device does not automatically allow you to install non-market apps. It will still be blocked!!! You have to adjust systems.db settings in order it to change it. That's the step I'm at right now. Going to do it after work tonight.
Is there any site or source on the web that provides downloads of old versions of Android Market apps? This would be for apps that are now updated or no longer available on the Market? I am looking for a site similar to "OldVersion.com" which has some old/classic PC software (but this would be something for android apps instead)?
Thanks if anyone knows of a source or sites.
CustomShortcut gone?
The app that I am looking for in the above post was a free one called CustomShortcut APK. I now have it on one of my two phones (the other phone had it but was lost and replaced). I have tried looking for a developer page for this app but no luck as everything seems to point back to android market as the source link for download.
Does anyone know of a way or source for me to get this APK back on my other phone? Is there a way to copy it from one phone to the other? I am assuming that it was removed from the market because it may not be compatible with ICS but I am not running ICS. The application was made by appli.club.
Are you rooted? If so use root explorer to look for the .apk in the /system/app folder and copy or email it to the other phone and install it.

No sadly I am not rooted. Is that how this could be done? I have an HTC phone (Sensation) and I like my "sense" gui. Don't want to wipe it out by rooting (that is what would happen, right?) If access to the apk is possible with rooting, then I guess my question would be, does anyone else here have CustomCut on their rooted phone? (Or possibly know of any website that would have those apk's available for download). I would be willing to pay if someone would take the time to send me a replacement copy.
just google for any app you want like this:
"title" "versionnumber" "apk" "download"
for example:
android market 2.9 apk download

Rooting will not wipe out your phone or change it other than giving you super user privileges. That way you will have access to get to the system apps folder.
I notice apktop keeps old versions around. But part of the reason I like Titanium backup is because I have a fail safe if a new update to an app is bad, as I can just restore from the last backup the older version.

Well I am not really too concerned about it wiping out my phone, but I thought I had read many posts here talking about once you root your phone the native skin from the manufacturer is eliminated (for HTC that would be the "Sense" user interface). Can you please confirm? Is this not true? HTC Sense will remain exactly the same after rooting my phone?
The other thing that has made me cautious is that my phone runs perfectly now and I see so many threads on the xda boards here and over at various android forums that start off with "My ____ app is not working right since I rooted...." Just a little daunting for a newbie like myself.

Thanks very much for the site suggestion. I have been trying to search for the CustomShortcut APK over there but no luck ...so far (the site search is not that easy to use). I have even tried to seach the site externally using google but, unfortunately, still no luck.
Wait for someone else to confirm on the htc, but nothing changed on my droidx. I just had superuser privs. All of the "this app quit working" is when people flash custom roms. You don't do that when you just root. But you have to be rooted in order to do things like that. Lol.
Rooting gives you the power to do that if you want to.
When I rooted my droidx, I did it just so I could have the power to do other things if I wanted. I am still on factory rom. But I am able to get to parts of the phone that are off limits if I wasnt rooted. I made it where I could tether, later I got rid of bloatware, etc.

Thanks once again for the reply. Now that you mention it, I remember reading the terminology "flashed" rom and thought they were similar or the same thing as rooting. One other question, once a phone is in a rooted state, if I was to go in and copy the APK for my replacement phone and put it on there could I then "unroot" lol ...sorry if this is not a word... so that my phone was no longer open? I had read somewhere (perhaps I heard it on a TWIT or Android podcast) that when your phone is in root state that anyone (ie: potentially bad software) has easier access to your phone's vunerable areas.

yes you can unroot. As for easy access after you are rooted to vulnerable areas, they can only get access if you let them. If an app wants super user privileges, you will get a pop up from su(the super user apk) telling you that some app is wanting privileges. You can grant or deny access. The only things on my phone that have ever given me a pop up are things that i downloaded and know need su access. Wifi tether, root explorer, adfree, etc.
I have found a site that keeps older version of an android app. It's called Android Drawer.
Hope it helps

I simply need to know, that's all. I'm frustrated because obtaining root seems so close and yet completely out of reach.

He was not asked to remove it. XDA allows the mention of this root method as long as the warning about information being sent to an IP address in china is mentioned as well.

We don't routinely remove Apps that collect identifying numbers or other personal and device identifiers.

you can try kingo root but I have to warn you that you verify that the website you download from is legit and not a a phishing website Lord of the root apk is not infact root apk but malware.
if you are on anything which is Android 6 plus chances that this APK will not root your phone because of security enhancements in that case your only choice is to to find a TWRP recovery for your phone Google TWRP and your phone name number follow instructions to flash it most of the time putting your phone in fastboot and flashing the image does the job and after that you can install magisk which will root your phone .With the option magisk hide enable you can fool other apps that your phone is not rooted or you can disable the superuser or root completely within magisk manager and use as non rooted phone.

Also, I'd like to know: is it true that rooting wipes all data from your phone? I'm trying to retrieve deleted pictures, so I need the data.

When you plug the phone / tablet to a computer you need to pull down from the top and look for Android System and something to do with USB / click this and choose Media Device or file transfer the PC should reconnect and make a sound. Now you should see all the folders in Internal storage and External storage (if you have a sdcard in the device)
make a folder on your pc and copy everything from the device to your pc
I personally use Google photos to keep those backed up and available on all my devices
Amazon Photos works just as well or you can even use both

Yeah I'll be using Google Photos from now on, it's just a bummer since I lost some pics I really cared about
Anyway, I've tried to copy, but I get an Unspecified Error
I don't understand
Edit: Ok, apparently the only folders I cannot copy are the Whatsapp and Android folders. I think I can just ignore them, since all the cached pics I want to recover are stored in the CloudDrive folder.
So, back to the root.
Is Kingo REALLY that malicious? I don't wanna risk any permanent damage on my phone (Android version 5.1)
And about TWRP: I got the app installed, but my device (CUN-L01) is not listed
kingo is not open source and when it and roots your phone it install some other bloatware app as well .As long as it's capable of rooting your phone go ahead and use it but make sure you to get rid of it after the diskdigger work is over
so yes something you may want to try
backup all your data photos call logs SMS etc , install kingo root app and get root { , if you want to keep permanent root then and at this stage you can download and install TWRP directly as a rooted user without going through the long drawn procedure of fast booting & once you have TWRP installed then replace your kingo app with your favourite root app and throw out kingo }
, do your diskdigger work and then un install kingo root app
there is a desktop and Android version both . the desktop version is supposed to be more powerful make sure you uninstall all the apps once your job is over also make sure that you are downloading the correct kingoapp because there are some of other 'viral' versions , that may install undesirable bloatware but will not roat
diskdigger alternative is phone paw you may want to try that as well I don't think that needs root it's PC based photo recovery software

If you put it that way, Kingo looks less meancing.
I'm not interested in a constantly rooted phone, just need it temporarily, so...
Sorry if I ask, but any of you have a reliable download link for Kingo? I really have no idea where should I look for a "safe" version.
Also, what do you mean by "make sure you uninstall all the apps once your job is over" ? Uninstalling Kingo is not enough?
there is a king root and there is the kingo root and I have not used both this crapwares for quite a long time I used them when I was on 4.x and rather new to this Android cynogen factory. At that time TWRP was a bit new and not every phone had a TWRP.
so I think I probably referred to kingroot and not kingo root
https://kingrootapp.net/
don't recollect but either or both of these apps also install some other bloatware apps that pretended to save your battery and show you how faster phone is charging ...whatever
uninstall all the apps that were installed after your 'root work' is over

First step unlock the bootload, on Huawei It's a pay service, check eBay or
https://www.dc-unlocker.com/how-to-read-huawei-bootloader-unlock-code
Second step you need a patched boot.img made with magisk. Most times you can get the stock boot.img from an OTA update.zip
Copy it to the phone and use magisk manager to install (patch) the stock file.
Now you copy the patched file to your PC fastboot folder.
Third and last step is to fastboot flash the patched boot img
The command is
fastboot flash boot patched_boot.img
Reboot and you have a rooted device

Here is how to do it
First things first, never use one click root apps! they install spyware and stuff, and they achieve root access in your phone by using vulnerabilities. The proper way to root it is the one by which you unlock the bootloader and flash a custom recovery like twrp, I found a post here https://techelucid.com/root-huawei-y5-ii/ ,follow it and try to use magisk instead of supersu, its more updated and can hide your root access, you can use supersu it work too but some apps won't work with root access enabled, magisk can hide this. Both can give you root access

well it sounded like this person just wanted a one shot one time root and out method which is why I suggested King root if it works. afterwards all that crapwhere can be deleted.
the other option was also mentioned that is TWRP and magisk .bootloader unlocking need not always be paid service lot of things allowed here on how to unlock bootloader but first we have to make sure if his bootloader is locked or unlocked.
turn on developer settings and oem unlock switch if that is present that mean the bootloader is unlocked and in fact this step of buying a service to unlock bootloader is redundant
I was trying to keep the thread as simple as possible without going into the depth of all the under the hood methods but sound like after all ,all the mechanics have opened up the hood and now we are getting to the engine
whatever works .....it sounds like he's getting good help so wish him good luck

Hello, did you find a way to recover this files with DiskDigger, im exactly on your same problem...
Please if you can help i will really appreciate.
I accidentally deleted some photos. After researching about how to recover, came across a windows 10 app called PhoneRescue for Android. When I attempt recovery through that app, it say's my device is not rooted, do I want to root device.
It also says that the rooting is irreversible. Although, I've seen on many sites (including this site) that unrooting can be done. e.g: https://www.xda-developers.com/how-to-unroot-your-phone/
So, has anyone rooted their device through PhoneRescue for Android then gone on to unroot? Or perhaps, rooted using Magicsk, used PhoneRescue for Android, then unrooted using any methods mentioned on link above or other method.
Thanks.

I tried diskdigger. It only finds cached thumbnails and existing photos. For genuine recovery (deep scan of disk) all programs and apps I've come across need root access.
If you can't find an app that doesn't required root, you you're out of luck.
Rooting requires and unlocked bootloader which will wipe your entire phone.
And no, rooting is not irreversible.
(Also, the article you linked is very old and does not apply)
What app did you delete them with?
Go to OnePlus gallery, and look through the app, maybe it has a trashbin somewhere.

The software company that built the phoneresuce application (which attempts data recovery) is offering to root your device. What would be the point if their rooting process wiped the whole disk?. This would render any data recovery pretty much pointless.
And no, rooting is not irreversible.
(Also, the article you linked is very old and does not apply)

Not really clear. The statement in brackets contradict the statement above.
But if we go by the one in brackets you mean to say if one roots, it cannot be undone (because the article is saying it can be done and you are saying it's very old so it dosen't apply anymore)
Go to OnePlus gallery, and look through the app, maybe it has a trashbin somewhere.

It was the Pictures folder which was deleted by mistake. Gallery cannot handle folders as far as I know. I use 'Amaze' the file/folder manager. Funnily enough, the deleted files were showing on Amaze until the other day. If I clicked on the 'Images' link on the right. (which finds all images on your device). The deleted files would show up as thumbnails (at least I can work out what they were), but they all were showing as '0 bytes'. If I clicked on one, it would just show a blank page.
When I enabled google photos sync, deleted files appeared on Google photos too (showing 0 bytes). If I clicked on one a message would appear 'device only'.
For anyone who takes screenshots often, or photos. Just enable something like google photos or take a local backup often and you wouldn't need to rely on recovery apps.

An unlocked bootloader is a must, yes, and that wipes your data.
And I just meant that the article you linked is old and the tool it refers to is obselete, but yes, rooting can 100% be undone.

Thanks.

imobie, vendor of 'PhoneRescue for Android' has confirmed their rooting process does not wipe data, but I think their rooting process only works with some phones.
If their rooting doesn't work they recommend we use Kingoroot or iRoot. I read that Kingoroot wipes the drive. Don't know about iRoot.

The question is, "Did you read all the answers"?
You are asking and users are answering but it seems you refuse to accept the answers.
Rooting your device WILL WIPE ALL YOUR DATA since it requires unlocked bootloader.
If you are trusting some company that is saying they will root your device without loose your data is up to you! But please don't make users loose their time.
All the answers here are based on user knowledge and user experience, you accept them or find your way

You misunderstood and are conflating.
I only meant that he/she has missed the part where I say 'When I enabled google photos sync...'. Read in context, this implies that I enabled Google photos after the folder deletion.
Btw, i'm not blindly trusting 'some company'. I've done my research, and also done a backup using multiple methods.
Still, I refuse to trust companies like Kingo root. Their website has confusing and conflicting info, no physical address, and they haven't replied to my query submitted through the web form.
I've also read on these very forums (that could actually be about King root - two very similar names) that they may be leaking your personal info.
I discovered that there is a rooting app developed by a user on these very forums. Still, I won't be installing without understanding exactly what the procedure does. It'll be good if I can see the code and compile the program myself.
